Bringing Loved Ones Home With Project Lifesaver

BY COURTNEY MENGEL

Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into finding him, but he was not located until a day or two later. He had passed away 250 feet behind his home.

“If he would have had a working wristband from Project Lifesaver, we more than likely would have found him,” stated Pilot Club of Lancaster member Cathy Cieslinski. “Project Lifesaver is all about bringing your loved ones home, and we saw a need in our county. Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.”

Project Lifesaver is a search-andrescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brainrelated challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes.

Pilot Club has partnered with 18 municipalities to bring Project Lifesaver to Lancaster County. Lt. Jennifer Brubaker from East Hempfield Township Police Department was one of the first police officers to receive training. “The equipment took time to work with and feel comfortable using,” said Brubaker. “In a moment where lives are at stake, you don’t want to use equipment that you need to think much about operating. You want to get right to work and get moving with it.” Brubaker said she decided to receive training because she has two autistic goddaughters, so she saw value in the program.

Project Lifesaver participants wear a personalized transmitter 24/7 on their wrist or ankle that emits a tracking signal on FM radio frequency. When a caregiver calls 911 and reports that a participant has wandered, a search team triangulates the area and uses a receiver to locate the individual through his or her transmitter.

“People should enroll in the program because, although this won’t keep loved ones from wandering, it will serve as a safety net,” explained Cieslinski. “If they wander, this will give us a fighting chance to find them as opposed to finding that needle in a haystack.”

Police officers keep profiles on every individual enrolled. “We have these on hand so officers are aware of what the person looks like, what they will possibly wander to, what their disabilities include, and so on,” noted Brubaker. “Sometimes, we will meet individuals enrolled in the program, specifically children, to establish a friendship with them so that in the event of an emergency, they won’t be afraid of us. We want people to see us and know that we mean safety.”

Individuals with an official diagnosis can enroll in Project Lifesaver. To request an application for Project Lifesaver, contact Cieslinski at 717572-2682.

The Pilot Club welcomes new members. For more information, visit http://bit.ly/PilotClub or search for “Pilot Club of Lancaster” on Facebook.

Ribbon-Cutting Event Set For Art Installation

The ribbon-cutting event for “Art Heals,” a large-scale public art installation, will take place on First Friday, June 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. “Art Heals” is located outside Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, 204 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and in the College Art Garden, located at the corner of Prince and Chestnut streets in downtown Lancaster. The installation features works by Jennifer Quigley, artist and registered expressive arts therapist. Quigley is the inaugural artist in residence of the college’s Healing Arts Residency, an ongoing partnership between medical facilities, key community leaders, and the art and design education community. Its goal is to develop initiatives that inspire creative practices and promote community healing, wellness, coping, and personal growth.

Ceremonies will be followed by live music by Heather Vidal.

The Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation has announced that the eighth annual Covenanter Scottish Festival and Highland Games will be held on Saturday, Sept. 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will be located on the grounds of Middle Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1199 Valley Road, Quarryville, and the historic Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church, 1188 Valley Road, Quarryville.

The festival is a celebration of the Scottish origin of the Covenanters who settled in southern Lancaster and Chester counties. The event’s piping competition, which is sanctioned through the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a veterans memorial ceremony featuring the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums, which will honor World War II veterans whose graves are on the grounds of Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Church. A wreath will be placed at each of the graves. After the ceremony and greetings from a Pennsylvania state representative, the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums will lead a procession from the Highland Games field to the main performing area.

From 10:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., there will be music performances, demonstrations, and workshops. Entertainment will include the Washington Memorial Pipes and Drums, Charlie Zahm, Tad Marks, Sean Heely & Celtic Trio, and more. Sheep herding, a haggis ceremony, spinning and weaving, fiddling and early Scottish weaponry are a few of the heritage demonstrations that will be available. Scottish clans and organizations will be represented at the festival, and vendors will sell Scottish goods and food. American food will be available for purchase as well.

The festival will be held rain or shine. An admission cost has been set for adults and teenagers. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free of charge. Free parking will be available on-site.

The proceeds will benefit the ongoing effort to maintain and restore the historic Covenanter church and its attached one-room school museum. Both sides of the structure will be open during the festival.

For more information about the festival or to obtain discounted admission tickets, readers may visit www.covenanterscottishfestival.com or search for “8th Annual Covenanter Scottish Festival” on Facebook.

Octorara Covenanter Presbyterian Foundation members Jonathon Welch (left) and Sandra Shenk encourage the public to attend the Scottish Festival and Highland Games, which will include a ceremony honoring World War II veterans.

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group has awarded its Green Project grants to 11 more Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500, a total of 63 Lancaster County organizations have received green grants from the group over the past six years.

Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include BethDenny, operating as Indian Market Hives, for planting of various species of wild flowers and other flora to determine their effect on attracting native pollinators; Landis Woods Nature Preschool, buying a vermicomposter and composting worms to start a vermicomposting program that will supply the preschool’s established organic garden with nutrient-rich fertilizer; and The Edible Classroom, underwriting fees for several first- to fifth-grade students to attend a summer camp at Penn Manor’s Conestoga Elementary School.

Also, Lafayette Elementary School, School District of Lancaster, is creating a rain garden in its enclosed greenspace/outdoor classroom that would absorb moisture in a swampy area and make it more user-friendly. Burrowes Elementary School, School District of Lancaster, is improving its current outdoor space by installing a rain barrel to conserve water. Immerse International, Millersville, is purchasing rain barrels, seeping hoses, and other parts for use in supplying more water to its Prayer Garden.

Homefields Incorporated is buying a corrugated steel pipe to shunt rain water that drains through the property (currently causing erosion problems) under a farm lane, and The Green Team, a student organization at Lancaster Mennonite High School, is planting native-toPennsylvania flora in areas of the school’s campus that have been deforested either naturally or intentionally by construction. Arbor Place Inc., Lancaster, is purchasing raised table beds, kits, soil, and compost for the creation of an outside S.T.E.M. classroom.

Also, The Coalition for Smart Growth, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, is supporting the Coalition and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership that will host its Places2040 Summit in April 2022. Historic Poole Forge is completing its rain garden area that was established four years ago.

Proposals for receiving a grant were evaluated on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group might be involved. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike.

The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Thursday, March 31, 2022. Recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2022. For complete details about the Green Project grant program, visit http://lancaster sierraclub.org/grant-program/ or contact 717-475-0586 or jimsmeenan@gmail.com.
