Parkesburg Unveils Plans For Sesquicentennial Celebration BY FRANCINE FULTON

A hometown parade, musical entertainment, children’s activities, fireworks, Victorian dancing and a display of fine art and crafts are just some of the activities that will be featured during the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial Celebration set for Friday to Sunday, May 20 to 22. Plans for

the 150th anniversary celebration were unveiled during a “Big Reveal Party” held on Feb. 9 via Zoom. The Zoom presentation was narrated by Kathleen Hood, a member of the Parkesburg Sesquicentennial planning committee. Other committee members were also on hand to explain various aspects of the celebration. See Sesquicentennial pg 5

At first, Drizzle had to be hand-fed formula by Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR) volunteers (left photo) before growing enough to eat on his own. He came to LDAR at 2.5 ounces and now weighs over 12 ounces (right photo).

Drizzle: The Little Kitten That Could n mid-January, a homeowner in the Philadelphia area was taking out his garbage and saw movement in a nearby trash bag. At first, he thought it was mice. But after a closer inspection, he found two tiny kittens, only one of which was still living. He contacted the Spayed Club, based in Sharon Hill, which in

turn reached out for help from Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue (LDAR), a Chester County-based nonprofit organization that rescues homeless, abused and unwanted dogs and cats and finds them permanent homes. “The kitten had come to them at 6 p.m. on a weeknight and Donna, the manager of the Spayed Club, called to ask me if I could take (him),” recalled Lisa Newton, LDAR

board member and cat/kitten rescue volunteer. “She knew I had a nursing mama (cat) who also came from the Spayed Club.” The rescued cat was Stormie, and her kittens were named Blizzard, Rain, Sky, Misty and Sunny. The new baby that was found in the trash was named Drizzle. Luckily, Stormie was able to nurse Drizzle, even though she was not his biological mother. “They found Stormie on the street, and she is so friendly,” Newton said. “They don’t always (take to the) babies you give them if they are not their own.” In addition, Newton had to provide supplemental feedings for Drizzle with kitten formula. “(Feeding) usually takes place every two hours, but since there was a nursing mama it was every four hours,” she said, noting the feeding schedule continued around the clock. Today, Drizzle is thriving. “Jan. 12 is when (he came to LDAR). He was hours old,” said Newton. “He was 2.5 ounces and now is up to 12.9 ounces.” And, happily, the little cat already has an approved adopter.

Gary Pawliczek, who is the membership chair for Rotary District 7450, which serves Chester, Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, provided more information about the new club, which is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kennett Square Light. Community Courier: How did the new Rotary Club idea get started? Is it a branch of a different Rotary? Pawliczek: I am a member of the Kennett Square Light (Rotary) Club. Our goal is to support existing clubs and to start new clubs. We are a new club that has grown from 0 to 28 members in four years. I am very familiar with the Parkesburg, Atglen and Cochranville area. It is a bustling and growing area and home to many businesses and a large residential component. Community Courier: Who may join the Western Chester County Rotary Club? Are there any limitations regarding members’ professions? P a w l i c z e k : The Rotary Club will not have limits or restrictions based on any occupation or job. We welcome diverse representation by profession. If we have

Members of the newly formed Western Chester County Rotary Club met for the first time on Feb. 9.

interest from multiple persons in any one career, it is acceptable for them all to join. Community Courier: Are all community members welcome, or must they be recommended or sponsored? Pawliczek: Potential members do not need to be sponsored or recommended, although that is often the case. They may in fact just show up or volunteer. (We) are 100% open to first-time guests or visitors. RSVP is not necessary. An interested member of the public may also attend as a guest without making a commitment to join.

C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Are you looking for young people, retired individuals or people of all ages to become members? Pawliczek: All ages of people (are welcome). Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self,” so Rotary members are people who want to make their local world a better place. Often, members are business owners. However, we also have members from the arts, medical and educational community. We have professors, students and members from the nonprofit community. C o m m u n i t y C o u r i e r : Will this be more of a social club or

a community service club? Pawliczek: Giving back or community service is our main goal. Members also have tremendous fellowship and camaraderie in being part of something that they know is actively making their community a better place. Those interested in joining the Western Chester County Rotary Club are invited to attend a meeting. Upcoming meeting dates include Wednesdays, Feb. 23, March 9 and March 23. For more information, contact Pawliczek at rotary74 50membership@gmail.com.

Peacemaker Center Sets Open House At New Location BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Peacemaker Center, a nonprofit organization that offers faith-based counseling services, will hold a grand opening celebration at its new location, 368 W. Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Downingtown, on Saturday, March 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The Peacemaker Center relocated from 103 Garris Road, Downingtown, to the much larger facility, which was the former home of the Brandywine Consignment Shop. The center opened its doors to clients at the new location on Feb. 7. “Because of our growth, we were looking for space. We’ve been out of room for a couple of years,” said Judy Reid, executive director. “(By acquiring the building), we tripled our space.” The building had to undergo a major renovation in order to transform a retail

space into a counseling center. “We went from six therapy rooms to 16 rooms,” Reid said. Each therapy room includes comfortable sofas and chairs and a variety of paintings and other artwork. Also added was a large family room for children’s therapy services. “We wanted to avoid that clinical (feel),” said Reid. “You don’t want it to feel sterile. We wanted it to be hospitable.”

The Peacemaker Center, founded in 2000, has grown from one therapist working from a home office to a staff of more than 25 clinicians working from seven office locations in Downingtown, Kennett Square, West Chester, Audubon, Fort Washington, King of Prussia and Douglassville. Telehealth visits are also available. In addition to Reid and See Peacemaker Center pg 7

The Chester County Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently held its annual American History Essay Contest awards program, which was presented virtually via Zoom. According to Elberta Clinton, essay contest chair, each year, nationwide, students in fifth through eighth grades are given the opportunity to compose an essay and have it presented through their schools for evaluation. She related this year’s topic: “Nov. 11, 2021, marks the 100th anniversary of the dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Imagine that you had a brother who lost his life on the battlefields of France during World War I. You and your family attended the Nov. 11, 1921, dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington, D.C.

Describe what this meant to you and your family.” Judging criteria included historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of material, interest, originality and grammar. The chapter winners were Graham Drummond, a sixthgrade student at Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center, Downingtown, and Claire Bushnell, an eighth-grade student at Peirce Middle School, West Chester. In his essay, Graham used a diary format. In an entry dated Nov. 14, 1921, Graham wrote, “Warren G. Harding gave a speech introducing the unknown soldier to us. He described the person as being someone and everyone. He represents the rich and the poor, a new citizen or one with deep roots in America.” In her essay, Claire wrote about Ruth, who lost a brother in the war. “Ruth felt a bit of comfort in the knowledge that it was not just her family

that had suffered,” the essay stated. “As (Harding) said, hundreds, maybe thousands of families like hers were grieving a great loss, and that made her feel a bit less alone.” New this year was a contest for high-schoolers titled, Patriots of the American Revolution. This year’s topic was: “Select a figure from the era of the American Revolution. Discuss how he or she influenced the course of the American Revolution, who he or she was and his/her contribution to the founding of a new nation.” “The evaluation criteria are the same as the American History Essay Contest,” Clinton noted. The chapter winner was Melissa Griswold, a 10thgrader at Unionville High School. In her essay, Melissa wrote about Nanyehi, later known as Nancy Ward, a Cherokee who advocated for

peaceful relationships between the Cherokees and Americans. Clinton introduced the students, as well as their family members, teachers and school administrators who were also in attendance via Zoom. She also read a biographical piece about each student. For his or her achievements, each of the chapter winners received a certificate, a medal and a monetary award. DAR is a nonprofit, nonpolitical, volunteer women’s service organization. Any woman age 18 or older is eligible to join DAR if she can prove a lineal descent from a patriot who rendered military, civil or patriotic service during the Revolutionary War. For more information about membership, visit www.dar.org. More information about the Chester County chapter is available at www.ccdar.org.

application at www.lucky dawganimalrescue.com. “Stormie is incredible. She is such a sweet cat, under a year old and was someone’s house cat,” Newton said. Newton’s sister, Mary Bauer, founded LDAR in January of 2018. Newton and Bauer, as well as all of the LDAR volunteers, have dedicated their lives to the rescue of animals in need. Having a success story like Drizzle’s makes all the effort worthwhile. “Having lost so many little

ones that age, I never count on them making it,” Newton shared. “I do whatever I can, but I don’t get my hopes up. (Drizzle) was a fighter from the beginning.” LDAR, a foster-based rescue, is currently seeking financial donations, as well as pet foster families. For more information about the rescue, including how to foster, volunteer or adopt, email LuckyDawgAR@gmail .com, visit www.luckydawg animalrescue.com or search for “Lucky Dawg Animal Rescue” on Facebook.

Drizzle from pg 1 Newton reported that while Stormie still nurses Drizzle occasionally, he has begun to eat more on his own. “None of our kittens leave (for adoption) until they are 8 weeks old and weigh two pounds because we vaccinate them before they leave,” Newton pointed out. “I just got him to start eating some gruel - it’s formula and kitten food together.” To date, Stormie has not been adopted. The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy (KSCA) will accept applications for its first-ever cadet class in July. The Keystone State ChalleNGe Academy is designed to give academically challenged teens a chance to learn leadership skills, selfdiscipline, and responsibility while working toward finishing their education and building a brighter future. The opening of the academy at Fort Indiantown Gap in Lebanon County formally establishes the National Guard Bureau’s Youth ChalleNGe Program in Pennsylvania. The program is open to male and female Pennsylvania residents ages 16 to 18 who are failing to progress in high school or may not be on a clear path to graduating. Applicants must be willing to be drug free, free of felony convictions, and voluntarily commit to the program. The program lasts for 17 months, with the first five months consisting of residential training at Fort Indiantown Gap followed by one year of mentorship back in the community. For detailed eligibility requirements and to begin the application process, visit www.dmva.pa.gov and look under Keystone Challenge

Academy at the top of the page. To have an application mailed or to talk with someone about this program, contact the academy at ra-mvpa challenge@pa.gov, 717-8617767, or 717-861-8831. The KSCA is a joint effort between the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) and the National Guard Bureau in consultation with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Cadets will be introduced to the military structure and focus on eight core components: academic excellence, physical fitness, leadership and followership, responsible citizenship, job skills, service to the community, health and hygiene, and life coping skills. Graduates may receive high school credits, credentials, or a GED. There is no tuition cost to attend. Meals, housing, uniforms, and school supplies are provided at no charge. The National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program currently operates 40 Youth Challenge sites in 31 states and territories. The program is both federally and state funded. More details can be found at www.ngchallenge.org or www.ngyf.org.

The American Red Cross invites community members to become volunteers. Local volunteers enable the Red Cross to support its community and neighbors in need every day. In the last year, Greater Pennsylvania Red Cross volunteers provided aid, including food and shelter, to over 6,300 people affected by home fires and other disasters

in Pennsylvania. Among the available volunteer positions are a transportation specialist and Disaster Action Team members. Transportation specialists are the link between blood donors and blood recipients. They deliver blood, platelets, and other blood products to processing centers and to hospitals for patient use.

Each day, people are forced from their homes due to fires, storms, and other disasters. Disaster Action Teams meet the disastercaused needs of individuals and households, such as lodging and clothing, and connect people with longterm recovery services. Training is free. To learn more, visit www.redcross

.org/volunteertoday. COVID-19 vaccination is required for in-person volunteer roles. When considering volunteer opportunities, individuals should review the CDC guidance for people who are at higher risk for severe illness, consult their health care provider, and follow local guidance.

general office manager Patsy Green, who has been working at the center for 22 years, staff members include Scott Edwards, director of operations, who has been working at the center for 16 years, and counselors Karen Uhler, 20 years, and Dan Rodgers, 15 years. Reid pointed out that the pandemic has changed the need for therapy across the country. “In this past year, (the Peacemaker Center) grew 50%,” she said. “Because of COVID, (more people suffer from) anxiety and depression. Kids are struggling with school. Marriages are struggling. Everyone being home made problems more obvious.” The Peacemaker Center serves individuals, couples, families and groups addressing a variety of issues, including abuse, addictions, anger, depression, domestic violence, eating disorders, grief and suicide. “Our mission is to help people find peace with God, themselves and others. We do this regardless of the ability to pay for services,” said Reid, noting that clients pay on a sliding scale. “(2021) was a monumental year for us. We gave away - through reduced fees and scholarships - almost $1 million in services to the community.” For more information about the Peacemaker Center or to schedule an appointment, call 610-2692661 or visit www.thepeace makercenter.org or www .facebook.com/thepeace makercenter.

Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM), a nonprofit organization providing free medical service to people in need, now has a designated area and equipment for its physical therapy program. These additions were made using $50,000 in state funding secured by state Sen. Carolyn Comitta. CVIM is using the funds to develop an on-site physical therapy room with therapeutic devices and physical therapy equipment - including tools that clients can borrow to continue their rehabilitation at home - to support its growing physical therapy program. CVIM currently serves approximately 25 patients per week in its physical therapy program, which is supported by a staff of dedicated volunteers, including two physical therapists, two physiatrists, an athletic trainer, and a hand therapist, as well as additional

volunteer professionals offering chiropractic care and acupuncture therapy. CVIM’s physiatrists and physical therapy team aim to empower patients through education, rehabilitation, and prevention, as well as nonopioid medications, injections, modalities, and therapeutic exercises. The organization also now has a dedicated space for its own electromyography (EMG) machine, a diagnostic tool that is used to assess nerve and muscle function and that can be particularly helpful for patients dealing with hand or wrist injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome. A majority of patients served at CVIM work physically demanding jobs in manual labor and the service industry. That means many CVIM clients are susceptible to injuries and may live in chronic pain, but they may struggle to access or afford physical therapy due to prohibitive out-of-pocket costs. Comitta, who serves on the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, thanked CVIM president and CEO Maureen Tomoschuk and all of CVIM’s staff members and volunteers for their ongoing work to provide medical and dental care and health education to Chester County residents and families who lack access to health care. Comitta also thanked CVIM for administering thousands of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and continuing to assist residents and families in need throughout the pandemic. Founded in 1998, CVIM is a community-based volunteer clinic. In 2021, CVIM treated 5,000 patients during more than 41,000 visits.

Recipe For Molten Chocolate Cakes This recipe for Molten Chocolate Cakes is a mix of spongy cake and warm, flowing custard. The cakes can be dressed up even further with berries and whipped cream or chocolate shavings. The recipe is courtesy of Baker’s Baking Chocolate. Molten Chocolate Cakes (Serves 6) Ingredients 1 package (6 squares) Baker’s Bittersweet Baking Chocolate 10 tablespoons butter 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1/2 cup flour 3 whole eggs 3 egg yolks Instructions 1 - Grease six custard cups or soufflé dishes. Place on baking sheet. 2 - Microwave chocolate and butter in a large microwavable bowl on high for 2 minutes or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Add powdered sugar and flour; mix well. Add whole eggs and egg yolks; stir with wire whisk until well blended. Divide batter evenly among prepared custard cups. 3 - Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 14 to 15 minutes or until cakes are firm around edges but soft in the centers. Let stand 1 minute. Run small knife around cakes to loosen. Carefully invert cakes onto dessert dishes. Garnish as desired. Serve immediately. Tip: The batter can be made a day ahead and poured into prepared custard cups. They should then be covered with plastic wrap and refrigerated. W hen it is almost time to serve the cakes, they should be uncovered and baked as directed.
