Gary Pawliczek, who is the membership chair for Rotary District 7450, which serves Chester, Delaware, Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, provided more information about the new club, which is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Kennett Square Light.

Community Courier: How did the new Rotary Club idea get started? Is it a branch of a different Rotary?

Pawliczek: I am a member of the Kennett Square Light (Rotary) Club. Our goal is to support existing clubs and to start new clubs. We are a new club that has grown from 0 to 28 members in four years. I am very familiar with the Parkesburg, Atglen and Cochranville area. It is a bustling and growing area and home to many businesses and a large residential component.

Community Courier: Who may join the Western Chester County Rotary Club? Are there any limitations regarding members’ professions?

Pawliczek: The Rotary Club will not have limits or restrictions based on any occupation or job. We welcome diverse representation by profession. If we have interest from multiple persons in any one career, it is acceptable for them all to join.

Community Courier: Are all community members welcome, or must they be recommended or sponsored?

Paw wliczek: Potential members do not need to be sponsored or recommended, although that is often the case. They may in fact just show up or volunteer. (We) are 100% open to first-time guests or visitors. RSVP is not necessary. An interested member of the public may also attend as a guest without making a commitment to join.

Community Courier: Are you looking for young people, retired individuals or people of all ages to become members?

Pawliczek: All ages of people (are welcome). Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self,” so Rotary members are people who want to make their local world a better place. Often, members are business owners. However, we also have members from the arts, medical and educational community. We have professors, students and members from the nonprofit community.

Community Courier: Will this be more of a social club or a community service club?

Pawliczek: Giving back or community service is our main goal. Members also have tremendous fellowship and camaraderie in being part of something that they know is actively making their community a better place.

Those interested in joining the Western Chester County Rotary Club are invited to attend a meeting. Upcoming meeting dates include Wednesdays, Feb. 23, March 9 and March 23. For more information, contact Pawliczek at rotary74 50membership@gmail.com.

Members of the newly formed Western Chester County Rotary Club met for the first time on Feb. 9.

Scholarship Applicants Sought

The Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC) invites area residents to apply for its Merit Shop Construction Scholarships. The purpose of the scholarship program - sponsored by ABC Keystone and administered by the MSTRC - is to assist individuals who are seeking to further their education in careers in construction. On average, 10 to 12 scholarships are awarded each year.

To be eligible, an applicant must either be a permanent resident in the chapter’s service area - which includes Adams, Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, Schuylkill, and York counties - or be applying to or attending a chapter service-area trade school, college, or university program that is directly related to a construction career. Relevant fields of study include skilled trades, engineering, architecture, and construction management. Applications are reviewed by distinguished industry professionals, and scholarships are awarded solely based on merit.

Applications and all reference forms must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25. Finalists will be notified in May.

To download application forms, visit www.abckey stone.org/scholarships/. Questions may be directed to Stephanie Larkin, vice president of education, safety and workforce development, at 717-653-8106 or stephanie@abckeystone.org.

The MSTRC was established several years ago by Associated Builders & Contractors, Keystone Chapter (ABC Keystone) as a nonprofit fund whose mission is to provide financial assistance to students who have chosen construction-related career paths. The MSTRC, which is funded by members of the chapter, has awarded over $550,350 since its inception.

The American Helicopter Museum & Education Center (AHMEC), 1220 American Blvd., West Chester, will present an exhibit, “The Helicopter and the Presidency,” exploring the iconic role played by helicopters in the American presidency. The presentation will run from Saturday, March 5, through Sunday, May 29, with a members-only preview on Friday, March 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of Operation Alert, in which a Bell UH-13J helicopter evacuated President Dwight D. Eisenhower to Camp David in Maryland. The civil defense drill was the first time a president flew in a helicopter. Today, United States presidents routinely use this mode of transportation.

Exhibit artifacts include scale models of helicopters, glassware, patches, and more, as well as images courtesy of the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Smithsonian Institution, John F. Kennedy Library and Museum, Ronald Reagan Library and Gerald R. Ford Library, and others. Visitors can also view the museum’s Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey and Sikorsky S-61/HH-3A Sea King to get an idea of what the helicopters are like in real life.

For more information, contact AHMEC at 610-436-9600 or visit www .american helicopter.museum.

Peacemaker Center Sets Open House At New Location

BY FRANCINE FULTON

The Peacemaker Center, a nonprofit organization that offers faith-based counseling services, will hold a grand opening celebration at its new location, 368 W. Uwchlan Ave. (Route 113), Downingtown, on Saturday, March 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Peacemaker Center relocated from 103 Garris Road, Downingtown, to the much larger facility, which was the former home of the Brandywine Consignment Shop. The center opened its doors to clients at the new location on Feb. 7.

“Because of our growth, we were looking for space. We’ve been out of room for a couple of years,” said Judy Reid, executive director. “(By acquiring the building), we tripled our space.”

The building had to undergo a major renovation in order to transform a retail space into a counseling center. “We went from six therapy rooms to 16 rooms,” Reid said. Each therapy room includes comfortable sofas and chairs and a variety of paintings and other artwork. Also added was a large family room for children’s therapy services. “We wanted to avoid that clinical (feel),” said Reid. “You don’t want it to feel sterile. We wanted it to be hospitable.”

The Peacemaker Center, founded in 2000, has grown from one therapist working from a home office to a staff of more than 25 clinicians working from seven office locations in Downingtown, Kennett Square, West Chester, Audubon, Fort Washington, King of Prussia and Douglassville. Telehealth visits are also available.
