On July 27 at 6 p.m., the new Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR) station in Richmond Square held an open house. Highlights of the event included tours of the facility, an appearance by Sparky the Fire Dog, free ice cream, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring guest speakers. Chief Scott Little had a special reason to celebrate. Data since the station opened in January has shown improvement toward reaching goals set for the fire department. “We ran some data numbers for a few months, and we have cut response times to the northwest section by 40%,” reported Little. “We are happy with that.”

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” saidNotTerry.long after that conversation, Terry made the hour-and-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’”

The invitation is offered based on his personal testimony. “I got here by an act of God,” he explained. “I have no f ormaleducation for See Ian Solodky pg 3 the Fire Dog Township manager Rick Kane (with scissors) fire Scott Little Terry

Little noted that when area residents think about big-scale fire departments, they imagine metropolises like New York City. “We do the same kind of work in a different environment,” pointed out Little, who added that with nearly 45,000 residents, Manheim Township is the third-largest firstclass township in the commonwealth behind Upper Darby and Lower Merion. T hat kind of scope requires careful consideration with regard to fire protection, and the placement of the Richmond station with three firefighters on call at all times is tied to Manheim Township’s Insurance Services Office (ISO) number, which Little noted dictates what homeowners and commercial buildings pay for insurance premiums. “Right now, we are in the top 5% of the country,” said Little, who added that more than 48,000 companies are graded on fire rescue. “It’s something for us tobe proud of.”

Terry decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The chief is as pleased with the way the new station fits into the Richmond Square neighborhood as he is with the ratings the fire service has garnered. Station 202 is located at 600 Richmond Drive, Lancaster, in a former bank building owned by and leased from Oak Tree, which owns the adjacent commercial buildings. “The safer your community, the better the community is for people to live and work and raise families here,” said Little, who noted that a number of positives were considered in the placement of the station. “This station has a community feel,” he said, pointing out the number of area residents who walk their dogs by the station daily. MTFR personnel have responded to their canine neighbors by stocking dog treats and putting out bowls of water. “Being there for our community and having conversation is important,” said Little. Manheim Township commissioners John Bear and Barry Kauffman both attended the open house, and township manager Rick Kane cut the ribbon to open the new station. Kane was fire chief in 2021 when the Manheim Township Board of Commissioners approved the station. information about MTFR may be found at https://mtfr.net.

When a group of veterans who traveled to Vietnam returned, Terry asked them to share about their experience at the breakfast.

“We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase. Currently, Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.

Manheim Township Historical Society will present its 2022 Autumn Series, “Underground Railroad” by Leroy Hopkins, a retired Millersville University professor. The three-part series will discuss the history of the Underground Railroad in Lancaster County. The series will be held in the Morgan Center Room at Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. All programs will start at 1 p.m. “Underground Railroad - Enslaved Africans in Lancaster County” will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20. MERCHANDISER - Manheim Township Edition - August 17, 2022 - 3townlively.com (pastoring yet). I have the Bible, my experiences, and my convictions.” Solodky’s path to Mount Zion has been long and sometimes dark. “I was led into the valley of the shadow of death,” he said. “My God, whom I love, had to break me to get me to understand the proper way to fill in the cracks (in my soul) that I believe we all have.”

Growing up in Manheim Township, Solodky became interested in emergency services when his sister was in an auto accident. He became a firefighter with the Eden station and took part in the first paramedic training program held at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, graduating in 2001. He served with emergency medical services in Strasburg, married his high school sweetheart, and had three children. Solodky referred to his time as a paramedic as his “pre-Christian life.” “When I started relying on (God’s) understanding instead of my understanding, my life was completely transformed,” he explained. “I am still a sinner, but ... I am compelled to spread the Good News.” To reach out to those in need, Solodky became involved in a food ministry at Long Memorial United Methodist Church in Neffsville. “I felt my ministry was to be help those people who were (struggling) as I once was,” he said. In 2015, he began working for Line Pro Inc. He and the owner of the company began attending group meetings held by local pastors who recognized Solodky’s gift for ministry. “(The pastors) kept saying, ‘You would be a good pastor. Why don’t you start the (training) process?’” Solodky recalled. He kept refusing, but in May, he was told of a small church about 45 minutes from his home in Mount Joy. “They said, ‘We think you would be a great fit.’”

The Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will hold a Back-to-School Kickoff Campfire Cookout on Sunday, Aug. 21, beginning at 1 p.m. There will be an opportunity to roast hot dogs around fire pits and enjoy s’mores. There will also be games and a free school supply giveaway, and the Manheim Township Fire Rescue will be on-site. A blessing of the children as they prepare for a new school year will take place at 2:30 p.m. Events will be held in shaded areas at the west end of the property. Food and drinks will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. For more information, contact pastor Jamie Nace at Pastor JamieN@lancob.org. Lancaster COB Sets Back-To-School Event

Solodky said no again, but he agreed to pray on the subject, and he met with the district superintendent of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of the UMC. With approval from the conference and completed background checks, Solodky met with Mount Zion elders, who voted to accept him as pastor. Solodky plans to complete his schooling during an intensive UMC training program in early 2023. In addition to preaching, he has begun making house visits to church members. “I love what this church stands for,” he said, reading the Zion mission statement, which expresses the importance of knowing God and making Him known so church members can return God’s love as witnesses and followers. He has taken note of the wisdom of the congregants. “They have learned about who Jesus is and how He is working in their lives,” he said, adding that he has felt welcomed. “This church has thrown their arms around me and made me feel comfortable,” he shared. Mount Zion currently holds Sunday school at 9 a.m. and worship at 10:15 a.m. More information may be found at http://mzumchurch.net.

BY ANN MEAD ASH Lititz recROC coordinator Corey Pickel described the upcoming Boulder Bash indoor climbing competition as a combination of problem solving and an athletic event. “We get more than 40 problems up there (on the climbing wall) for the event,” explained Pickel. A problem is the configuration that helps a climber move from the floor to the top of climbing wall using specific hand and foot holds. “So, for example, on the wall here there’s a green one with two pieces of tape that shows where your hand placement should be for the beginning of the problem,” pointed out Pickel, who noted that climbers will need to work with a specific color to reach the top. “Each problem has a point system attached, but competitors don’t know what that is,” Pickel explained, adding that the number of attempts to complete the problem is tracked and points are added up to determine the winners. Event head setter Doc Beverly works with a team to create fresh problems. The competition, which will be held at the recROC, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Suite 10, Lititz, on Saturday, Sept. 10, will feature advanced, intermediate, and beginner contests. Registration on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. Pickel said that the competition usually begins at 9:30 a.m. and that each competitive group takes about an hour to complete its climbs. About 75 competitors took part in the 2021 event. “We have had a great turnout the last few years,” said Pickel, who noted that some climbers travel a distance to take part but that many competitors are local. Male and female winners are named in each category. Prizes for winners have included tension boards climbers can use to train at home and crash pads for outdoor climbing. “People tend to appreciate (equipment) more, and (those prizes) entice some of the stronger climbers to come participate,” said Pickel. According to Pickel, spectators are welcome for a nominal fee, which includes free coffee, longjohns, and door prizes, which are often gift cards donated by local businesses.Pickel, who was tapped to run the recROC in 2019, pointed out that this is the sixth year for the Boulder Bash competition, which had originally been held each April. When COVID19 restrictions delayed the 2020 event, the competition was moved to September. Pickel has been pleased with the growth of the competition and the overall use of the recROC center in recent years. “COVID was a major curveball, but with our committed members and staff we got through it,” he said. “I feel really blessed that we have been able to grow,” he said, noting the location generally has more than 100 visitors on a regular weekday. To prepare for the competition, teardown and cleaning of the wall and holds will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6. From that point, the wall will be shut down until the competition. Pickel explained that this is to make sure that all competitors have the same amount of time to work the Readersproblems.whoareinterested in taking part in the Boulder Bash may orhttp://www.lititzrecroc.com/eventsvisitcall717-626-5096.
