The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different.
The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers.

Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855567-5341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19.
The project anticipates distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to lowincome families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of
Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas.
The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of purchasing the groceries for the dinner. The project relies on individual donations for over two-thirds of the resources needed to fund the food distribution. For information about how to contribute, readers may visit www.lcpn.org.

extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler.
With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different.
More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews.
In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/ downloads.
Rather than host an inperson countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and

A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/ extragivecast.

The new grab-and-go options include signature Lancaster County fare like red beet eggs and Lebanon bologna as well as sandwiches, wraps, desserts, and yogurt parfaits. All menu options, including the three-course meal, are nominally priced.
Paul Risk Construction was the contractor for the project. The renovation was the first phase of a two-phase plan to renovate the public spaces at UZRC. Next year, the retirement community will create a larger chapel and mixed-use space off of the main lobby.

Throughout September, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank encouraged the community to contribute to its fourth annual Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive. To bolster collection efforts, Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor PSECU pledged to match the month’s total contributions up to $10,000.
The response, which came from more than 675 local individuals, businesses, and organizations, came in at over $52,426. This amount, coupled with PSECU’s $10,000 matching contribution, brings the fundraising total to over $62,426.
Each dollar donated helps the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provide six meals for those facing food insecurity throughout its 27-county service area. That means that the money raised will provide 374,561 meals to people in need.
The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reported that as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of families are facing food insecurity, many for the first time. In central Pennsylvania, one in 20 people is newly food insecure, and more than onethird of them are children, according to the food bank.
A virtual food drive is basically the same food drive concept people have always known - collecting resources for those in need - but with a twist, thanks to smart technology. It is an online initiative through which individuals and groups can visit an interactive grocery store that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for hungry families, veterans, and seniors. Benefits of the virtual model include time savings for busy donors, no expiration dates on food stock, and a supply of funding that can be deployed as needed throughout the year.
In addition to its $10,000 virtual food drive matching donation, PSECU provided the Central Pennsylvania
