M

acdonald Hotels & Resorts has become one of the first hotel and hospitality chains in the UK to make widespread use of the technology that allows guests to explore its hotels prior to booking. Already seven hotels, including Macdonald Compleat Angler at Marlow in the heart of Buckinghamshire and Macdonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh, can now be explored through 360 degree online tours and by the end of 2018 that figure will have risen to around 20 hotels and resorts in the group’s portfolio. It can be difficult to fully appreciate the opulence and comfort levels of the bedrooms, bars and restaurants without actually visiting them, but the new tours bring the hotels and resorts vividly to life. Using high resolution photography and infrared technologies developed initially for the residential real estate industry, guests can now click on the hotel website then walk through the front door, explore the lobby, bars and restaurants, see the full range of bedrooms and even take a stroll in the grounds. It is a real taster of what is on offer and one that delivers not just the layout, but also the ambience.

At Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa near Chester, guests can step into the spacious lounge, with its comfortable seating areas, smart bar and terrace overlooking the grounds. Clicking on the hotspots at reception provides views of the full range of bedrooms. There are tours of the function suite and meeting rooms, along with views of the well-equipped gym and enticing swimming pool. Guests can even step outside for panoramic views of the golf course and the grounds with their spectacular water feature. In all the tours the information hotspots that appear on screen allow for direct booking of rooms and restaurant tables, while the inclusion of floorplans gives conference organisers a unique tool for planning seminars, arranging accommodation for guests, locating break-out sessions and hospitality.

UK strengthens position EasyHotel sales as Europe’s top hotel increase by 33.6% investment destination following expansion

asyHotel saw its sales increase by 33.6% to £16.1m in the six months to 31 March 2018, reflecting its continued expansion and the impact of a new booking system.

he UK has strengthened its position as Europe’s top destination for hotel investment. It took the number one spot in the list for the second year running, ahead of Germany and Spain, according to CBRE’s European Hotel Investor Intentions Survey 2018. A total of 35% of respondents chose the UK as the most attractive target for hotel investment, which was an increase on last year, CBRE said.

Its position at the top was reinforced by a record 2017, which saw the UK hotel sector pull in €6.2b (£5.4b) worth of investment.

The figure was a 39% increase year-on-year, and the highest hotel investment volume of all European countries in 2017. According to CBRE’s latest survey, Germany was the second-most attractive market, favoured by 18% of respondents.

Spain was third, chosen as the top market by 16% of respondents. France was fourth, chosen by 8%, and Ireland took fifth place alongside Italy with 6%. Meanwhile, 94% of respondents said they were planning to invest either the same or more capital into hotel real estate in 2018 compared to 2017. Paul Collins, head of hotel investment properties for UK & Ireland, said: “The UK is attracting a wide range of international investors seeking opportunities in key cities such as London, Manchester and Edinburgh. “Investor appetite for quality regional hotels will remain resilient and despite the UK’s impending withdrawal from the European Union, our survey results suggest that any restrictions to the growth of UK investment volumes are more likely to be because of restricted supply rather than a reduction in demand for hotel assets.”

The operator said it has continued to “significantly outperform the budget market” with revenue per available per room (revpar) up 11.2% in owned hotels and like-for-like revenue up 13.5% in franchised hotels. As it revealed its latest financial results the superbudget chain announced the acquisition of a brownfield site in Chester, where it plans to develop a 109-bedroom hotel. It said the anticipated cost for acquisition and construction will be approximately £7m. Guy Parsons, chief executive of EasyHotel, said: “EasyHotel has traded strongly over the first half of the financial year, outperforming the wider market in both our owned and franchised hotels. “We are mindful that consumers in the UK will continue to be cautious, given the wider macroeconomic and political uncertainty, but believe our super-budget offer positions us well as consumers become increasingly discerning and value conscious. “We continue to make good progress with our growth strategy. The

Chester transaction marks our second investment following the successful fundraising announced in February 2018, taking easyHotel’s pipeline of owned and leased development projects to 1,150 rooms, in addition to the 1,857 franchise rooms currently under development. “The proceeds from our successful fundraising will enable us to accelerate our growth and take advantage of the significant opportunities within our markets, creating shareholder value and underpinning the long-term growth of the EasyHotel brand.” The period to March 2018 saw the opening of an owned 78-bedroom hotel in Liverpool, a 104-bedroom leased hotel in Newcastle and a 87-bedroom franchised hotel in The Hague, the Netherlands, bringing the group to 27 hotels across 18 cities. A £1.5m refurbishment of hotels in Croydon and Glasgow was also completed in March, and plans to add another floor to the company’s 92-bedroom hotel in Old Street, London, have been announced. EasyHotel plans to open hotels in Cardiff, Milton Keynes, Cambridge and Chester in 2019, with properties in Leeds, Sheffield, Ipswich and Barcelona expected later this year.

When the Indian Hotels Company Limited commissioned the design of their Vivanta by Taj – Dwarka, the latest luxury five-star business hotel just outside New Delhi, fire safety regulations scuppered the use of lifts which opened directly into the corridors of the hotel.

With the architects hoping to realise their vision of space and light on the ground floor, but the fire officer demanding fire safety partitioning around the base of the lift shafts, world-renowned manufacturer of fire-resistant glass, Pyroguard, tendered a stylish, high-performance solution.

Striking a balance between practicality and aesthetic excellence Taking on board the design aspiration of the team at Indian Hotels, combined with the fire-safety requirements needed for design approval, Pyroguard envisaged a lobby encased in glass and steel, capable of delivering best-in-class performance credentials and aesthetic appeal in abundance. Working closely with steel frame and glazing specialist Pacific Fire Controls, Pyroguard designed a modern glass wall,

with a glazed door and stylish, thin steel frames which were independently fire tested by Efectis France. The scheme amendment was accepted by both the architects and the fire officers, declaring Pyroguard as their manufacturer of choice for this flagship leisure development.

Meeting the highest of standards A subsidiary of India’s largest business conglomerate, the TATA Group, the Indian Hotels Company is known for its relentlessly high standards, which are visible across its portfolio of hotels. Meeting this quality benchmark head on, Pyroguard supplied 390m2 of ultra-thin lightweight Pyroguard Integrity Plus, which offers protection from flames, smoke and radiant heat for between 30 and 120 minutes. This EW classified product is UV stable and offers exceptional light transmission, making it the perfect solution for encasing the lift lobby, which still needed to be flooded with light. The toughened glass was installed in fire-resistant steel screens and door frames around the lobby, providing protection for hotel occupants making their escape in the event of an emergency. The leadership team at Vivanta bu Taj , Dwarka commented on the success of the scheme adaptations: “From the product credentials to the combined design talents of Pyroguard and Pacific Fire Controls, the adaptations made to the lobby area were of an exceptionally high standard.

Produced by FIRA to give a greater understanding of fire safety issues that may concern those buying or selling outdoor furniture, the new LOFA Outdoor Furniture Flammability Guide provides a basic introduction to the LOFAssured Scheme with essential information for retailers and consumers.

ne of the conditions of LOFA membership is that members must adhere to a code of conduct, part of which is compliance with all current legislation. The new guide explains that, in order to achieve LOFAssured status, LOFA members must pass an audit process supported by Hertfordshire County Council which acts as prime authority and offers assured advice which will be accepted across all county and borough councils. The scheme shows a member company is compliant to flammability regulations and performs sufficient due diligence to ensure products are fit for purpose. Providing answers to 12 key questions relating to flammability concerns, the LOFA Outdoor Furniture Flammability Guide makes it clear that any form of garden/outdoor upholstered furniture that could be set up or carried into a dwelling and conservatory must meet

the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010). These regulations are enforced and policed by all local trading standards departments across the United Kingdom. Flammability labels are an important aspect of fire safely regulation compliance. While some of these are for display purposes, others must be permanently attached to outdoor furniture and the guide gives invaluable details coupled with illustrations of what to look for. Upon walking into the venue you are greeted by utter class and met with the fantastic staff that elevate the hotel to an unrivalled level. To have such a personal service at the all too often snobbish 5 star rating is a very welcome breath of fresh air. One can feel intimidated at times in such venues but the Hilton Bankside have a concept of speaking to each and every guest with a friendly, extremely polite and knowledgeable manner which makes you feel welcome, relaxed and confident in asking any questions you may have. With the rooms ranging from a classic single for the lone guest to an executive suite, everyone can be accommodated and all budgets suited. The rooms are designed to a very high standard, with light tones underlying the strong, bold colours and beautiful material chosen for the furnishings.

Technology leads the way with choice of large screens in the bigger rooms. A wide variety of channels are available on the TV’s plus a huge array of movies, to pass the night or afternoon away. All of the above is a standard trait in the higher level of hotel but there are two stand out points for me, firstly the Spa facilities, it really does bring the abroad feeling to your stay, the pool itself was fantastic, in my opinion there is no better place to unwind than sat beside a pool, with a nice drink in your hand. Secondly, the Oxbo Restaurant, this grand restaurant really takes your breath away just upon entrance, let alone the food! With a wide variety of food to choose from, you will have no concerns in finding something to fit your mood, and if you can’t, allow the staff to help, there knowledge is excellent & they’re very friendly and helpful. With the dimmed lights and the gorgeous scenery, the meal was the perfect way to top a brilliant stay.Overall, there is simply no faults with the Hilton Bankside in every single section they have surpassed all expectations and are setting heights for their competition. Dry Summer Predicted for British Drinkers Research from purchasing company Beacon suggests millennials are driving a teetotal trend

The growing trend for teetotal drinking is predicted to have a big impact this summer by Beacon, Britain’s leading purchasing company, which is urging operators to take note of the change in drinking behaviours and to adapt their soft drinks offering to meet this new demand. Kelley Walker, Purchasing Manager at Beacon, shares insight and recommendations for operators: “We know from industry data that 70% of millennials are more likely to brag about how long it has been since they last drank alcohol, as opposed to how much alcohol they last drank. That is a notable social shift and one that our supplier Oranka Juice Solutions predicts will also result in an increasing number of adults becoming teetotal too. “As the popularity of healthy living and reduced alcohol consumption continues, it is crucial for operators to expand their soft drinks offering so they can cater for this new and growing band of consumers who still want to drink out, but drink less too.”

One way in which operators are able to enhance the appeal of their soft drinks range to customers is by expanding their mocktail offering. By using ingredients that operators already stock, such as syrups, juices and mixers, customers are able to select many new exciting choices at little expense to operators. We would also recommend taking this opportunity to introduce interesting new and popular flavours, which are seen as higher quality, such as elderflower, peach and redberry, as these can add value to mocktails and enable operators to increase their drinks prices.

A high rise in low calorie options

As the health trend continues to play a prominent part in consumers’ decision-making process, the drinks market in general is seeing many adults opt for lower calorie alternatives. Insight from our supplier Brakes shows that, in terms of YOY volume growth of soft drinks, full sugar drinks have seen a 1.4% increase whereas low calorie drinks have seen much larger growth of 14.6% (March 16 vs March 17), highlighting that the trend for a healthy drink is already evident. 1. Is this a dedicated restaurant POS system? Be specific about you want. POS systems are available for retail, too, but to get all the facilities you need, you should invest in a dedicated system that has been developed to meet the special requirements of restaurants.

2. Course management – can you split courses to help the kitchen, and make changes such as a starter as a main course? This should be straightforward to change, and you should also be able to set the kitchen up so the printer or screen displays the correct information to each station, such as a grill chef.


Serving staff should be able to send orders direct to the kitchen, where it integrates with kitchen automation screens or printers so the meal is delivered swiftly. And after the meal, they can take payment at tableside and print out the receipt at a printer in the restaurant – all time-saving activities that please busy diners and help servers create a great guest experience.

4. Menu management - can you manage the menu for different times of day so staff don’t have a huge menu to deal with? This is important in restaurants that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, which could mean an unwieldy menu on the hand-held device. With advanced restaurant management technology you can use the job code of the staff member to choose which screen layout is displayed. You can also easily set events to enable or disable menus based on the terminal or area, the employee, the job code, the time of day, the day of the week or even specific dates.

5. Order management - if diners move tables, can you reallocate everything easily? You should look for a system that provides flexible table maps where you allocate specific orders to specific tables. A good restaurant management system will also allow you to transfer the whole or part thereof the ticket, and merge or split tables up. If using Aloha Guest Manager, for instance, it will suggest a table based on wait time and profitability - it won’t suggest a party of three is seated on a four top if it’s next to another four top that can create an eight.

6. Bill management - is it possible to split bills easily for large parties? This is particularly useful for casual dining restaurants where parties are often large. It saves time for both the diners and the staff, making

table turn quicker and the dining experience seamless.

7. Inventory management can you control stock down to ingredient level? The best restaurant POS software certainly can do this, tracking the most popular menu items, spotting trends and delivering accurate forecast reports. It helps drive informed procurement and reduces waste.

8. Loyalty management – does the system capture important customer data? This is crucial in improving engagement with your customer, because if you know their preferences you can provide tailor-made service and also create email marketing campaigns that will hit the mark.

9. Cash management – can the restaurant POS software track all transactions in full detail? There’s a lot of cashflow in a restaurant business, and it can be hard to keep tabs on. A good system will give full details in real time so your cash position is always immediately visible.

The affluent commuter town of Bearsden in the north west of Glasgow is the lucky recipient of a brand new, family-owned Italian restaurant and delicatessen, thanks to the efforts of renowned Scottish/Italian restaurateur Carlo Andreucetti and catering equipment specialists QED.

Amici di Carlo provides over-the-counter Italian cooked meats, cheeses, cakes and many other delicacies together with pizzas, salads and fresh Italian coffee to eat in or take away. As Carlo explains: ‘After being away from the restaurant business for some time, my partner and I decided to design a new outlet majoring on good quality, fresh Italian ingredients that the people of Bearsden could enjoy throughout the day.

Transformation of former bakers ‘We came across a former bakers’ retail and café premises near Bearsden Cross in the heart of the community and

set about transforming it into an authentic Italian dining experience earlier in 2017. ‘I had known Robert Campbell of QED for many years, as he is a well-regarded figure in the Scottish and UK catering industries. I was particularly impressed with the QED selection of display counters and knew that I could trust Robert and his team to deliver a project that matched our vision for Amici di Carlo. ‘The final result combines Italian warmth and hospitality with the very latest catering technology to create a unique venue that has our personality running all the way through it.

Can’t ignore retail sector giants such as Tesco, Waitrose, Morrison’s, which primarily sell cooked Chickens, and passing their rigorous design standard testing processes acts as a testament to the efficiency of equipment, in this case Fri-Jado Hot Multi-Deck units.

These household name retailers, together with many high street icons including Pret A Manger, Greggs, Itsu, Abokado, and many more are all further testament to the efficiency of the units when holding a great diversity of products. A few examples includes Soups, one-pot Stews, porridge, pastries & pies, hot sandwiches, - and not to forget Wraps which actually started the craze! All offer their customers high quality products held at correct legal temperatures that they can literally just Grab ‘n’ Go.
