Three brilliant women crowned Young Woman Engineers of the Year Three outstanding female engineers have been recognised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for their professional achievements and the work they do encouraging other young people into engineering. 28-year-old senior hardware engineer Naomi Mitchison from Selex-ES has been named the IET Young Woman Engineer of the Year, and will play an ambassadorial role for the profession in the forthcoming months. 20-year-old Jessica Bestwick, who works for Rolls Royce, was presented with the IET’s Mary George Prize for Engineering Society (WES) Award. Recognising outstanding female engineers has never been so important after recent statistics from the IET’s Skills and Demand in Industry survey showed that women represent only 6% of the engineering workforce. Further IET research showed that only 1% of parents of girls were likely to encourage their daughters into engineering, compared to 11% for parents of boys. Naomi said: “I’m really grateful to receive this award and it’s a real honour to be the IET’s Young Woman Engineer of the Year. I’m really looking forward to taking an ambassadorial role for the industry and to do what I can to encourage more women into engineering.” contributing to skills shortages which damage the economy. The shocking reality is that the UK is missing out on half of its potential engineering and technology workforce by failing to attract women into the industry. It also means that women are losing out on interesting and rewarding career opportunities. “A lack of inspirational engineering role models for girls is one of the main reasons for this so we must make sure we show the next generation that engineering is a dynamic, diverse, interesting and challenging career choice. Naomi will be a fantastic role model to all young people thinking of a career in engineering and technology.

employers needing to do more to make their approach to recruitment and retention more female friendly. But it’s also a result of the lack of inspirational engineering role models for girls – which is where our Young Woman Engineer of the Year winners can play a vital role.” and engineering skills crisis. Women currently represent only 6 per cent of the engineering workforce in the UK decade (according to Engineering UK 2014, the state of engineering).

Alstom cuts weeks off turbine testing time with Abb vAriAble-speed drive A major manufacturer of steam turbines has cut the time needed to change its test rig set-up from six weeks to a few hours following the installation of an ABB variable-speed drive (VSD).

Alstom Power of Rugby tests 1/10th scale steam turbine blades in a large pressure vessel. The vessel uses a compressed mixture of air and refrigerant gas to simulate steam and tests the components at low and high pressures.

Steve Finch, project manager for Alstom, says: “The changeover involved replacing the gearbox of the motor so that it could drive the compressor to achieve high or low allow us to lift the gearbox out. The whole process took six weeks.” Another challenge was the age of the DC motor, which, having been installed for some 50 years was proving costly to maintain. Alstom asked three companies to tender for the contract to improve the application, with ABB system integrator Iconsys winning due to its faster delivery schedule. the other bidders,” says Finch. “As well as the low lead time, we had to be sure the supplier could stick to the delivery dates. This was critical, as a number of components were old and fragile and would not meet the Machinery Directive. “Once we had started to rip out the old equipment, there was no going back. We couldn’t put them back in, so we had to the way Iconsys organised the delivery slots with ABB to meet our needs.”

Taking away the gearboxes means we can make changeovers much quicker than before, allowing us to move between low pressure testing and high pressure testing in a couple of hours rather than the weeks it took previously. We can now test for one day and analyse the results the next day, while we are changing over to the other pressure level. “In terms of the installation, the motor went in very well despite the tight area in which it is installed. We have received very good support from ABB and Iconsys and have excellent spares support at good rates.” ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact.

Pacepacker teams up with local university Essex-based packing equipment designer and manufacturer Pacepacker Services Ltd has teamed up with Anglia Ruskin University to help secure the next generation of engineering needs of industry. According to the Royal Academy of Engineering, the demand for graduate engineers exceeds demand across all sectors of the economy, with skilled engineering roles currently accounting for eight per cent of the UK’s workforce. Other sources suggest that the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sectors will need 160,000 engineers, scientists and technicians each year by 2020. there will be a skills shortage of people who want to get into engineering,” comments Pacepacker’s Business Development Manager Paul Wilkinson. “Therefore it’s in everybody’s interest to show people from an early age that engineering doesn’t mean having to stand over a machine and that there are many

Having input into our courses from companies like Pacepacker helps ensure they meet the needs of industry.” Initially the two organisations meet at this year’s PPMA Show, about the company and get a feel for the packaging machinery industry. “It was very much a joint thing. Anglia Ruskin want to approach companies for support and a perspective of real interns and graduates,” said Paul. A visit to the Pacepacker factory mid December, ten students and lecturers received an introduction to packing, palletising

and robot handling systems. Live equipment demos and presentations were made by representatives from Pacepacker’s robot technology partners FANUC UK and Festo. Anglia Ruskin stresses that seeing how engineering theories are applied in real business applications improves student’s understanding of the academic modules. “The feedback we received was that everyone felt they got something from it,” says Paul. “After Christmas we will try and formalise our plans more. There are many opportunities and we look forward to working together in the future.” These include a careers fair in February, potential student internships for particular projects and industrial placements for undergraduates as part of Anglia Ruskin’s engineering courses. Over the years, Anglia Ruskin has been involved in many research collaborations with local businesses, often helping to improve existing products or processes, and with such collaboration sometimes qualifying for grant funding, this is another area both organisations hope to explore going forward. “We are also getting involved with a STEM project with a college in Chelmsford as well to try and get involved with students at a younger age,” adds Paul. Ahad concludes: “The Pacepacker experience is really useful in helping us add practicality to our courses. They are a company with a futuristic view backed with strong organisation, and have been a really good example of a local
