SICK’s deTem Core Light Curtains Set New Standards for Multi-beam Protection SICK has set new standards in the use of multiple light beams to safeguard the area surrounding hazardous machinery with the launch of the deTem Core family of safety light curtains for applications up to SIL3 / PL ‘e’ (Type 4). The deTem2 Core and deTem4 Core multi-beam range complement SICK’s popular deTec4 and deTec2 light curtain range. The deTem’s long range and space-saving capability enable the safety distances around machines to be minimised without compromising productivity. “The SICK deTem4/2 Core multibeam light curtains can be easily integrated into intralogistics machines, materials handling machines and packaging production lines,” says Dr Martin Kidman, SICK’s UK safety product specialist. “They are particularly useful where long range access protection is needed, or where an alternative is needed to extensive physical guarding, or if multiple light curtains are being used to protect a large area. “Setting up and commissioning the deTem light curtains does not require a PC, so operators can quickly be assured of protection against unsafe access with minimal interruption to operation. From the system integrator’s viewpoint, the deTem2 Core and deTem4 Core models are also simple to incorporate into the safety system design.” The SICK deTem4 Core and deTem2 Core offer protection with two, three or four beams with beam separations of 500mm, 400mm or 300mm respectively and can cover a range up to a massive 80 metres, adding further versatility. “Choosing the right solution depends on your application and standards such as EN ISO 13855 for the positioning of safeguards or the EN 415 set of standards for the safety of packaging machines can assist” adds Kidman. The SICK deTem4/2 Core multibeam light curtains are contained in slim housings for ease of installation, with IP65 and IP67 protection ratings, an operating temperature range of

10|

-30oC to +55oC and offer protective field heights in increments of 800mm, 1000mm and 1200mm. The deTem2units are Type 2 devices (IEC 61495) and can be used in SafetyRelated Parts of Control Systems (SRP/CS) up to PLc/ SIL 1. The deTem4 units are Type 4 devices (IEC 61496) and can be used in SRP/CS up to PLe/SIL3. As the SICK deTem4/2 Core light curtains work only in protective mode, configuration and range adjustment is automatic, requiring no additional setup. Diagnostic codes are simple and additional functions can be set up via safety relays, or the SICK Flexi Classic or Flexi Soft safety controllers.

A combination of the innovative mounting bracket, semi-circular contours and alignment LEDs greatly facilitate the set-up process, meaning the SICK’s deTem4/2 Core can be installed quickly and easily in seconds. SICK’s deTem4/2 Cores benefit from a rugged enclosure guaranteeing operation in harsh conditions and a variety of demanding industrial environments, including low temperature. For more information on the SICK deTem4 Core and deTem2 Core safety light curtains, or any of SICK’s safety and protective devices, please contact Andrea Hornby on 01727 831121 or email andrea.hornby@sick.co.uk

Making robots really useful A revolutionary type of robotic hand— marketed as the Shadow Dexterous Hand— is transforming the way many sectors use robots. Development of the ‘hand’ required precision parts for the fingers and fingertips, with services from digital manufacturer Proto Labs to help perfect them. The Shadow Dexterous Hand, from The Shadow Robot Company, takes a totally new approach to robotic manipulation, closely mimicking the dexterity of the human hand. With 20 actuated degrees of freedom, force sensors, and ultra-sensitive touch sensors on the fingertips, the hand can perform many tasks previously beyond the reach of robots. The hand can be used as a tele-operation tool or mounted on a range of robot arms as part of a robot system. Applications include product testing and manufacturing, in sectors ranging from pharmaceuticals to farming.

Matching the process to the product Proto Labs worked with The Shadow Robot Company during the hand’s development to mould the plastic parts for its fingers. With highly specific geometries required for the finger movement, the injection moulded parts achieved both the desired structure and surface finish. Proto Labs also CNC machined aluminium parts for the Pressure Sensor Tactiles, which make the fingertips highly sensitive

A productive relationship The Shadow Robot Company was founded in 1987 by a group of robotics enthusiasts in London. The group has since evolved into one of the longest running robotics companies in the UK, developing dexterous robotics manipulation technologies (‘hands for robots’) and using them to solve realworld problems. Proto Labs has worked with the company for several years, producing high-quality parts in the short timeframes demanded by the innovation process in this fast-moving industry. The flexibility of its production technology is perfectly suited to the high speed of development in robotics.

12|

As The Shadow Robot Company’s Head of Production, Juan LaForga, says, “We have a strong commitment to pushing the boundaries in robotic manipulation. We know we can rely on Proto Labs to support this through its responsiveness and high quality standards.”

Monitoring Oil Flow to Critical Bearings in Heavy Machinery Titan Enterprises reports how it developed an adapted version of its OG5 flowmeter for a leading supplier of mobile rock crushers to monitor oil flow to the rotating cylinder bearing mechanism at the heart of their system. Industrial crushers are used in a wide range of materials processing sectors which include aggregates, landscaping, infrastructure and road building, construction and demolition, mining, waste management and recycling. To ensure reliable operation monitoring of lubricating oil flow and pressure to the main drive bearings in crusher units is critical. The specification for the flowmeter included that it could not impede lubricant flow and had to have a low pressure drop even at full flow with cold, thick oil. While Titan Enterprises standard OG5 flowmeter met the flow requirements the standard 1-inch diameter flow pathway was considered too small as it may restrict lubricant flow. After initial successful proof of concept trials with the standard OG5 flowmeter, Titan redesigned the aluminium version of the meter to have 1.25-inch diameter connections to reduce the pressure drop at minimum operating temperature and maximum flow. In addition, a transparent cover was fitted to the flowmeter so that the operator could visually verify oil flow. Further customisation allowed the flowmeter to be plugged directly into the customers wiring loom and the body of the meter was even anodised to match the colour of the crushing machines they were being fitted to.

An industrial crusher in operation

Customised version of OG5 flowmeter

The resultant flow monitoring device has proved to be very reliable and to date nearly 500 units have been installed in the clients crushing machines. Compact in design, Titan Enterprises OG5 oval geared flowmeter is designed to give high performance with a low cost of ownership. Fully IP67 / NEMA 4 compliant, the OG5 flowmeter is optimised for measuring the flow of viscous fluids at pressures of up to 400 bar and temperatures up to 150°C. With a standard flow range from 0.5 to 100 litres / minute on 30Cstk oil the rugged OG5 flowmeter can routinely achieve outstanding accuracy (0.5%) and repeatability (0.1%). For further information on the OG5 flowmeter please visit www.flowmeters.co.uk/og5-pdoval-gear-flow-meters-positivedisplacementswept-volumeflowmeters/ or contact Titan Enterprises on +44-1935-812790 / sales@flowmeters.co.uk. With over 40 years’ experience in flowmeter innovation and manufacture, Titan Enterprises philosophy of “pushing the envelope by trying to do things a “little different and better” has resulted in sales to over 40 countries worldwide and a repeat purchase rate of 95%.

KEEPING UP WITH EUROPE’S ELECTRIC TRANSITION By Nigel Blackaby, Director of International Conferences, PennWell The European electricity sector is evolving at an unprecedented pace, requiring the entire industry to innovate, transform and collaborate like never before. Electricity is set to become the medium for a clean energy future. But in the process, the power industry will morph into something that looks rather different to today. In particular, digital technology is sparking fundamental change in the generation, delivery and consumption of European electricity. Perhaps most notably, the rise of decentralisation and the move to electrify economic activity such as heating, cooling and transport are both crucial steps towards decarbonisation, and together are a driving force behind the focus on smart grids and smart cities. Of course, in order for this to work, the industry will need to embrace cutting-edge technological trends such as the Internet of Things. This won’t be easy. But the opportunities will come for the smartest and best prepared.

Giants in transition The power sector is becoming a platform upon which established utilities and technology providers are coming together with a plethora of new entrants. With this, established business models are changing, with major players such as ABB, GE and Siemens all developing into digital-first companies. This transition is set to redefine the future of the continent’s electricity market. As it gathers pace, there is a genuine and vital need for a platform that provides clarity, facilitates connections and defines the industry’s roadmap. For 25 years PennWell’s POWER-GEN Europe has been leading the charge. But such unprecedented change calls for a new approach. That’s why this year we’ve launched Electrify Europe – a unique platform where players from sectors across the whole electricity value chain can meet to share and develop new ideas and solutions.

Creating the narrative for change Electrify Europe is the world’s first platform event dedicated to the convergence of the power sector with the drivers of digitisation, decentralisation and electrification from both within and outside the sector, covering the whole supply chain. It is Europe’s largest hub focused on the unrivalled convergence within the electric power industry, as well as with the ICT, IoT & AI, Telecoms and eMobility sectors.

16|

The event will provide an opportunity for the best and brightest business and technological minds, including R&D trailblazers, corporate and start-up visionaries and political leaders to provide insight into a market that is growing in complexity – building a dynamic and rapidly expanding ecosystem in which economic ideas, technical solutions and political visions co-operate, collaborate, and co-create. Ultimately, this is how we as an industry can keep up with the electric transition and take the power industry in Europe forward into a new, exciting future. Electrify Europe will take place in Vienna, 19-21 June 2018. For more information, visit www.electrify-europe.com

FKM seal material Vi 840

A breakthrough in the valves sector and gas industry One of the central demands from the valve sector and gas industry has been for a seal material that has suitable low temperature flexibility, and which conforms to the DIN EN 14141 standard. Up until now, there simply hasn’t been a suitable FKM seal material available. But now, the independent seal manufacturer COG has developed a special FKM compound which fulfils the requirements of the valve and gas industry.

A new high-tech compound for the valves sector and gas industry For some years now, one of the central demands from the valve sector and gas industry has been for a seal material that has suitable low temperature flexibility, and which conforms to the DIN EN 14141 standard. Up until now, there simply hasn’t been a suitable FKM seal material available. But now, the independent seal manufacturer C. Otto Gehrckens has developed the low temperature flexible ‘Vi 840’ FKM compound. This has been successfully tested according to DVGW DIN EN 682 (type GBL). What’s more, this material has that all-important low temperature flexibility of more than -40°C, which means it therefore fulfils the requirements of DIN EN 14141. With a TR-10 value of -40.1°C, this high-tech compound is suitable for use at temperatures of right down

18|

to -46°C, and therefore fulfils the important API 6A and 6D standards. Furthermore, its resistance has been demonstrated and proven according to the DIN EN 13787 standard. According to the manufacturer, this combination of properties for an FKM seal material is hitherto unique in the market, and therefore represents an enormous advance in seal technology for the valves sector and gas industry. TPC Desktop - Total Packaging Control a MAP gas analyser with integrated leak + burst testing

To add to its TPC family, EMCO is launching the TPC Desktop, a Total Packaging Control system that not only analyses the O2 and CO2 MAP gases at the point they are pumped into pack but optionally incorporates leak and burst tests – thus offering complete control over the packaging process through a fast, single, sequential test. • • • • • • • • • •

O2 or O2 + CO2 with nitrogen balance Zirconia or electrochemical oxygen sensor options Option integrated leak & burst tester functionality for Desktop system O2 + CO2 + leak & burst in one single, sequential test Leak tester offers sensitivity down to 10 micron hole size Burst test pressure from 0 - 999 mbar Full traceability: operator, line, product, batch, date, time etc. USB port for external backup, bar code reader and / or printer Large, bright 8 inch colour touchscreen Custom stainless steel case

The systems’ rugged engineering is twinned with cutting edge technology to ensure it performs accurately and faultlessly over extended periods with virtually no downtime. Its three measurement systems can be used in any combination on any single pack, making it very efficient in terms of labour time, footprint & pack wastage. The system incorporates four highly accurate and independent sensor systems - an electrochemical oxygen sensor option, a NDIR sensor for carbon dioxide, and mass flow and pressure sensors to measure leaks and bursts. Unlike most systems, which need to use unrealistically high pressures for leak detection (often creating leaks in the process), the sensitivity of the EMCO detector means low (20-30 mbar) pressures can be used. The detector correlates results to EHS to evaluate the leak, displaying the equivalent hole size in microns. An intuitive red/green light pass/fail system guarantees simplicity in use. Traceability is via three separate routes - on screen; USB memory stick; or via the ethernet onto a network. The data can be opened & trended directly in Excel without the need to buy or learn bespoke software. The system is simple to operate via its large, clear and bright 8 inch LCD touchscreen. It also offers full traceability of the operator, product line, product, batch, date, time etc. which is accessed via a standard USB port for external backup, and a bar code reader or printer. As with other EMCO MAP and preservation related engineering products, the TPC is built to an exceptionally high and rugged standard and should give many years of trouble-free and down-time-free service. It also meets all appropriate British, European and other formal standards. Contact information email: info@emcouk.com web: www.emcopackaging.com

Selwood sponsors ground-breaking training scheme for young people A pioneering apprenticeship scheme to train the next generation of skilled workers is being supported by leading plant specialist Selwood. The company is sponsoring a Hampshire-wide training programme that is the first of its kind in the UK and sets up young people for a career in the civil engineering industry. The apprenticeship scheme is led by the Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group – a newly-formed consortium of prominent civil engineering companies in Hampshire. The group was created in response to a shortage of skilled staff in the industry, creating an overreliance on agency staff. The scheme puts young, enthusiastic people through an intensive training programme – based at the Civil Engineering Training Centre at HMS Daedalus at Lee-on-the-Solent – and prepares them for life on site while guaranteeing employment with one of the groups within the consortium. As a key supplier of plant equipment to many of the employers, Selwood offered to become official sponsor of the programme. Selwood, based in Chandler’s Ford, donated equipment for training, including a dumper and roller, as well a large number of other products such as grease guns and plant nappies for

containing fluid spills. This is the first year of the scheme, being run in partnership with Fareham College, and the first intake was in September. The two-year Civil Engineering and Groundworks Apprenticeship begins with 20 weeks of training at the Civil Engineering Training Centre before the course continues at site level. Apprentices are assigned a mentor on site who will assist in completion of the apprenticeship. Aaron Boyce, Key Accounts Manager at Selwood, who has been co-ordinating Selwood’s involvement in the scheme, said: “As I come from a long line of groundworkers, it was something that I was keen to support and this was backed up by the Selwood board who were only too happy to support this scheme. “It is a real honour for Selwood to be sponsoring a scheme that is skilling up young people and giving them the opportunity for a successful career in the civil engineering industry.” Kevin Miskella, who is Construction Director for Stockbridge-based Carlton Civil Engineering, a member of the Solent consortium, said: “We have been working since January to reach our goal of being set up and running for September and we have achieved just that.

“We could not have achieved so much, so quickly without the support of key partners such as Selwood. “The fact that companies like Selwood have been so willing to assist means that our dream is now a reality. “From early next year, thanks to a concerted team effort, we will be producing new local labour resources to man and run our sites to keep up with the demand for a younger bettertrained workforce in our area.” The Solent Civil Engineering Employers’ Group is being led by the directors of major companies across the Solent area including: Aeropark Developments, Baram, Blanchard Wells, Blaze Construction, Carlton Civil Engineering, Dyer & Butler, Gracelands, John Reilly, PTC, Knights Brown, R&W and Southern Concrete.

Manchester students show off their STEM skills with PPMA BEST More than 110 students from 10 Manchester schools joined the PPMA BEST for its first free, interactive STEM Day, held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester on Monday 13th November. Participating students were invited to take on the Mars Rover Challenge, set by national education charity The Smallpeice Trust. The challenge, which used a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 core set and system, transformed students into engineers in space as they built and programmed a remote-controlled vehicle to traverse a simulated Mars landscape in search of water. Using a combination of criticalthinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills, two schools were identified for their innovation and team-work. Mosslands School was recognised for the most innovative design, while Walkden High School scooped the top prize for best overall team. The students were recognised not only for the time taken to complete the course, quality of build and innovation but for their exceptional team work and collaboration. To celebrate their success, the students at Walkden High School were awarded a LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 core set and system, worth £360, to take STEM learning back to the classroom. Speaking about the event and the Mars Rover Challenge, Mrs. Dawson of Walkden High School, Manchester, said: “It was a challenge using an unfamiliar programming language but both groups rose to the task in hand. The judges were impressed by both teams’ enthusiasm and commitment to solving the problems. Students have said the day was

28|

‘really fun, entertaining, challenging and interesting’. I am very proud to work with such gifted, respectful students, and when more when they announced our school had won!” Feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive, with one student claiming the experience ‘could help us in future’ as it gave ‘a good insight into the robotics industry.” The event, supported by the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA) and British Automation and Robotics Association (BARA), was the first in a series of STEM events to encourage UK students to consider a career in the engineering and manufacturing industries. STEM days are widely acknowledged to support the aim of the National Curriculum and schools’ agenda by linking the curriculum to the wider world and demonstrating the direct relevance of subjects taught in school with the world of work. Speaking about the importance of encouraging young people to consider a career in the engineering and manufacturing industries, Dr. Andrew Mint, CEO of the PPMA Group of Associations said: “We recognise that youth engagement is essential to what we do as we know that the skills shortage is putting productivity growth at risk. The aim of our STEM day is to ensure that today’s students understand the exciting opportunities available to them. We hope our efforts will be beneficial to our industry and the students themselves.” Addressing the importance of engaging with young people,

James Selka, CEO, Manufacturing Technologies Association, added: “It’s more than important – its vital and fundamental. We all talk about the skills gap and attracting young people into the industry, but if we don’t engage, how are our school’s teachers going to be aware of the possibilities for their students? We’ve got a worldwide reputation for engineering in this country, and if we’re going to keep that leading position, we have to do so much better. After all, what other industry offers joining at 16, a PHD and no debt?” Following the challenge, students were invited to explore the museum’s Robots exhibition which features a wide range of robotic innovations from an animatronic baby to ‘Harry’ – a trumpet-playing robot from Japan. PPMA BEST, established in 2014 by the PPMA Group of Associations, aims to encourage young people to enter and develop within the processing, packaging, automation and vision engineering industries. It offers a series of programmes including financial grants for engineering apprenticeships, match funded bursaries for engineering undergraduates and STEM days for secondary schools. By addressing the on-going skills shortage and tackling short and longer-term recruitment needs, the charity aims to help the industry and its 500-member companies by growing the pool of next generation engineers through education and training. The event was also supported by KUKA Robotics, Industrial Cadets, Siemens and Renishaw PLC. For more information on PPMA BEST, please contact Danny Reed on danny. reed@ppma.co.uk

MTA and Factory 2050 at the AMRC partner for exciting Industry 4.0 feature for MACH 2018 Low cost automation can revolutionise SME’s businesses The Manufacturing Technologies Association and the University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), have partnered to put together a unique feature to demonstrate cost effective adaption of Industry 4.0 Technologies at MACH 2018. MACH 2018 is the place to discover new technologies that shape the world we live in. The AMRC’s Factory 2050 is the UK’s first state of the art factory entirely dedicated to conducting collaborative research into digital assembly and flexible component manufacturing. The two are staging a joint showcase of cost effective solutions for the adaption and integration of Industry 4.0 technologies into SME manufacturing businesses. Recent figures (from the Made Smarter Review – see below) found that the positive impact on UK manufacturing of faster innovation and adoption of Industrial Digitalisation Technologies could be as much as £455bn over the next decade. James Selka, CEO of the MTA, said of the project “The Integrated Manufacturing Group at Factory 2050 and we at the MTA understand that it is vital to cut through some of the jargon and hyperbole around Industry 4.0 and show first-hand the practical advantages Big Data can bring to an SME business.” He continued “In the light of the publication of the Government’s Industrial Digitalisation Review – ‘Made Smarter’ we must demonstrate to British industry the benefits this technology can bring to their businesses. It is our job to bridge the gap between industry and academia and MACH 2018 is exactly the platform to do this.”

36|

The idea behind the project stems from the perceived implications in terms of cost and complexity faced by SME’s when wanting to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies – a big barrier identified in Made Smarter. By providing a variety of solutions on how current capital equipment can be adapted to meet the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution the exhibit will demonstrate how Big Data can help companies streamline their production and improve cycle times - without making huge investments. The overriding theme running through MACH 2018 is interconnected technology and the future of manufacturing. MACH showcases live working machinery and staying true to this tradition the combined feature will demonstrate up to six separate manufacturing cells. These cells will replicate familiar manufacturing environments that have been integrated with Industry 4.0 Technologies. James Fudge, Head of Events at the MTA, said “This is an exciting project we have undertaken with the AMRC’s Integrated Manufacturing Group at Factory 2050. MACH has always been the place to go to find

the latest technologies and this joint venture should prove fascinating for visitors and exhibitors alike.” He continued “We understand the cost constraints that face SME businesses; it is important to let companies know that Industry 4.0 technology is accessible to them. You can take an outdated machine and retrofit sensors to it allowing you to get real-time data and to detect through-put fault. It will be really useful to businesses to be shown some of the thigs you can do to the installed base that can make a difference.” The AMRC’s Head of Digital, Dr Rab Scott, said: “The MTA’s MACH exhibition gives the AMRC a great opportunity to demonstrate that the adoption of digital technologies can be achieved at low cost and that the impact on businesses can be transformational. “This project is a prime example of the work that the AMRC does nationally with manufacturing SMEs. On the stand, we will also be demonstrating what the future of assembly and manufacturing could look like, showing what the value of these technologies could be.”

M

ore than 150 talented future software engineers from schools in 16 countries gathered in Abu Dhabi for the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge world finals. The bright young engineers, aged 11-19, used computer coding to programme miniature remotecontrolled four-wheel-drive vehicles they have designed and built for a two-day competition at the Yas Marina Circuit. One of the challenges saw the vehicles negotiate a demanding course that wound its way over and through Land Rover Discovery SUVs. The contest, which supports curriculum learning, included an autonomous car coding challenge, reflecting Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects and a desire to recruit the next generation of engineers to design and develop future electric, connected and autonomous vehicles. The surprise coding task required them to optimise an existing set of code to help a model SUV complete a pre-set course in the fastest possible time. K-EVO from Portugal were crowned 2017 champions; with Panthera, Malaysia and Fair Dinkum 4x4, Australia in second and third places respectively. Alex Heslop, Director of Electrical Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “I am hugely passionate about engineering and inspiring more young people to consider STEM careers. The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools competition will help us fill exciting future roles in software systems, cyber systems, app development and

38|

graphics performance. The new coding challenge is a great way to introduce young people to the importance of software innovation in our cuttingedge business.” Team leader Luís Ligeiro, aged 17, said: “The challenge has provided us with fantastic hands-on experience of running a mini-business and writing our own code. We were all interested in STEM before but now, after learning all about the Land Rover Discovery production processes and electronics, we’d love to be engineers innovating and creating vehicles in the future.” The global competition has helped the company reach more than three million young people since 2000. Teams qualify for the world finals through a series of regional and national events, with the winning team, K-EVO having come first in the Portuguese National Final.

The winning vehicle features multilink suspension, replicating the Land Rover Discovery, and was made using natural, modern and recycled materials such as biopolymers, plastics and aluminium which were a key consideration in the judges’ scoring. The UK’s leading investor in research and development, Jaguar Land Rover has launched a global initiative which aims to recruit more than 1,000 electronic and software engineers to its expanding business. In June this year, the company launched an innovative, mixed-reality recruitment app in collaboration with virtual band Gorillaz to find global future engineering talent. Fast & Reliable Tool for Testing Solar Panels FLIR Systems has published a technical note that discusses the advantages that thermal cameras offer for solar panel evaluation. Quality assurance is of fundamental importance for solar panels. The failure-free operation of the panels is a prerequisite for efficient power generation, long life, and a high return on the investment. To ensure this failure free operation a fast, simple and reliable method to evaluate a solar panel’s performance is required, both during the production process and after the panel has been installed. This technical note illustrates how thermographic inspection of photovoltaic systems, such as solar panels, allows the fast localization of potential defects at the cell and module level as well as the detection of possible electrical interconnection problems. Further, unlike other methods, thermal inspections may be carried out under normal operating conditions over large areas and do not require a system shut down. Thermal imaging cameras are already an established R&D tool for the

evaluation of solar cells and panels. For these sophisticated measurements, usually high-performance cameras with cooled detectors are used under controlled laboratory conditions. This technical note demonstrates that the use of thermal imaging cameras for solar panel evaluation need not be restricted to the field of research. The authors show how the latest generation of FLIR uncooled thermal imaging cameras are currently being used for solar panel quality control before installation and regular predictive maintenance check-ups after the panel has been installed. The technical note concludes that inspection with a new generation uncooled handheld thermal imaging camera, starting with the quality control in the installation phase, followed by regular check-ups facilitates complete and simple

system condition monitoring. This thermal imaging inspection protocol has been shown to help to maintain the solar panels’ functionality and to extend their lifetime. Using thermal imaging cameras for solar panel inspections will therefore drastically improve the operating company’s return on investment. Ceo Of Royal Academy Of Engineering Gowns Up to Receive Honorary Award Rear Admiral Philip Greenish received the award of Honorary of the University for services to engineering INNOVATIVE engineers are vital to the UK’s future prosperity, said Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Academy of Engineering when he received his honorary award from the University of Huddersfield. Rear Admiral Philip Greenish, a former Royal Navy officer who has been RAE CEO since 2003. After receiving his award, the Rear-Admiral saluted the role played by the University of Huddersfield in many areas of technical advance. He said that: “In these challenging times, it is engineers that are leading the way in addressing so many of society’s needs, including the needs of the economy. The UK’s future success would depend on engineering innovation, researcher and entrepreneurship.” The Honorary Doctorate was bestowed by University of Huddersfield Vice-Chancellor Professor Bob Cryan – himself a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering – at one of the November sequence of awards ceremonies. The oration describing the career of Rear Admiral Greenish told how, as an engineering graduate, he served with the Navy for almost 30 years, beginning as weapons engineer in destroyers and frigates, with his career culminating in promotion to Rear Admiral with responsibility for engineering, personnel and front-line logistics support for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. “Philip is passionate about engineering,” said Professor Cryan. “He is positive about the progress that has been made in the understanding and appreciation of engineers and engineering by government, but is determined to increase the recognition of engineering in UK society more generally.” Rear Admiral Philip Greenish Philip Greenish joined the Royal Navy in 1969 as he started an engineering science degree at Durham University. He graduated in 1972 and spent much of the next 15 years in destroyers and frigates or in design and support roles ashore, including a spell working for the Canadian Navy in Nova Scotia. Later jobs were mostly in the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall. In his final role, as a Rear Admiral, he was

50|

responsible for engineering, personnel and logistic support for the front-line of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies. The Academy has grown significantly under his leadership with a vision to put engineering in the heart of society where it is in reality, if not yet in perception. The Academy’s elected Fellowship of outstanding engineers provides leadership across all fields of engineering. With the UK facing a difficult future, its role, and the role of engineering, has never been more important. Philip sits on Southampton University Council and is a Board Member of EngineeringUK. He has served on two research councils, was a founding trustee of the Science Media Centre and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology. He was appointed CBE in 2003.

NSK donates €20,000 to UNICEF As in 2016, NSK has again this year decided to forego giving any Christmas presents to customers across Europe, instead donating €20,000 to humanitarian charity UNICEF, which is working tirelessly to protect children and their families from danger all over the world. “We take our corporate social responsibilities very seriously,” states Dr Jürgen Ackermann, CEO NSK Europe Ltd. “We selected UNICEF for this year’s donation as it provides vital humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries across the globe. This year we have decided that our donation should support South Sudan. I am sure our customers will understand that this donation is being made instead of giving corporate Christmas presents, and will join with us in supporting the important work of UNICEF around the world.” The conflict in South Sudan, which first erupted in 2013, is having devastating consequences for the country’s population. Women and children face immediate risks of violence, displacement, hunger and lifethreatening diseases. UNICEF’s work in South Sudan includes the provision of screening and treatment of children for malnutrition, as well as safe water and sanitation. Children are immunised, while separated children are registered so they can be reunited with their families. Furthermore, with education interrupted for vast numbers of children, UNICEF’s ‘Back to Learning’ initiative aims to rehabilitate hundreds of damaged classrooms and provide thousands of children forced out of school with access to education. As an example of what UNICEF could do with the NSK donation, 54,545 portions of peanut paste could be acquired. This basic foodstuff offers around 500 calories and vital vitamins and trace elements. Each undernourished child would receive three packets daily for 4-6 weeks.

Chair of US Chemical Safety Board to deliver esteemed process safety lecture Vanessa Sutherland, Chair and CEO of the US Chemical Safety and Hazards Investigation Board (CSB), will deliver the fourth Trevor Kletz Memorial Lecture, at the Institution of Chemical Engineers’ (IChemE) Hazards 28 conference next May. The lecture will take place more than a year since US President Trump announced plans to scrap the federal agency, a proposal which shocked the process safety community. At the time, former Head of the US Environmental Protection Agency Christine Todd Whitman condemned the proposal as being short-sighted, and said; “If you want to put American people in danger, this is the way to do it.” However, Trump’s budget proposal is still not confirmed, and in the interim Sutherland has led the CSB in several important investigations. Most recently, the agency announced an investigation of the fires at the Arkema chemical plant in Texas, after it was flooded by Hurricane Harvey in August this year. The Board has had a major impact on the development of process safety legislation in the US. It’s Drivers of Critical Chemical Safety Change programme is aimed at implementing change that will achieve national-level safety improvements. Sutherland’s lecture will focus on identifying critical chemical safety challenges and improvements, based on her in-depth experience investigating serious incidents. Her talk will also focus on shared ownership of process safety principles, something Sutherland is particularly passionate about. Speaking at an event in April 2016, hosted by the American Institution of Chemical Engineering (AIChE), she said: “Process safety is always an evolution. You have to be open to learning. It is joined by

56|

that common bond of shared responsibility.” Trevor Kletz died in 2013. A lecture in his name was created to preserve his legacy, and continue to develop best practice in process safety. Kletz was a regular contributor to Hazards from its inception in 1960, and is widely regarded as the founding father of inherent safety. Sutherland, on accepting IChemE’s offer to deliver the lecture, said: “I am pleased to accept this invitation and recognise the magnitude of having such an honour, as the past presenters are some of the most respected professionals in the industry. Formula One Analyst, Mark Gallagher delivered the lecture in 2017, and The Honourable Mr Justice Haddon-Cave (who led the RAF Nimrod crash inquiry) took to the podium in 2016. Pumped up about 4.0 potential

With the race towards Industry 4:0 on, progressive cavity (PC) pump specialist SEEPEX is assisting SME customers, particularly those starting from a ‘low tech’ baseline, to think ahead and utilise Smart pump technology to boost process productivity. “All processes, no matter how simple, can benefit from preparation for Industry 4.0 or ‘future proofing’,” states Lesley Eaton, Business Development and Marketing Manager for SEEPEX UK. “There’s a general misconception that enhanced connectivity, Smart Manufacturing and Industry 4:0 are for big operations with ultra-sophisticated data capture strategies. Yet, like most decisions in business, whatever your size or sector, it’s about thinking smarter, selecting the right pumping equipment for the job and factoring in current and future demands.” At the start of 2017, the manufacturers’ organisation EEF published its 4IR report*. Gauging where organisations are in their transformation process, the research offered some valuable insight. However, this report, like many others, signals that there remains uncertainty from some about how it will apply to their business. While 99% agreed that the 4th industrial revolution will be about getting actionable insights from data, 58% of those interviewed reported that they are still getting to grips with the concept and are less certain about what it actually entails. Undoubtedly, technology and its application will be the enabler. And while there is a widespread expectation among companies that investment in new technology will be required, the EEF report indicated that 61% of manufacturers agree they could be using current digital technologies more effectively to boost their levels of productivity.

Joining the dots Smart PC pumps offer a perfect example of how embedded technology can help even the most common and straightforward equipment to optimise processes. Many – if not most – industries use pumps to transfer products between storage vessels and a variety of different processes. In addition to enabling product and range development, valuable data, when captured effectively, can assist with forward planning. Take the integration of software. Done effectively, this can assist with automated production, and online machine data capture, and this makes preventative and predictive maintenance a realistic possibility. Importantly for businesses tight on resources, it doesn’t mean more data is being generated; the data just becomes more accessible and relevant.

Sensors and sensibility Intelligent data generated by sensors is the basis for all smart machine control and automation, and is equally applicable in PC pump control. An example of application

60|

could be using transducers as pressure or lever controls which speed up and slow down the PC pump, varying the flow rate as required. Rather than using an on/off response when fill levels are reached, these pressure transducers send a variable signal to a PLC integrated to a variable speed drive. Because the transducer detects differences in vessel product levels, the speed at which the product is delivered increases or slows accordingly. This in turn reduces the wear rate of the pump, extending the service life and reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) of equipment. Likewise, there are a number of PC pumps fitted with sensors using IO-Link interface capabilities to switch pumps on or off. Replacing these with variable sensing technology reduces the reliance on remote processing of data, enabling intelligent analysis of performance as well as enabling variable flow rates. In addition, flow meters linked to variable frequency drives (VFDs) allow for real time feedback and speed control of motors to achieve accurate product flow. When the information from flow meters is analysed in conjunction with pressure transducers then PC pump wear is determined and predictive maintenance schedules can be set up. Pip ewo r k , v al ve s a n d d ow nst rea m equipment can all affect the performance of the pump. As pumps become digitally integrated into customers’ processes a properly selected PC pump can collect data to provide diagnostic tools for the entire system. For example, an unexpected pressure increase could signal a product change, a closed valve or a pipework obstruction. Additionally, an increase in measured flow could indicate narrowed pipework. As pipework becomes fouled, for example, the diameter decreases yet this can often remain undetected until problems arise. Using a comparison of theoretical flow vs actual flow at a given pump speed can provide an early diagnosis of the condition of pipework, enabling remedial action to be taken before issues occur.

Scalable solutions catering to future demands When selecting pump technology, it’s equally important to consider existing technology infrastructures and industrial control systems and how your new technology will integrate into common supervisory platforms, such as SCADA. The development of progressive cavity smart dosing pumps (SDPs) by SEEPEX caters to these future requirements. Used either as

a standalone item or integrated easily into SCADA systems, these PC pumps maintain accurate flow using continuous real time feedback and adjustment to overcome product and process changes that affect flow rates. To simplif y integration, the SDP has an intelligent V FD incor porating a PLC and special software and fieldbus communications. Input interfaces can be via a centralised system, a handheld HMI or by analogue and digital devices, which means that in addition to controlling the pump operation, data can be collected remotely and a picture of performance becomes clearer. Pump and system protection can also be managed using temperature and pressure sensors linked to the integral PLC. The design of PC pumps is ideally suited to smart operation as the linear nature of the pump performance curve – flow rate vs pump speed – enables closed loop feedback. “The signal from a flow meter on the pump discharge is used to automatically adjust the speed of the pump when required,” explains Lesley.

Connecting to untold opportunities Despite enormous advances, technology connecting information with the physical world has barely scratched the service. Yet, the industrial revolution is rapidly pervading every part of our lives. Even a simple pump, tasked with distributing product from one source to another, becomes exponentially more valuable when connected. Data from one sensor can be combined with data from another and linked with cloud intelligence to make smarter, even autonomous, business decisions. Rather than just connecting for connectivity’s sake, many industrial businesses see connected devices as a transformational opportunity. As a recent report from KPMG concludes, ‘the real value of 4.0 comes not from component technologies or capabilities, but rather from smarter processes that integrate automation, data, analytics, manufacturing and products in a way that delivers unique competitive advantage and unlocks new business models’. “The reality is that data connectivity and Industry 4:0 permeate every aspect of every business, large and small,” adds Lesley. “With scalable options, there’s the potential to revolutionise how we work and cut machine downtime by providing continuous feedback on performance.”

Global fastenings manufacturer and distributor, TR Fastenings, has invested in a new 3D printer. The printer is an SLA (StereoLithic Apparatus) machine which delivers a far superior quality to the FDM (Fused Deposit Modelling) equipment replacing the existing model.

TR Fastenings invests in new state of the art SLA 3D printer

Until recently, SLA printing was prohibitively expensive, but after a group of American MIT students designed and received funding for the ‘Form 1’ model, costs reduced. The Form 1 machine has now been replaced by the Form 2 model, which TR has purchased. While most of the components supplied by TR to its customers are metal, plastic prototypes are ideal to check the form rather than the function of a part. The printer will be used to create these prototypes for TR customers who want to explore new variations on existing parts or components used in their production process. The TR team will use its extensive library of CAD designs along with the printer’s sophisticated software to create variations of different fasteners for customers to view and test. Keith Gibb, Head of Web Development at TR, comments: “We first invested in 3D printing technology 3 years ago by purchasing the FDM machine, which is simple to use and ideal for our first foray into the process but doesn’t produce the best quality parts. “The speed and accuracy of the new printer has already allowed us to produce prototypes for a number of customers in both the automotive and electronics sectors. We made plastic prototypes of metal parts which meant one customer could check fit and form of a new part in 3 days rather than laying down expensive tooling and waiting for weeks. We’ve also produced fully working prototypes of injection moulded parts that were with the customer in 24 hours – the actual injection moulded samples would have taken 6 weeks.”

RockStar® ModuPlug More freedom – Less effort RockStar® ModuPlug is setting new standards combining power, signals and data in one connector and is the platform for future, innovative modular connectivity solutions Industrial applications are becoming increasingly complex. The demands being made of the connectivity used are growing at the same time. Functionality in the smallest of installation spaces, safe installation and a fast retrofitting process are just some of the product properties being called for. RockStar® ModuPlug addresses these demands by enabling the flexible combination of all the necessary functions for power, signal and data transmission in a single application-specific interface. New and more compact inserts allow for a significantly increased functional density compared to previous solutions.

Half the pitch size, twice the module slots Up until now, there were two standard module widths for heavyduty connectors: ‘Single 1.0’ and ‘Double 2.0’. Weidmuller have broken away from this standard, and are creating new dimensions with the intermediate sizes of ‘Half 0.5’ and ‘Single Plus 1.5’. Four different module widths make for unprecedented levels of flexibility and allow for the construction of particularly spacesaving connector solutions. The modules reduce the amount of space required and cut costs when compared with fixed-pole inserts and other modular plug-in connector systems. The sophisticated frames and modules can be installed with extreme ease and integrated into HDC enclosures with the IP65 and IP68 protection classes. You can even use the RockStar® ModuPlug to supplement existing applications without any need to make system adjustments.

More and Less - Discover your freedom with RockStar® ModuPlug More power – Less weight Users of the RockStar® ModuPlug have the option of either using more functional modules within the same installation space or having the same functions as before but with a smaller frame and housing. In addition to space savings, the latter option also helps to achieve weight savings, making it particularly suitable for applications in the fields of railway engineering and wind energy.

More signals – Less space - transfer more signals with the same enclosure dimensions: Thanks to a higher contact density – 36 signal contacts at a rated voltage of 250 V, the double module HD36 achieves 50 percent more contacts in the same space as the market standard.

More data – Less limits - A new level of data transfer Two Cat.6A cables each with 10 Gbits can now be integrated in a single module. The use of standard M12 connector technology achieves optimal EMC values and the 360˚ shield connection offers maximum protection against external interference.

70|

More options – Less costs - save installation space, weight and costs: you can choose

between four different module widths. The halved pitch size allows twice the number of module slots in the frame, plus the reduced pitch separation allows more functionality in the same space.

More convenience – Less risk The innovative design of RockStar® ModuPlug offers assembly and disassembly without tools. A fixed locking position provides stability for faster and easier assembly. Incorrect connection is avoided through a unique coding system. In addition, there’s less wiring work required thanks to the ability to connect two PE cables of up to 10 mm².

RockStar® ModuPlug in use: Machinery High performance in the smallest of spaces with RockStar® ModuPlug

The challenges in machine construction are numerous: flexible

machine units need to be networked. In robotics, space is limited to a bare minimum. On production lines, processing of very high data volumes must be ensured. With RockStar® ModuPlug, you can transmit more signals in less space saving on connector costs.

Transportation Reliable jumper cables with RockStar® ModuPlug are a durable solution for secure data and signal transmission within the train. In transport engineering, increasing amounts of data and signals need to be transferred reliably. Special air-conditioned containers place exacting demands on power transmission. More functionality in the same area enables space and weight saving. Weidmuller’s slim 100 A modules ensure high power transmission with a low space requirement.

Energy - Efficient and secure with RockStar® ModuPlug Wind turbines have to be operated efficiently, reliably and with low maintenance. Measurement data should be transferred using as little space as possible. The high-speed data module can accommodate megabit and gigabit data inserts. It offers transfer rates of up to 10 Gbits in the smallest of installation spaces.

An easy choice

Cost-efficient logistics drives in three preferred configurations

Three variants, much flexibility

Illustration 1: Standardization can save up to 70% of TCO for drives in conveying systems

In plants with many drive units, the total cost of ownership can be reduced by up to 70% through intelligent management of variants. Therefore, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has established three preferred sizes for efficient variable-frequency drives in materials handling and conveyor applications. These cover the typical functional and performance requirements in postal hubs, intralogistics applications, and baggage handling systems. The standardized drive systems greatly simplify purchasing, engineering, commissioning, and spare parts stocking. Moreover, they are particularly easy to install, operate, and maintain. Limiting the number of variants can yield greater total cost of ownership (TCO) savings than any other measure except for lowering energy consumption. Therefore, drive manufacturers should be able to provide viable drive system standardizations for specific industrial segments. Preferred variants will also benefit customers by simplifying the procurement process, from the first drive purchase to any orders that may follow. Fewer variants also make inventory management much easier. Furthermore, they make planning and engineering processes less complex for everyone – the drive supplier, the OEM, and the end user. The challenge is to select as few drive configurations as possible in such a way that they adequately fulfill the varied tasks without being oversized. Drive engineers therefore need to thoroughly analyze sector-specific patterns of drive operation and application-specific needs. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has been designing efficient drive technology for intralogistics and airports for many years. Based on this wealth of experience, the German manufacturer has developed the LogiDrive line of three preferred drive variants optimized for these applications. LogiDrive systems ensure leaner purchasing, engineering, system maintenance, and staff training processes. Only very few spare parts must be kept in stock. As a result, the TCO in postal hubs, warehouses, and baggage handling systems can be reduced by up to 70%.

The LogiDrive line is the solution for conveyor systems spanning many hundred meters. The variable-frequency drives (VFDs) allow for simple daisy-chaining; Illustration 2: short power lines Setup and service switches are easily can be connected from one drive to accessible on the field distribution system the next. NORD has tailored this line to intralogistics and airport technology. Three geared motor variants meet all typical performance requirements. IE4 permanent-magnet synchronous motors with power ratings of 1.1 kW, 1.5 kW, or 2.2 kW are combined with efficient two-stage helical-bevel gearboxes in two sizes for torques up to 260 Nm. Robust frequency inverters from the NORDAC LINK series enable a wide range of speeds. The systems feature a high overload capacity and offer a uniquely versatile range of functions. Interfaces for all commercially available communication protocols are available, including PROFINET, Ethernet POWERLINK, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP

Extremely user-friendly and efficient LogiDrive systems are easy, quick, and safe to install thanks to coded plug-in connectors. Maintenance switches, key switches, and direction switches on the devices allow for flexible direct access to individual drive axes for setup or service. Sensors and actuators can be connected via M12 plugs. Sensor data collected by the inverters can be passed on to higher-level systems, which reduces otherwise necessary wiring. Plug & play, pre-parameterized inverters also simplify maintenance. Drive components can be easily replaced. Instead of swapping out entire drive units, for instance, only the geared motor can be exchanged.

systems with frequent partial-load operation. By consuming significantly less energy, they pay for themselves in a very short time.

Integrated safety LogiDrive systems efficiently and safely power horizontal, inclined, and vertical conveyors. A load monitor protects the driven equipment by stopping the motor in case of blocked applications. NORD can even implement the STO and SS1 safety functions according to EN 61800-5-2 for every single drive axis by means of TÜVcertified electronic modules. Employing field-oriented vector control, the inverters achieve high-precision control. In hoist applications, for example, they provide full torque from zero speed and reliably deliver set speeds even under load fluctuations. Standard inverter features furthermore include connection
