New Plug and Play, High Specification MF/UF Pilot Plant For Liquid Separation Trials Axium Process’ new innovative and versatile membrane filtration pilot plant, together with its team of specialist engineers, are helping manufacturers develop and optimise their separation processes utilising Microfiltration (MF) and Ultrafiltration (UF) technologies. Pilot plant separation studies help to determine process feasibility, plant design and economics at an early stage and can give an accurate model of what a full-scale commercial plant could achieve.

Axium’s new mobile pilot plant has been designed to be ‘plug and play’ and can easily integrate into an existing production plant minimising the set up time for companies wishing to conduct trials at their own site. The plant, which can be equipped with multiple interchangeable full-scale membrane modules including tubular, spiral, ceramic or hollow-fibre options, uses sophisticated data collection software and digital IO-Link instrumentation enabling an accurate and detailed representation of the physical separation/concentration level achievable from the feed taken from a representative process stream. Oil-to-water bearing conversion complete for Jaldhaka stage-1 turbines The Jaldhaka Stage-1 Hydropower Station operated by the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company (WBSEDCL) is back online following the successful completion of a project to convert its oil lubricated turbine guide bearing to Thordon’s water lubricated SXL bearing solution. Thordon Bearings’ Global Service & Support division completed the bearing conversion of the 10MW Francis turbine in June 2018 together with Andritz Hydro, after the existing white metal bearing was damaged due to water ingress from a faulty shaft seal. Through its regional distributor in India, Soneji Engineering, Thordon supplied a complete guide bearing package for the turbine’s 355mm (14in) diameter shaft. The scope of supply included an SXL guide bearing with tapered key set in a split stainlesssteel housing, a SXL segmented radial shaft seal with split housing, a Thordon Water Quality Package (WQP) to deliver clean lubricating water to the bearing, and a comprehensive instrumentation package for monitoring bearing condition. Adelphi Group win their second Environmental Award of 2018 The Adelphi Group of Companies are delighted to have won the Sustainable Manufacturer category at this year’s Made in the South East Awards. Adelphi are manufacture process and packaging machinery and equipment, including machinery for filling and capping, and work most closely with the food and beverage, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The winning entry outlined Adelphi’s eco-friendly production facility, The Friary. Exemplifying Adelphi’s core values, The Friary took into account energy efficiency at every stage of the build, and as a result had eco-friendly LED lighting installed, thermal testing conducted, high quality insulation introduced, and 256 solar panels mounted on the roof of the warehouse, which produce more power than is used. The facility was also constructed to harvest rainwater

for use in cleaning and plumbing. Whilst work was underway on The Friary, an artesian well was uncovered, which was excavated, re-lined and recommissioned. This, along with the harvested rainwater, now serves all the buildings on Adelphi’s site with water for cleaning and machine testing. Wherever difficult choices were presented, Adelphi avoided taking the cheapest option, to deliver a facility to be proud of in every regard. Thermal Imaging Camera Applications in Business Focused Maintenance Today the modern built environment faces many challenges with organisations expecting the reliability of services to continuously improve with cost savings being made due to reducing maintenance regimes. Down-time can be extremely costly to a business in lost income, therefore mission critical services must not be disrupted by failure. Historically businesses have used generic planned preventative maintenance schedules, maintaining plant in the same way regardless of its level of use and value to the business. Identifying that there was clearly a smarter risk-based approach to maintenance BSRIA published its Business Focused Maintenance (BFM) methodology back in 2004, this was updated in 2016 with the BFM Guide (BG53/2016) which is available from the BSRIA bookshop. BFM plant maintenance requirements will require instrumentational monitoring and one of the most widely used monitoring methods is thermal imaging. This has many applications including showing faults in thermal insulation, electrical installations and mechanical plant. BV DAIRY – THE LATEST AUTOMATION Established in 1958 and home to the award-winning Dorset Clotted Cream, BV Dairy is one of the most highly respected suppliers of specialist dairy products in the South West of England. In 2016, after being awarded a long-term contract to supply cultured milk drinks and drinking yogurts, they made a multimillion-pound investment in a new bottling line.  Initially capacity was four million units a year, however, with a

view to the future, BV Dairy commissioned equipment that would allow production of sixteen million units per annum. As demand on the new line increased the step to automate was reached and BV Dairy consulted UPM Conveyors to design a system to transfer bottles through each process stage from the filling in a  high care area to capping ; metal detection ;

labelling and finally to pack flow wrapping and palletising for which UPM used 3D solid modelling design software for creating a 3D digital protype using the design visualisation and simulation of product to ensure efficient product flow through the high care area and to packing. UPM liaised with all the main equipment suppliers to integrate the conveyors which involved testing the system at UPM prior to installation as it was necessary to affect the side transfer of product from each section of the system to ensure the elimination of any potential jamming and product damage. Mark Jeanes, Engineering Project Controller at BV Dairy, expressed his total satisfaction with UPM for their cooperation in managing the project with a minimum effect on production and UPM Conveyors have been awarded the order for phase two of the project.

TIJ GETS SERIOUS ON FLEXIBLES By Richard Pether, Director, Rotech Machines

the entrance of another option: TIJ. And this cost-effective cartridge-based technology is now emerging as a serious rival to TT on many flexible packaging applications. Here’s why:

TIJ (thermal inkjet) is challenging TT (thermal transfer) as the coding technology of choice for web-based materials, says Richard Pether, Director at coding specialist Rotech Machines. When the first TTO (thermal transfer overprinting) system hit the market in 1992, it was heralded as a breakthrough in flexible film coding. It quickly replaced hot foil coding as the dominant coding technology for web-based materials, as it eliminates the margin for operator error, produces crisp codes, uses less ribbon, prints continuously and – because it is digital rather than analogue – enables real time coding. All of these benefits still hold true today, only the coding landscape has changed with


A major ongoing cost of TT is the ribbon; when operations are printing expiry dates or batch codes, only a fraction of the available print area is utilised, making TT uneconomical from a ribbon consumption perspective. TIJ does not require ribbons and costly print head purchases as the print heads are built into the cartridge, significantly reducing cost of ownership on simple coding jobs. TIJ is faster – there is virtually no limitation on the speed at which it can operate, whereas speed can be a limiting factor for TT, which tends to run at a maximum speed of around 60 metres/min. The TIJ units themselves are lighter and more compact than TT machines, so they are easier to mount onto a flow-wrapper or bagger and occupy less line space than a TT printer. Then there is the issue of maintenance; TT printers have a lot of moving parts such as springs and pulleys that require maintenance. By contrast,

TIJ printers are maintenance-free with no replacement parts other than the inkjet cartridge. All of these benefits combined result in a much lower cost of ownership for TIJ versus TT. Backers of TT will argue that it produces darker, shaper codes than TIJ. Some years ago, TIJ inks weren’t completely black, but they are now and, what is more, ink consumption can be optimised on a TIJ printer by adjusting the print resolution. Thermal transfer has long been accepted as the technology of choice for coding webbased materials, in fact, TIJ offers a faster, lower cost, maintenance-free alternative for simple coding jobs. There may be exceptions - where complex codes are required or where companies are looking to overprint large amounts of information - but in the majority of applications, the justification for using TIJ is too compelling to ignore. In the next few years, we expect to see a discernible shift in this direction and TIJ printers to become a familiar sight on flow-wrappers and baggers.

Caps on bottles need to be applied quickly, accurately and in a repeatable manner with feedback if there are any problems. As well as fully automating the process, the PR02 offers traceability by continious monitoring in real time, every capped unit so that it can be traced. A quality check can be continuously applied, knowing all process parameters on time, makes it possible to check whether the cap is applied correctly or not. On-the-fly process optimisation is achieved by altering specific parameters, such as torque , force, speed, position etc. Maintenance can be achieved through continuous monitoring of temperature- and current- conditions allowing prediction of oncoming failure or manitenance needs. After picking the cap, a typical capping process involves moving the cap towards the bottle in linear position mode and then switching on-the-fly to a Constant force mode to place the cap on the bottle. The rotary motion can then turn to find the start of the thread while applying a constant linear force. Once found, the cap is rotated to a predefined closing angle with an optional torque check. Using the PR02 eliminates the need for compensation springs and couplings and torque clutches.

OEM Manufactured Drive Couplings The Only Safe And Reliable Solution We live in a world where it has never been easier to search for, find and purchase items on line. However, along with the benefits which on-line purchasing brings can come some hidden dangers, including the risk of inadvertently purchasing counterfeit products. Whilst these items may on the face of it look the same, it is highly likely that they have been manufactured from inferior materials and to a much lower standard of quality. These counterfeit items are becoming increasingly present in all areas of our lives, from mobile phone chargers right up to and including safety critical engineered components. In this article, Reich Drive Systems UK’s David Proud highlights the potential dangers associated with the use of parts that are not guaranteed to be OEM original components. We have probably all seen the news items and documentaries highlighting the problems associated with counterfeit or fake goods. The increasing significance of this problem can be measured in part by a guidance warning issued by the UK government in 2018 of the dangers that the growing number of fake automotive parts, including airbags, can pose to drivers, passengers and road users. It is now clear that counterfeit parts are being found not only in consumer related products but in an increasingly wide range of highly engineered components, even certain safety critical aircraft parts have been identified as fake in recent times. At first glance, many of these parts will look just like the real thing, with close attention being paid to the branding and packaging, however this illusion is only skin deep. A closer look by a trained eye will usually spot subtle differences in appearance which may start to raise concerns, but in the majority of cases these fake parts will be taken at face value and assumed to be authentic. This is where the shortcomings of these parts begin to emerge.

consideration will be given to the materials being used, tolerances, torsional calculations or testing. In addition, the detail behind the make up or recipe for the OEM produced elastomers is always valuable intellectual property that the counterfeit product manufacturers will never be able to replicate. Once these fake parts become part of the drive train, the only certainty is that they are likely to fail prematurely, however the failure method could be for any number of reasons, as the part has not been designed to be fit for purpose. When in use, there is little chance that the standard protection that an original drive coupling provides to the drive train will be replicated by the counterfeit part. This could result, not only in catastrophic failure of the coupling, but subsequent damage to other elements in the drive train, which may even have safety implications.

Drive couplings by their very nature vary greatly in their design and capabilities, so for any given application engineers must ensure that they specify the drive coupling correctly to ensure reliable efficient, and in the more challenging applications, safe operation. This in itself requires detailed consideration on the part of the engineer or designer, however if a counterfeit part is then inadvertently sourced, all of this time and effort is wasted, perhaps with serious consequences.

Additional concerns associated with the use of counterfeit parts include the fact that there will be no service support or warranty provided, and if damage occurs to other elements of the drive train, any warranties on those items may become void as a result of the use of a fake OEM part. Whilst no one would actually seek out a counterfeit part, it is essential that care is taken to ensure that new or replacement parts are original equipment, and the best way to do this is to deal directly with the manufacturer or their authorised representative. Not only will you have the reassurance that the part is genuine, you will have access to decades of expertise to assist in coupling selection along with the guarantee that the part will meet or exceed the application requirements.

Beyond clean – SEEPEX’s latest PC pump meets superior hygiene standards In response to demands for equipment that adheres to strict safety and hygiene requirements without compromising product quality, SEEPEX has developed a new hygienic progressive cavity (PC) pump range. The BCFH range is the first to be certified by the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group under its new testing regime.


ounded by Unilever 30 years ago, the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG) is a global consortium whose aim is to ensure the hygienic design of process equipment. It publishes guideline documents and sets best practice, as well as certifying equipment that meets the very highest hygiene standards. It provides a globally recognised test method for establishing the cleanability of closed hygienic equipment, using a specified cleaning and testing regime. EHEDG certification guarantees residue-free cleaning at a lower temperature, with lower chemical concentration and with a shorter cleaning time than is normal for other cleaning-inplace (CIP) solutions. As well as giving end-users peace of mind that their closed equipment is microbiologically clean, equipment designed to this standard typically require 76% less cleaning time, saving on water, detergent and energy. High cost of poor hygiene Product safety is a key concern for manufacturers across a variety of industries, including pharmaceutical, chemical and food & drink. Contamination by micro-organisms such as bacteria, moulds and yeasts is an ever-present risk, meaning that effective hygiene and cleaning regimes are essential to prevent the build-up of microbes in the processing environment, particularly in enclosed systems. At the same time, it is also essential that adherence to safety and hygiene does not adversely affect the quality of a product. The challenge, therefore, is designing cleaning regimes and equipment that provide the best possible hygienic solutions to ensure product safety without comprising on quality. This is exactly what SEEPEX has designed the BCFH progressive cavity pump range to achieve. Meeting tough standards Recent changes to the EHEDG certification process have made the test even more rigorous, as well as more transparent. Certification is now only valid for five


years, and results are also reviewed by independent EHEDG inspectors, in addition to those that carry out the original tests. SEEPEX is the first company to gain EHEDG certification for newly developed, hygienic, progressive cavity pumps under this revised testing process. The new testing procedures will now be a requirement for all EHEDG-certified companies by 2020, ensuring that certification continues to provide endusers with complete confidence and peace of mind that the closed equipment they are using meets the highest possible level of hygienic design.

Alternatives such as rotary lobe or twin-screw pumps create shear, which affects consistency. Additives are then needed to compensate for this shear to ensure that sensitive products regain their original consistency. Manufacturers using low shear PC pumps do not need to pay out for such additives. The ultra-hygienic BCFH pump range has a low shear action, making it ideal for sensitive foodstuffs such as yogurt.

Ensuring brand reputation As an established supplier of hygienic PC pumps for a wide range of applications involving product transfer with high-care requirements, SEEPEX understands that processors must be able to rely on the hygienic qualities of their equipment to produce safe, high quality products. New-look Maintec event hailed a success by industry Delivered under the theme, ‘The future of maintenance and reliability’, the 43rd edition of the show kicked off under, as Jos Diamond, Event Manager describes, “a new direction” with organisers moving to a new date line of November and reducing the show down to two more impactful days. The new direction paid off and organisers received glowing feedback from both exhibitors and visitors with over 50% of the industry’s leading manufacturers and suppliers already confirming their attendance to Maintec 2019. High Sensitivity Gas Leak Visualisation FLIR Systems GFx320 Optical Gas Imaging (OGI) camera offers quick, non-contact measurement of gas leaks in real time. Using its unique High Sensitivity Mode the camera is able to set a new superior standard for gas leak detection performance. High Sensitivity Mode is based upon an image subtraction video processing technique that effectively enhances the thermal sensitivity of the camera. The HSM feature subtracts a percentage of individual pixel signals from frames in the video stream from the subsequent frames, thus enhancing the differences between frames, which make leaks stand out more clearly in the resulting images. With the EPOS4 series, maxon is offering a reliable and extremely versatile platform of high-performance motion controllers. ScottishPower Renewables is committed to inspiring the future generation of engineers and scientists to work in the offshore wind industry and these workshops form part of its East Anglia ONE Skills Strategy. The developer has commenced onshore pre-construction work for its East Anglia ONE offshore windfarm. This 102 turbine windfarm, approximately 30 miles off the coast of Suffolk, is planned to meet the electricity demands of up to the equivalent of 500,000 homes* and should be fully operational during 2020.

Mad Science, which provides hands-on, educational experiences for children, visited twelve primary and secondary schools across the East Anglia region, giving assemblies and workshops packed with ‘windy’ science experiments, such as testing the optimum number of blades and blade angles on a turbine. Why cable management matters Engineers understand the value of good cable management; a single failure in an electrical, data or signalling cable can lead to failure of the device or of an entire system. CAPM347 high speed 24VDC embedded printer for retail, vending and kiosk applications

BVM, official distributor for Seiko Instruments’ printer mechanisms and portable printers for the UK and Ireland, has announced the CAPM347, a 24VDC high-speed rugged thermal print and cut unit optimised for use in ticketing and vending machines, receipt printing, lottery terminals, ATMs or other industrial, retail or medical applications. Two versions are available: for Pointof-Sale receipt printers and similar uses, the “Easy Load” version with a removable thermal head that enables simple drop-in roll replacement. The “Auto Load” model has a hinged thermal head assembly for embedded designs such as kiosk and ticketing machines and an optical sensor that automatically initiates replacement paper loading. Both versions offer print speeds of 300mm/s on standard 58, 60, 80 and 83mm wide paper up to 90 micron thickness; the thick paper model prints


at 280mm/s on paper up to 150 micron thick. The integral cutter has a hardened V-shaped blade specified to two million operations of either complete or partial cuts that leave a small centre point attached between receipts. MULTICAR – THE VERSATILE MONORAIL Multicar is a versatile monorail system manufactured in Germany by Telelift GmbH and supplied, installed and maintained in the UK by Quirepace Ltd. A Multicar installation consists of a network of track, which can be linked by switches (points) enabling complex layouts to be configured. Trolleys operate autonomously on the track network carrying diverse payloads from and to wherever they are required. What makes Multicar unique as a monorail system is the ability to travel both horizontally and vertically (and any gradient in between). When travelling horizontally, trolleys are driven by friction engagement ensuring a safe system that avoids trapping and crushing hazards, and when travelling vertically a rack and pinion system is engaged. Multicar trolleys have a load mounting point on to which various configurations of load handling device can be mounted. As the trolley travels along the track, the orientation of the payload is maintained either by gravity or by dynamic positioning. The maximum payload, including the load handling device is typically around 45kg. The trolleys are provided with both power and I/O to interface with active load handling equipment mounted on the trolley. A Multicar track network can have as many active trolleys as are required to meet the demand throughput. Each transaction may be initiated either through an HMI or via interconnection to SCADA and WMS systems. A central visualization controller provides an interface for management interrogation and control. In the past, Multicar has only been available with a single control architecture allowing construction of large networks suitable for installation across all manufacturing facilities. The latest development (Multicar-P) provides a stripped down configuration replacing powerful, touch-screen equipped controllers and HMI with a simpler control module and pushbutton transaction initiation. Designed for straightforward point to point applications, or transport between small


numbers of stations, Multicar-P makes the equipment accessible for simpler projects with smaller investment budgets. Multicar-P delivers the same flexibility as the full system, with trolleys able to transport payloads between floors, or up and over other production facilities, and the basic control system can be upgraded and extended at any time should circumstances require.

Gas Meter Test Rig Solutions for Everyone When a client approached Chell Instruments with a specific challenge, our engineering team got straight to work. Using our industry-leading expertise and experience, the ideal solution was developed to satisfy their gas meter calibration requirements. Now, a version of the Gas Meter Test Rig (GMTR) we created is available from Chell for everyone wishing to test and calibrate domestic gas meters, including manufacturers and calibration houses. The GMTR is a multi-channel benchtop system that allows testing of the functionality, accuracy, stability and leak integrity of up to four domestic gas meters simultaneously. It is compatible with older ‘diaphragm’ type positive displacement meters, as well as the newer ‘smart’ ultrasonic meters. As you’d expect, the device contains high accuracy flow, pressure and temperature instrumentation and can generate any flow set-point up to 12,000 litres per hour while maintaining a safely low outlet pressure to prevent damage to the gas meters under test. For valid error comparisons, the combined mass


flow, pressure and temperature measurements can be used to calculate the true volumetric flow rate at each flowrate. The system consists of a custom enclosure and a triple-range flow manifold with pneumatically operated isolation valves. Pipework and custom gas meter outlet blocks allow volumetric flow conversion for up to 4 gas meters in series. The system has a mass flow error of 0.4%Rdg +0.2%FS and also contains 4 pressure transducers and 4 PRT temperature probes, all connected to custom fixtures in the interconnecting pipework. The on-board display modules provide mass flow control and display, pressure and temperature measurement display and valve control. Remote monitoring and control is also possible via the builtin webserver or with the user’s own

SMT production line detects PCBs using RFID: Error rate is reduced and documentation is simplified by HARTING’s auto-ID solution An RFID system in which PCBs communicate with their SMT production line and contain all the relevant manufacturing data has been developed by HARTING. Based on the company’s RFID-4-SMT auto-ID solution, the new system cuts error rates, radically simplifies documentation requirements and forms the basis for automated PCB production in a batch size of 1. When the PCB is first produced, a small UHF RFID chip is inserted in the blank or attached as a component later on. From this point, manufacturing data can be written to and read from the RFID chip at each station in the manufacturing process. Even unplanned events such as machine malfunctions can be stored. This is all enabled by the cutting-edge UHF RFID technology from HARTING. Thanks to the coaxial-cable-based HaVIS LOCFIELD® antenna and the HaVIS RF-R350 flexible UHF RFID reader based on HARTING’s MICA® industrial computing platform, realisation involves a minimum of effort. The antenna field follows a coaxial conductor and allows communication with several PCBs in a single PCB panel at full manufacturing speed. The reader and antenna can easily be integrated into both new and old systems. The compact design and IP67 protection class also facilitate upgrading. UHF RFID read-write device, the data can be pre-processed in the reader. The data is stored in line with ISO standards and the GS1 standards applied to commercial goods transport. This applies not only for the ID of the PCB itself, but also for the processing and manufacturing data stored in the user memory of the RFID chip. This data is all transparent and can thus easily be used later by a third party.

Using the ID characteristics of the PCB throughout the production lifecycle Once the UHF RFID technology has been fitted on the PCB, it can be used throughout the lifetime of the PCB. It is possible for several PCBs to be read in bulk without optical contact: for example, through foil and cardboard packaging, which makes the technology eminently suitable for warehouse and logistics processes. In addition, the information can also be read when the PCB is already installed in the application. Provided that the housing does not consist entirely of metal and certain basic physical principles are adhered to, the information on the RFID chip can continue to be used and updated. The options offered by the UHF RFID technology remain available until the PCB is disposed of, and can enable and improve a range of different applications.

Intelliconnect Custom-Designed Flexible Cables designed into the VESTA-1 Nanosatellite Intelliconnect (Europe) Ltd, the UK based specialist manufacturer of RF and cryogenic connectors and cable assemblies have had a number of custom-designed, flexible cables successfully launched into space as part of VESTA-1, a 3U nanosatellite technology demonstration mission. VESTA-1 was manufactured for Honeywell under funding from the UK Space Agency. Intelliconnect’s customer, Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL), launched the satellite into a “575km sun-synchronous orbit as part of Spaceflight’s SSO-A SmallSat Express Mission”. It was launched from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on board the Falcon 9 on December 12th, 2018. The purpose of the mission is to test a two-way VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) payload. This VDES has been developed by Honeywell Aerospace UK and aims to increase connectivity into remote maritime locations beyond phone networks as well as broader remote communication systems.  The brief provided by SSTL required Intelliconnect to manufacture a number of specific cables suitable for use in outer-space. Intelliconnect’s design team worked closely with SSTL engineers to define their design and manufacturing and to provide flexible cables suitable for the environmental conditions found in space. “Our design team used all of their technical skills and experience to propose suitable materials and manufacturing processes for this application” Comments Roy Phillips, Managing Director of Intelliconnect.” Our outstanding on-time delivery record ensured we could meet a time-critical delivery schedule that adhered to the testing and launch needs of the satellite.”

New methods of free explosion pressure relief Explosion Venting with and without TARGO-VENT

Intelligent explosion safety does not necessarily have to be expensive or complicated. An innovative technology makes it possible to divert the shock wave and flames of an explosion in a controlled manner. The result being that the required safety area is reduced, and spaces that are freely available are increased. People and machines are protected in the best possible way. In contrast to their consequences, explosions are only discernible to a limited extent by sight alone. They happen within a few milliseconds, yet leave behind considerable damage. Different approaches of explosion safety are implemented to limit this damage. Explosion vents are often used in facilities where relief of the explosion in the surrounding area is possible. Explosion vents are relief fittings, which are extremely economical and relatively easy to manage. However, this type of traditional explosion pressure relief presents a big problem for many facility operators – extensive safety areas have to be set up around the relief area to protect people and machines. These areas cannot be used. TARGO-VENT is an opening angle limiter developed especially for explosion vents, which guides the pressure relief specifically into areas, in which there is no danger for the adjoining infrastructure. It dynamically and progressively cushions the explosion vent situated beneath it, and can therefore also


assimilate large kinetic forces resiliently. The damper absorbs the enormous repulsive forces of the explosion energy and guides the flames and shock wave in the desired direction. Depending on what is required the flames and shock wave are diverted at a defined angle of approx. 30° to approx. 45° upwards or to the side. Facility operators can therefore minimise the safety areas around the vent opening. The utilisable area is increased. A further advantage of TARGO-VENT: the top module is made in all the usual explosion vent sizes, so that retrofitting in existing units can be undertaken without a problem. Conversions or new buildings are protected by TARGO-VENT without the explosion safety concept of the existing facility having to be significantly altered. TARGO-VENT is assembled on the explosion vent in a spacesaving manner. There is no need for expensive baseplates or reinforcements. The system is made

from maintenance-free stainless steel materials and, in combination with REMBE explosion vents, is typetested in accordance with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (ATEX 114) and authorised in accordance with (FSA 13 ATEX 1637). TARGO-VENT in action A chipboard facility in Venezuela is already convinced of the advantages of TARGO-VENT. A new warehouse was built there several years ago. Due to a lack of space buildings had to be erected directly next to an existing filter unit with an integrated explosion vent. The safety areas for the explosion pressure relief of the filter were therefore no longer available. With no practicable alternatives the owner decided to attach deflector plates, knowing full well that this was not a satisfactory solution. In Autumn 2013 the operator became aware of the TARGO-VENT system. Enthused by this new solution he found various applications within his plant. In addition to protection of the new warehouse some in-house traffic routes could also be better safeguarded.

Polytrace offers a range of AODD pump controllers for both speed and batch control. Two speed controllers, one with 4 adjustable preset speeds and the other set via a 4 to 20 ma dc signal means a complete control offering. The control function is applied via the solenoid valve in the air supply of the pump.When the valve is energized one side of the pump receives air hence when it is unenergized , the other side of the pumps receives air. A cycle is then defined as the emptying from both chambers of th3 pump once

MODEL B2 This is a “Batching” controller for 12 volt DC solenoid-operated AODD pumps. It is designed to deliver a preset number of pump cycles at a preset speed for a preset number of times with a preset time interval between them. This can be anything from one batch to an infinite number of batches. It takes seconds to set the controller up and it can be run from its panel or remotely. Everything needed is displayed on its screen and the unit can store up to three distinct batch profiles for callup.

MODEL 420 The MODEL 420 is a proportional speed controller for 12 volt DC solenoidoperated AODD pumps. It translates a 4 to 20 milliamp signal into a pump speed. It can operate from stop to 499 strokes per minute and use 4 milliamps or higher as either its low or high speed and 20 milliamps as the other speed and it interpolates all speeds in between. The controller has a toggle switch to run the unit in either the 4-20 ma mode or “Jog” mode which runs the pump without speed variation for priming etc. The controller can be operated from its panel or remotely via dry contacts. The display keeps you informed about the milliamp signal value and the pumps current speed.

MODEL SP The MODEL SP is a straightforward speed controller for 12 volt DC solenoid-operated AODD pumps. It has four presets which permit the storage of four speeds. Three of the presets are called up by selecting them from the panel and the fourth is activated via remote dry contacts. The MODEL SP speed can be set from 0.1 seconds per pump stroke to 3600 seconds per stroke. The unit records the stroke count for the current run as well as a lifetime stroke count for preventative maintenance etc. |75

3D NAND is well on its way to becoming the main player in the flash memory market as this next-generation NAND promises greater capacities and performance. But only recently has it been made available in a fully industrial-grade package which is designed to tackle the tough conditions seen in many embedded environments and handle the challenges of edge computing. Traditionally, complex equipment has been used for control valve testing, but use of these complicated devices has meant extensive training for users, as well as removal of the control valve under test, and potentially one or two hours of bench testing. However, the Fluke 710 offers built-in test procedures and a highly intuitive interface including valve status indicators.

Measurements and other test results are recorded and stored in the Fluke 710’s memory, where they can be uploaded to the Fluke ValveTrack™ analysis software, which is included with the tester. This enables technicians to plot logged valve tests taken in the field, as well as the ability to compare previous uploaded tests to recent tests.

Importantly, the device provides quick checks of control valves while they are in place in a system. It sources the 4-20mA current loop signal and causes the smart control valve to move, while simultaneously interrogating the HART communication protocol data to collect critical diagnostic information about the valve’s position and status. SICK Launches its Safe EFI-pro System for Network Integration With the launch of its Safe EFI-pro System, SICK has delivered standard industrial Ethernet-based safety network integration for highly-adaptive and dynamic safeguarding in automated production and logistics environments to SIL 3/PLe. The SICK Safe EFI-pro System is a single-source solution that provides the foundation for simpler, more productive and responsive machinery safety, particularly valuable for dynamic applications like autonomous vehicles and human/robot collaboration. It comprises the SICK microScan3 EFIPro safety laser scanner and the SICK Flexi Soft safety controller with EFI-Pro gateway. “Safe EFI-pro is SICK’s safety network for industrial automation, based on the CIP Safety protocol,” explains Dr Martin Kidman SICK’s UK Safety Specialist. “The next step in the development of SICK’s successful EFI interface, the system offers the prospect of more productive and flexible safety solutions founded on rapid, high capacity transmission of both “safe” and “non-safe” data across all levels of communication.” The innovative SICK Flexi Soft EFI-pro Gateway facilitates simple and safe system integration via EtherNet/IPTM CIP SafetyTM and EFI-pro, allowing connection to SICK EFI-Pro devices like the microScan3 as well as third party CIPSafetyTM devices like robot controllers from leading manufacturers, remote I/O modules and safety PLC’s. Connected to SICK’s Flexi Soft modular controller, the system provides scalability, facilitating the integration of encoders for Safe Motion Control, devices with analogue outputs, hardwired I/O as well as additional gateways for non-safe communication to any other network such as PROFINET or ETHERCAT, for example. The SICK microScan3 EFI-pro safety laser scanner enables simultaneous field evaluation with the possibility of monitoring up to eight protective fields at the same time on one device. The user can also configure up to 128 monitoring cases per scanner. Powered by SICK’s robust safeHDDMTM scanning technology, the microScan3 EFI-pro minimises machine downtime, even in


challenging industrial conditions such as welding, reflections, high ambient light, dirt and dust. With SICK’s new license-free engineering tool, Safety Designer, configuration of the Safe EFI-pro system is facilitated with an intuitive ‘drag and drop’ user interface. System-wide access to all networked components ensures commissioning is easy, and extensive diagnostic options are available to optimise processes, e.g. for analysis of machine downtime. The SICK Safe EFI-pro system offers an open and powerful system to enable safe human and robot collaboration with minimal effort. Especially where speed and distance are issues, it offers intelligent and responsive safeguarding for situation-dependent robot protection. Integration of robot controls into the safety system is straightforward via EtherNet/IPTM CIP SafetyTM. With Safe EFI-Pro, Automated Guided Vehicles and Carts can work more quickly, intelligently and safely. Highperformance simultaneous protective monitoring of multiple fields means less need for switching between monitoring cases, so dynamic protective fields can be shorter, and therefore more responsive and efficient. The safe contour detection field, which is unique to the microScan3, supports applications such as safe AGV docking and protecting workers at narrow access points as well as providing signals

for self-muting. The microScan3 can also provide accurate Ethernet-based measurement data for navigation – a “non-safe” function that saves the need for additional scanners. Data is available as part of UDP frames either on request or through continuous transmission. As well as data such as the number of beams, distance, status and reflectivity of every beam, additional data such as field interruption, application I/O, device status and configuration can all be output. “To be truly productive, autonomous and/or collaborative robots and mobile machinery all need safety that can adapt in real time. So, SICK has developed intelligent and responsive on-board sensing with simultaneous protective fields and highly accurate measurement data,” Dr Kidman continues. “To operate effectively and productively, systems also require fast, high capacity data transmission with time synchronization of multiple devices. Restructuring stereotypes in materials science Graphene Flagship encourages women in STEM According to the Breaking the Barriers report by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 99 per cent of female chemists evidence a lack of progression for women in the sector. To encourage a more diverse community in this field, the Graphene Flagship is hosting a specialist Women in Graphene career development day, held at the National Graphene Institute, Manchester on 11 and 12 February 2019. Coinciding with the International Day of Women and Girls in STEM, Women in Graphene aims to connect women working in the sector through a series of biannual meetings and the establishment of a peer-to-peer support network. As part of a two-day program, the first day seminar contains a series of talks and workshops aiming to support the career development of women working in graphene. This includes a presentation of the RSC’s Breaking the Barriers report, an examination of women’s progression in the chemical

sciences, which will be led by Laura Norton, inclusion and diversity manager at the RSC. Prof. Sarah Haigh, professor of materials characterisation at the University of Manchester, will also deliver a talk at the seminar focusing on her adventures imaging atoms. Haigh’s presentation will be followed by a keynote speech from Dr Jess Wade of Imperial College London. An established academic in materials science, and an advocate for women in STEM, Wade famously wrote over 460 Wikipedia entries in her efforts to get female scientists noticed. Wade has been involved in several projects to improve gender inclusion in science, having been recognised as one of Nature’s ten people who mattered in 2018. Wade will share her fascinating experience with the Women in Graphene participants. “Established by the Graphene Flagship, the Women in Graphene initiative aims to create a more gender diverse scientific community,” explained Dr Siân

Fogden, event organiser of Women in Graphene, Graphene Flagship event. “Held over two days, the Women in Graphene career development day will equip attendees with the inspiration, support and knowledge to pursue their career goals in the realm of materials science.” Following the first day of seminars, Springboard Consultancy will be running a career development workshop for participants on Tuesday 12 February.
