Cleanroom Pressure Cleanroom integrity depends on three parameters - pressure, temperature and humidity. Pressure is perhaps the most important for cleanroom safety. It is the differential pressure that is measured between the cleanroom and the external atmosphere and this differential pressure is often low, often below 0.5 millibar (0.2 inch water). Critical pressure measurements require accurate, reliable pressure sensors. Automate or Die! Now is a good time to be involved in manufacturing in the UK. Not only are we seeing growth but confidence throughout industry. Yet in the battle to constantly compete in globalised markets, it is essential that we address weaknesses in our industrial base as well as celebrating strengths. Growth has been partly internally driven and assisted by positive rhetoric, and increasing action, from HM government. UK manufacturers have a track record of competitively innovating for both product and process development and that they have made strides in the application of lean engineering for efficiency. However, in the battle to compete in globalised markets, it is essential that we recognise the weaknesses in our industrial base as well as the strengths. When it comes to the flaws in UK manufacturing, its poor investment in capital equipment, especially 12|
industrial automation technologies, is prominent. The UK is well behind other competing manufacturing nations in Europe and alarmingly far slower to adopt automation than developing economies such as China that has embraced it with alacrity.

Lack of ‘new blood’ signposts serious skills shortfall in global race UK must double number of under 19s studying engineering Advanced Level Apprenticeships A report by EngineeringUK which projects the UK’s capacity for industrial growth reveals that the shortfall of under 19s taking advanced engineering apprenticeships could jeopardise the UK’s ability to compete against leading economies, such as China and the US. Engineering UK 2014 highlights a decline of 12.2% to 16,280* young people under 19 taking engineering-related Advanced Level Apprenticeships – a downward trend which would damage the UK’s current and future capacity for growth if left unaddressed. The report findings and recommendations were the basis of a roundtable meeting held at No. 11 Downing Street on Monday 2 December, at which Minister for Skills and Enterprise Matthew Hancock MP discussed the imperatives of a skilled engineering talent-pipeline with leading business and industry representatives, including BAE Systems, BT Technology, National Grid, Rolls-Royce and Shell UK.

Megan Lunn, Engineering Apprentice with Reliance Precision In a room full of engineering apprentices, Megan Lunn stands out. The 21-year old from Meltham is the only female in her teaching group and one of the few female engineering apprentices. The classroom at Kirklees College is a vivid illustration of an issue Business Secretary Vince Cable said last month was an ‘enormous problem’. He was speaking after a Government report, Tomorrow’s Engineers, said that the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe, fewer than 10%. Megan is one of those now trying to help boost that number. She is committed to a career in engineering after deciding while at Honley High School that an apprenticeship was the right way into the industry for her.

She spends one day a week in College and the rest of her time at Huddersfield’s Reliance Precision Engineering which she joined in 2011 after realising she wanted to work in a scientific industry but didn’t want to spend every day learning from textbooks. Her Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering sees her receiving training on key manufacturing processes and industry essentials like health and safety as well as being an integral part of the Reliance team. Megan says that has been hugely important to her: “The best thing about an apprenticeship is that you learn skills in a real engineering company where products are made for customers around the world and not just for training purposes. It gives you real-life experience that you could never get in the classroom.” Reliance Precision, which has its headquarters in Lepton with bases around the world, is a specialist engineering company
with over 50 years’ experience. It launched its apprenticeship scheme in the 1960s and currently has 13 engineering apprentices working within the company. The Tomorrow’s Engineers report found that pressure from parents, teachers and friends was one of the main reasons why many girls chose to go into arts subjects rather than science-based subjects like engineering. “My route into an apprenticeship started at school where my teacher suggested it as a possible option and also thought that Reliance would be a good company to work with. At College I studied science subjects and then was lucky enough to be successful getting onto Reliance’s scheme backed by Kirklees College. Since then, I haven’t looked back. “My family and friends, those on my course at Kirklees College and everyone at Reliance have been hugely supportive and, for me, often being the only female has not been a problem. I would encourage any girl interested in science and engineering to go for it and would love to see more and more female engineers coming into the industry in the future. “I see myself working in engineering for the rest of my life and know that wouldn’t have been possible without the opportunity this apprenticeship has given me.” Kirklees is one of eight apprenticeship hubs which have been set-up in the Leeds City Region. Weber 4050 Applicator Bar Code Scan System The Weber 4050P Pallet Applicator is designed to label pallets on two adjacent sides without having to stop the pallet. This differentiates the system from other Pallet Applicators in the market and makes the 4050P one of the fastest systems available capable of labelling up to 420 pallets per hour.
This label will then be passed onto the tamp pad and will be read as it moves past the scanner – If the codes are readable then the process continues as normal. If incorrect the label will be applied and the Re-Print function will activate again. If there are three consecutive failures (of a number set by the customer) then the machine will stop and error messages will be sent.
However with Pallet Labelling there is sometimes the requirement to validate that the barcodes printed are able to be scanned and also that the label has been applied to the product. The 4050P Pallet Applicator is able to meet these criteria, however in cases where this is required the pallet has to be stopped to ensure that if incorrect labels are printed then they can be re-printed and applied to the product. The way in which the 4050P completes these processes is as follows: Weber position a Bar Code Scanner in the gap between Print Engine and Tamp Pad. This scanner will read the barcodes as the label passes onto the tamp pad. The Pallet is stopped in the correct position awaiting labelling. If the bar codes read correctly then the labelling process takes place as normal. If any of the bar codes are not correct then the label will be applied to the product but no signal will be sent to move the pallet to the next position or along the conveyor. Instead the scan of failure will instigate a Re-Print Function of the system whereby the last label printed will be re-printed.
Once a label has been printed and is positioned on the Tamp Pad, the “Label on Pad” sensor is activated. This shows that a label has been printed and is ready to be applied. If there is a failure in the vacuum and the label falls off the pad before application to the pallet then the sensor will send an error message to alert that there is a problem with the label whereby the operator can reset the machine and resolve any issues. The Label is applied to the product using a “Gimbal” or spring loaded Tamp Pad which means that there is contact between the Tamp Pad and Product. It is only at the point when the Tamp Pad touches the product that the Label On Pad Sensor is de activated showing that the label has been applied to the product. |23

Vaillant UK see a 20% increase in production and improved health and safety records with a KUKA robot solution Vaillant Group is one of the world’s leading heating technology manufacturers, employing over 10,000 people worldwide. For nearly 140 years,Vaillant has been setting the standards in the heating market, including pioneering the ‘combi’ boiler 35 years ago. As one of Europe’s leading heating technology manufacturers, ‘thinking ahead’ is a culture which is embraced throughout the business. And Vaillant UK, based in Belper, Derbyshire wanted an innovative way to meet increased levels of customer demand in the UK without increasing its labour costs. Solution By introducing automation to the assembly of Heat Engines and palletising of Vaillant Boilers,Vaillant UK realised improvements. A KUKA palletising robot solution would reduce the need for manual intervention in the manufacturing process and of the manufacturing track. For the Heat Engine Cell, the need to pick, place and secure rapidly was essential to Vaillant UK to keep up with the requirement of the track. The demand was a maximum cycle time of 45 seconds between assemblies. For the Palletising Cell,Vaillant UK had to manage the need to pick and gently

of products on a single pallet. The requirement was to process a minimum of 25 pallets every hour. With its powerful motors and high performance gear units, and the ability to stack multiple pallets up to great heights with ease, the KUKA KR180-2 Palletising solution was chosen for both installations to ensure shorter cycle times and greater productivity. Results By removing manual handling from both the front and back end of the manufacturing process,Vaillant were able to increase the production of its Heat Engines by more than 20% without the need for more staff.

A Full Spectrum Of Metal Analysis Techniques The need for material verification is an increasingly important issue across a range of industries like aerospace, energy, rail and general engineering, since meeting the correct specifications can be critical to product performance, even public safety. The chemical analysis of metallic materials is one such procedure and it involves determining the precise elemental constituents of a test piece, to establish that it meets the required specification, to overcheck bought-in stock, to identify unknown material or to provide evidence in a product failure investigation. The Chemical Analysis department of Keighley Labs offers an independent, bespoke service to aerospace manufacturers, the energy sector, rail industry, foundries, plating companies, galvanisers, component importers and general engineers, providing a fast turnaround and precise material verification. In addition to classic wet chemistry, it employs advanced Inductively Coupled Plasma, Atomic Absorption and Glow Discharge spectroscopy to ensure the optimum method for a particular application, as well as industry standard techniques for carbon, sulphur, oxygen and nitrogen analysis. Part of Keighley Labs’ UKAS-accredited Metallurgical Laboratory Services capability, the chemistry department’s scope of accreditation covers an extensive range of ferrous and nonferrous metallic materials, including iron, steel, stainless steel, aluminium and aluminium alloys, copper, cobalt,

lead, nickel, tin and zinc alloys. Non UKAS accreditation also covers plating solutions, air quality filters and foundry consumables. It works in tandem with the company’s in-house Mechanical Testing, Metallography, Weld Testing, Problem & Failure Investigation and Heat Treatment departments to provide an all-encompassing technical service, housed on one site. Headed by Chief Chemist, John Whitaker, and his senior colleague Graham Woodward, each with almost 40 years’ industry experience, the department combines in-depth scientific knowledge and practical expertise. Submitted specimens range in size from a minute speck of material, to a test bar or finished component of virtually any size; the team then determines the appropriate testing technique, according to material type, sample size, required turnaround time and complexity of analysis. Inductively Coupled Plasma spectroscopy is a very sensitive technique for identification and quantification of elements in a test piece. It is an ideal tool for major and trace detection of a wide range of elements in solution, in which a dissolved sample is injected into argon gas plasma, and it enables analysis down to parts per million detection limits, across a wide range of metals and alloys. The technique can also be used for measuring impurity levels in plating solutions and galvanising systems. Atomic Absorption spectroscopy is a highly sensitive analytical technique
that can measure down to parts per million. It relies on the atomic absorption process for determining the concentration of elements of interest, by measuring the amount of light absorbed, and is particularly suitable for bespoke analysis applications. When dealing with solid pieces of metal down to 15mm in diameter, the Glow Discharge spectrometer is often the instrument of choice, a typical application being the analysis of foundry discs. It enables rapid elemental determination in most ferrous materials and is an excellent technique for many routine applications. The characteristic ‘sputter’ pattern of glow discharge instrumentation ensures uniform material removal from the sample surface. The Chemical Analysis team accepts commissions from anywhere in the world, providing samples can be delivered safely, and is able to analyse virtually any metallic or metal-related material. With today’s engineers working to ever-tighter technical specifications and the quality control of manufactured and bought-in parts always high on the agenda, the department’s services are in growing demand.

Westons Cider saves £42,000 annually With reverse osmosis from spirax sarCo Westons Cider is saving around £42,000 per year in fuel and water costs following the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment unit from Spirax Sarco.

Accurate metering of fuel oil and water has pinpointed the savings, including 3,800 litres of oil saved over a 15-day period. What’s more, the savings are likely to be even higher than these measurements suggest because of reduced CO2 emissions and a lower Climate Change

The installation was quick and easy and the RO system is compact. We’re very pleased with the results and we may well consider using RO again in other applications.”
Regular boiler blowdown is needed to prevent dissolved solids from accumulating in the boiler, where they can cause problems such as foaming and scale. The RO system from Spirax Sarco treats water before it reaches the boiler feedtank and removes more than 98% of contamination to produce high-quality, low-conductivity water.
