Restaurant News

A new restaurant named Kona has launched at the London hotel the Taj 51 Buckingham Gate Suites and Residences. The 46-cover restaurant has been unveiled as part of the 86-suite hotel’s recent renovations, and offers a menu of southern European food inspired by the Cote d’Azur and the Italian Ligurian coast. Open for breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner, it features a morning “Benedict Bar”, plus a bar menu offering Champagnes and wine. Typical dishes will include lobster bisque with Dorset crab and radish, foie gras brioche with damson plum and marcona almonds, Gloucestershire old spot pork belly with spelt and rosemary crumb. There will also be a selection of vegetarian and gluten-free salads, soups and main courses, such as chickpea panisse with red pepper, yoghurt and baby aubergines, or king oyster mushroom with cauliflower couscous, apple and red chilli. The restaurant’s décor has been designed to create an elegant yet homely Victorian townhouse feel, with luxurious fabrics and modern design, plus a separate library room with a fireplace, sofas and armchairs. Kona joins the hotel’s other restaurants, such as Quilon, and Bank, as well as its Zander bar. The hotel also has an outdoor eating and drinking space, the St. James’ Courtyard. Executive chef David Tilly, who has worked for the Taj Group since 2007, said: “We are proud to launch Kona during such an exciting time for the London food scene. Our mission is to present guests with uncomplicated dishes, which allow for locally sourced ingredients to take centre stage.” Digvijay Singh, general manager at the hotel, added: “Kona is set to become a haven from the hustle and bustle of Victoria and St. James.” The hotel was renamed in January last year after the Taj group also rebranded the former Crowne Plaza London – St James property at the same time. Founded in 1901, the Taj group is now part of the Indian conglomerate Tata, and operates over 100 hotels across India and the world.

The UK’s alcohol consumption declined in 2014, continuing a downward trend since the mid 2000s. Last year the average litres of alcohol per head came to 7.76, a decline of 0.3%. The figures are based on HMRC tax returns, compiled by the British Beer & Pub Association. They also show market share by category, and report an increase in beer by 1% to 36%. Next up was wine, with a declining 33% share, followed by spirits at a steady 21%. ‘While the figures certainly bury the myth that overall UK alcohol consumption is inexorably rising, it is hugely encouraging to see such a solid performance from beer in 2014,’ said Brigid Simmonds, BBPA chief executive. ‘There is no doubt that two cuts in beer duty have had a huge impact in supporting a British-based industry and in encouraging consumers back towards our favourite, lower-strength drink.’ It’s no surprise that the BBPA had next week’s budget in mind. ‘With new investment in the beer category protecting pubs and creating jobs, it all adds to an overwhelming case for a third, historic cut in beer duty in the budget on 18 March,’ said Simmonds.

Park Inn by Radisson Hotel Newhey Carpets, a leading British manufacturer and specialist designer of innovative, high performance and sustainable commercial carpets, produced over 20,000 square metres of Graphics Tufted and Colortec+ carpet for the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre London Heathrow. Rezidor’s mid-market brand Park Inn by Radisson Hotels have invested £50 million to refurbish 21 of their UK sites. The Park Inn by Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre London Heathrow is one of Rezidor’s flagship hotels. The hotel was granted £13 million of the total investment figure to refurbish the guestrooms, corridors and public areas. The hotel which is situated only 1.6 kilometres from Heathrow Airport, wanted to introduce a stylish contemporary feel to the interior. Newhey Carpets worked closely with interior design practice Trevillion Interiors, based in Hertfordshire, to create the brand standard designs to suit both business and leisure guests. A simple but sophisticated 3 colour Graphics Tufted design was chosen for the guestrooms incorporating a different colour scheme for each of the 5 floors. The corridors mirrored the colour scheme of the guestrooms, where a Colortec+ construction was specified due to the requirement for panel and runner features throughout. The renovation featured and air-force blue and smoke grey colour scheme, which fitted perfectly with the hotels brand design. The newly refurbished hotel has 895 guestrooms and can cater for up to 700 delegates in the stylish new conference and meeting facilities, which have the largest capacity in Heathrow for residential conferences. The whole renovation project was ongoing throughout 2014 and also included carpet being supplied to Park Inn by Radisson Manchester and Telford. There are also a number of other sites that are currently at design stage. For more information please visit www.newheycarpets.co.uk

Recycled Plastic Furniture Let’s hope that this summer really does bring some sunshine! Having a pleasant and useable garden is a clear opportunity to increase your revenue. Outdoor dining or casual drinking for pubs can bring huge business opportunities, but only if businesses are prepared and equipped accordingly. Transforming your tired and used gardens is a lot easier that some publicans may think. Adding colourful and appealing planters will be inviting and ensuring seating is of good order will ensure diners are kept happy – who actually wants to dine on a half rotten picnic table that has seen better days? NBB Recycled Furniture focuses on providing eco-friendly outdoor furniture which has been manufactured from 100% recycled plastic – using premium manufacturing processes. Furniture from 100% recycled plastic is fair better than traditional wood or even metal furniture as it’s more robust to withstand the heavy demands of the commercial world. In fact NBB’s very own 100% Recycled Plastic standard picnic table can withstand over 1000kg. When you bear in mind that the world record for bench pressing is 488.47kg – you’ll struggle to find a table that’s more robust! Our range is growing all the time and we have the benefits of being able to produce bespoke products. Last year we provided outdoor furniture to a famous premiership football club, which included Poseur Tables, A Frame Tables, and Condiment Stations – all made from 100% recycled plastic. NBB Recycled Furniture also has a great range of furniture aimed at the younger ones, our Junior Picnic Table is very popular with Schools, and provides a great solution to those venues wishing to attract families. It’s not only available in Brown or Black, but also a whole host of colours including Blue, Cranberry, Green and even Multi-Coloured!

Deciding on what furniture to choose isn’t a simple process, so here are NBB’s tips to choosing the right outdoor furniture: The style of furniture you decide should

Smoking shelters When NBB was originally founded in 1990 they were one of the first companies to offer smoking control products. NBB currently have over 150 different shelters within the range – not to mention the bespoke projects they undertake. The key now is to provide imaginative and practical smoking areas for customers to enjoy. Offering a well-designed ‘retreat’ by adding all weather furniture, heating and lighting will ensure a pleasant environment. NBB’s most popular smoking shelter is the No Butts Open Fronted Smokescreen, its available in a range of sizes and colours. Prices start from as low as £1,200. Its aluminium frame is lightweight but sturdy, easy to clean and won’t rust, requiring minimal maintenance. Integrated seating is also available. NBB recommend the integration of cigarette bins, these can be wall mounted or floor standing. NBB’s best seller – the Concorde Cigarette Bin has a patented fire prevention system to extinguish cigarettes once in the bin. This unique design also incorporates a litter bin and can be bolted to the ground to prevent theft.

Hotel Football is the latest venture for Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville’s company, GG Hospitality. Located at the home of Manchester United, Old Trafford, this modern hotel gives its customers the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing stay in such a friendly and welcoming environment. It is also somewhere where people can share their experience in a place with football as its passion.

Whether it is a boardroom meeting in one of the Owners Room or a dinner for over 100 people in the Stadium Suite, Hotel Football will be able to make sure your stay is fun and exciting, like the world famous sport.

Giggs and Neville came up with the idea for Hotel Football based on their travels to several hotels throughout their football careers. Like the successful Café Football, they have put together a dedicated team of industry experts who all have brought something new to GG Hospitality.

For example, in the bar area, you will find their Memphis bar stools.

With 133 bedrooms and natural flooring, this hotel has been designed as a new and current venue using things from the world of football throughout. Guests will be able to see the hotel’s exceptional interior design with its use of space. The amazing rooftop and football pitch with its foldable roof gives the guests an experience they will never forget.

18

To help bring this venue to life, GG Hospitality enlisted the help of furniture supplier UHS Group. With their experience of working with some of the world’s leading brands and architects, UHS were able to supply Hotel Football with an extensive range of furniture.

These stools have upholstered swivel seats, which are made of leather with two different fabrics: Crest Shelly Poppy and Crest Jade Green. The bases are made of metal complete with a raw steel finish. Another piece of furniture that UHS provided for the hotel were the Sonta arm chairs and two-seater sofas. These chairs have been created with an oak stain for the frame and legs. They also have a yellow cushion placed at the front and back of the chairs with carefully stitched detail. The material used was

Kvadrat Field 432. The rest of the chair was upholstered in Grey Kvadrat canvas 124. All of the furniture used in this project has been created according to the designer’s specifications, and have been carefully handled by the UHS manufacturing team.

The Natural Food Show at Natural & Organic Products Europe – the UK’s only dedicated trade show for natural, organic, fair trade, sustainable, vegan, vegetarian, free from, and special diet food and drink, has released its first preview of some of the new products on show this year. Taking place at the new venue of ExCeL London next month, on 19-20 April, the show boasts a 10% increase in exhibition space for food and drink companies for 2015. Five weeks out from opening day, over 600 exhibitors are already confirmed. Organic sales on the increase Over 60% of this year’s New Product Showcase entries, which is on track to include over 300 products, have been entered into the food, organic food, drink, and special diet categories. Notably, given the Soil Association of a 4% rise in UK organic sales[1] to over £1.86 billion, of these four showcase categories, organic food and drink boasts the most entries of all. Key findings from the association’s latest Organic Market Report revealed that the organic catering market also had a record year, exceeding £1 million a week for the first time (increasing by 13.6% to £55.8 million). Food buyers looking to keep up-to-date with all the latest food and drink trends, and take a bigger bite out of this lucrative (and growing) market, will find a host of new ideas at the show. Clip Solution

For Bag Snatchers HOTELS, restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes across the UK are offering their customers an ingenious solution to the problem of bag theft. Venues such as The London Bridge Hotel and Sheraton Park Tower Hotel as well as chains such as Park Plaza and Intercontinental are using the Chelsea Clip (www. chelseaclip.co.uk) which can be fitted inconspicuously under tables to guard against bag snatchers. A popular bar in Manchester city centre has had no reported bag theft since customers started using the Clip. The Manchester Bierkellar, a theme bar boasting a wide range of German beers, has had a number of Chelsea Clips fitted in its dining area, which can seat more than 200 customers. The busy venue, which features 4 bar areas, regularly attracts more than 1,500 people on a Saturday night. The Clips are also being used to protect businesses in Fitzrovia, London. Keys to your Kingdom

April 2015

As guests become more tech savvy and self-sufficient in their travel habits, technology to enable seamless, faster check-in and room entry has become a necessity in a modern hotel. Four decades after its creation, the magnetic stripe card has revolutionised the way we make purchases and share personal information and of course open your hotel room door. However, Near Field Communications (NFC) technology is threatening to send the magnetic stripe the way of the VHS player. Before the familiar stripe vanishes for good, though, it's worth reflecting on the technology that IBM proudly named one of its top 100 contributions to society Hotel Locks have traditionally used the trusty magnetic strip on the card to store the relevant room details. The strip itself was open to damage from outside sources such as dust and grease. This was then easily transferred to the reader heads in the encoding equipment and the locks themselves. The resultant build-up of dirt would cause misreads and wear. NFC can transform how hoteliers welcome guests at their hotels and resorts, with the advent of NFC, the same device used to make calls and browse the web can now be used to allow guests to skip the check-in queue, allowing them to walk straight into the hotel and go directly to their room. You could even check-in on your phone before you even arrive at the hotel and then use the NFC chip in your phone as your room door key. Although this technology is still new, NFC has proven its abilitilty to enhance ways in which consumers make transactions, exchange content, connect to other devices and much more. The next generation of hotel door locking solutions such as “Opendoor” use the latest generation contactless key card systems and kiosks that encode guests Smartphone’s to gain door entry. NFC locks, which use radio frequency to encode and read the cards. The Locks read the cards without the need for any direct contact with the lock itself. This totally eliminates the need for a cleaning schedule and as there are no moving parts the locks are incredibly reliable. The lack of physical contact between the card and the door lock combined with a visual and audible notification system makes the Locks DDA friendly. Hotels are buying into this new technology because not only does it improve the guest experience, it reduces staff costs. Just like hotel keycards are rejected by door locks after the checkout date, the app on your phone deletes the NFC code for the room when you have checked out. NFC also enables you to connect apps to room management systems that know which rooms have been cleaned and are ready to use. Hotels can offer extra services through the app, like letting guests pick a specific room from what's available. Guests could also set the air conditioning temperature at the same time, along with any other room controls. Andrew Evans is the founder and Managing Director of Keystep Limited, a specialist solution provider of IT, EPoS Support Services and Electronic Lock Systems to the hospitality and leisure industries. Case Study The Royal Oak has an Opendoor!

Daniel Thwaites plc is a family controlled company, based in Blackburn, Lancashire. The company was founded in 1807 when Daniel Thwaites, an excise officer, bought a small brewery. From humble beginnings and five generations of the family, the business has gone from strength to strength and now includes Thwaites pubs (a collection of 350 tenanted pubs), Shire hotels (six award winning hotels) and Thwaites Inns of Character (nine award winning Inns).

The Challenge From the moment a guest checksThere is little more frustrating for a guest than having to return to reception to obtain a new key when they find the magnetic keycard doesmobile phone or the magnetic card just getting old and worn out. Keycard encoders at reception are vulnerable to spills, dirt and dust collecting in the mechanism, and these eventually become ineffective.

The Solution

Irvin Aldridge IT Manager Daniel Thwaites plc

When The Royal Oak, one of the 9 award-winning Thwaites Inns of Character undertook a ÂŁ625k refurbishment in Keswick, they replaced their old Access The decision was made for four main reasons: It uses contactless radio frequency technology (RFID) thus eradicating the magnetic strip issues. Due to their ingenious design the new locks required no costly door alterations fitting perfectly in the space left by the old locks, leaving a clean and tidy finish. All locks come with free lifetime software upgrades (back office and lock programme), and a 3 year warranty unheard of with existing brands. Replacing a like for like system with the old supplier would have cost significantly more.

The Delivery - from site survey to fitting the locks took just 2 days. Today, a support contract covers any technical queries and implements those all important free software upgrades.

Scalable Offerings Security for guests is non-negotiable and hotels need to operate a robust and reliable access control sysallow or restrict access to different parts of the building. The information stored in the lock can be transferred to a computer to provide a precise audit trail about where and when each lock has been used including the date, time and whether access was allowed or denied, giving even greater security for your hotel and importantly, your guests. bust design, 3 years warranty as standard and flexible payment options, there is a locking solution to meet all requirements.

Replacing Existing Lock Systems with Opendoor Replacing your existing door handles and locks is a simple process. With no wires, no hassle, but maximum versatility, Opendoor provides an excellent alternative to traditional keys. If you are replacing an existing electronic door locking system (Vingcard, or any other electronic door control installation), no door alternations are needed the new Opendoor handles fit perfectly in place of the existing door furniture, leaving doors with a clean fresh look.

Converting Existing Magnetic Card Locks to RFID If you currently have traditional magnetic strip card door locks and experience regular failures, it is likely the magnetic reader has lost sensitivity because of low ingress protection. existing door furniture, by converting the lock mechanism to RIFD. Conversions provide a practical, cost effective, and simple solution that gives all the benefits of RFID technology without the overhead of replacing all the door handles in the building. Swapping out the locking mechanism is a simple process that can be done by internal maintenance staff, or by Keystep.

StableTable from Sweden Wins Columbus Trophy for Outstanding Innovation and Entrepreneurship 11th edition of the entrepreneurs’ prize awarded during Food Executive Europe in Maastricht, Netherlands For the eleventh time, the Columbus Trophy was awarded to a successful young entrepreneur, active in the hospitality industry. This time Sven and Lena Henningsson, StableTable, from Sweden were presented with the prize by the head of the jury, Robert Melaard, during the second edition of the networking event Food Executive Europe. More than sixty entrepreneurial companies from all over Europe competed for the prestigious trophy. Twelve got nominated, among them StableTable – the innovation which has finally brought an end to the problem of wobbly tables. No more folded napkins under table legs, no more adjustment screws and no more spilled drinks. Believe it or not, the ingenious table adjusts itself, thanks to a fully mechanical, patented system hidden inside the centre pillar.

34

According to the jury, the quality of the finalists was especially high this year. Melaard: “The 26 jury members assessed all nominees. “StableTable alludes to the annoyance of guests in the hospitality industry, namely wobbly tables. Beer mats or cardboards being put under the tablelegs becomes unnecessary and StableTable does its bit to have a successful lunch or dinner.” The impressive marketing activities and annual double digit growth of the company since it was founded some five years ago also contributed to the jury’s decision. Momice from the Netherlands got second and tuck-tuck from Switzerland got third place. “We constantly strive to bring new and better solutions to the hospitality industry”, says Sven Henningsson, one of the two entrepreneurs behind StableTable. “Self-stabilising tables help restaurants work in a flexible and cost efficient way, and to provide a quality experience to their guests.” For more information or to set up an interview, please contact Sven Henningsson 0208 144 9504 or +46 46 15 15 50 or e-mail info@stabletable.se
