REAL WEDDING

Julie Andre

This month we have the beautiful wedding of Julia and Andre as photographed by the amazing Jessica Higueras of Jessica Photography! Enjoy!

Here are some thought and insights about Julia and Andre’s day in their own words... HOW WE MET: We met when we were 17 at a school party. I walked up to Andre and pulled him onto the dance floor, we’ve been together since. THE PROPOSAL: The proposal happened 7 years later, after I finished Architecture school and Andre graduated from his Officer’s training. We threw a fancy dinner party at our house which was a success. After all the guests left we were dancing around the living room to Bob Marley celebrating our evening’s achievements and Andre popped the question. THE BEST PART: Julie: One of the best parts was our first dance as it was so much fun! We took swing dancing classes and we loved it, inspired a few other people to take up swing dancing too. Andre: The combination of a candle lit historic building filled with handcrafted decorations and people who love and care about us created the most amazing atmosphere. The ambient feeling this produced was undeniably our best memory of our wedding day. WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO OTHER BRIDES WHEN PLANNING THEIR WEDDING: I would recommend going with your gut instinct when making decisions. I picked alot of risky details that could have gone very wrong,

engaged

24

and sure enough everyone was worried, swayed at first by different opinions I just stuck with everything I had done in the end and it all just fell together :) COLOUR PALETTE: Yellows and browns were the main colours that carried through into all the details, and of course the burgundy groom’s suit. VENUE: We visited alot of stunning venues in and around Auckland. We were on the fence for a long time. When we walked into Hopetoun Alpha we both looked at each other and just knew that was the one. With my love of old buildings and Andre’s love of urbanism it was perfect. The solidity and authenticity of the structure with the thick fluted columns, hardwood floors and the high ornate ceiling, flooded with light, it was a vintage gem hidden in the middle of town. THE GOWN: John Zimmermman constructed my dress. He worked on every detail until he got it to a state of perfection that we were both happy with. BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES: Me and my sister sewed the bridesmaids dressed. The girls are all different heights and have different figures so we designed each dress to suit each figure, some short and others full length. GROOMS SUIT: Top man HAIR: Brad Lepper form French Revolver :) CAKE: My sister designed and made the cake. She is always up for a challenge. FLOWERS: Flowers on Onewa DECORATION: We designed all the decorations. It became our part time project. We Collected vintage jars, brass vases and photo frames for months. We ended up with about 80 frames which we used to hang all around the venue with family photos in them. INVITATIONS: We designed our own PHOTO LOCATIONS: Hopetoun Alpha and Cornwall Park HONEYMOON : Queenstown 25

FEATURE

THE BEST

VENUE YOU’VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARDOF

This month, we talk with David Green from AUT Hospitality Services about their amazing new building in which they can host beautiful wedding receptions right in the centre of Auckland city.

This gorgeous new building in the centre of the city is an amazing place for a wedding reception. For people who haven’t been here, describe the venue.

The new Sir Paul Reeves Building was officially opened by Prime Minister John Key, on the 22nd March this year. The building boasts cutting-edge design and architecture which incorporates effective use of natural light throughout. The building has many large open spaces to create flow and tranquillity.

The colours of the building have been specifically designed to reflect the externa environment, with various hues of foliage, wood, stone, and charcoal. The mix o colours, glass-roofed atrium and ‘living wall’ all blend to create the illusion of being outside, so you feel as if you are dining under the stars. The Sir Paul Reeves Building incorporates all the modern features guests expect, while creating a relaxed and comfortable environment with a choice of venues from large open spaces to self-contained function rooms. What are the services that you can offer couples for their weddings?

AUT Hospitality Services are committed to working with you to understand you vision for your most special day. Among our many services, our team can offer: • • • • • • • • • •

Wedding receptions are an important part of a wedding day. How does your team ensure that everything runs smoothly? The AUT Hospitality Services team collectively has over 120 years industry experience, including wedding planning and operations, fine dining, catering, conferences, events and awards dinners – you name it, we have done it. The team believes in professionalism and attention to detail as the key to success. Our goal is to consistently deliver world class service. AUT regularly hosts many international visitors and events and our team motto is” you are only as good as your last meal”. Meaning, all elements must be delivered over and above expectations – whether the event is an intimate wedding for 50, or a large glamorous wedding for 300 guests. To some, it might seem a little strange having your wedding reception at a university (even more so if you didn’t attend there). Why should people consider this as their wedding reception venue? At AUT, we have the ability to offer extraordinary experiences and venues. Our team can transform any room with lighting, decorations, design and theming. Each space within AUT offers unique architectural beauty and wonderful natural light. Located in the heart of the city, the Sir Paul Reeves building is easily accessible and conveniently located near a range of luxury and mid-range accommodation. Auckland’s fabulous restaurants and varied bars are nearby with Waiheke Island only is a short, 35 minute scenic ferry ride. A variety of convenient transport options will also transfer guests to and from Auckland Airport.

I see that the building itself has some amazing features that would be a great backdrop for wedding photos. What options are there for wedding photo locations? The space is very creative, and we work with some exceptional photographers who really have an eye for picking out interesting areas. Albert Park has long been a favourite spot for those special photographs on the day and this is directly opposite the Sir Paul Reeves Building. Aotea Square and Queen Street are also on our doorstep, so there are some great location opportunities for photographs, all within minimal walking distance. How many guests can you cater for? We can cater for up to 200 guests with a sit down plated dinner in the extended atrium area, including a dance floor and bar. We also have smaller rooms to create a more intimate atmosphere, which can seat up to 150 at a sit down plated dinner - this also includes a dance floor and bar. Being a university, are there limitations on the time of the year when the venue can be used for wedding receptions? During semester time students use the majority of the building spaces, so we recommend any time from mid- November until late February is the best time to book or over the Easter period. It is also possible to use one of the rooms on a weekend throughout the year if the couple prefer a winter wedding. However we welcome all enquiries from couples throughout the year, as the team knows the best times in which to book, and are always happy to help. Right, let’s get down to the important things - the food. Tell us about the style of food you offer. With over 20 years’ experience and a great team behind him, our Group

Chef and his team have cooked for many large events and visiting dignitaries. Our food is fresh, tailored to suit dietary requirements, and is prepared onsite in our state of the art kitchens. We can deliver anything from a simple buffet to the most elaborate multi-course banquet. We also have the capability to cater to weddings at external venues around Auckland with up to 200 guests. Do you have both buffet and a la carte options? We provide canapÊ options, buffet options, and plated set menu options. Would couples have a chance to come and sample some of the food prior to booking? Yes this can be accommodated with one weeks’ notice. We understand how important food can be, so are more than happy to work with the couple on this. Finally, as someone who has spent the majority of their life in the hospitality industry, what advice would you give a couple when choosing their reception venue? Venue choice is one of the biggest decisions for a couple to make, as it is so important to their day. The key features of a reception venue should be location, food, service, design, amenities and ambience. Therefore, my advice would be to carefully measure all factors and ensure your venue accommodates all your needs. The Sir Paul Reeves Building does all this and more, and is an ideal location just waiting for a couple to create magic within it. We can provide that assurance, that on the day, you can enjoy the moment with your family and friends and leave the rest to us.
