Letter from our Leadership Dear Friends, 2018 marked a significant year of growth for enCourage Kids Foundation. By expanding our reach into pediatric hospitals in 39 states and Puerto Rico, we were able to brighten hospital stays for more than one million sick children and their families. Together, with our hospital partners, your support provided muchneeded comfort, hope, education, and distraction. Much has changed in the pediatric medical landscape over the past three decades, and throughout, our commitment has not wavered to humanize healthcare for children and their families. enCourage Kids Foundation works to establish deep-rooted relationships with the Child Life Community and pediatric care facilities. This connection to our hospital partners uniquely positions us to meet the critical needs of hospitalized children. Your kindness changes lives and supports healing. And, we’ve accomplished a great deal together. More hospitals than ever rely on enCourage Kids to provide Creative Arts Therapy programs, to supply Admission and Comfort Kits, and to make technology available to the kids in their care. Through your generous support, young patients can cope with their fears, anxiety, and pain—through programs and with resources not typically provided for by hospital budgets. This past year, enCourage Kids hit a major milestone, surpassing $15.5 million in direct funding awarded to hospitals to complete more than 850 projects. Because of you, our individual, corporate, and foundation supporters and our hospital partners, we are a healing presence in more pediatric facilities across the United States than ever. You make a difference in the lives of every sick child, and, for that, we are incredibly thankful. As we turn to the future, with your support, we will continue to provide more funding and impact-driven programs that improve patient care. YALE NEW HAVEN CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL healing is in the music
Having a child should be one of the most exciting experiences of your life. You celebrate the milestones throughout each trimester and begin the preparations for the arrival of your newborn. For some families, though, their journey does not go as planned. When a newborn comes pre-term, delivery can be complicated and the infant can suffer medical setbacks or crises. The expectation of a happy occasion is quickly replaced with fear. Will my baby make it through this? Will she survive being so tiny and so fragile? Sometimes parents’ worst fears come to life. Parents of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) may simultaneously experience unimaginable grief, as well as moments of profound joy. The weeks and months postpartum are expected to be filled with joy, hope, love, and, of course, sleepless nights. The NICU is stressful, frightening, and isolating as parents adjust to their new reality and differed expectations. A new mom who expected to be discharged from the hospital holding her infant in her arms must leave her child behind in the NICU. Daily visits and long bedside sessions become the routine as parents witness their tiny baby fighting for her life, connected to tubes and monitors, often so medically fragile that touching her is limited. At Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, an Arts for Healing Program helps parents and pediatric patients combat the fear and loneliness that accompanies an extended hospital stay. To support families, enCourage Kids Foundation funds Music Therapy in the NICU. Board certified Music Therapist, Judy Engel, specializes in Neonatal Music Therapy and provides bedside sessions for parents and their newborns.
Judy is a member of the care team that also includes medical and ancillary staff such as the Child Life Specialist, Social Worker, Speech-Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Chaplain, and a Family Support Specialist. Research shows the benefits of Music Therapy in the NICU are numerous. Music improves the baby’s oxygen saturation, increasing weight gain, reducing stress after pain, stabilizing heart and respiration rates, and shortening hospital stays. As Judy plays her guitar, she watches the monitor to check the baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels as a guideline to understanding her patient’s baseline functions. Judy adjusts the volume and tempo of each song, informed by her ongoing assessment of the baby’s responses. She uses many interventions during her time in the NICU, modifying and individualizing her techniques for each patient. Initially, parents may need to work through fear and grief to embrace hope for their fragile child and Music Therapy supports parents during this healing process. Judy uses music to foster the baby’s development, model ways for parents to sing to their baby, and provide comfort. She uses Developmental Multi-modal Stimulation, which pairs lullaby-style singing with guitar accompaniment, stroking, rocking, and eye contact—helping parents bond with their newborn, allowing other people to join them in celebrating her life. enCourage Kids is proud to support the Arts for Healing Program and its vital Music Therapy work to deliver health and healing to hospitalized children and their families at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.

MOUNT SINAI KRAVIS CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL KidZone TV KidZone TV is an integral and dynamic part of the Child Life and Creative Arts Department at Kravis, which televises live in-house programming three times a day, seven days a week. It is their most accessible therapeutic tool, reaching patients and families in their hospital rooms and clinic environments, as well as inside the studio space. Through their broad offerings covering music, art, meditation, yoga, cooking, creative writing, and more, the team at Kravis ensures that all pediatric patients have access to programming they can relate to their hobbies and interests. enCourage Kids Foundation has supported KidZone TV since 2005, providing grants totaling close to $750,000 to fund programming for hospitalized children and their families.

The hospital can be a scary and unfamiliar environment for children. At Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, enCourage Kids Foundation helps to ease that anxiety and fear. Thanks to our funding the Child Life Department provides Hospital Admission and Comfort Kits to their incoming pediatric patients. Canvas bags filled with age-appropriate activities are designed to provide distraction and encourage play. In addition to entertainment, though, the kits help children maintain developmental skills and interact with family members while promoting independence as well as choice and self-expression. enCourage Kids Foundation has been supporting Hospital Admission and Comfort Kits at Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital for 13 years, granting nearly $275,000 in funding. Our shared goal with these bags is to decrease the stress and anxiety that goes hand-in-hand with pediatric hospitalization.
