ART with and without LOVE

Vol. 1, No. 3

Win dli gh t THE ART & SCIENCE OF LIGHTING in SL

Any self respecting photographer uses Windlight settings at every change in condition for the shot. As an example: you might want the shadows falling somewhere else. Maybe the sun would be more advantageous over there. How about some variations in the background? More clouds? More whispy? How about a different coloured sky? As you can see, the art of photography is not just picking out the right angle. The myriad amount of option settings available to us through the Windlight interface (World > Environment Settings > Advanced Sky) are complex, Nuclear Bomb grade technology fer sure, but if you pull a slider in just the right way.... It’s Heaven. Of course, you have to be a true geek. I have no idea what all the bells and whistles do in this interface, I hardly ever save any presets since everything will have changed by the time I revisit the exact same place. The effects that can be created at the moment are also those things which can’t be REcreated. Most, if not all my best shots are taken in the “wild”. Not only does this help the processing time if all your effects are applied inworld, PhotoShop just isn’t capable of producing such a startlingly rich, colourful, and varied palette as that of Second Life. Having features such as Dynamic Shadowing (for the Snowglobe viewer) is just so much more cake. If you haven’t tried the Snowglobe viewer, I highly recommend you do. The skin tones and gradations throughout most of the densely proportional polygons (such as the avi’s face) are so lifelike it’s scary. Vectoring the shadows as they play over the body is an alluring and sensual benefit one gains from staring through a lens all one’s life. The Windlight Settings for this most delicious feature of undulating shadows dancing over the human or landscape forms are a snap. I’ll try to illustrate by telling you how I set up the lighting for a shot. As you’ll notice from the Default settings, ironed into the Advanced Sky Editor window, the

two most important sliders in the whole bunch are: Sun/Moon Position and East Angle. Now, here’s the key to Windlight’s Shadow Settings. You have to understand how the sliders actually move the Sun in the 3D environment. The Sun/Moon Position slider moves the Sun from 0.000 (Due East Position on the horizon) to 1.000 which, surprisingly enough, is Due East too. If you’re clever enough to actually watch the Sun while you tweak the Sun/Moon Position you’ll notice it going from the East most point on the horizon to above your head (noon) then back down behind you to rest on the horizon at exactly Due West. At that very point, you’ll notice the slider is at 0.500 (or as close as your mouse can urge the slider to those mathematically precise numbers) and the Sun is 180 degrees opposite to the zero setting. Moving the slider above 0.500 sweeps the Sun beneath the sim all the way around again to 1.000 or Due East. So, to get your Sun shining as if it were rising naturally as does the big bad world, your Sun/ Moon Position settings can be 0.000 or 1.000. They’re exactly the same. It doesn’t matter whether the Sun is beneath the sim, lighting features will impact the avis and objects in the environment you are shooting. The East Angle slider moves the Sun around the horizon from start to stop. It too follows a 360 degree arc from 0.00 as the Eastern point to 1.00 all back around again. So, as the East Angle slider moves from 0 to 1 (0.500 being Due West) you can watch the Sun rotating around the Z axis (vertical). Knowing, and being able to sense what you are doing with your lighting source (the Sun) as you slide your sliders should give you a nudge towards experimenting. And, that’s only two settings in one tab. We’ll have to venture into deciphering the rest of the features in later editions. Play around with them all. The worst that can happen is you can be labeled as an artist.
