discover us. discover you. discover us. discover you. Like many American teenagers, my introduction to Shakespeare was in a high-school English class where I learned the plots and characters of the plays, but not much else. Fortunately, I had another class with a different teacher and learned that Shakespeare was funny (among other things) and that his work was something to embrace rather than merely endure. That is when I learned to love Shakespeare. Since then, I’ve read Shakespeare’s plays (and sonnets) many times over, each time discovering something new about the texts and their meanings, always gaining a greater appreciation for the author’s genius but never really considering the author himself. If we accept that authors write best about things they know, wouldn’t that necessarily mean that the Bard had known real, passionate, heartbreaking love? What I discovered from Shakespeare in Love is that William Shakespeare was a living, breathing man, and it’s possible not only to love Shakespeare, but to be IN love with Shakespeare.
