It’s been awhile since I’ve really sat down and listened to classical music – Any suggestions?
Let go of any preconceptions you may have about classical music and prepare to enjoy yourself! Let the music trigger your emotions and memories. Keep an eye on how the conductor and musicians interact with each other, and pay attention to the beautiful rhythms and movements.

What Should I Wear?
There’s no dress code. Wear what makes you feel comfortable. Most people will be in business attire or dress clothes: you’ll see everything from khakis to cocktail dresses. Evening gowns and tuxedos are rare, but some people enjoy dressing up for a special night. It’s really up to you!

What time should I arrive at Symphony Hall?
Come early! Plan to arrive about

20 minutes prior to concert time. The Orchestra will start right on time, and you don’t want to listen from the lobby. If you do happen to arrive late, don’t fear. An usher will escort you inside during a pause in the program.

How long will the concert last?
Most concerts are about two hours long. Sometimes several pieces are played throughout the program; during others, one work is played straight through. Familiarizing yourself with the program before the concert starts will help you understand what to expect. Also, you’ll have about 15-20 minutes to stretch your legs, socialize, or grab a drink or snack from the lobby at intermission.

When should I applaud?
The audience doesn’t usually show their appreciation until the end of each piece. When a piece is finished, feel free to let loose with your applause!
