Vamp up your style with a touch of Vintage

ust like most girls my age I absolutely love going into my beloved city centre High Street to buy the hottest ‘must have’ fashion items and accessories of the season. However, when I recently attended a close friend’s house warming party it came to my horrified attention that there were not one, but two girls wearing ‘my’ dress! I later came to the conclusion that I was bored (and slightly irritated) being another High Street Clone, and decided it was time to put a much needed twist into my massproduced high street wardrobe. I therefore set out to see what Leeds has to offer in terms of vintage fashion, and also picked up a few helpful tips along the way!

J

Upstaged

My first stop was at the award winning Upstaged! Vintage, Retro and Theatrical Fashions. Situated in Leeds’ Grand Arcade, this two storey store has many cherry-picked vintage and retro finds, including a range of dresses, bags, shoes, hats and even umbrellas! However, the range of vintage clothes is not the only special feature about Upstaged; above the ground floor is a very unique Burlesque Boutique which sells hosiery, 1940’s/50’s pin-up inspired lingerie, and possibly the largest range of good quality corsets in the city centre, available in a variety of colours and sizes. (Also, if you

happen to be a burlesque performer you get a 10% discount!) Owned by Lorna Jasper, Upstaged also got a mention in Britain’s fashion bible Vogue. The customer service is extremely friendly and informative. Being a novice at vintage fashion, I interviewed Claire Woolridge from Upstaged who armed me with some essential advice and information about what to look out for when purchasing vintage clothes.

Size Matters

First and foremost I needed to understand the difference between the clothing sizes of a vintage item, which differs greatly from today’s generic size standards. Claire informed me that when purchasing a vintage item of clothing it is recommended to try on the next size up from your regular dress size. The reason for this she explains is because, “vintage clothes tend to be smaller, simply because women tended to be smaller, especially in the waist”. She also recommends purchasing vintage dresses that flatter your own body shape; for instance because of the smaller waist sizes, the late 40’s and early 50’s pieces would be compatible to today’s hourglass figure, resulting in a more womanly and feminine look. She also advises that, “the 1930’s style of clothing would suit those of a more androgynous and boy like figure”, which would bring with it an added essence of old school Hollywood glamour.

12 | 2010 Enchanté

/ In Transition Edition /

Handle with Care

Claire also advised me on how to care for my vintage buys. “It all depends on the fabric. Delicate care is needed; if it’s not from this era then don’t use anything like a machine to clean it with. Anything vintage from the 1930’s should never go near a washing machine!” Out with the New in with the Old! Claire explained to me the reasons for the revival of vintage clothes in today’s fashion; “the economic situation pushes people to look outside the box, and the Burlesque revival of the last couple of years is another reason. Any political change really effects fashion”. She goes onto explain the advantages of purchasing vintage clothes. “It’s something one-off, you’re not going to find anyone else that will be in it” (a fact I unfortunately know only too well about!). “All the pieces have a character and a story that you couldn’t get from a dress that’s from the high street. It’s more of a fashion experience, than just handing your cash over”. Prices vary for items, for more information check out Upstaged in the Grand Arcade No.5, Leeds LS1 6PG (www.upstagedleeds.co.uk)

All-American Vintage

I also headed to Leeds’ Corn Exchange to the newly opened All-American Vintage, where all the clothing has been hand-picked and imported from New York City. The most unique feature about this vintage shop is that ALL the clothes are (as the name suggests) American, so don’t expect to find anything British! The boutique sized shop sells only authentic vintage

clothing, mainly from the 1940’s to the 1980’s. The vintage clothes you can expect to purchase here consist of a great range of good quality dresses, along with a selection of accessories including bags, belts and shoes. Another plus point for All-American Vintage is that the assortment of vintage styles and clothing can easily be worked into your everyday (and night) wardrobe. However, the most impressive quality about this boutique is that it opposes the myth of vintage clothing being ‘drab and dreary’; the clothes on display evidently showcase a variety of vibrant colours from bright pinks to oranges (see below). And to top things off, the clothes are also in a very good clean condition. Definitely worth a look!

For more Vintage shops in Leeds also check out: Best Vintage: Just opposite the Corn Exchange, Best Vintage is filled with a variety of clothes and accessories. One great feature about this vintage shop is that customers can have their vintage items altered (i.e. fix faulty zips) at a reasonable rate. Ask within for more information. Blue Rinse: This shop sells a combination of vintage and re-made clothing. It also has a selection of accessories and a good range of denim. 9-11 Call Lane, Leeds LS1 7DH. (www.bluerinseleeds.co.uk) Pop Boutique: Is filled with vintage pieces and accessories, located just behind House of Fraser.

Summer A

s we leap into summer with our tradition ‘British’ expectations of the weather, we know that we want to look stylish and suave but need to have those layers to hand incase mother nature decides to take a turn for the worst. Usually whilst we are out frolicking in the park or some other wide open space with no shelter or warmth. With the help of Marou from Accent men’s in the Queens Arcade we have a couple of styles that will see you through all even eventualities that can be expected in Leeds around this time of year.

Static Stretching Dynamic Stretching Dynamic Stretching

s coaches and trainers we will perform anything from plyometrics to sprinting to reduce injury and increase performance. The real question is whether the type of stretching we chose to perform before an activity will have an effect on the performance and injury levels of our athletes.

A

Many coaches advocate the use of static stretching prior to exercise. Static stretching involves reaching forward to a point of tension and holding the stretch. Static stretching has been used throughout the years for two main reasons: injury prevention and performance enhancement. Does static stretching prior to activity achieve the goals of injury prevention and performance enhancement? Research has shown that static stretching can be detrimental to performance and doesn’t necessarily lead to decreasesin injury. Below are a few studies done on the topic of static stretching: •

Rod Pope an army physio therapist in Australia recently carried out a wide study to assess the relationship between static stretching and injury prevention. Pope monitored over 1600 recruits over the course of a year in randomised controlled trials. He found no differences in the occurrence of injury between those recruits who statically stretched and those who did not.

New research has shown that static stretching decreases eccentric strength for up to an hour after the stretch. Static stretching has been shown to decrease muscle strength by up to 9% for 60 minutes following the stretch and decrease eccentric strength by 7% followed by a specific hamstring stretch.

Many of the best strength coaches support the use of dynamic stretching. Dynamic stretching consists of functional based exercises which use sport specific movements to prepare the body for movement. “Dynamic stretching, according to Kurz, “involves moving parts of your body and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement, or both.” Do not confuse dynamic stretching with ballistic stretching! Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you (gently!) to the limits of your range of motion. Ballistic stretches involve trying to force a part of the body beyond its range of motion. In dynamic stretches, there are no bounces or “jerky” movements. Several professional coaches, authors and studies have supported or shown the effectiveness of dynamic stretching. Below are a few examples of support for dynamic stretching: • Mike Boyle uses a dynamic warm-up with his athletes. He goes through about 26000 workouts over the course of a summer. In 2002 he did not have one major muscle pull that required medical attention.

Lauren Haywood

Dynamic Flexibility increases core temperature, muscle temperature, elongates the muscles, stimulates the nervous system, and helps decrease the chance of injury.

Dynamic flexibility has been used successfully by trainers and coaches to increase flexibility and possibly lower the incidence of injury. It is the job of the coach or trainer to pick the method they feel is best suited for the sport and athletes. The above evidence suggests the possibility that static stretching prior to activity is not the best solution. Static stretching doesn’t necessarily lead to a decrease • Static based stretching programs seem best suited in injury and but may actually decrease performance. following an activity. If one purpose of the warm-up is to warm-up the body, wouldn’t static stretching actually cool the body down? If To summarise, these findings show that static stretching static stretching is not the solution to a pre-game warmdoes not improve the range of movement, speed, power up what is? or stamina of muscles!! Discover Sri Lanka eep down, underground, beneath the street and the scuttling ankles of Saturday afternoon shoppers, in an ill-lit staff room of a certain clothes shop on Briggate, there is a map. It is not a special map in anyway, it’s a simple highschool map of the world, I guess the management put it there as a kind of perverted joke. I could almost hear my boss smirk at me “I bet Hawaii is nice or even Tokyo? But you’ll never know, get back to work!” followed by a Bond villain-esque laugh. I had always had a fascination with the mysticism of the east so after months of scrimping and saving it came to be, my ticket was booked for Sri Lanka.

D

Sri Lanka is a small tropical island found off the South-East coast of India, it’s predominantly a Buddhist country but also has many Muslim, Hindu and Christian communities that manage to peacefully co-exist with one another. Due to its shape it is well known as ‘the tear of India’, such a fitting name for a place that has had such a tragic past. The much-publicised Boxing Day Tsunami was the most recent tragedy to occur on the island. The 30 year civil war between the

government and the separatist Tamil Tigers recently came to an end, I was surprised at the military presence as I left Colombo airport. However once I looked past this I was taken aback by the sheer natural beauty of the island. There were tropical jungles all around, the sea was crystal clear and there was nothing to look up to but the shimmering heat of the tranquil sun. I arrived at my hostel but I didn’t go in, I stood outside in the sun and let it sink into my skin and sooth my bones. I was on my own, thousands of miles away from home but I couldn’t be happier. The Sri Lankan people are some of the friendliest I have ever encountered, always smiling and friendly they have a child like quality about them, they are so innocent and good natured it’s hard to not feel welcomed by them.

The largest city, Colombo is nestled on the shore and surrounded by postcard beaches is a metropolis teaming and brimming waiting to explode, crawling, fidgeting endless people hurry by in a whirl of confusion. The red flash of a sari, the baking sun, the smell of spices and life, LIFE everywhere! The streets never stop, a constant sense of urgency keep the city moving, rice, beer, parrots, curry, elephants, dogs, water, monks, beaches, tourists, cricket, the senses come alive with the vibrating rhythm of the city. Shouts, laughter, hands shakes from the locals, fresh samosas, live chickens, the sea breeze, fisherman. Colombo consumes you and there is no point in fighting it, a city of everything and everyone, a circus of life where things are different, crazy and strange. Sri Lanka’s calmer sister and second major city is Kandy which is located

It’s high in the mountains and was the old throne of the ancient Sri Lankan kings, the climate is slightly cooler than Colombo on the shore. The two are only 60 miles apart so it’s just a short car journey away on winding mountain roads offering cooling winds. The perfect tea growing environment on the rich valleys that surround Kandy have enabled the region to be famous for the muchloved drink. Sri Lanka is the world’s fourth largest producer of tea, it’s easy to see why we Brits had such interest in the island. I can honestly say that I’ve never tasted tea like it, it has a dark brown colour, a thick texture and an unbelievably sweet taste.

This was the Temple of the Tooth that held the tooth of the original Buddha, the legend states that it was smuggled to Sri Lanka in the hair of an ancient Indian princess. This temple is a holy pilgrimage of Buddhists and a place that I will never forget. Brightly painted elephants walk the streets, fantastically decorated peacocks fill the temples and Lake Kandy sits there in all its splendour.

The streets rattle with the passing bells of cows and shimmer with the glowing orange Buddhist robes, as I roamed alone I found a perfect white temple that was built in the 17thcentury when the island was still known as Ceylon. The temple was filled with sweeping flags, golden Buddhas and a huge gold plated box surrounded by polished elephant tusks and minute stone carvings that struck with wonderment and awe, many humbled before them. n the heart of Headingley,Thai Sabai has been situated since 2007 and received rave reviews when it was first opened. I wondered if the multi award-winning restaurant could still cut it in the current times, especially with all the new competition. It feels like a new amazing restaurant seems to pop up every week in Leeds. Not that I’m complaining, I love it!

I

A very warm welcome was received as we were shown to the best table in the house, the window table that is perfect for people watching. We opted for the set meal B for two with extra soup as I was feeling a little under the weather and in need of warming up. The Chicken Tom kar had the perfect level of spice for myself. I’m more of a flavour lover and like to appreciate each herb and ingredients – an impossible task for me if there is an enormous amount of spice. The soup was full of the fresh vegetables needed to fight off a nasty cold and can only be explained as sensationally tongue tingling. The mixed Thai starter dish was made up of chicken satay skewers, deep fried prawns, fish cakes, and spring rolls. It was delicately decorated with vegetable accompaniments and dips. The fish cakes were especially bursting with flavour but all components were thoroughly enjoyable on the palate. The main dishes of chicken in red curry and beef with ginger were equally impressive. The curry has a very creamy texture that bode extremely well with the prawn with broccoli all culminating to provide

a very pleasurable experience. I’m not a massive baked fruit lover so I opted for the baked Thai custard. Boy was I glad that I made this decision, it’s the only thing needed to maintain a happy life, unfathomable delight. White wine is the perfect choice for optimum appreciation of Thai flavours. Atmosphere - Intimate and quite perfect for couples, alternatively large parties could have the whole venue. Service – Our waitress for the night was very knowledgeable about the menu and selected the perfect wine for us. Quality of product –Fresh tasting ingredients combined with simple yet distinctive flavours that compliment each other flawlessly. Value for money – Great ingredients, amazing flavours and seductive surroundings. Overall enjoyment – Simple surroundings, menu, and furniture letting the taste of the food does the talking. I can positively exclaim that Thai Sabai had defiantly ‘still got it’! If they maintain the same hosting values and impressive techniques in the kitchen, then it’s safe to say that they will never loose it. • •

They also have another venue in Chapel Alerton that is firmly on my hit list for the near future. The early bird menu offers 2 courses for £7.95 and 3 courses for £9.95.

his restaurant has been situated in the city centre for years now but has recently been taken under new management by the Lovely Ana who is very much the hostess with the mostess. She has created a harmonious and very relaxing setting for the diners to enjoying wonderful food cooked under the supervision of the head chef Nick. Nick was trained in our beloved Salvo’s and he certainly knows a think or two about Italian food!

T

The heart of Leeds (Twitter name) certainly captured our

hearts as we dined in the city centre venue one lunch time. Ana the restaurant manager is a very friendly and energetic lady who brightened up our day. The menu samples the finest dishes from Italian cuisine and was mouth wateringly attractive. I opted for the tuna steak and it was cooked to perfection, it was juicy and succulent with intense flavours. The tomato based sauce covering the potatoes worked perfectly in sync with the tuna to achieve that satisfied feeling. My fellow diner is a risotto lover so was keen to try the mushroom variety that was on offer. I could see the pure delight on her face as she ate each mouthful. It was perfectly textured with a creamy cheese topping. We decided to put the waiter to the test and challenged him to select us the perfect wine to accompany each of our dishes. This was a task that he completed with great ease, sliding over to our table in what seemed like a matter of seconds with two slightly different shades of white wine and urged us to try them. Mine was an exact match, very drinkable with floral and citrus notes. It came to dessert time and I honestly didn’t think I could fit any more food in. The waiter suggested that I try the light, fluffy and extremely seductive tiramisu, following his wise actions and words throughout our dining experience I decided to take his advice and indulge. Well, I have never seen a dessert the size of the chunk of cake that was on my plate when it arrived. I was flummoxed, it was easily enough for three people. The desserts are all home made in the Portofino kitchen. My cake was exactly how it is had been described, but I only managed to eat half! The Panna Cotta was AMAZING! Express Lunch menu £7.95

Tray Baked Salmon with Green Beans and Olives You need: 2 Salmon Fillets 300g Green Beans 4 Anchovies 10 Olives 1 Lemon Salt and pepper to season Splash of Olive Oil

Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with silver foil. Top and tail green beans and spread out on one side of the baking tray. On the other side of the baking tray place the salmon fillets, season with salt and pepper and squeeze some lemon on them. Drizzle olive oil over the salmon and green beans, and then lay the anchovies and olives over the green beans. Bake for 10 – 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the salmon. This is a really quick dish to make and don’t be put off by the anchovies, they add a great flavor to the beans as they melt into them. Serve it with new potatoes, mayonnaise and a wedge of lemon

Carrot Cake Muffins with a Lemon & Lime Frosting You Need: 2 175g 150ml 200g 2

large eggs caster sugar sunflower oil self-raising flour medium carrots coarsely grated

Pinch of grated nutmeg Pinch of coriander powder ½ inch grated ginger Zest of one lemon

For the topping: 300g soft cheese 50g icing sugar Zest of one lemon Zest of one lime

Method: Preheat the oven to 180 C and place 12 paper muffin cases in a muffin tin. Break the eggs in a large bowl and beat in the sugar and oil with an electric whisk for a few minutes until light and fluffy. Using a metal spoon, gently fold in the flour, spices and ginger, grated carrot and lemon zest until the mixture is combined. Divide the mixture between the cases and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until risen and golden brown and then leave to cool on a cooking rack. Once the muffins have cooled, beat together the soft cheese and icing sugar until smooth and creamy, then add the lemon and lime zest and spread onto muffins once they have cooled. If you don’t have muffin cases you can use a regular cake tin and cook for a further 10 minutes or until you can put a knife through the middle and it comes out clean.

Samsung Navibot Next generation robotic vacuum cleaner!

Naguib Hajiani k, so you’ve seen them on the TV in movies such as “Batteries Not Included” and other futuristic films where robots do your housework. Some think it’ll be a while until those things come to life. Others think “it won’t happen in my lifetime”. Well here’s where you’re wrong.

O

Over the last decade there have been lots of developments into electronics, in particular, robotics. There are a number of gadgets that already help the elderly or those who are handicapped. Ok, so they might not have been the best or most practical gadgets but Samsung have gone one step further and are due to release a gadget that everyone can have, the Samsung Navibot. The Navibot comes with its own docking station which charges the vacuum cleaner when it’s not in use. The Navibot is fitted with an on board camera and infra-red sensors which when switched on, scan the room that the Navibot is placed in and within 30 seconds, it has a visual map of where it needs to clean. Its ingenious on board computer plots the best route to clean and off it goes! So now you’re thinking, what about all the obstacles in the room, is it going to bang into them or just miss them

entirely? Nope! Remember the on board sensors, they stop the unit from crashing into the walls or knocking into a flower pot or falling down the stairs. It also has two “smartgate” sensors which create a barrier between items in your room that it should steer clear from. As it’s such a small unit, the battery can be a little temperamental but that’s another smart function, it knows when it’s running out of juice, finds its way back to the docking station and recharges itself before carrying on from where it left off! Once it’s finally done what it needs to do, it finds its way back to the docking station using the shortest route. The on board computer also lets you set a timer on the unit to clean up when you’re not in the room. So you could set it to go whilst you’re out shopping or at work or even whilst you’re preparing for guests. It’s an easy way to get things done for those of us who have busy lifestyles and are always on the go. The unit has a clean finish and has touch sensitive buttons and also has a remote control to get the unit going with your feet up. The Navibot is available from April 2010 and is priced around £350.00.

Micmacs à tire-larigot ‘The French master has done it again’! rom the director of Amelie and Delicatessan, comes Mimacs; a deliciously funny and always eccentric comedy that leaves you wondering why life isn’t lived out inside Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s head. Our ‘Amelie Poulain’ of ‘Micmacs’ is Bazil (Dany Boon), a man who is down on his luck homeless, after a bullet becomes lodged permanently in his brain that could at any moment kill him instantly. With his life turned askew, he begins roaming the streets making small change by performing for the public before he is taken in by a band of misfits who fix junk they find from the street. Having lost his father to a landmine accident when he was a small boy and with a constant reminder of the destructive power of military weapons lodged permanently in his cranium, Bazil embarks on a master plan to bring down the two arms dealers that supplied the items that so damaged his life. Obviously with a little help from his new found family who each have their own unique skill to bring to the table such as the human calculator who can measure anything just by looking at it or the guiness world record holder for being the human

cannonball. And not to forget the contortionist, and love interest of our zany main character, who can fit herself into a fridge. Jeunet’s love of the unusual brings these characters together as a veritable fighting force that can only be compared to a freak show version of the A-team. The story that ensues is one that will tickle you immensely as bazil’s misshapen crack squad go to amazing lengths to help him in his task. What puts a smile on your face and makes this movie great to watch though, are the ‘little things’, like those that encompassed the world of Amelie and the characters around her. This however is the only criticism that one can have of Micmacs; just as the characters recycle old junk that they find, Jeunet is recycling, or at least using, old ideas from his previous celluloid adventures. But who cares when you have Dany Boon enter screen in true Jeunet quirk, squeezing soft dairylea-style triangle cheese from one corner of the foil, whilst mouthing the words to a scene from The Big Sleep. Micmacs is a delight to watch and all I can say is ’The French master has done it again’! Dan Deroy

’The French

Ms daosntee rit ha again’!

Music

S Freak On - Lee Curtiss - Get Physical (Tech-house) ee Curtiss is going from strength to strength this year with both phenomenal D.J sets and some delightful productions and his latest release ‘Freak On’ only backs this up. Snapped up by Booka Shade’s ‘Get Physical’ label, the track is jammed with bouncy synths, dark vocals and some nose-scrunching squelch but with a sound more geared towards disco than to most of Curtiss’ previous releases. It’s a path that many house producers are exploring nowadays and the disco-vibe will no doubt win a few extra fans over in time for summer. Despite the disco
