1968-69 Eastern Michigan wins its second straight NAIA District Championship and advances to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, where the Hurons make it to the second round. 1969-70 Once again, the Green and White advance to Kansas City for the NAIA Nationals. After winning their first game, the Hurons get knocked out in the second round by Guilford. Earle Higgins gets drafted in both the NBA and fledgling ABA, by San Francisco and Indiana, respectively, while Harvey Marlatt is the No. 16 pick of the Detroit Pistons. 1970-71 Led by Kennedy McIntosh, the Hurons advance all the way to the finals in the NAIA National Championships before losing to Kentucky State, 102-82. McIntosh becomes the No. 1 round draft choice of the Chicago Bulls in the National Basketball Association (NBA). On July 15, 1971, Eastern Michigan University proudly becomes a new member of the Mid-American Conference. 1971-72 Eastern Michigan records an outstanding 24-7 record for the season. The Hurons win the NCAA-College Division Regional Championship and advance to the Final Four in Evansville, Ind. EMU sophomore George Gervin leads the team in scoring and rebounding and earns All-America honors. 1977-78 Former EMU great George Gervin is named the NBA’s Player of the Year. 1987-88 Head Coach Ben Braun leads the Hurons to their first-ever Mid-American Conference men’s basketball championship. Eastern also captures the MAC post-season crown and earns its first NCAA-Division I National Championship berth. Sent to Lincoln, Neb., for the first round, Eastern runs into a highly-rated University of Pittsburgh squad and drops a 108-90 decision. Center Grant Long is drafted in the second round of the NBA draft by the Miami Heat after earning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year honors.
