January 2011

Dear members of EMSA, Have you ever thought about getting active on the European level? Do you have great ideas and an amazing vision, how EMSA might look like in 2012? Then we are pleased to present you this document full of possibilities! We would like to tell you about the possibilities of getting active on the European level, without being responsible for all formal duties that an EMSA European Board (EEB) member has to fulfill. We want to tell you about the Workgroup!! The Workgroup has been established a bit over a year ago, during the EMSA General Assembly 2009 in Heidelberg (Germany). The Workgroup consist of a collection of people who are active on the European level, but are not in the EEB.

We think it is now time to shape up the Workgroup and increase the activity and use of it! EMSA has four pillars (Medical Education, Medical Science, Medical Ethics and Public Health, and European Integration) and each pillar is guided by a Director. It is the Director’s job to help the local members to organize projects, to spread projects and lead European projects. Besides that they attend meetings that are interesting for their pillar. The current four directors have great plans for their pillars! But without people to help them, it will be difficult improve their projects and spread them around! In this document we will first give you some general information about the Workgroup and after that pillar-related information. At the end we will explain how you can apply. If you have any questions after reading this document, please don’t hesitate to contact us!! We are looking forward to your questions and applications! We hope that, with your help, we can improve EMSA’s projects and make EMSA a little bit better! (And if you don’t want to do anything on the European level, but you did get interested in organising a project on the local level, you are also very welcome to contact us!) 2

GENERAL INFORMATION “Being in the Workgroup is a great way to meet and work together with people from other European countries!!” The workgroup consist of a group of people who are active on the European level, but are not responsible for all formal duties an EEB member has to fulfill. They help the Directors with their tasks. They can be an general assistant or an project-coordinating assistant. Another possibility is being active in a brainstorm-team. More information about the ‘positions’ can be found in the next chapters. Positions: You can read about this in the next chapters. Length of term: The idea of the Workgroup is that you can be involved for as long as you want to. We do prefer that you’re active for at least four months, to ensure continuity, and preferable longer. When you want to quit, it is very important you communicate this with the Director on time. This way there will be enough time to find a successor and to give a proper handover. We’re sure you understand the importance of this! Time: It is difficult to say what amount of time exactly you will have to spend on it. It also depends on the position. But most important: it’s up to your creativity, your commitment and your dedication! You can really change things if you want to! Meetings: There probably won’t be any special face to face meetings, since it would be too expensive for most members to attend those. But when the group decides that they want a face to face meeting and it is logistically possible, of course they can!! You can meet with the Director during the National Coordinators and Enthusiast’ meeting (NCM) in May 2011 in Warsaw (Poland) and the General Assembly (GA) in September 2011 in Leiden (the Netherlands). These are the two biggest meetings of EMSA. Besides that, there will be online meetings (using Skype) with your Director and other members of the Workgroup to discuss ongoing business. The frequency of the online meetings depends on the need, but you will probably start with one meeting a month. 5

Responsibly: The final responsibility will still be for the Director. That is why you have to be in close contact with him/her and keep him/her updated about your activities. Creativity: Most positions are new. So there won’t be anybody to give you a handover, but the Director will be there to guide you and help you to make the best out of it! Together you will decide how you will reach the goals the Director has for the project and how to improve the quality and quantity of it. A new position is a big challenge, but also gives you a lot of possibilities and freedom to use creativity. Teamwork: Depending on the amount of people that fill in the application form, one or two people will be appointed to coordinate each project. When you are part of a (brainstorm-)team it is obvious that you will work in a team. Besides with other people from the Workgroup, you will be in close contact with the Director. Communication with the Director: The Director holds the final responsibility for the project. Because of that, he/she wants to know what you’re doing. Contact with the Director will go by email or by an online meeting. Together you will discuss and decide what you exact tasks will be, so you will be able to do the best job possible! Communication with the VPI: It is the job of the VPI to lead the four Directors. If you have any problem with your Director, you can contact the VPI, in order to work it out together. Besides that, the VPI will of course also be very happy to receive positive emails on how you’re doing in the Workgroup! Experience: For some positions experience with the project is necessary or very much appreciated. This is so that you can give the members of EMSA better advise and help, when they have questions about the project. Of course the Director will be there as well, to help you and the members of EMSA. For other positions experience is not required.

MEDICAL SCIENCE “Search for the old questions with new medical technology; unlock the processes of disease and the mechanisms of possible cure. Medicine is the biological science and the art of healing. After discussing the needs of each pillar it was clear that something special was needed for the Medical Science pillar. On both the local and the European level are not many projects organized that belong to this pillar. That is why Borislav, the Medical Science Director, wants a team that can brainstorm on new projects and the implementation of these projects. Of course, he has some ideas, but he wants your input in order to create the perfect project, that can run on the local level. Do you like science? Do you have ideas on how to implement scientific oriented projects on the local level? Or do you just want to take this opportunity to learn more about how to start new projects? Join the brainstorm-team of the Medical Science pillar! Medical Science brainstorm-team: Number of people: 10-12 Tasks: brainstorm on new projects for the Science pillar. Help to implement these projects. Special requirements: enthusiasm! Besides a Medical Science pillar brainstorm-team Borislav also likes to have a personal assistant. Süleyman, has already appointed project coordinator for a few projects (like Teddy Bear Hospital and Health Erasmus Project), but he wants project coordinator for other projects as well. Besides that he wants a team for several projects. Süleyman would like to have one or two assistants, who can help him with his general tasks as a Medical Education Director. They have eleven ‘work-packages’; these are subjects MEDINE2 is active in. Four of them deal with the central coordination of the Network, the other seven are theme specific. These subjects differ from language skill, to define learning outcomes, improve the research component in the curricula and mobility. You can find a lot more information about MEDINE2 and the Work packages on their website (www.medine2.com). Süleyman needs a Student Taskforce for MEDINE2. This Taskforce serves as a bridge between the ideas of medical students and the professional regulated ideas. This student team will include both IFMSA and EMSA members. You can be a general member or assigned to one of the workpackages. A general member will be responsible for reporting and coordinating the group. When you’re assigned to one of the workpackages you will report about that work-package to Süleyman and the others. You will be responsible for that work-package and may attend meetings and workshops (if possible) about the subject. The seven work-packages are: 1. MEDINELingua – they gather and present language learning materials 2. Mobility Toolkit – to promote openness and mobility in medical education and training

Members assigned to a work-package are responsible for that work-package and to report about that to Süleyman. Special requirements: enthusiasm for medical education (and if you want to apply for a work-package, enthusiasm for that subject), being able to take active part in discussions (since promoting the students ideas is very important).

You will work together with her to improve the quality of the project and together you will attempt to spread the project to other FMOs. Below you find a short description of each project and information about the position.

Twinning Project: Maybe the best running project of EMSA! Twinning Project is an exchange program where a group of medical students from one faculty visit a faculty in another country and receive their hosts later on in their city.
