Cantantes y grupos de fuera y dentro de nuestras fronteras marcarán durante varios días el ritmo de nuestras calles. Madrid se volverá a ver en todo el mundo. Y cuando los focos de ese día se hayan apagado, continuarán los del festival de jazz. O los de las decenas de pequeños clubes en donde el pentagrama se convierte en sonido, y la piel se eriza de emoción.

For these reasons alone, there seems no better place than Madrid to provide the stage for MTV’s 2010 Europe Music Awards. Solo artists and groups from Spain and beyond will pick up the rhythms of our streets, as Madrid takes centre stage with the world looking on. And when the curtains close on this event, the lights of the Jazz Festival and dozens of small clubs will continue to shine, as the musical notes on the score turn to sound and the emotion becomes palpable.

On November 7, Madrid will play host for the first time to MTV’s most spectacular awards. Although the ceremony will be held in the Caja Mágica, numerous concerts will also be staged around Puerta de Alcalá.

The Caja Mágica centre, in the Linear Park of the Manzanares river, is the chosen venue to host the 17th edition of the musical channel’s European awards ceremony. The huge event, which is followed by 600 million people worldwide, brings together every year some of the most well-known faces from the international music scene. In addition to the awards ceremony and the performances which will fill the building designed by Dominique Perrault, the event will also include a weekend of concerts on an outdoor stage around Puerta de Alcalá erected for the occasion in the city centre. This latest edition of the Madrid International Jazz Festival is the event’s 27th, and, as usual, is a not-to-be-missed date for lovers of the genre. This time round, the most eagerly anticipated musical event of the autumn will be inaugurated by the exceptional saxophonist Wayne Shorter, companion of Miles Davis and inseparable friend of Zawinul, the master of improvisation. This legend of contemporary music will be performing on the 2nd at the Fernán Gómez Teatro. This same theatre will be serving as the festival’s main venue. Located in a former glass shop, Central has been part of the scene for 28 years, always offering top class music. Every style of jazz, every type of fusion and all genres of music have found a place on the now legendary stage.

Having presented nightly concerts for fifteen years, the Populart has become a part of Madrid’s musical history. Jazz ‘Made in Spain’ has come of age here, with masters like Pedro Iturralde, Lou Bennett and Malik Yaqub, as well as young musicians who have become well-known names, such as Perico Sambeat and Jorge Pardo. These artists and many others have shared the stage, whether in the early morning hours or during celebrated jam sessions, with fellow musicians such as Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval and Chick Corea’s new group, Origin.

Clamores nació, entre los barrios de Chamberí y Malasaña, un 25 de julio de 1981 como sala de música en vivo que quería ser referente de la cultura en Madrid pero con un punto canalla. Chano Domínguez, Jerry González y Bill Evans han pasado por aquí, pero también Antonio Vega y muchos otros cantautores, ya que su programación está abierta a otros estilos.

Clamores, located between the Chamberí and Malasaña neighbourhoods, was born on July 25, 1981. Conceived as a live music club, it opened with the goal of contributing to Madrid’s culture whilst maintaining a popular appeal. Chano Domínguez, Jerry González and Bill Evans have passed through its doors, and so have Antonio Vega and many other songwriters, since all styles of music are welcome.

Con quince años de conciertos celebrados cada noche, el Populart forma parte ya de la historia de la música en Madrid. En su escenario ha crecido el jazz hecho en España desde el magisterio de Pedro Iturralde, Loy Bennet y Malik Yaqub hasta músicos jóvenes, hoy auténticas realidades, como Perico Sambeat o Jorge Pardo. Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome...No, unfortunately Liza Minnelli doesn’t make an appearance at the Berlín café every night, but it seems like the kind of a place where she could. The New York Times definió a este local como “el club de jazz con más encanto de toda la ciudad”. Algo a lo que contribuyen las luces de neón de la entrada y su interior, de estilo art decó. Por aquí han pasado grandes músicos internacionales, así como jóvenes promesas. Un espacio íntimo, agradable y tranquilo, donde el protagonista indiscutible es el jazz.

A elegir: la planta alta, para charlar y tomar una copa en la zona lounge , o la planta baja, para disfrutar de buena música en directo. El Tempo es uno de esos locales que dicen ser diferentes del resto y, en realidad, lo es. Take your choice: the upper floor, to chat and have a drink in the lounge area, or the lower floor, to enjoy the great live music. The Tempo is one of those places that claims to be different from the rest, and in fact it actually is. La muestra traza el desarrollo de la pintura de jardines, con obras de las grandes figuras del Impresionismo y de sus precursores, entre ellos Delacroix y Corot, así como de artistas posteriores como Klimt, Munch y Sargent. Gracias a la introducción de cientos de plantas y especies de flores procedentes de Asia, África y América los jardines gozaron de gran popularidad desde 1860, y hacia ellos miraron los maestros en busca de inspiración. Featuring works by the most prominent artists of that period, their precursors –including Delacroix and Corot– and later painters like Klimt, Munch and Singer Sargent, the exhibition examines the significance, origins, and influence of the Impressionist garden. Hundreds of species of plants and flowers were imported from Asia, Africa and America making the gardens extremely popular from 1860 and a source of inspiration for the great masters.

La oportunidad de ver a la Compañía Nacional de Danza y la Compañía Nacional de Danza 2 en el mismo programa es una ocasión única (del 12 al 14, Teatros del Canal). También lo será disfrutar de Giselle a cargo del Ballet de Lyon (del 25 al 28, Teatros del Canal), de la modernidad de Win Vandekeybus (del 12 al 14, Teatro de Madrid) o de la delicadeza del solo Blue Lady de Carolyn Carlson interpretada por el finlandés Tero Saarinen (del 18 al 20, Teatros del Canal). With the goal of spotlighting contemporary choreography and bringing new directions in dance to the public, the latest edition of Madrid en Danza kicks off, this year celebrating its 25th anniversary. En la sección oficial compiten en esta ocasión 51 cortometrajes procedentes de todas las partes del mundo. Habrá, además, actividades paralelas, como las proyecciones especiales de Las (The Forest), ópera prima del polaco Piotr Dumala, y Lucía, del chileno Niles Atallah. El país invitado es Afganistán.

Llega la XV edición del Festival Internacional de Cine Lésbico, Gay y Transexual de Madrid, con proyección de películas en diferentes espacios de la ciudad, como el Ateneo de Madrid (Prado, 21), la Casa de América (Plaza de Cibeles, s/n) o el Lola Bar (Reina, 25). How many tickets? How much is it? Hello! See you later. See you tomorrow... The songs from a musical. These are the sounds of Gran Vía, the sounds heard on any given day, at any given time, almost without us paying any attention to them. The hundred-year-old street is one of Madrid’s main thoroughfares, upon which thousands of people converge each day, inadvertently creating the background music of this city.

Ruido de tráfico, de cucharillas que remueven el café, voces que hablan en inglés, chino o francés, algún brindis en el Chicote, actores que conversan desde el otro lado de la pantalla del cine, ¿cuántas entradas quiere?, ¿cuánto cuesta? ¡Hola! Nos vemos. Hasta mañana… Las canciones de un musical. Son los sonidos de la Gran Vía, todo lo que se escucha cualquier día, a cualquier hora, casi sin necesidad de prestar mucha atención. La centenaria calle es uno de los principales ejes de Madrid, donde confluyen cada día miles de personas que crean sin querer la música de fondo de esta ciudad.

Pero la avenida que ahora celebra su aniversario también tiene su propia música. Todo comenzó un 2 de julio de 1886, años antes de que empezase su construcción. Entonces se presentó al gran público La Gran Vía, revista madrileña cómico-lírica y fantástico-callejera firmada por Federico Chueca y Joaquín Valverde. En ella, las calles de Madrid se presentaban ante el Ayuntamiento para impedir que se llevara a cabo la construcción de la avenida. Y es que el proyecto originario tuvo muchos detractores.

Con el tiempo, la calle se ha convertido en referente obligado de los cantautores madrileños de nacimiento o de corazón, como Joaquín Sabina, que ve desde un balcón cómo su amor se pierde en el trajín de la calle en Donde habita el olvido o hace que But the avenue now celebrating this special anniversary has its own music, too. It all started on 2 July 1886, years before construction work on the street had even begun. That was the date when La Gran Vía, a “comical-lyrical, fantastical-streetwise” variety show by Federico Chueca and Joaquín Valverde made its début before the Madrid public. On stage, the streets of the city came to life and presented themselves before the city council to try and prevent the avenue’s construction. The original project had more than its fair share of critics. Over time, however, the street has become an obligatory reference in the work of those singer-songwriters who call Madrid home (whether they were born here or not), such as Joaquín Sabina, who in Donde habita el olvido watches from a balcony as his love

La famosa movida de los 80 se vivió en las calles de la ciudad, en torno a barrios como el de Malasaña, con Madrid siempre, una y otra vez, como gran referente, protagonista en las letras de muchísimas canciones. Aunque sólo un cantautor, Antonio Flores, ya en los 90, dedicó un tema a la Gran Vía: “Gastada la acera por la gente al pasar / pies acostumbrados a la velocidad / personas que viven a un ritmo infernal”… disappears into the hustle and bustle of this very street and who has the central character of A la sombra de un león, a hit for Ana Belén, trying his luck at the famous lottery office of Doña Manolita. “Tirso de Molina, Sol, Gran Vía, Tribunal…” goes the chorus of another of his biggest hits, Caballo de cartón, naming the Metro stations through which his girl passes on her way to the office. The famous movida of the ‘80s was lived out on the streets of the city, around neighbourhoods like that of Malasaña, but always with Madrid, again and again, as the centre, the star of countless song lyrics. But only one singer-songwriter, Antonio Flores, in the 1990s, dedicated a song just to Gran Vía: “The pavement worn by the people passing by, feet used to walking fast, people living at a hellish pace”...

Santiago Auserón, lead singer of Radio Futura, brought a Latin beat to the street in Un africano por Gran Vía. So did Malevaje, with borrowed rhythms of tango, milonga and habanera, in the amusing A mi modo y con mi acento, featuring Antonio Bartrina’s famous line, delivered in his characteristic voice, of “Gran Vía takes Corrientes by the arm”, alluding to the street in Buenos Aires, famous for its bustling nightlife. The night keeps time for Quique González in 1956 (“I go up and down Gran Vía like a policeman on his beat, like the hitchhiker of her dreams”) and for the duo of Pereza, who turn the street into one of their favourite haunts in their catchy Madrid.

Pero por mucho que el tiempo pase, las modas cambien y aparezcan nuevas estrellas en el panorama musical quién no recuerda aquel chotis de Agustín Lara que sonaba así: “Cuando vengas a Madrid, chulona mía / voy a hacerte emperatriz de Lavapiés / y alfombrarte con claveles la Gran Vía / y a bañarte con vinillo de Jerez”. Un tema inmortal que en 2010 versionaron a ritmo de rock Ariel Rot y el grupo The Cabriolets, con Bimba Bosé al frente. Ya sólo nos queda pedir una vez más ¡que suene la música! La Gran Vía cumple cien años y está de fiesta. Santiago Auserón, líder de Radio Futura, recorría la calle “balanceándose” con aires muy latinos en Un africano por la Gran Vía, y Malevaje a ritmo de tango, milonga y habanera en la divertida A mi modo y con mi acento, en la que Antonio Bartrina, con su voz arrastrada, dice aquello de que “La Gran Vía se da el brazo con Corrientes”, en alusión a la calle de Buenos Aires, famosa por su gran actividad nocturna. La noche marca los pasos de Quique González en 1956 (“subo y bajo Gran Vía como un policía local / como el autoestopista de sus sueños”) y del dúo Pereza, que la convierte en uno de sus rincones preferidos de la ciudad en su pegadizo Madrid.

Unión Radio fue inaugurada por el rey Alfonso XIII un 17 de junio de 1925. La sede de Madrid se estableció entonces en el edificio de los Almacenes Madrid-París de la centenaria calle, donde aún continúa, ahora formando parte de la cadena SER. En los años 40 la incorporación de Robert Kieve, procedente de Estados Unidos, significó la importación de un modelo de radio desconocido en España. Bobby Deglané y José Luis Pécker siguieron su estela y fueron pioneros en hacer radio-espectáculo. Cantantes como Rocío Dúrcal o Ana Belén son sólo dos ejemplos de artistas descubiertas en los talent-shows de la época. La música siempre ha sido protagonista en la emisora, con programas tan célebres como El gran musical o Los 40 principales, y locutores carismáticos como Joaquín Luqui, Pepe Domingo Castaño o José María Iñigo.

Its Madrid headquarters were set up back then in the Almacenes MadridParís building on Gran Vía, and are still there to this day, now forming part of the Cadena SER network. In the 1940s, Robert Kieve brought with him a model of radio that was still unheard of in Spain. Bobby Deglané and José Luis Pécker followed his lead and became pioneers of the new radio “shows”. Singers such as Rocío Dúrcal and Ana Belén are just two of the names discovered in the talent shows made popular during this period. Music has always been at the very centre of the station, with programmes as famous as El gran musical and Los 40 principales, and charismatic presenters like Joaquín Luqui, Pepe Domingo Castaño and José María Iñigo.

Arias, duets, quartets and romances from the most famous and well-loved operas and operettas are performed by talented artists, while the guests take their seats and peruse the menu. The Café de la Ópera (Arrieta, 6. Tel. 91 542 63 82), across from the Teatro Real, offers dinner and song every night of the week. The intensity of the music builds up over the course of the meal, reaching its climax during dessert. The singers, champagne glass in hand, lead the audience in raising a toast, to the music of La Traviata.

La Castafiore

Arias, dúos, cuartetos y romanzas de las más célebres y conocidas óperas y zarzuelas resuenan en la voz de grandes artistas mientras los comensales dan buena cuenta de la carta. El Café de la Ópera (Arrieta, 6. Tel. 91 542 63 82), frente al Teatro Real, ofrece todas las noches cenas cantadas que van in crescendo hasta que a la hora de los postres llega el momento cumbre. Los cantantes, con una copa de cava en la mano, convocan al auditorio a brindar al ritmo de los acordes de La Traviata.

Antonio Canales, Enrique and Estrella Morente, José Mercé, Carmen Linares, Paco de Lucía, Niña Pastori, Sara Baras and even Camarón de la Isla are just some of the illustrious artists who have helped to create the unique experience which is brought to life every night at Casa Patas (Cañizares, 10. Tel. 91 369 04 96). Awarded the 2009 Enrique Maya prize for its promotion of flamenco music and dance, this tablao, or flamenco bar, also offers a menu built around traditional Spanish dishes and delicacies.

El Corral de la Morería (Morería, 17. Tel. 91 365 84 46) also has a long and vibrant history; it first opened in 1956 close to the Royal Palace. As one of the best flamenco venues in the capital, El Corral has seen the greatest artists and most demanding audiences come through its doors. Saturday performances feature Blanca del Rey, winner of the National Flamenco prize. The restaurant offers fixed-price menus which include the Menú Morería (43€), the Menú Soleá (53€) and the Menú Alegrías (66€). Café de Chinitas (Torija, 7. Tel. 91 547 15 02), located on the ground floor of a 17th century building, offers the same classic pairing: flamenco and Spanish cuisine. During 2010, you can try the Menú Especial Gran Vía (paella and apple fritters with apricot jam), in celebration of the avenue’s first centenary.

Tel. 91 369 04 96), galardonada en 2009 con el premio Enrique Maya por su difusión del flamenco. El tablao ofrece, además, una carta a base de productos y platos tradicionales de la gastronomía española.

Mucha historia tiene también El corral de la Morería (Morería, 17. Tel. 91 365 84 46), inaugurado en 1956 junto al Palacio Real. Toda una catedral flamenca por la que han pasado los mejores artistas y el público más exigente. Los sábados actúa Blanca del Rey, Premio Nacional de Flamenco. En la carta se puede elegir entre el Menú Morería (43 €), el Menú Soleá (53 €) y el Menú Alegrías (66 €). El Café de Chinitas (Torija, 7. Junto al Museo de la Ciudad y a sólo unos pasos del Auditorio Nacional, Al Fanus (Pechuán, 6. Tel. 91 562 77 18) es el único restaurante en Madrid especializado en cocina siria mediterránea. La decoración al estilo árabe mantiene el equilibrio perfecto entre sencillez y elegancia. En la carta, makdus (berenjenas maceradas en aceite de oliva, pimiento y nueces), hummus (crema de garbanzos), shish kafta (brochetas de carne de cordero picada a la brasa)… Y, a los postres, una danza del vientre de las Mil y una Noches. Un espectáculo similar ofrece el hammam Medina Mayrit (Atocha, 14. Tel. 902 33 33 34) en su restaurante. Sabores de Al Andalus (pastela, cuscús, tajine…) y bailes llenos de color cada noche.

Near the Museum of the City and just a stone’s throw from the National Auditorium, Al Fanus (Pechuán, 6. Tel. 91 562 77 18) is Madrid’s only restaurant specialising in Syrian-Mediterranean cuisine. The Arabicstyle decor maintains a perfect balance between simplicity and elegance. The menu includes makdous (aubergine stuffed with walnut, pepper and olive oil), hummus (chickpea puree), shish kafta (charcoal grilled brochettes of minced lamb), and much more. To accompany dessert, the restaurant features belly dancing from the One Thousand and One Nights. A similar show is offered at the restaurant of the Medina Mayrit Arabic Baths (Atocha, 14. Tel. 902 33 33 34), with flavours from AlAndalus (pastela, couscous, tagine etc.) and colourful dancing every night.

Musical notation In his essay Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911), Kandinsky writes that “shades of colour, like those of sound, are of a much finer texture and awaken in the soul emotions too fine to be expressed in words”. We could try to explain this work, entitled Delicate Tension, using adjectives such as impetuous, joyous or fleeting, but no doubt a sound would describe it better. And so, abstract art, music’s sibling, is born –in a place beyond narrative and the descriptive.

For artists such as Klee and MoholyNagy, both teachers at the Bauhaus, the musical stave became the most immediate visual reference of music. Just as the conductor of an orchestra can hear the concert merely by reading the score, so these painters drew the melody within the painting. In Omega 5, an open curtain gives us a glimpse of three objects, each of which appears to grow out from its centre and resembles in some way a percussion instrument. Or, better still, the sound made by a percussion instrument. In Large Railway Painting, the letters and numbers hold a simple phonetic value: R, E or 151. As they move along the stave, a yellow dot, like the clash of a cymbal, scattered them across the canvas.

Notación musical En su ensayo De lo espiritual en el arte (1911), Kandisky escribe que “los tonos de los colores, al igual que los musicales, son de naturaleza más matizada, despiertan vibraciones anímicas mucho más sutiles que las que se pueden expresar con palabras”. Podríamos tratar de explicar esta obra, titulada Tensión suave, con adjetivos como impetuosa, alegre o fugaz, pero sin duda un sonido la describiría mejor. Así nace el arte abstracto, hermano de la música, más allá de lo narrativo y de lo descriptivo.

El pentagrama musical se convirtió para artistas como Klee o Moholy-Nagy, ambos profesores en la Bauhaus, en la más inmediata referencia visual de la música. Al igual que el director de orquesta escucha el concierto con tan sólo leer la partitura, estos pintores dibujan la melodía dentro del cuadro. En Omega 5, una cortina entreabierta nos deja ver tres objetos que crecen desde su centro y que de alguna manera podríamos vincular con instrumentos de percusión. O mejor aún, con el sonido propio de un instrumento de percusión. En Gran pintura del ferrocarril las letras y los números tienen sólo un valor fonético: decimos R, E o 151. Cuando circulaban sobre un pentagrama, un punto amarillo, a modo de estruendo, las ha desperdigado por el lienzo.

La música de las máquinas Mientras, en París, varios artistas se interesaron por la música moderna. En Acompañamiento sincopado (staccato), de la serie Ciclo de las máquinas, Kupka vincula los ritmos del jazz con el ruido de una fábrica. Influenciado por el futurismo y por el cubismo, frecuentó el círculo de Puteaux, que investigaba la relación de la música con las matemáticas y la pintura, y del que formaron parte artistas como los hermanos Duchamp o Léger, cuya obra El disco, también puede verse en el museo. Colócate delante del cuadro y trata de escuchar la música silenciosa que está sonando: poco a poco un motor, un taladro y unas bobinas se transforman en un saxofón, un bajo y una trompeta.

The music of the machines Meanwhile, in Paris, several artists were becoming interested in modern music. In Syncopated Accompaniment (staccato), from his Machine Cycle series, Kupka linked the rhythms found in jazz with the noise of the factory. Influenced by Futurism and Cubism, he frequented the gatherings of the Puteaux group, which was investigating the relationship between music, mathematics and painting, and which included artists such as the Duchamp brothers and Léger, whose work The Disc can also be found in the museum. Stand in front of the painting and try to hear the silent music that is playing: gradually, an engine, a drill and a humming coil transform into a saxophone, a double bass and a trumpet.

Cuando llega el mes de diciembre la ciudad transforma su imagen habitual y se convierte en otra mucho más dinámica y efervescente. Todo comienza con el encendido de los espacios de luz que iluminarán todo Madrid, con un espectáculo de canto, danza, acrobacia aérea y efectos de pirotecnia. Los más pequeños revivirán su encuentro con la Navidad en La Ciudad de los Niños, en la plaza de Colón, que contará con diversas carpas, talleres, construcciones sonoras y un laberinto transparente. La música volverá a inundar las calles más céntricas de la mano de diferentes corales, de la Banda Sinfónica Municipal y con la programación de diversos ciclos en los distritos. El colofón lo pondrá la Cabalgata de Reyes que, durante la tarde-noche del 5 de enero, volverá a llenar de magia e ilusión su recorrido por los paseos de la Castellana y de Recoletos.

The switching on of the Christmas lights, which illuminate the entire city, is accompanied by a show featuring singing, dancing, air aerobics and fireworks. Once again, children are invited to step into Kids’ City and discover the marquees, workshops, sonorous structures and a transparent labyrinth which fill Plaza de Colón. A number of choirs, the Municipal Symphonic Band and various cycles organised in many of the city’s districts flood the capital with music. Like every year, the grand event is the Three Kings Parade that throughout the afternoon and evening of January 5 fills Paseo de la Castellana and Paseo de Recoletos with magic, hope and excitement.
