First immigrants under Federal Skilled Trades Program welcomed Canada’s Citizenship and Immigration Minister Chris Alexander recently officially welcomed one of the first permanent residents under the new Federal Skilled Trades Program: Eric Byrne, originally from Ireland. “Our Government remains focused on job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” said Alexander. “The new Federal Skilled Trades Program enables us to attract and retain skilled workers – like Eric – so we can address regional labour shortages and strengthen Canada’s economy. It gives me great pleasure to personally welcome one of Canada’s first successful immigrants through our Skilled Trades stream.” Eric Byrne received his Ontario trades certificate of qualification in May 2012 and currently works as a plumber for University Plumbing and Heating. He first arrived in Canada through the International Experience Canada program, which provides opportunities for international youth between the ages of 18 and 35 to travel and work in Canada. “Canada is a great country and the people here have been exceptionally warm and welcoming,” said Eric Byrne. “I am very pleased that I qualified for the Federal Skilled Trades Program as it recognizes the value of my skill set and has allowed me to stay in Canada and integrate seamlessly into my new status as a permanent resident.”
Also recently in Calgary, Employment and Social Development Minister Jason Kenney welcomed another successful applicant of the Federal Skilled Trades Program. New permanent resident Paul Lyttle has been working as an electrician for Calgary-based Unitech Electrical Contracting Inc. since June 2012.
“The new Federal Skilled Trades Program is a significant improvement to Canada’s immigration system which, for too long, had not been open to in-demand skilled workers,” said Kenney. “Immigrants like Paul are set for success and I am pleased that this new Program will enable him, and others like him,
to contribute skills to our economy on a permanent basis.” “Relocating to Canada was the right decision for me, both personally and professionally,” said Paul Lyttle. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to stay here in Canada permanently and can now start making long-term plans.” To date, successful applicants under the Federal Skilled Trades Program have originated from different countries including India, Lithuania, Latvia and Germany, in addition to Ireland. The Government of Canada launched the Federal Skilled Trades Program in January 2013 to facilitate the immigration of skilled tradespeople who meet Canada’s current and evolving economic needs. Skilled tradespeople are assessed on relevant criteria, such as language ability, practical training and work experience rather than formal academic education. The Program was also created in response to requests from Canadian employers for skilled workers to fill labour shortages, particularly in the natural resources and construction sectors. In order to attract and retain qualified, in-demand candidates, the goal is to process applications as quickly as possible. Eric Byrne’s application was processed in only three months, while Paul Lyttle’s was finalized in four months. ●

Canada’s next top markets: beyond the obvious Several markets in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa are new “sweet spots” for Canadian firms seeking to grow their trade and investment opportunities, according to a Conference Board of Canada report, “Canada’s Next Top Markets.” “Markets that traditionally fly under the radar should not be under-estimated,” said Danielle Goldfarb, Associate Director of the Conference Board’s Global Commerce Centre. “They may not be as well known as powerhouses like China, India and Brazil — which, in addition to traditional markets like
the US, will remain the most important future markets for Canada. But the economies in these other countries are growing rapidly, and Canadian companies can capitalize on the fact that we already have a business presence in many of them.” For example, Southeast Asia — or the ASEAN economic region — consists of countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam. Collectively, the ASEAN economic region has the ninth largest economy in the world, larger than both India and Russia. Its population is twice that
of the United States. And its economies are growing rapidly. At six per cent annually (inflation-adjusted) over the period of 2006 to 2011, economic growth in Southeast Asia far exceeded that of Canada’s more traditional trade partners. Yet, Canadians have failed to give the region much attention. Two-way trade with Southeast Asia represents only one per cent of Canada’s exports and two per cent of imports. This represents a starting point to build upon. To some degree, it is unsurprising that Canadian businesses have shied away from
Southeast Asia. Not only is it geographically distant, the business environment — openness to trade, tariff and investment barriers, non-tariff barriers such as regulatory restrictions, and quality of infrastructure — can be difficult, and varies from country to country. “Canada’s Next Top Markets” identifies 24 non-traditional markets for Canada that are likeliest to represent the most important future economic potential for Canada. To make the list, countries had to represent both economic growth potential and at least some Canadian business potential. ●

Canadians coast to coast making effort to buy local
Supporting the local economy and regional jobs are two top reasons people go local Supporting the regional economy, farmers and jobs, along with fresh food and taste, all trump the cost of food for people choosing to buy local, according to the third annual BMO Food Survey. The report also revealed what products Canadians buy locally and why, and showed differences across the provinces on a variety of foods. The top reasons Canadians buy local, include: • The food is fresh and tastes better (97 per cent). • It supports the local economy (97 per cent). • It supports local farmers (96 per cent). • It creates local jobs (93 per cent). • It’s better for the environment (88 per cent). • It offers the opportunity to buy organic produce (76 per cent). • It is less expensive (71 per cent). “We’ve seen from doing this study the last three years that Canadians are unwavering in their support for local farmers. An overwhelming majority have told us that they recognize the important contribution of agriculture producers to local economy and creating jobs,” said David Rinneard, Director, Agriculture and Agribusiness, BMO Bank of Montreal. “Canada’s agriculture industry is a major driver in Canada’s economy. We will continue to work with our clients in the sector to find news way to increase productivity and remain globally competitive.”
The research found that Canadians seek to buy locally grown vegetables more than other products. Plus, while there are distinct regional differences, the “locovore” movement is happening across Canada. Albertans buy local beef more often, while Ontarians are supporting a growing wine industry by buying local wine 40 per cent of the time. Residents in B.C. and Ontario tend to buy locally grown fruit more than shoppers in other provinces. Atlantic Canadians are most likely to buy local fish, and Quebec residents are most likely to purchase locallymade cheese. “Canadian farmers have benefited from increased demand and higher prices after U.S. crop yields were depressed by last summer’s drought in the Midwest,” said Aaron Goertzen, Economist, BMO Capital Markets. “Increased supply following this summer’s harvest - as U.S. farmers get back on track will likely mean lower prices for Canadian farmers, but means North American consumers should also see lower prices at the grocery store.” The results cited in this report come from an online survey fielded by Pollara between June 14th and June 17th with a sample of 1,000 Canadians. Overall results for a probability sample of this size would be accurate to +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. ●
