In this role, she focuses on how the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) policies get implemented in the field and how African AIDS programs are supported. Albertini has seven years of experience working in the field in Africa, first in Zambia and then in Swaziland. In the Zambia, she was the point-of-contact for male circumcision activities for PEPFAR. Ismael Loera Fernandez 13C has been chosen as one of 30 recipients of the 2015 Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, the premier graduate school fellowship for immigrants and children of

Loera Fernandez, who double majored in chemistry and economics at Emory, is pursuing a PhD in chemistry at Rice University in Houston where the Soros Fellowship will support his postgraduate research on synthesizing bismuth carboxylate complexes, which have antibacterial and antiparasitic applications. Loera Fernandez came to the United States at age eleven when his parents made the difficult decision to leave their lives and family in Mexico to try to provide a better life for their family. While at Emory, Loera Fernandez’s status as an undocumented immigrant changed when he became a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), allowing him to apply to graduate school. His senior thesis at Emory on using the research of Emory faculty to teach chemistry undergraduates earned him magna cum laude honors.
