Our story Okusha is a proudly African, female-owned jewellery and accessory collective based in Cape Town, South Africa. Okusha wearable art pieces are handcrafted using socially responsible practices and sustainable, environmentally conscious materials. Modern styles combined with traditional skills embrace African design and celebrate vibrant African glamour. Okusha’s bold, colourful and unique jewellery is made from recycled materials and elevated with brass, silver and gold metals.
Uplift, Upskill, Upcycle Okusha is a gift. A gift to yourself, someone special, to the environment and the community. Every touchpoint is carefully considered and the purchase of an Okusha piece means the support of earth-friendly materials, practices that are fair to its female creators. Founders and mothers Amy Kropman and Joani Groenewald, a small business owner and jewellery designer respectively, joined forces in 2020 to establish Okusha. Okusha aims to empower African women by putting a spotlight on the power that the unique African aesthetic brings to the design world both at home and globally. Social and environmental consciousness is at our core. We strive to create jewellery that is sustainable, uplifts its makers and empowers women. We choose to work with partners and source materials that are as kind to people and the environment as possible. Bold and colourful elements are made from recycled flip flops. Luxe additions are done by ha n d u si n g ea r th - c on s c iou s meta ls by local craftswomen and jewellers in a way that is sensitive to the origin of the materials and elevates the vibrant African aesthetic of each piece. Okusha gives women a seat at the table through design, driving the change of desirable fashion from Eurocentric to proudly, boldly, uniquely African.
Sustainability Our commitment to sustainability lies in the selection of our materials and how we make each piece. We ensure that only metals sourced through reputable ethical and sustainable suppliers are used in our jewellery. Machine cut, ethically mined gemstones from fairtrade suppliers are used whenever we can. We also consider the environment by avoiding the unnecessary use of plastics where possible. The central component of our product is made from fair trade, recycled flip flop material. This way we attempt to reappropriate some of the plastic waste polluting our planet. We pay fair wages to our workers and craftspeople and give back by empowering women through our business. Sustainability is a journey. We are constantly trying to be better and do better when it comes to sustainability in our business. While we can’t promise flawless sustainable practices, we can promise we will always choose the options that are kindest to people and the earth as much as we are able.
