What is 100? Brief

You are required to interpret the number 100. Widely available research resources offer you reference and data that offer a broad spectrum of opportunities. Content could be educational, explanations of events, historical or social discoveries or developments, sporting records or achievements. We want to see an innovative idea that not only intrigues us but also informs us. Choose a format that is appropriate for your subject matter and your target market. You could create a timeline in a broadsheet, a time-based piece, a website, a series of booklets/leaflets, a partwork or a complete publication containing all the content.

The main criteron is that your design should reflect the significance of the number 100 and that you express clear typographic control of the navigation of the information content. Target Market Define your market, and how you will target it, in your Strategy. Requirements • Research and Development • Strategy • Specifications/Grid(s) • Dummy/Prototype(s) • Presentation

The concept of this project is to represent ‘100’ in a typographic manner. My interpretation of this was initially as a number, but also the meaning it may have to me and other people. At the start of the project it was rather difficult to think of the best way to represent ‘100’. I thought about it as a number, a unit, quantity, age, distance and the use of it within society.

I started with a brainstorm and then moved onto looking into the definition of the word. The definition helped me to get started. It was interesting to see what the World Wide Web and dictionaries said. The dictionary keeps it simple and the web brings related facts as the answer.

One of the first ideas that was looked into was to take the top one hundreds of... -

Music Films Events in History Typefaces People in History Food

As well as looking on the internet I would also go around and ask people what was their top music or typeface. Best way to gather this information would be to set up a questionnaire or survey as well as going into the street and asking.

This would have been an interesting idea to do, however, the link to ‘100’ wasn’t very strong and the typographic element wasn’t key at all. I enjoyed doing the research for this. It was interesting to see how much influence people have over the charts and people in history. There were so many different opinions represented.

This idea was about looking into days in history. This is linked to the previous idea but with this idea It’s bringing the typographic element back into it by using the old newspapers that have recorded these events. There have been hundreds of days in history everyday something happens around the world but how do you select ‘100’ of them. There are a number of categories that could be considered and here are some of them: -

Famous people Events Births Deaths Tragedies Achievements

The typographic research would be to collect images and photocopies of old newspapers and anaylise the use of typography and the grids used and compare them to newspapers now.

It is rather difficult to narrow it down to a particular area but asking people as well as looking at what newspapers say would be the way to collect it. I think in hindsight this one would have been a nice typographic outcome. However it isn’t a great focus on ‘100’.

Another idea that was more focused on the ‘100’ brief was this idea of collecting one hundred images of type used within society. I would pick a letter and go into London or my local area and take images of different typographic elements within society. To make this more interesting I would have to break down the analysis process into different areas. The area’s would be:

The aim of this idea is to look at the use of typography within different cultures. This would be an interesting break down and collection of type and the use of letters.

Things Fonts Colours Shapes Why the letter is being used

I enjoyed doing the research for this idea. Not until you stop and look, do you realise how many different fonts are used around us everyday. There are so many that it’s interesting to think that designers work so hard to use the right font for a piece of design and then it gets put next to a font which the designer was trying to avoid. It’s made me think more about my set of fonts.

I would look at the way that the words are written and spoken. Typographically these words could be great visually. Comparing other languages and the meaning of the words would be interesting.

This idea didn’t really go any further than this; it wasn’t one of the strong ones, however typographically it may have been really visual. I think it didn’t go any further due to the lack of ‘100’. I could have picked 100 languages or looked at the word ‘one hundred’ in different languages to link it back to the ‘100’ brief. I learnt more about different languages doing the research for this that was a plus.

Idea 6

Distances

Measurement This is an idea to take the unit ‘100’ and convert it into different weights, mass, volume, and quantity. I could also compare 100 sweets to 100 liters. Looking at the difference of the units would be interesting. I could use lots of examples to compare.

After looking at the use of ‘100’ within society and it as an amount, I started to think about the use of it within units, distance, measurements, etc. This made me think about the use of ‘100’ within our surroundings.

Firstly I’m looking at ‘100’ in miles. I will have a central point and then go 100 miles away from the central point in 360°. I would then gather the information of what is at that specific point. I could also use another unit such as 100secs by driving.

These ideas are good and have the 100 theme strongly in them but they are not very interesting and typographic. I will think more about incorporating the 100 and typographic elements together. I didn’t love this idea, which is why it didn’t go any further.

100 litres of water

Once again this is an interesting idea and would be fun to do all the measurements and comparing different masses. However, it does link to the ‘100’ brief, but it isn’t very typographic and I don’t think it would be something that would entice the judges to want to look at it. At that point I needed to go back and look at the ideas that I have come up with and see if any of them can be changed.

Idea 7 What does ‘100’ mean to you? All of these had interesting ideas and outcomes attached to them, however most of my ideas didn’t best meet the brief. At this point I went right back to the beginning and set up a facebook group that was sent to everyone on my friends list and people they knew.

The question was ‘What does 100 mean to you?’. This was a great way to gather some primary research, which in turn helped me to think more about ‘100’. I collected all the words that people on facebook had written and went through them.

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=266661897592

The image to the right is an idea I had to show the information gathered from the people. The idea is to create a paper chain of the peoples suggestions of what ‘100’ means. The heads would be their profile picture. I really liked this idea and for an information piece it would be great but maybe not so good for a typographic piece.

Here are a just few of the suggestions made by the 79, and growing members that responded on the group. There were so many different ideas and suggestions; it was really interesting to read them all. There were many members that wrote on the wall from around the world, which was really great.

After collecting all the suggestions I put them through Wordle to give me the most common words.

This was really interesting to look at some of the big key words are related to units and achievements.

I really enjoyed setting up this group and was shocked by the amount of people that joined and responded. Members also sent the invitation to people they knew which was great. I loved the diversity of the people and their answers. In hindsight this would have been a nice piece to do and at the beginning it was the front runner but it didn’t have a strong typographic link.

The Wordle was insightful some of the most used words, where words I didn’t think would be used that much.

Interesting Facts

Scrabble

The question ‘What does 100 mean to you?’ got me thinking about what other things are involved with ‘100’. This was a great way to gather some primary research, which in turn helped me to think more about ‘100’. I collected all the words that people on facebook had written and went through them.

I searched on the Internet seeing what dictionary’s and encyclopedias had to say about ‘100’. The internet was useful, on many websites there were really random facts that involved ‘100’. Such facts like, there are 100 tiles in the game of scrabble and there are 100 senators in the United States.

This was really interesting, finding different facts that had ‘100’ involved in them. The scrabble one jumped out at me, due to the fact that it was typographical and I thought that I could play around with the letter and make a nice typographic piece.

I really liked the idea of the scrabble tiles and the link to typography was strong too. I started to play around with formats and context. I got some great ideas that looked at the point system of the letters and words in other languages that mean 100. I did a lot of research on the game of scrabble, there was a lot of information on the internet about the game and the use of the tiles. I have never been very good at the game. There are a lot of big scoring words. To link this idea even more I tried to find a word that on its own would

score 100 points. This was very hard and in the end I couldn’t find one. The points also include the squares on the board that have double, triple letters and double and triple word square. I did find a couple of games on the internet where people had achieved an overall score and won with 100 points, that however wasn’t very interesting.

Once I started looking at the scrabble tiles and board there was only really a slight link with ‘100’, the tiles. I liked the idea with the type but not sure what I could do with it. I wanted to do more research with this before I gave up and used another idea. I liked the idea of the points.

Scrabble Point system

Idea for the points

Looking at the point system there is some really interesting facts found out. A lot of the vowels have many titles but not very high points scoring. The high scoring point tiles are tiles that are harder to use, they are letters such as Q, Z, X.

link to ‘100’ apart from the fact that there is one hundred scrabble tiles. I then started to look at the letters and words that are linked to ‘100’. As shown below I looked at what different words representing one hundred would score in a game of scrabble.

I started to think about the use of the points and the link to ‘100’. It was rather difficult to find a strong

This was really interesting, when I added up all the points for words linked to Hundred they all came to the same total points.

This took a long time, sorting out all the points and how many tiles there where for each letter. It was intriguing to find out things that I didn’t know before, such as that ‘E’ was the most used letter. There were 12 of them. I struggled to find a word that added up to 100pt and so that idea was scrapped.

An idea that I thought could work with the scrabble idea was to create booklets for each letter that contained the highest scoring words. I would use the shape of the scrabble tile and have the board as the background image; there would also be a definition of the words underneath so shown above.

Acknowledgement (28pt) - recognition of the existence or truth of something Applejacks (27pt) - an alcoholic beverage consisting of the unfrozen liquid that remains after freezing fermented cider. Anthraquinone (25pt) - a yellow, water-insoluble, crystalline powder, C14H8O2, usually derived from anthracene or phthalic anhydride: used chiefly in the manufacture of anthraquinone dyes.

This idea was nice to design and had the scrabble element, however typographically it wasn’t very interesting, it didn’t have the wow factor. I produce the letters A,B,C,D, to show the tutor’s and they liked the booklets but the concept wasn’t very strong.

I enjoyed creating the booklets, getting the right colours and fonts that are used within the scrabble tiles was a challenge but an insightful one. There also isn’t, to my knowledge any books that have the points in them, I have a scrabble dictionary but that just has the words in, not the points. Sadly this idea was not very strong so I tried one more idea using the scrabble.

Scrabble Other Languages My last attempt at making the scrabble work was to look at the spellings of the word ‘Hundred’ in different languages and using them on the scrabble board. This was interesting to learn the new words and see that in English ‘hundred’ is 7 letters and in other languages on average its 4 letters. The points were low with most of the words too.

Cem = Portuguese Cien = Spanish Cent = French Sto = Polish Sute = Romanian Sata = Finnish Hundred = English Hundert = German

Typographically which was the main reason for trying this idea out, it wasn’t very exciting. This idea, I think, was my last attempt to try and make the scrabble tiles work. I needed to go back and have a look at everything I had collected.

Final Idea Interesting Facts Going back to the list of interesting facts that the scrabble idea had generated from, made me think about what all the facts had in common and that was the strong link to ‘100’. I wondered how many facts actually contained ‘100’ within them. After a lot of research and many discussions with my tutors, we decided to continue with this idea. Finally I had found my final focus, which was informing people where 100 exists in everyday life.

I searched all over the internet, I spent many hours trying to collect as many facts as I could. I had to use different ways of wording it, such as 100, one hundred, hundred, this was to gain more. Whilst collecting them I realised that I would have to be more specific that just facts that had ‘100’ in them. There were a few that used word such as, about, nearly, on average. These were good facts but not specifically one hundred. This narrowed down what I had found and it made it harder but I found enough.

The thing that fascinated me during this project was the interesting use of ‘100’ in everyday life. When I told people some of the facts they were really interested by them and wanted to know more. After talking to the tutor’s about this idea I then had to think about the best way to represent them.

New Zealand’s favourite appliance store is called 100%. It takes 100 chinchilla’s for a fur coat. Sharks can live to 100 years. Americans collectively eat one hundred pounds of chocolate every second. Type as images

I started to think about the best way to represent the information. This was slightly difficult, I had to remember that it was a typographic competition and that occasionally slipped my mind. I started think about using the shapes of the facts content to represent them using little booklets shaped as, for example, a pen or cup of coffee or balloon. These would contain the fact inside them.

Human lungs are 100 times easier to inflate than balloons.

It would take 100 cups of coffee consumed in 4 hours to kill the average adult with a caffeine overdose.

Another idea that I thought about was putting the information on a beer mat, so that they could be used in pubs and during pub quizzes.

Human lungs are 100 times easier to inflate than balloons. It would take 100 cups of coffee consumed in 4 hours to kill the average adult with a caffeine overdose.

These were good ideas, however after discussions with my tutor’s we decided that they needed to be a little more about the type than the format or facts. I started to look at the type and what I could do with the fact to make it interesting. I looked at a number of design books that dealt with type and thought about manipulating the type to represent the movement or action within the fact.

I started to play with the type. This was fun, it took along time but I had to think creatively. Some of the facts where easy, if they had an action or movement within them, then they were easier to represent. Others were not so easy, such as ‘Sharks can live to 100 years old’.

The tutor’s and I spoke about making the size of the work area to add up to 100, hence the 10x10cm square. This was a nice working space, a little small but usable. I enjoyed playing with the type; I had to use all my software knowledge to play with the type. I felt that they needed something more and I tried some other ideas using type and image.

This was good fun; I struggled but found ways around the problems. I think I could have done more with this idea; it may have been more typographically appealing. I learnt more about manipulating type which is one of many things that I gained from this project.

Use of colour and illustrations

Categories - Food

When printed out there is a transparent sheet over the image with the text on.

This was interesting as well as difficult, however there were more facts containing 100 than I thought. I had collected quiet a number of facts and needed to organise them into categories to make more sense of them. I split the facts into ten categories and these were:

Every year, 100 men are diagnosed with breast cancer

-

Food Past Units Random Animal

-

This made it much easier to work with, however it was hard to find ten facts for each category; some categories had more in them than others. Below is an example of the food category. I also tried to introduce colour into the type. I especially like the use of colour in the Jellybeans.

Music Sport Entertainment 100 Years Humanity

This was another idea that I tried out. I kept the fact as a sentence and created an image to represent the fact, rather than before, where I used the type itself. I also suggested and made examples of these with tracing paper over the image. The fact would be written on the tracing paper and the image, (colour or not) would be on a nice textured paper. I did try the use of colour. I think it worked for the one above but didn’t necessary need to be used. The tutor’s liked this idea but not as much as the previous one. After looking at the facts and the manipulation of the type, I realised that I would have to organise them into categories, so that they would be easier to work with as well as look better. The tutor’s and I decided to find one hundred facts.

Sorting them into categories was a really good idea, this allowed me to know what categories didn’t have enough facts in and I had to search even harder to find the facts. I’m pleased with my self, as I found ten facts for each category. However in the end not all one hundred facts were used.

Research Information advertising Another area that I had to keep in mind during the project is the typographic element. Interpreting the facts in a typographical manner, rather than just a typed sentence was the aim. It needed to have some dimension to it, making it fun and interactive to a certain limit. I looked into a number of different ways to structure the design of the outcome. I had to think about the use of facts and the interpretation of how facts are used to inform the public. A common way that facts and information are provided for the public is in books or posters, postcards and beer mats.

There is a big difference between them all but they are current ways to inform the public. The book is aimed at people that go looking for information and the posters are aimed at walkers by, beer mats are aimed at students and people that use pubs. The postcards are funny and you can send them to people. It’s a quick intake of information. Keeping it interesting and consistent was something really important for me. I looked into playing with the type as images and colour as well. Finally after a lot of playing around with these ideas, I decided to create a poster that had one category on each, which resulted with 10 posters.

Government Posters

Beer Mats

This was a good way to understand my target audience and know what other people have designed for informing the public. I helped me to think about where my project needed to go. Looking back at it know, I think that producing beer mats may have been a more appealing outcome than posters in the end.

Research Typographic Images Bruno Monguzzi

As well as looking at pieces of design that are aimed at the public to inform them of something, I also looked at the manipulation of type itself. This helped me think about what other people had created and the ways that the manipulated the type.

I looked in a number of books, on the internet and at posters that typographic designers have designed. This was really interesting for me; I like typography and the way that it can influence the people viewing it. Also it is important to note the use of colour.

Looking back at these posters I feel that my final outcomes could have been more typographic and more manipulated. I could have played around with the size, font and positions of the type. These are more along the lines of what the client wanted I feel.

Final Ideas Ideas During some research where I was looking at type, I found a typographer called David Jury; he had produced a piece called ‘In Darkest England’ that really inspired me and the use of sentences going through large letters. This gave me an idea that I could pick a specific letter that represents each category and use it with the facts. I really liked this idea and produced some example of how the type could be played with.

David Jury In Darkest England 1997

I think these pieces looked more typographic than my last piece. Maybe the client would have preferred these. There is something about them, now looking back at, which is nice. I carried on with keeping the focus on a letter and used it in a different way. I changed the focus by using the facts to create the letter.

Final Ideas Analysis After looking at David Jury’s work I continued the use of the letter, however I created out of the facts. I manipulated the sentences to curve and follow the lines created by the letter. I enjoyed learning how to create this within the software. I kept a small strong letter on the

posters to show the letter that the facts were creating and also for another typographic element. The tutor’s liked these ideas and there were certain features that they like the most and were kept throughout the posters.

This needed to be worked on. There needed to be a title but this one needed work doing to it. Maybe bring in the ‘100’ element.

The tutor’s liked this element, it needed a little work to the fanes of the type.

The tutor’s liked this element too. The positioning of the letter needs to be thought about more.

There is too much white space within this poster there needs to be something linked to the category.

This was a good start and had nice features but did need to be worked on. Talking to the tutor’s really helped with the next step to bring more out of the type. For example, the details of where the type is being used and how it was being used.

Final Ideas Type and Logo Selecting the right type was hard, to get the information across in a simple and readable manner was the aim. I decided to chose Bell MT as my Serif font and New Gothic MT was a San Serif, used as a contrast. I used mainly these two fonts to keep it consistent, the weights and points change through out the posters but they stay the same fonts. There are couple of other fonts used within the poster, these are Times and Tahoma, these fonts were used for individual letters within the posters.

The other area that I needed to think about was the logo at the top of the page; this was there to inform the viewer of what category they are looking at. There were a number of ideas for this and they contained the element of ‘100’. Below to the right is the chosen logo that went on all the posters, each category change. Final Ideas Details There were a number of areas that had a lot of white space. The tutor’s and I decided that there needed to be something in the space that was linked to the facts and the ‘100’. For the bottom right corner I created an image out of type using ‘100’s. These had a corresponding fact that went with them.

Here are some examples of type being used as an image to resemble something. I really like these.

Living to

The past is surrounded by numbers and facts but do you know the facts that are involved with

These were introductions into the category, they explained what the poster was about in a typographic way. They also correspond with the category. There is type on a stave and type on plates for food.

I really like the images that I created out of the ‘100’. They were good fun to create and once again I learnt a new skill in the software I was using. They work being large as well as small, which was a bonus. They were hard to think about, the music and food were easier where as the humanity and centenarian was harder.

Final Ideas Further Ideas I started to work with the page and the ideas that I had come up with. The use of the images created out of the ‘100’s started me thinking about where else I could use the images and have less white space. I used images that were linked to the category and I started linking the ‘100’ images in the bottom right corner with the large image. For example the music poster had a Stave as the large image and a music note and the smaller image. They went together. The sports category had a running track as the larger image and a man running as the smaller image. These worked well but I felt that the posters them became crowded. They needed something but not the images.

I liked the large images and they took a long time to create, however, they did make the whole page cluttered, as well as that it wasn’t heavy in type which is should have been, so I made the decision to get rid of the large images, I kept the smaller images, they were subtle.

Here are some examples of type being used to create a letter. The use of letters is really nicely executed it provides a strong shape.

Final Outcome Posters These posters went through a number of different designs, all typographical but there were certain elements that didn’t work together. Once I took details that I liked from the previous ideas, I put them together and this created an interesting typographic piece. One of the key aspects to the posters is the strong introduction of

information in a subtle way; these are carried out all over the pages. These individual components bring a subtle link to each other but also the category that they are representing. There is a fine use of imagery, however it has been created out of type. The use of ‘100’ is used to create a shadow of an image related to the category,

I struggled with the choice of colour, I had to have a number of discussions with my tutor’s and fellow students on which colours to use. The large letter had started to work at this stage, it needed something else and the colour was the answer in the end.

for example, Animals has a mouse, Food has a pizza and so on, these are shown in the bottom right hand corner of the posters as well as on the supportive sleeves. With these images the use of colour was introduced, I found it hard to chose the right colours, I didn’t want to just use colour, it needed to have a reason for being there.

Final Outcome Colour The use of colour was introduced near the end of my research and ideas making. The posters felt like they needed something else to finish them off. The colours used were chosen specifically for the categories. It took a number of conversations with a range of people to come to the final colours. They couldn’t be to strong, so that

the type would be lost but not too subtle that the colour couldn’t be seen. The stock used for the posters was provided by the printers. One of the down sides to printing as large as A2 is that many printers only print on the paper that they provide, which normally is as a roll. I was happy with this; the paper was a nice quality and thick enough.

Music - Blue

Random - Pink

Sport - Green

Humanity - Peach

Units - Grey

Food - Terracotta

Centarian - Tinted Grey

Animals - Khaki Green

(earthy tone)

Entertainment -Light Blue (Playful)

Choosing the colours was a long decision. It took a lot of talks with different people and in the end we all got together and used colours that we felt represented the category. This was interesting as some people had the same ideas and others imagined completely different colours. Overall I’m really happy with the colours that were finally chosen.

Past - Brown

Final Outcome Posters After all the changes and so many different ideas at the start, I ended up with ten A2 posters that I was very happy with. They were fun and playful with the use of colour and manipulation of type. The letters show up strong with a use of different fonts and weights as well as different colours. The smaller images were subtle and added that extra something to the poster.

Final Outcome Packaging To add another element to my final outcome, I have decided to fold them into a A4 and have a supportive sleeve around half of the A4 to contain them. Then they have been placed into a folded case. The A4 sleeve was also produced at a printers and I used the paper that they provided for their printers. The case, however was created by my self and I used paper that I bought at a art suppliers.

The packaging overall was a learning experience for me, It made me realise that you may have big ideas in your head or drawn out but once you have to actually have to print the outcome and put it onto paper you then have to start thinking about the logistics. The container that, in the end, I had to produce, caused a number of problems, I thought that I could buy one but I couldn’t find an example of one to the size I wanted and so I had to create it myself.

This was a really difficult part of the whole project, deciding on how it was going to be presented was hard, also how to produce the packaging was a challenge, which was overcome and I’m really happy and pleased with the final outcome. All the areas work well together. At one point I was going to have the posters as posters but they defiantly needed something else and the slipcase and box was the right decision.

This is an example of the sleeve that the folded poster slipped into. The only part of the poster you could see was the logo and the introduction. The small image was placed onto the slipcase to add more detail.

Final Outcome Evaluation Overall this has been a really interesting project and process for me. Over the last couple of months I have learnt the importance of research and understanding the concept, context and the target audience. They are the main reason that projects like this are created and understanding that has been my final and main outcome. I am pleased with the way that I have worked with the type and the subtleties that have been created to connect them all together. I feel that I have taken an area within ‘100’ that wasn’t obvious but ended up interesting to the audience.
