From the Chair

Your Leadership gift is working to create opportunities for a better life for all in our community by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life—quality educational opportunities, stable jobs, financial stability, and good health. United Way is able to create long-lasting change that address the underlying causes of community challeges. I give to United Way of Eastern Maine because I believe in what they do and I know my donation will make the greatest difference. That’s why I support United Way. Please join me with a 2009 Leaders’ Circle gift. Thank you.

Leadership Giving Leaders’ Circle members are United Way of Eastern Maine’s most generous supporters and help us create lasting change in the community. Through Leadership Gifts of $1,000 or more, these donors set an example for others, enjoy a range of benefits and make a measurable difference in our community. We invite you to join them.

Why be a Leadership Giver? Personal satisfaction – knowing you are investing in long-term solutions. Leading by example – inspiring others to invest in our community through United Way. Impact – by donating to our Community Fund, your gift takes on greater value by combining contributions with others to produce lasting change, right where you live. Accountability – knowing we have three volunteer Community Impact Councils reviewing applications and making funding recommendations on programs and initiatives that generate measureable results. Our experience tells us that the best way to help the most people is to focus on the underlying causes of the most serious problems. Here in Eastern Maine, we are focused on critical issues such as early childhood education, caring for our elderly population and helping people in crisis.

This year I’m proud to be joining the Leaders’ Circle Committee as Co-Chair. I am also challenging you to LIVE UNITED. What does it mean to LIVE UNITED? It means that as a group of leaders we recognize that underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all simply people. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. Join me today as a Leaders’ Circle donor, your gift will strengthen our community and contribute to a better quality of life for everyone. I think LIVING UNITED sound amazing!

This major gifts and recognition program was nationally initiated in 1984 to deepen and strengthen the understanding, commitment and support of philanthropic individuals to their local United Ways. Membership in the Society is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually to United Way of Eastern Maine. Nationwide, over 20,000 members donate more than $400 million through 398 societies.

Pinnacle Club Individuals who contribute $2,500 or more are recognized for their exceptional generosity and truly are Champions of Giving and lead the way with their gifts and longevity of their commitment.

Patron - $2,500-$4,999 Benefactor - $5,000 - $9,999 Benefits of Pinnacle Club membership include: • Local recognition for your philanthropic contributions in this Leaders’ Circle book. • Updates on the work of United Way and the results of your investment. • Volunteer opportunities and training for those serving on volunteer councils or board of directors. • Invitations to social, educational and networking events. Pinnacle Club members will be invited to attend the WLBZ’s “2 Those Who Care Awards” • Eligibility to win exciting incentives, including a car donated by Darling’s for the 2009 campaign.

Working Together

It takes all of us working together to reach our goals in the following areas, so we bring people together from all across the community. Together, we can accomplish more than any of us could alone, but it takes all of us working together to create a brighter future. Our goal is long-lasting change that prevents problems from happening in the first place. At United Way of Eastern Maine, with the guidance of our volunteer councils, our work is focused on the critical issues of:

Strengthening Children and Families • Enhancing children’s school readiness through quality childcare and development services. • Helping families build parenting skills. • Expanding youth development to build self-confidence and high aspirations.

Supporting Seniors • Keeping seniors active and engaged in their community. • Maintaining seniors’ independence at home. • Supporting families in caring for their aging loved ones.

Meeting Basic Needs and Promoting Self-Sufficiency • Helping people in crisis and giving them hope and opportunity for the future. • Providing people in need with the tools, skills and support to attain self-sufficiency.

Together We Can Accomplish Anything

How will United Way of Eastern Maine invest my gift to the Community Fund? We will continue to provide support for the basic needs and treatment of the most vulnerable among us, and work hard to impact the root causes of our community’s most pressing issues, preventing problems before they begin.

To look at it another way… We will strive to provide the basic things that all people need to have a good life. We will help our children reach their full potential, ensure the resources are there to support our families and make healthy choices in our lives. We will advance education, income and health and create opportunities for a better life for all.

Advancing the common Good

community partnerships that advance

the common Good excellent mental and social stimulation to family members with memory loss. My Friends Place has helped Jill to keep her father Laurent active and socially stimulated at a difficult time in their lives. Laurent’s family noticed he was experiencing memory loss about 10 years ago and sought services in their community to keep their father healthy. Jill has expressed great appreciation for My Friends Place, a day program for individuals suffering from memory loss and Alzheimer’s. My Friend’s Place provides a safe place for caretakers to bring their loved ones for mental activities and social engagement.

A place for after school tutoring and mentoring while having fun. Kidcare America is an after-school program in Lincoln, Maine offering students social, mental and physical opportunities to grow and thrive. When Theresa came to Kidcare she was shy and uncertain of herself. Today, when friends and family describe Theresa you’ll hear “she is a very smart girl”, “now when she reads she can answer questions” and “she enjoys helping others”. Kidcare America aims to help children like Theresa grow to be strong adults and active citizens.

A safe environment for individuals with hiv to seek information and resources. Jean and her son Tim both have HIV. Throughout the last 17 years, Eastern Maine AIDS Network (EMAN) has helped them to be healthy contributing citizens of Eastern Maine. EMAN connected Pat and Jean with doctors to ensure healthy living with HIV. EMAN also provided supportive staff when the family needed someone to talk to about living with HIV. Pat, Jean and Tim have given back by volunteering to help with the student education group SAFER, serving on the board of directors, helping in the food pantry and walking in the annual AIDS Walk.
