Art and Design

About The Art department aims to develop both the skills of the students and their understanding of the breadth of the subject and contextual reference. Schemes of work lead students through the formal elements over Key Stage 3, where they gain a practical understanding of the subject and develop skills while conveying their ideas visually. Pupils explore visual, tactile and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. They work with traditional and new media, developing confidence, competence, imagination and creativity. They learn to appreciate and value images and artefacts across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. In Art, pupils reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists, craftspeople and designers, working creatively and intelligently. Throughout each unit of work students develop key skills in the formal elements of art and design. Through deeper understanding, students are empowered to develop and present their own work in a meaningful, purposeful way. Assessment Arrangements Over the course of one term, students produce a piece of course work (60% of the examination) bringing together a combination of skills and sit an examination when they have to draw from observation (40%). Work is marked according to how well students have fulfilled the brief and the level of skill demonstrated.
