May I Have a Word Please Mac has always been a great computer for beginners. Over the years Macs have become more complex, but I think they’ve retained the title of the best computer for newbies. What is it that makes them more suitable for beginners? I think it’s partly the same attention to detail that Apple clearly has when they put together their computers, accessories and software. They clearly care about the user experience, and that shows in everything they do. The Mac’s operating system has been well suited for beginners since it first came out in 1984, and this “ease of use” has continued with Mac OS X. Yes it’s obviously a much more complicated system than it was over twenty years ago: Back then there was no internet, no email, no DVD, no wifi, etc. But Apple has kept the focus on making their system easy to use, as well as being capable of handling complexity. A good example is the Terminal. With Terminal you have enormous power over every aspect of your Mac, but it’s complex beyond what most users want or could handle without training. Apple hides that complexity from users, but makes it available to those who would want to attempt it. In 2002 Apple Computer launched what was affectionately called the Switch campaign, featuring TV ads that showed users who had switched to Mac from Windows computers. Although it was a very memorable campaign, it wasn’t very effective and it only ran for about a year before being canceled. But the campaign gave birth to the switcher concept, which has long outlived the TV ads - and in recent years I think most of us have seen an increasing number of people switching from Windows to Mac. The reasons for their switching are many; ranging from wanting a more stable and secure computer experience to it being the cool thing to do (and everything in between). Whatever the reasons most Mac users realize that the more switchers there are, the better it is for us.

Confessions of a Mac Switcher by Brian (EmiratesMac)

I am now two months into my conversion as a Mac switcher, and in this article I hope to share some of the discoveries I’ve made regarding both iPhoto and the Dock. I’ll start first with the Dock, which essentially consists of a series of minimized icons sitting at the bottom of your desktop window, which act to provide a convenient shortcut to opening applications, documents and folders. A switcher must first understand that the Dock is divided into two parts: a left and right side, distinguished by a faint dotted line that sits between the application icons and the trash can. Applications sit on the left side of this dotted line, and new applications can be added permanently to the dock by simply dragging them from the Finder. So what goes on the right side of the Dock’s dotted line? The answer is folders called ‘Stacks’ and minimized windows of running applications. A ‘stack’ is a folder full of items that you’ve dragged into the dock, which can display in unique ways – i.e. individual files can be made to display as a grid, a fan, or as a list. One very nice feature of the Dock is that you can open documents by simply dragging a file onto an application’s icon. Although the above explanation of the Dock’s main functionality may appear obvious to a seasoned Mac user, it does

provide a challenge to a switcher, who is more familiar with working with applications and documents in Windows XP through the Taskbar. In Windows XP, application icons stored in the Taskbar are used solely for document launching purposes. Once an application is launched from the Start > Programs menu, taskbar buttons appear for each open document in that application. Once all the documents of a specific application are closed, the application quits. In this regard it can be claimed that the Windows Taskbar is “documentbased”, whereas the Mac OS X Dock is more “application-based”. For a switcher, the taskbar is sure to be missed, because it still makes a lot of sense. You can immediately see what applications and documents are currently running, whereas the Dock mixes applications that are running with applications that are launchable. Also, multiple instances of applications are instantly apparent in the Taskbar, but not in the Dock. Regardless of these different points of departure regarding design, the Dock and the Windows Taskbar equally achieve their designed purpose: to provide the user with an efficient (though quite different) method of working with applications and documents. Now let’s turn to iPhoto, the first of the iLife suite of applications that I’ve had a chance to use. It’s best to think of iPhoto

6 shuffle Middle East | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle@emiratesmac.com

as both a photo management and photo editing application. I would first warn any switcher that its usage is not very intuitive, and can be very frustrating if you attempt a trial-and-error approach to learning it. However, using a methodical approach is sure to yield quick mastery over its rich features. The iPhoto Help menu is a great place to begin such methodical training, as it presents information under categories of functionality (i.e. importing and organizing photos, viewing and editing images, and sharing photos electronically and in print). Video tutorials can also be accessed through this iPhoto Help menu. As an amateur photographer who deals mainly with holiday snapshots, I think iPhoto is great. To begin with, it offers the ability to preview thumbnails before selecting photos for import, and allows me the option of importing only those photos I have selected. Switchers should try not to get too bogged down over understanding the concept of “Events”. Basically, in an attempt to mimic the natural way we organize things in our lives (i.e. according to time or happenings), iPhoto auto-splits imported photos into the iPhoto library by date - depending on the preferences you’ve chosen. For example, if you imported wedding photos and birthday photos with the one-day event option selected in preferences, iPhoto would auto-split your

photos into two different events - because each event had occurred on two separate days. However, if you don’t like the results of this auto-splitting, you can easily unite images into one event by Command + clicking two or more events > Events Menu > Merge Events. You can also place chosen photos from one or more Events into a photo album. When you find you have too many albums, you can further organize these albums into folders so that the library source pane remains manageable. You may also create slideshows, books, calendars, and cards directly from your photos, without first creating an album. Switchers need to be aware that there are two types of slideshows: The first is a quick slideshow that offers parameters such as speed, image transition style, and the information to be displayed (e.g. title, date, etc.). The second is a slideshow project in which you can adjust the speed at which each individual image changes, apply a Ken Burns effect to each photo in the slideshow’s album, and adjust music settings. A word of warning

- make sure no images are selected when you click on a slideshow icon or you’ll end up with a one-image sideshow! One of the coolest things in iPhoto is the ability to export a slideshow to a Quicktime movie, which can then be burned to CD or DVD. All music and effects created within a slideshow project will also be exported along with the images as a Quicktime movie, which is a shareable format amongst both PC and Mac users. iPhoto also comes equipped with a good range of photo editing tools that allow you to carry out both basic and advanced modifications to photos. Basic photo modifications include such things as cropping, straightening, red-eye correction, retouching to remove blemishes etc. You also have the ability to apply and combine several effects to photos, and the “Revert to original” command enables you to go back to a photo’s original state at any time – freeing you to experiment. Advanced photo editing in iPhoto includes the ability to adjust levels and mid tones,

and to attempt to correct levels of exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, sharpness and noise. A great time saver you’ll appreciate is the ability to copy-paste image setting adjustments to other photos shot at the same time under similar lighting conditions. For the more advanced photographer requiring certain image functions beyond the scope of iPhoto, you can launch an external editor like Photoshop through iPhoto. However you must first set this up in your preferences. So there you have it. In two months I think I’ve come a long way as a switcher. I now have a reasonable understanding of the essential features and file structure of my Mac, and have learnt to use one of its most commonly-used iLife applications - iPhoto. In my next article I hope to share with you new discoveries regarding another iLife application - iMovie, and also to report my attempts at using Exposé and Spaces.

Fan from Saudi

Illustrator Tutorials

Hello, I’m a big Mac Fan from Saudi, and I want to say Thank You, to everyone that works on Shuffle. This magazine has become my must read each month. If there is one thing that I would like to ask for is more Arabic. This is so important and we should support it, if we do not support this, than who will? Again, thank you for all you do. -KA

I love the short Adobe tutorials included in each Shuffle issue, and make it a point to try them out – with great success so far, as the instructions are simple and the images you use make the creation process clear and understandable. If possible, I’d love to see more Illustrator tutorials in future issues of Shuffle. -NJ

Thank you KA. We’re very proud of the fact that we can send copies of Shuffle to Saudi Arabia every month and we start to see more feedback from readers there. We are also proud of the fact that we’ve manage to bring you an Arabic section in Shuffle since September 2007, and we look forward to readers such as yourself help support that effort by sending us articles that we can put in Shuffle. -Editor More iPod You should do more iPod stuff. -BE You know, I totally agree, BE. We should do more iPod stuff, as well as more AppleTV and iPhone stuff. We’ll try to incorporate more of that in future issues. -Editor

Thank you NJ. We think the Adobe tutorials are great too, and we hope to be able bring you many more of them. One thing we hope to do is widen the scope of the tutorials so they are not just on one application. So far most tutorials have been on Photoshop, but we want to try to cover all of the Creative Suite applications so look out for tutorials on Illustrator, Flash, InDesign, as well as DreamWeaver in the future. -Editor

We at Shuffle appreciate feedback from our readers. Send us your thoughts, suggestions, comments, complaints, or whatever else may be on your mind to shuffle@emiratesmac.com and it may appear in future issues of Shuffle.

This company’s bags are sold in every Mac store I have ever been in, including iStyle in Ibn Battuta. The bag seemed part of the Mac ethos and therefore seemed like the bag I should buy. I have since upgraded and replaced my Crumpler with a larger one. Crumpler bags are tough as old boots and large enough to carry everything you want, including the kitchen sink. Mac mini Saved by Wireless USB Adapter We have a Mac mini that’s been acting up a lot lately, especially with wireless network connection. It has been getting really poor wi-fi reception, usually only one dot in the Airport menu, whereas other Macs have been getting full reception. So I naturally figured there’s something up with the Airport, perhaps even something wrong with the hardware. After trying everything I could think of to diagnose the problem and fix it, I had an idea; why not get one of those little wi-fi things that connect to the computer via USB? So instead of bringing the Mac mini in for service I thought I’d try that first. I picked up a D-Link DWA-140 USB 802.11n adapter for AED220. It’s a small plastic thing that can either be plugged directly into the computer’s USB port, or it can be plugged in using a small extension cable. For one thing, this means you get an external wi-fi antennae which should mean improved network connections.

found a new network service. Just set that service up with the appropriate settings for your wi-fi network; usually this means leaving everything to DHCP. Then start the utility application, which the driver installer puts in the Applications folder. With it, you create a profile for your wi-fi network - like security, passwords, etc. Don’t forget to turn your Airport wi-fi off, and you should be able to get onto the internet with the D-Link adapter. The D-Link doesn’t work straight away with Mac OS X and you don’t get drivers on a CD in the box, but with the appropriate drivers downloaded from the Internet it works fine. Basically what you do is connect the USB adapter, install the driver can you download from http://

www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/ Macintosh.html, and reboot the Mac. After

rebooting, you open the Network Preference pane and Mac OS X should say it’s

With our Mac mini this works like a charm. The connection is really fast and it seems reliable as well. It’s now happily syncing with Apple TV, downloading podcasts and software updates, and more. Of course I don’t know whether I could have avoided paying the AED220 by fixing the mini myself, but that was a small price to pay to get a working mini. It may have been a simple thing to fix the mini’s wireless problems, but this way wasn’t very expensive and it works fine. As far as I’m concerned, problem solved.

Mac Models 101 MacBook Air

Selecting what Mac to buy can sometimes be daunting, especially if you’re new to Macs. Therefore we put together this short guide to the different models of Macintosh computers currently on offer from Apple. This guide only offers some brief pointers. To evaluate what you should buy, we advice you spend some time with the Mac in a store.

The MacBook Air is definitely the ultimate Mac in terms of portability. But even though it weighs in at about 1kg, it’s no lightweight in terms of performance. With a processor from 1.6GHz, 2GB RAM, and 80GB hard drive it should perform most tasks with east. An external SuperDrive is optional.Price: from AED8199.

MacBook The main attraction of the MacBook is obviously its size. It has a 13.3inch display which has enough resolution for most things (but is limited for tasks such as design), a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.2GHz, RAM up to 4GB, and a hard drive up to 250GB. The MacBook is a lot of power in a small package. If mobility is your primary concern, this is your choice. Price: from AED4999.

MacBook Pro For the technology you can find inside them, the MacBook Pros are surprisingly compact. But no one can say that the 17-inch model is light and easy to transport. The 15-inch model is slightly smaller, and both sport a gorgeous, large display. It has up to 2.6GHz Core2Duo processors, 4GB or RAM, and 250GB of hard drive. If its power and large screens you want, MacBook Pro is your choice. Price: from AED7999.

Mac mini The introductory model, petite as it is, still packs quite a punch. Don’t take its small size as a sign that it’s slow. It comes with a Core2Duo processor of up to 2.0GHz, which is plenty for most things you’d want to do. It can also take up to 2GB RAM and 160GB hard drive as well as a SuperDrive. Its limitation lies in that it’s very hard to upgrade, and it has integrated Intel graphics, so don’t expect to play the latest 3D games on a mini. Price: from AED2699.

iMac The ultimate home desktop computer, the iMac is the all-in-one that packs a punch. You can get a 20 or 24-inch screen, up to 3.06GHz, up to 4GB of RAM, and 1TB of hard drive. The iMac’s selling point is the integrated package, which also happens to look really awesome. Price: from AED6199.

Mac Pro For the ultimate in power and flexibility, you can’t beat Mac Pro but it’s not cheap. You can get it up to an eight-core configuration, 16GB RAM, four 750GB hard drives, and two optical drives. You also have a selection when it comes to graphics card. Price: from AED11999. iPod Models 101 As with buying a Mac, selecting what iPod to buy is not always easy. In every issue of Shuffle we present the current models of Apple’s iPods, what their main features are, and the starting price. Hopefully this can serve as a simple and quick guide to the iPods so you can make a more informed buying decision.

iPod Touch This is iPhone without the phone. You get wifi for web browsing with Safari, full-featured iPod of course for music and video, and the wonderful iPhone multitouch interface. Comes in 8GB and 16GB versions Price: from AED1399.

iPod Classic This is the iPod we have known and loved for so many years, hence the name Classic. With a large display, plenty of storage space, this is still the king of the iPods even though many new models have been released. Comes in versions of 80GB and 160GB and is available in silver and black. Price: from AED1199.

iPod Nano Available in different colors, the Nano is the ultimate fashion accessory. With a wonderfully crisp display it can play video and the small size means you can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. Comes in 4GB and 8GB versions in five different colors. Price: from AED649.

iPod Shuffle This miniscule iPod is different from the other iPods not just in terms of size and price but in the fact that it has no display. The idea is that you listen to music on the go and it shuffles through the songs. There’s even an handy feature in iTunes that will always put a different combination of songs on it when you sync. Price: AED329.

Apple TV Although it’s not an iPod we present it here as it seems Apple feels the Apple TV is in the same family. With 40GB or 160GB storage capacity, the Apple TV can take all your music, podcasts, and movies. The multimedia can be synchronized from one iTunes library on a Mac or PC, or streamed from up to five other computers. It’s the easiest way to get your multimedia content onto a TV. Price: from AED1399. All pictures ©Apple Inc.

Mac of the Month: iMac Performance

Display and Graphics

In the iMac sits a powerful Core 2 Duo processor, which runs at speeds ranging from 2.4GHz to 3.06GHz. It has 6MB shared L2 cache and a 1066MHz system bus, which only adds to the speed of this desktop computer. All this makes the iMac capable of tackling all but the most pressing tasks, including video editing, gaming, and more.

20-inch (1680×1050 pixels), 24-inch (1920×1200 pixels), from ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with 128MB video memory to Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB video memory. The iMac also has Mini-DVI output for connection to an external monitor or projector, and a built-in iSight camera.

Memory The iMac can accommodate up to 4GB of RAM, divided into two slots. For most users, starting with 2GB is a good recommendation and can be achieved using only one slot; so you can easily grow your memory later if you need to.

Communications Also in this respect the iMac is well equipped. It has the Airport Extreme 802.11n wireless networking we’ve come to expect in all Macs, as well as Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. And if that isn’t enough, you can always plug the iMac in to an Ethernet network.

14 shuffle Middle East | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle@emiratesmac.com

Storage In terms of storage, the iMac is well endowed with one hard drive containing space ranging from 250GB to 1TB. All iMac models have the same 8x double-layer SuperDrive, with which you can backup your valuable data.

Expandability The main drawback with the iMac is that you can’t really expand it internally, so expansion will have to be done on the outside instead. Fortunately this can easily be done using the Firewire 400 port or the Firewire 800 port, which you’ll find on the rear of the iMac. Of course it also has three USB 2.0 ports for further expansion.

Influence of a Mac Fan by Senthil (EmiratesMac)

If you’re as long a Mac user as I am, you probably have a pretty big chip on your shoulder. You’re proud of showing of your Mac and its abilities to your nonMac friends and family. You also take pleasure in putting down the PC and the Windows platform. Of course sometimes you have to put up with snide remarks like, “You can’t use Yahoo Talk on a Mac”. Immediately you get them to conjure a paper divided into two halves, where on one side you mentally make up a list all things that Mac does and on the other side what it can’t. At the end of this exercise the side with ‘all that you can do with a Mac’ has thrice the number of points than the side ‘What you can’t do with a Mac’. This then becomes the starting point of a debate on the merits of switching to Mac. Nowadays, I flash my iPhone and it’s amazing features and graphics to impress people who are not yet used to the Mac world. Though I still find some basic features that a phone must have missing on the iPhone, I still prefer it over any other phone and get into a forceful justification if anyone tries to brush the iPhone aside as just another fad. I’m sure the number of people going ga-ga over iPhone would rub off on the sales of Apple Macs.

First with the iPod and now with iPhone a lot of Windows users are considering switching to Mac. With its attractive looks, ease of use and tightly integrated software and applications, Mac makes the transition to a digital world easy and compelling. My pitch to anyone who dares start a discussion with me on the merits of switching to a Mac is simple one liner “Buy the Mac and start doing all that you want that you could not do with your PC”. Then I proceed to list few strong reasons for him or her to switch starting from creating your own web page to digitizing one’s entire CD col-

lection and photograph collection.

My list of compelling reasons for any one to switch to a Mac are as follows

Buy the Mac, bring it home and start using it immediately without waiting for someone in the family to come and set the machine up for you as you would do with a Windows machine.

You need not worry about viruses and save some money buying anti virus software.

Mac is a lot more intelligent and intuitive than your top of the line Windows machine. Working with the Mac is a pleasure that you would never experience with a Windows PC.

The Mac comes bundled with all the basic software that one needs for digitizing one’s life.

In case you can’t get rid of the Windows from your system, you still have the option of using Windows on your Mac till the time you deWindowize yourself.

Plus the Mac supports all the software that you are used to in the Windows world, well almost all of the software..

Finally, it is different, stylish and something you would be proud to be seen in a mall or at the office.

You get something very valuable free which you would never get with a Windows PC is a Mac User group in any part of the world which is almost like a family for you in the virtual world.

By the time I finish with any one engaging in a conversation with me on the merits of converting to a Mac, he or she is almost ready to get the Mac immediately.

How to

Switch to a Mac and

Enjoy Doing It by Rui Carmo

A lot of people have been moving to a Mac over the past few years, so a while back I thought I’d jot down a few notes about my experience over the last five years or so which, over time, grew to become a primer of sorts. First, the motives for anyone switching are pretty much irrelevant, and will not be discussed here – discussing relative merits of computer platforms is very much like discussing cars, and therefore largely unimportant if you are getting what you want. Quasi-religious beliefs that any platform is better than another are not just irrelevant, but plain childish and stupid. Before maligning the Mac, Windows or Linux, make sure you know what you are talking about – most people in the IT business have “pet hatreds” towards one platform or another out of sheer ignorance, and more than a decade in the business has shown me that anyone who only has bad things to say about any given platform probably doesn’t know what they’re talking about. So if you know you want a Mac, you’ve come to the right place for a few basic hints that might just save you a lot of time.

Understand the Fundamentals The major “under-the-hood” issue for nonMac users is the underlying UNIX foundation of Mac OS X – it’s quite different from what you might be used to, and if you used any sort of UNIX before, bookmark Amit Singh’s “What Is Mac OS X?” now and go read it after you finish this (http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/). The second, and quite frequent, issue is the not-so-recent transition to Intel processors; and all that comes with it, including the ability to run other operating systems, like Windows. The bottom line on that is: if it’s a Mac, it will work the same way regardless of what chip is inside, and let you access a never-ending variety of applications for whatever platform you wish. The Rosetta emulator ensures pretty much all the old Mac software will run on new Intel machines with acceptable performance, and most relevant applications are already available as Universal Binaries, so they run on both PowerPC and Intel Macs. Windows on a Mac And yes, you can run Windows and Linux on Intel-based Macs. There are two ways to do it: The first should be familiar to computer enthusiasts and consists of doing dual boot using Boot Camp, for which Apple even supplies Windows drivers. The second, which I recommend for those of you who only require doing so infrequently or alongside Mac applications, consists of using virtualization packages to run the other operating system in a sandbox. This option means you don’t have to reboot every time you want to run Windows. Basically you run Windows much like any other Mac OS X application. There are currently three options for doing that: The first to appear was Parallels (http:// www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/), which has been around since roughly mid-2006, and the other is VMware’s Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/), which reached public beta on December 2006 and was soon after released commercially. Recently, a free (for home use) alternative called VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) has also made significant progress, but I haven’t had enough hands-on experience with it. Anyway, those will not be discussed here at length, since the main point of this document is to ensure you feel at home in Mac OS X as quickly as possible. But they are recommended if you need to ensure a smooth transition where it regards specific

applications that may not be available on the Mac. As to the bulk of this guide, the target is non-technical folk. However, I do throw in a few hints for people who are coming to Mac OS X with some computing experience and expect some “best practices”, so don’t worry if some points are a bit too technical. Buying Buying a Mac is not a normal experience anywhere. It’s a local thing, best done with local people. In Portugal, where I live, that has been the case for entirely the wrong reasons: the lack of Apple stores, the recurring problems of the local retail chain (we still don’t have Apple Care and other niceties), and the quasi-underground nature of most user groups. However, picking which Mac to buy, and when, is pretty straightforward. It’s mostly a matter of visiting the Apple site, reading the MacRumors Buyers’ Guide (http://buyersguide.macrumors. com/) to figure out how recent each model is relative to the full lineup (but take their predictions with a grain of salt), and then finding a store that stocks it. If you happen to buy a second-hand machine, which is common given the flurry of upgrades brought upon by the recent change to Intel, you can assume that any PowerPC machine manufactured in 2005 and even early 2006 will serve people well for a lot of years to come. Just make sure you plan for an upgrade to 1GB of RAM or more, since the current version of Mac OS X is more demanding in terms of resources. I will not go into warranties, support or suchlike – this is, again, a local affair, invariably dealt with by local people, and, again, Apple Care isn’t available everywhere. So far, I’ve been lucky – a problem with one of my Macs was fixed within three weeks. It had a power supply failure, and fixing it required shipping a replacement part to Portugal. A similar thing happened to my iBook a year ago, and the experience was mostly the same. Three weeks is unacceptable in the rest of the civilized world but perfectly okay in some regions, it seems. Apple really should consider improving their presence in Portugal and other regions like the Middle East, and not just by beefing up the retail channel. But a couple of service issues in three years and, incidentally, five Macs, is a

pretty good track record in my book. Unpacking and Testing While unpacking, look at the packaging. There are neat graphical hints of how to unpack every Mac printed on the box. Do leaf through the manual, but - here’s the important bit - don’t rush it. There are a few important things to know, even if you’ve had a Mac before. If you’re getting a notebook or flat-screen, boot the Hardware Test off the first install DVD. You do this by inserting the DVD and hold down Alt – or Option, as it is called in older keyboards, while the machine boots. Amongst other things, it performs a display test, which is fundamental for picking up “dead” pixels before you start installing stuff. I used to use ScreenQuery, a simple app that filled the screen with solid colors, but it seems to have vanished. As usual, the smaller the screen, the less likely you are to have dead pixels. There is some controversy as to what amount of dead pixels warrants a replacement. Search the internet for more info. Setting up Mac OS X The default behavior these days is for the Mac to prompt you for an installation language the first time it boots from the hard disk and, after installing a few files, configure your locale settings. If your Mac boots straight to the Finder or to the login panel, then someone else has used it before. Sadly, this is a common thing with some retailers, who like to play around with their customers’ gear. If so, I recommend using the restore DVDs included with every Mac to restore it to a factoryfresh configuration. After setting up your keyboard, language and whatnot, the installer creates the first user account. This is the important bit: it is an administration account – call it “Administrator” or something like that and create another for yourself afterwards. If you’re a UNIX-head, this is not root, which is disabled. Many people think this is unnecessary until they discover, often the hard way, that they threw some important system file into the Trash. Yes, there are warnings, but using the machine as an administrator tends to make people oblivious to them, and years of using all my machines as a “regular” user bestowed upon me painless system updates, zero trouble with the core system and no software instability whatsoever. In the end, it’s your call.

shuffle@emiratesmac.com | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle Middle East 17

You can create “regular” user accounts in System Preferences after setup ends. This will not prevent you from making all the silly mistakes people do when using a Mac for the first few months, but it will significantly decrease the odds of you breaking something, as you will be asked to authenticate as an administrator before any significant changes are made. Not to mention that it prevents unwanted changes to your system. Network configuration is usually trivial. Macs use DHCP by default, and visible Wi-Fi access points will show up on the AirPort menu. To connect to a hidden or security-hardened Wi-Fi network, choose the “Other…” option in the AirPort menu. For those having to deal with older broadband connections, PPPoE support is built-in, and your card’s physical Ethernet address can be looked up in the Ethernet section of the Network preference pane in System Preferences. Firewalling is configured in the Security tab in System Preferences (in Tiger this was actually under the Sharing pane). The defaults are usually sensible for most cases (and Mac OS X is very secure), but it’s best to ensure it’s on if you’re directly connected to the Net. What not to do Don’t use the administration account for anything other than setting up the machine and applications or changing “permanent” settings. If you want to, say, change network settings as a normal user you’ll be prompted for the admin password, and since you’ll do configuration changes less and less often as time progresses, this isn’t a problem. Don’t install “toy” applications as the admin user until you’re sure you’re going to use them. Most applications will run just fine from an Applications folder under your user directory. Don’t open files or mail attachments that come from unknown sources. This is a basic security measure that is valid for any kind of machine, even for a Mac – no operating system can protect your machine from your mistakes. One way to improve your odds is to open Safari preferences and uncheck the Open “safe” files after downloading option. There is no such thing as a “safe” file – you have to be sure of what you download.

Never, ever move Apple applications (such as Mail.app) to other folders. Mac OS X updates are not always very clever at updating built-in apps, so you’ll end up with either two copies of your apps or a single broken one. If you’re a Windows user: Don’t try moving a folder on top of another with the same name – Mac OS X will replace the entire folder, i.e., it will not merge both folder’s contents and will cause you to lose your data. This is a very significant difference between the Finder and Windows Explorer that catches most people at least once, and is simply a matter of different traditions (plus the UNIX underpinnings of Mac OS X, where things have worked like this from time immemorial). Drag the folder contents, not the folder itself. If you’re a UNIX user: Don’t fiddle with the system startup scripts unless you’re sure you know what you’re doing (which includes reading this and a bit more about launching and the startup files themselves). Mac OS X doesn’t use runlevels in the same way as “classic” UNIX systems, and things like network configuration, system services, and whatnot are not necessarily stored under /etc. You’ll figure it out after a while, but don’t go thinking this is “just like any other UNIX system”. It both is and isn’t like other UNIXes, and like other UNIXes, fiddling under the hood is not to be done lightly until you’ve read the documentation. Do not install stuff that messes with Apple’s defaults, including UI “skins”, funky plugins, low-level UNIX tools that overwrite (as opposed to coexist with) the supplied ones and other nonsense – that is half way to breaking the OS upon the next system update. Things You Should Do Did you read the bit above about setting up your own user account? Go back and read it then. Disable Safari’s “Open Safe Files After Downloading” preference. There is no such thing as a safe file anymore, and like e-mail attachments, you should only download and open files from trusted sources. Yes, I am repeating this again, just to make sure you get it. Tweak Safari preferences to enable tabs. You’ll never go back.

18 shuffle Middle East | www.emiratesmac.com | shuffle@emiratesmac.com

Create your own Applications folder inside your home directory (Mac OS X will change the icon accordingly) and try out new stuff in there. If it breaks, you won’t break the machine for other people, and if a Mac OS X app breaks while running under an unprivileged account, it’s badly written for sure. Put things you want to share among users in the /Users/Shared folder. You may have to tweak file and folder permissions a bit, but it’s the easiest way. Consider using a separate user account for playing around (yes, another one, besides your own and the administration one). Fast User Switching makes it very easy to try out new software like this. Set up separate accounts for kids using the Simple Finder or Some Limits option under the Limitations tab. Use Exposé and Spaces. Go on, press F9, then F8. Learn how to use F8 to invoke the Spaces overview, F9, F10 and F11 to switch windows and drag-and drop files onto apps – there is nothing quite like it, and it’s a real time-saver. Get as much RAM as you can possibly afford – 512MB used to be OK for general Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger use, but these days 1GB is pretty much the baseline for Leopard, with 2GB for intensive use. I have felt little need to go beyond that so far, but folk into video editing will most certainly disagree with me. If your Mac didn’t come with a Mighty Mouse, as late 2005 models do, then get a proper mouse. I’ve said before that Mac OS X with a single button mouse is like rowing with a single oar, and I mean it: Mac OS X supports multiple-button mice, scroll wheels, etc. I used Microsoft wireless mice, the old kind, not the Bluetooth ones, for many years, which worked perfectly and used to be available in white. Although all new laptop models now have two-finger scrolling, people picking up a second-hand iBook or PowerBook should look at something like uControl or SideTrack to make better use of the trackpad. Drag Terminal.app to your dock as soon as possible (it’s in Applications/Utilities). UNIX won’t bite you, and some things are best done at a terminal.

Switchers’ Application Guide

by Rui Carmo

Adobe Acrobat: Mac OS X ships with the ability to print anything to PDF and view PDF files in Preview, and there are several tools to manipulate them - like apps/ PDFLab. But you can install Adobe’s own reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/ acrobat/index_acro.html) if you really, really want to. Ahead Nero: There are plenty of options beyond learning to use Disk Utility to burn ISO files, but here are two that I have used at one time or another: Burn is straightforward and to the point (http://burn-osx.sourceforge. net/), FireStarter FX is regarded as able to handle CUE, BIN files and overburning (http://www.projectomega.org/subcat. php?lg=en&php=products_firestarter). File Transfer (FTP and SFTP): Besides the rather lacking FTP support in the Finder, you can try Cyberduck (http:// cyberduck.ch/); Fugu, which is my current favorite (http://rsug.itd.umich.edu/software/fugu/); or Transmit, which is commercial (http://www.panic.com/transmit/). Notepad: This one depends on what you really need a text editor for: TextEdit is built in and works fine; BBEdit has a legion of followers (http://www.barebones. com/products/bbedit/); TextMate is probably the most sophisticated programmers’ editor out there (http://macromates.com/); and VoodooPad can do a lot more than just text editing (http://flyingmeat.com/ voodoopad/). Norton Ghost: If you really want to completely clone a disk there’s nothing out there that’s able to beat SuperDuper, and it’s highly recommended by a lot of people (http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/ SuperDuperDescription.html). Launchy, AppRocket, etc.: If you want the best keyboard-based application launcher in the universe, get Quicksilver (http://www.quiksilver.com). Microsoft OneNote: There is no direct replacement. Try VoodooPad or FreeMind (mind you, OneNote file formats are proprietary, and have changed between Office 2003 and 2007). Microsoft Office: There is an Office 2008 edition for the Mac that is roughly equivalent to Office 2007, but you can also try

NeoOffice (http://www.neooffice.org/), which has been significantly improved over the past few months and has an Aqua UI. Of course, there will always be minor issues when converting Windows metafiles and other Windows-specific formats – not unlike when moving documents between two different versions of Office or between machines with different sets of fonts installed.

Instant Messaging: There are a number of alternatives: Adium (http://www.adiumx. com/) is most likely the only IM client you’ll ever really need, and supports all popular IM services. But there’s also Psi (http://psi-im.org/) and the built-in iChat - which will connect to Jabber networks. There are, of course, official Mac versions of most IM clients, but why use more than one app?

Microsoft Outlook: There aren’t that many options, and you may want to try Leopard’s Mail.app (which now has pretty decent To-Do and iCal integration) and Entourage (which is shipped with Office for the Mac, but does not have the same feature set). On my site you will find several utilities that will migrate Outlook data.

Microsoft NetMeeting: Again, there are plenty of alternatives: XMeeting is able to talk to corporate H.323 videoconferencing equipment - Of course mileage may vary (http://xmeeting.sourceforge.net/pages/ index.php); iChat is proprietary but works better between Macs; and Skype, which is proprietry but cross platform, can also do video on the Mac.

Microsoft PowerPoint: Keynote (from the iWork suite) is a better than satisfactory replacement for just about any purpose, and will handle PowerPoint files - with few limitations.

IRC: I personally prefer Colloquy (http:// colloquy.info/), although lots of people like X-Chat Aqua (http://sourceforge.net/projects/xchataqua/).

Microsoft Project: There are several options, presented below in no particular order: GanttProject is a free cross-platform Java application that imports .mpx files (http://ganttproject.biz/); but Merlin is rumored in reviews to be the best at importing and exporting Project .mpx files flawlessly (http://www.merlin2.net/). You also have OmniPlan (http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniplan/); and Project X, which has a built-in web server for team members to file progress reports directly (http://www.projectx.com/).

Windows Media Player: In terms of media support, there are many Quicktime plugins and standalone players to enable you to view pretty much anything out there. Here are my favorites: Flip4Mac will enable you to play most popular Windows Media formats (http://www.flip4mac. com/); Perian will add support for a lot more formats - including DivX (http:// perian.org/); and VLC is a great standalone player for just about anything you throw at it (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/).

Microsoft Word: Pages (from the iWork suite) is a more than adequate replacement for most purposes and will handle Word .doc and .rtf files, with a few limitations.

WinRAR: UnRarX (http://www.unrarx. com/) will unpack those for you. But there’s no real point in using RAR files these days, no matter what people say, because at least on Mac, which has built-in ZIP support, ZIP is good enough.

Microsoft Excel: Numbers (from the iWork suite) is a very decent replacement for most purposes although it has some limitations in terms of formulae and no macro compatibility.

VNC: Mac OS X ships with a working VNC server (and a pretty decent client in Leopard). I have several VNC clients and an alternate server listed on my VNC page.

Microsoft Visio: OmniGraffle Pro can import Visio files in XML format; Not the native binary format, so you’ll have to export your files - but it’s the closest, and most say best, possible alternative (http://

www.omnigroup.com/applications/OmniGraffle/).

FileMaker Pro 9 ME Price Around $600US From WinSoft Distributor GraphEast Web http://www.grapheast.com/gesoftware/cp.php?id=16

FileMaker, a subsidiary of Apple Inc., has produced their database product for a long time and now it’s reached version 9. This is not a revolutionary upgrade, rather it’s an incremental upgrade of an already mature product. And version 9 of FileMaker is really not without interesting new things. One main argument for many to upgrade to version 9 is that all previous versions of FileMaker will have varying degrees of problems with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. But to put it simply, if you run Leopard, get FileMaker 9. The biggest news in FileMaker 9, in my view, is that you can now hook up to SQL data sources, and use FileMaker as a graphical, user-friendly, interface. If you have data sitting in any number of SQL databases, FileMaker now makes it fast and easy to interact with that data. You could do some of this previously but it was fairly complicated and the functionality was limited. Now you can use an SQL database just as you can any FileMaker database. For web developers using MySQL as their database engine, another welcome addition in the PHP Site Assistant helps you create dynamic web pages using FileMaker Pro. FileMaker has quite a way to go though to make this a really attractive feature. This version includes Middle Eastern features which means users can now enter and display text in Arabic language, search data and use Arabic text attributes. THere are also 20 localized work templates. One nice feature is the ability to mirror an English layout with a push of a button to instantly convert an English database to Arabic. There is also an Arabic user guide to make FileMaker more localized. In conclusion, FileMaker has made great progress with their flagship product and version 9 is surely a tempting offer for anyone needing a powerful but relatively user-friendly database. Arabic support is an extra bonus, which may seal the deal for some potential customers.

Blackberry 8310 Price AED 2090 (Carrefour) From RIM Distributor Etisalat Web http://na.blackberry.com/

eng/devices/device-detail. jsp?navId=H0,C221,P583

Two issues ago (see Shuffle March 2008) we reviewed Blackberry 8800, and now we’re digging deep into the Blackberry 8310 - also called “Curve”. It’s definitely more of a consumer-oriented phone compared to the 8800, but they are both also more alike than they are different. The 8310 is a little bit smaller, feels lighter, and has a differently designed outside. All the keys and controls are laid out in the same way as on other Blackberry devices, and it uses the non-standard “pearl” joystick control for all interface functions. The keyboard is, in my view, better than on the 8800; with a nicer feeling “click” to the keys. The addition of a camera is the biggest news in terms of specifications. It’s a 1.3MP camera, which produces 1600x1200 pixel exposures, and for this sort of device they’re actually not bad. It’s nice to always have access to a camera on the go, and I put it to good use by posting photos I take on the go to my photo blog at http://www.uaetumblr.com. Pretty much all photos there are from the 8310. But having a camera also puts the 8310 out of the running for many corporations who don’t allow camera phones at all for security and privacy reasons. With the Curve series of phones, Blackberry is a more attractive option for consumers. Cooler looking, a camera, etc. make the 8310 a good mobile device - and the underlying Blackberry e-mail functionality makes this a great device for anyone who wants to do e-mail on the go. And in the UAE, with the Blackberry data plan currently being the only truly unlimited data plan, a Blackberry device can also help you save money if you do a lot of data traffic over your mobile phone.

Final Cut Express 4: Movie Making for Everyone Most of us know that Final Cut Express is somewhere between iMovie and Final Cut Pro - but exactly what the differences are, we’re not sure about.

Price $35.99 From Peachpit Distributor Peachpit Web http://www.peachpit.com/store/ product.aspx?isbn=0321534670

This book is a part of the excellent Apple Pro Training Series published by PeachPit. We’ve reviewed other titles in this series in Shuffle before, and hopefully we’ll continue to do so. The Pro Training Series books are not the most visually striking books, but they are great tools if you want to learn something - and this book is no exception. The author Diana Weynand has done a great job in splitting complicated tasks into small steps: You read the steps and follow along, and learn as you do so. Each chapter in the book seems to presents a complete and distinct lesson in some aspect of video editing. You work with files that are all on the included DVD. The topics covered includes how to effectively edit your video, work with sound, make nice transitions and composites, add titles, and more advanced concepts like color correction. You’ll also learn how to finish your video in a way suitable for what the end use is, e.g. web, DVD, etc. That’s a part that I would have wanted to read more about, because there’s so much to know; podcasting, streaming, codecs, etc. But that’s perhaps a bit out of the scope of this book. The book has 16 chapters, and there are six additional appendices on the DVD covering areas such as ‘Advanced Trimming’ and ‘Working with Multiple Tracks’. Seems to me this is functionality that sets Final Cut Express apart from iMovie, so they should probably have been included in the printed book. Overall, this is an excellent book through which to learn Final Cut Express.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Price Around $300US (standard edition) From Microsoft Distributor Microsot Web http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ products/Office2008/default. mspx

When Microsoft launched Office 2008 at MacWorld Expo in January of this year, it was received with great anticipation. The main news in Office 2008 is that Microsoft has finally made it Universal Binary, meaning it’s optimized for Intel processors. And many would say “it’s about time”, since the previous 2004 version has been out for about four years, and Apple completed the transition of the entire Mac lineup in late 2006. One big piece of news with the 2008 edition is that the standard file format is new for all applications. Office 2008 uses the Open XML file format and files now end with “x”, as in “.docx”. This can cause problems in some situations as the new formats are not backwards compatible, so Office 2004 users won’t be able to read them. You can of course save in the old formats from Office 2008, but you may then loose some functionality. Word has been transformed into more of a desktop publishing program. With a new Publishing Layout mode, which mimics the layout functionality in applications like Pages, it is easier than before to place pictures, resize them, and move them around. With Excel there doesn’t seem to be too much new stuff. They increased the size limit of spreadsheets to 16,000 columns and more than one million rows. More importantly, Excel 2008 does not support Visual Basic for Applications. This means that thousands of users who depend on macros in Excel, are now left out in the cold by Microsoft. On the bright side though, a new formula-builder makes creating formulas easier than ever before. With the 2008 version of PowerPoint, Microsoft is catching up with KeyNote. It’s now easier than before to create better-looking presentations, with new themes, and especially the new SmartArt Graphics. Think of SmartArt Graphics as simple wizards or guides, which assist you with building graphics. Entourage is the Mac-equivalent to Outlook for Windows, but they are two totally different applications. There are some changes to the interface and Microsoft have introduced support for Kerberos Single Sign-on Authentication, the out-of-office assistant and managed folders. These are all welcome additions, but are certainly not mind-blowing. All in all Microsoft has done a good, but not great, job with Office 2008. After such a long wait it’s a bit like “Is that all there is?” Bottom line - if you’re happy with Office 2004 there is little reason to upgrade, other than if you work in an environment with all Office 2007/2008 users, in which case the file compatibility will be a necessity. If you run an Intel Mac, there doesn’t seem to be any great speed increases in Office 2008 compared to 2004, but it does seem more stable, which is a very good thing. We would like to thank Microsoft GCC for providing the copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac that was used in this review.

Working with Styles in Word 2008 Specifying and applying styles is one of the more useful and powerful things you can do with your word processing documents. This is not something that only Microsoft Word can do; Apple’s Pages does it as well. The idea is that you specify a particular style for headings, body text, etc. and then you can apply that style to other parts of the document with a mouse click or two. If you later want to change a particular style, you change the specification of the style, and wherever that style is applied you will see the updated formatting.

STEP 1

STEP 2

STEP 3

Write the text for one of your headings.

In the Toolbox Formatting Palette Styles section, click on the right side of “Heading 1” and select “Modify Style”.

In the dialogue box select font, color, line spacing, etc. for your new style.

STEP 4

STEP 5

STEP 6

Close the dialogue box and you should see the heading in your document. Change style to whatever you selected in the previous step.

Type in some more text for another heading.

Select the new heading you just typed in, and click on “Heading 1” in the Toolbox. The text you selected should now be formatted according to the “Heading 1” style. Now you can go on and write and style the rest of your document with a few simple mouse clicks.

Peel the Apple Get answers to your Apple tech support questions. Email techsupport@emiratesmac.com

Q: What is BootCamp? A: BootCamp is free software from Apple (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ bootcamp.html) with which you can install and run Windows on an Intel Mac. When you run it you first partition your hard drive, and then with an original Windows installation disc (XP or Vista) it installs Windows for you. Then whenever you reboot your Mac you can choose to start Mac OS X or Windows. You could even set it to always automatically boot Windows - but why would you want to do that when Mac OS X is so much better? Q: I purchased my [Apple] laptop in Sydney, Australia. I have misplaced my receipt and I’m now living in Dubai. My computer is still under warranty, is there anything that can be done? A: I can only assume you’re having problems with it, and so need to get it repaired. Apple has worldwide warranty on their laptops, so the warranty will be honored here. There shouldn’t really be any problem with you taking it to a store here for service, but they could perhaps not be as cooperative with you as they would be if the Mac were bought from them in the first place. Q: I have a MacBook and would like to know where to reset the SuperDrive’s region settings. I reside in the UAE and the drive was set to Region 1.

A: A quick Google search (http://www. macupdate.com/info.php/id/13801) reveals

a utility with which you can change the region code for the Mac. You can also use something like VLC (http://www.videolan. org/vlc/) to play DVD. Q: Tell me one thing, since my MacBook Air has no drive and I don’t have that external drive, how can I install [software] using my iMac? A: If you don’t have the external SuperDrive for the MacBook Air, you can install software and copy files from CDs or DVDs over a network from another Mac using Remote Disc. You need the Remote Disc software, which is available on the installation disks that came with the MacBook Air, or it’s included in Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopard. After that it’s as easy as enabling “DVD or CD Sharing” in the Sharing Preference Pane, and you should be able to see any disc you insert into the “host” Mac on the MacBook Air. This is one feature Apple seems to have thought about quite a bit, and it generally works very well. Q: I have an issue, my friend accidently deleted an Album from iPhoto and I can’t get it back, and I have no idea how to get the pictures that were on that album back. What can be done to get the album back or at least the images put in that album?

A: Don’t worry. Deleting an album in iPhoto is just like deleting a playlist in iTunes: it doesn’t actually delete the photos or songs it contains. The album is just like a placeholder for any number of photos, it doesn’t actually hold the original photos. So after you delete an album the photos are still in the iPhoto library. If you click on “Photos” in the iPhoto sidebar you will be able to see all the photos in the library - and you can then create new albums from whatever photos you want, including recreating the original album you deleted.

Recipe:

Apple Pancakes

Weaving The Web

by Crystal (EmiratesMac) Oh Boy! If you want to win your family’s heart, there’s nothing better than to make them a big plate of homemade apple pancakes. They’ll be crying for this recipe over and over again. If your family’s not big on nutmeg, then just add cinnamon; the pancakes are good with either spice. You can also make your children’s favorite shapes out of the pancakes. I hope your family enjoys this recipe as much as my family did. This recipe makes 7 eight-inch (20cm) pancakes and it comes from http://www.usapple.org/consumers/recipes/pancakes.cfm.

Ingredients

Directions

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 3 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/3 teaspoon baking soda 1 egg 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup milk 1 cup apples, peeled and grated

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and nutmeg in mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, mix baking soda, egg, butter, vanilla, and milk. Combine both mixtures, stirring only until blended. Fold in grated apple. Bake on hot, lightly-greased griddle. When batter is full of holes, turn to brown on other side. Turn pancakes only once while cooking. Makes 7 eight-inch (20cm) pancakes.
