CLERGY NEWSLETTER ‘God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.’ (attributed to Reinhold Niebuhr) That prayer has been running through my mind recently rather a lot. I would hazard a guess that it is familiar to most of you. In today’s age many are striving to find their identity and to leave their mark on the world. In just a few words this prayer neatly sums up the Christian belief that it is through an openness to God that we find insight both into who we are and what our unique work in the world may be. Many people struggle with situations they would rather were not there, or issues they would like to be changed. Carrying these things can be stressful and deeply troubling, particularly when it is not clear what, if anything, we can do about it. The last part of the prayer is perhaps the most important: it is God’s wisdom that we need so that we can live peaceful and productive lives wherever we find ourselves and whatever situations we face. The first followers of Jesus knew much about the power of God helping them to discern priorities for the early Church. Through the Easter season to Pentecost we have heard many passages from the Acts of the Apostles in our church services. Extraordinary stories of God’s power to equip, to enable and to transform lives for the better abound here. These first Christians were called to do amazing things sometimes; at other times to stick with the message even when the going got tough. They were ordinary people but through their openness to God in prayer they were able to be and do extraordinary things. There is an opportunity to hear about other ordinary people who led extraordinary lives for God when Bishop Christopher comes to South Kilworth on 14, 15, and 16 June to lead our ‘Weekend Away at Home’. The Bishop will give four short talks on the patron saints of the UK: Andrew, David, George and Patrick; and each talk will be followed by some silence to help us to be still before God and open to God’s presence. You will be welcome to come to any or all of the sessions as you are able – look out for further details in this magazine or at any of our churches. Prayer is most simply about spending time deliberately in God’s presence. We may find it difficult to find words to pray but perhaps the simple ‘serenity’ prayer above may be a good place to start. It can help us to share with God all that preoccupies us, the situations we worry about, the things we would like to happen, our hopes and our dreams. We believe that God will answer us with a clearer idea of the way forward, whether that be to take action or to let something be, and that we shall be equipped both with God’s extraordinary courage and that peace which passes all understanding, the priceless serenity that only God can bring. SOUTH KILWORTH BOWLS CLUB The weather has been variable, but the competitions have begun and regular “Roll-ups” are being held on Wednesday evenings, from 6pm, at the Bowling Green, Village Hall. Anyone interested in having a go and joining in would be very welcome – the only initial requirement is a pair of shoes with completely flat soles – to protect the Green. LUNCHEON CLUB For those who still hold a belief in lucky numbers, for the thirteen of us who lunched in the Village Hall on Thursday 23rd May our luck was most surely was in. The main course, a superb Fish Pie served with peas, was made by Eileen Burd. A delicious Sherry Trifle was contributed by Rachel Cavell. This was home cooking at its best and was much appreciated by all. It was nice to see Louise Boffey - a previous contributor to the band of Home Cookers. We thank her for taking the time to drop in on a brief visit from her new home in Somerset. The next meeting will take place in the Village Hall on Thursday 20th June. David Burd

SOUTH KILWORTH W.I. At May’s Meeting, members listened to a talk by Brenda Lincoln from Lutterworth, on “Quilts for Injured Servicemen”. Brenda and others started making quilts for injured servicemen at Headley Court the rehabilitation centre in Surrey about 4 years ago. From what started as a few quilts being made and taken to Headley Court, she has made 1,500 so far. Through this they have been able to follow the progress of the injured soldiers, and how they are taught to use their prosthetic limbs and to get to lead fulfilled lives. She showed us samples of the patchwork quilts that she makes. Many of the soldiers have special requests for items to be included on the quilts, be it regimental badges or nicknames. This was a very interesting talk about a local charity helping our injured servicemen. Next month’s talk is by a representative from the RSPCA. Visitors and new members are always welcome. MA-MITES REMINDER The next Ma-Mites baby/toddler group will be held on Tuesday June 4th in the village hall. It starts at 10am, when we will have all the toys out, ride-ons etc, and outdoor area if the weather is good enough. At 11am the Boogie Bods lady is coming to keep the children amused with music and dancing. The cost is £2 per child - which includes coffee/tea/biscuits! So do come along, all welcome. EDITORIAL I enjoyed the Bank Holiday weekend weather but am now wondering where the sun has gone. Hope it comes back soon and shines for the summer events – Oak Tree House Open Gardens, Windfarm Fund Launch and the Village Hall / WASoSK August Bank Holiday Bonanza. Managed to get our Windfarm Community Fund voting forms back to Ernie Roberts (after we had wondered should you put zero for all, 10 for all and where the space was for “none of these”) earlier this month but could not understand how on earth he was going to interpret the responses. Apparently the numbers are going to be added up with no weightings or more detailed analysis. The Open Meeting on Wednesday 12th June when the responses are reviewed will hopefully provide more clarity. Ann Saunders

SWINFORD WIND FARM COMMUNITY FUND LAUNCH DAY 8TH JUNE 2013
The wind farm developer, Messrs Vattenfall, are sponsoring a Community Fund Launch Day on the 8th June. The programme for the day is as follows: 12 – 4pm Open Day on site at the Wind farm Entrance by ticket only. Tickets are free of charge and available from Ernie Roberts on a first come first served basis. Entrance to the site is via shuttle bus from the village – timetable for the bus’s are available with the tickets. Entrance is open to anyone living in the area 6pm – 9.30pm Evening Event at South Kilworth Village Hall Entrance is again by ticket only. Tickets are free of charge and include a hog roast and one free drink per ticket and are available on a first come first served basis from Ernie Roberts. Entrance is only available to people from the eight parishes in the Community Fund.
