JOSEPH PLATEAU Joseph Plateau: born in October 1801 in brussels he died at the age of 81. He studied at the University of Liege pursuing in being a doctor of physical and mathematical sciences in 1829. Three years later Plateau invented the first illusion of a moving image which he names the phenakistoscope. It consists of two discs mounted on the same axis. The first disc had slots around the edge, and he second contained drawings of successive action, drawn around the disc in concentric circles. While being successful in the market the phenakistoscope gained some different names such as phantmascope and Fantoscope. It was popular until William Horner invented the Zoetrope which was an upgrade because it didn’t require a viewing mirror. Also an improvement was more than one person could view the moving pictures at the same time. This invention was important because it was the start of the invention of moving images and the illusion of moving images which is still continuing today.
