This course will challenge you to expand your approach to paint application by introducing you to a broad range of common and unusual art tools, from knives and rollers to tile-cutters, brooms, sticks and trowels. In this course, you will step outside of your usual methods and set aside your most comfortable ways of working with paint. Assignments will focus on larger projects and on creating paint-based mixed media art in nonconventional ways.

FORMS AND CONCEPTS IN CONTEMPORARY PAINTING This unique course combines studio work and contemporary art history with a focus on the practice of painting. This course is ideal for students who are interested in locating their own practice within the contemporary art market and gallery system. You will be equipped with, and encouraged to locate, your own practice within broader themes and trends. Through field trips, critiques and presentations you will further your studio work, while being encouraged to develop ways of talking about your painting practice in new and contemporary ways. ACRYLIC PAINTING II

This intermediate course is designed to further your exploration of acrylic painting as an expressive medium. You will explore and experiment with materials and a variety of conceptual and technical approaches to painting with acrylics. Emphasis will be on your individual development and on enhancing your technical skills and personal expression. The course will move fluidly between traditional applications, and abstract and expressive ones.

THE ART OF PASTEL

Explore the versatility of the medium of pastel in this introductory course. Pastel offers a range of possiblies within the intersection of drawing and painting. Students will learn the expressive properties of the medium, as well as appropriate application and preservation methods. Students will also have the opportunity to experiment with the subtleties of colour and composition.

Continue your exploration of oil painting in this intermediate course. Further develop your skills and techniques in this challenging medium as you investigate colour, composition, use of scale, subject matter and technical processes. Time will be split between hands-on exercises and self-directed studio work. Students will also examine contemporary and historical oil painting and how it can inform their work.

Learn to draw and paint a portrait while Mar 1 - Apr 5 working from a live model.
