WHY ART IS IMPORTANT It goes without saying that The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Philippe de Montebello, the director and CEO of the museum, believe that art matters. However, when one addresses the significance of art, it is not a question of whether it is important or not. But rather, why? Why do so many scholars and historians devote their entire lives to studying and researching art? The reason is: A work of art is the only thing a person in a previous generation can create that allows for people today to see and identify with. Civilizations since the beginning of time have been producing art. It might be the etchings on a cave wall that tell an old fable or a piece of pottery was used to collect water, but these items tell us about a culture. They act as a time capsule. A sketch allows our generation to travel back in time and look into the memory of the person who created the sketch. It gives a sense of the individual and the community in which he lived. Even though the world is interconnected today, art proves that this is not a new concept. It is evident in the works of art that people created

page 2 of 2 years ago. Tapestries with both Christian motifs and Muslim symbols were woven on silks from India, fusing three cultures from different corners of the globe into one item. Viewing art allows for us to understand others, but creating art is vital as well. Individuals can use art as an outlet to express themselves to our generation and those to come. Not long ago, it was impossible to view works of art from different places in a single location. Museums have made it is easier to look into the minds of generations past. Museums house pieces of art that span thousands of years of existence from every corner of the world. However, this can be a doubleedged sword. Although more people have access to a wider variety of works of art, individuals have a greater chance to overlook works and not give them enough time to take in the whole piece. Most people know that art matters, but it is imperative to see through its outward beauty to the importance that lies beneath the surface of the canvas. Every painting has a story and individual behind it. The Met challenges its visitors to find out the significance of that story and who the individual is. The Met was founded in 1870 and has since retained its mission to stimulate appreciation for and advance knowledge of works of art for the public.
