CELEBRATING a year of

SUCCESS Capital Area United Way 2013-2014

SPONSORED BY

Celebrating a Year of Success. Creating a Path for the Future. A COMMUNITY where everyone is empowered to achieve their full potential—it’s not just a vision statement that guides the work of Capital Area United Way but a beacon of light that shines on countless opportunities available to us all when we work together. United Way brings people together: nonprofits and for-profits, public and private organizations, experts and everyday people, around a shared desire to create a stronger and more vibrant community for all. We want to ensure that those who are most challenged in our community, the homeless, the helpless, the abused, and the disabled, have access to the most basic needs and services that stabilize their lives today and provide hope for their tomorrow. This foundation of caring is based on what United Way was established for nearly 90 years ago and continues to be the bedrock on which we build and serve our community. We also know that in order to break the debilitating cycle of generational poverty and underachievement, we must focus on the building blocks for a better life: education for children and youth, income stability for families, and healthy lives for all. The focus of our work is on eliminating the barriers to success that hinder so many and creating a roadmap to success and stability. It takes a holistic and integrated approach to achieve this kind of success. United Way is the whole community—businesses, organizations, and everyday people from across the 10-parish capital area—working together to create a better life and community for all. We are happy to report that in our 2013-2014 fiscal year, we made great progress. Last year, Capital Area United Way funded programs and services that directly touched the lives of 347,000* people in our region. We recruited, trained, and engaged more than 900 volunteers who contributed close to 10,000 volunteer hours of service. We raised $9 million from 20,000 donors throughout our community, which marked the first campaign increase in several years. In February 2014, the Board of Directors met and established a three-year strategic plan which focuses on four key strategic areas. Organizational Learning and Development: our goal is to develop the best qualified and most competent staff and volunteer leadership that will lead United Way into the next 90 years and beyond. Our focus on Building Resources is based on building stronger and

2

deeper relationships with our donors, volunteers, and business and community leaders in a way that fully leverages the time, talent, and treasure of these groups. It is impossible to deeply engage donors without articulating a clear and compelling call to action. Our focus on Building Community is based on the idea that no “silver bullet” solution exists to address the complex challenges people in our community face. So we will build a comprehensive communitywide (10-parish area) roadmap that identifies the key strategies, barriers, and stakeholders as well as United Way’s unique roles in achieving results. Finally, none of this is possible without an organization that is well-respected, trusted, and transparent. Our final goal is Operational Excellence. We will execute the daily operations of the United Way with efficiency and excellence, which creates an internal culture of communication, collaboration, and commitment to the vision, mission, and values of the organization. As you will notice in this Annual Report to the community, we have had much success, but there’s still a long road ahead of us. To reach our community vision, will require intentional planning, collaboration, and a willingness to think differently about our community’s potential and what it takes to achieve it. That’s what we’re doing at Capital Area United Way, and we need all of you to join in. We are challenging ourselves and this community to raise the bar on giving, advocating, and volunteerism in order to create a roadmap for success and sustainability for everyone in our community. Thank you for being part of the solution.
