The BMW E46 is the fourth generation of the 3 Series compact executive cars produced by BMW, produced from 1998 when it succeeded the BMW E36. The E46 was released in 1998 to worldwide markets in the sedan body style. In 1999, a coupé and touring body style became available to all markets, and the sedan was released in the United States. A convertible and hatchback body style was released in 2000, the latter only for Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. year for the E46 chassis was 2002, when 561,249 vehicles were sold worldwide. The main competitors during the E46′s production run were the Alfa Romeo 156, Audi A4, Infiniti G, Lexus IS, MercedesBenz C-Class and the Rover 75/MG ZT. BMW M GmbH produced a high-performance variant of the E46 chassis, designated the M3. This version had a larger, more powerful engine, sportier suspension, a limited slip differential, and various aesthetic modifications. The M3 was released in 2001 and was available only in the coupé and convertible body style. It was offered with two transmissions; a standard 6-speed manual, or an optional sequential manual gearbox. Design Exterior design The E46 was developed as an evolutionary replacement for the BMW E36 chassis. In late 1995, the general exterior design of the E46 by Erik Goplen was chosen and as a result DesignworksUSA was contracted by BMW to work alongside BMW Group’s in-house design team to create the exterior body work in February 1996. Based on the E36 body shell, the design team put an emphasis on improving aerodynamics and increasing the car’s aggressive stance. on January 16, 1998. While the styling of the E46 was seen as an evolution of the extremely successful previous generation 3-series, it was not immediately embraced by either the buying public, or the automotive press. Word leaked out in the press that the BMW stylists were unhappy in raising the roof-line, and the general “rounding” of the body panels in comparison to the more squarish E36 series.

Powertrain and engine design An emphasis was put on reducing unsprung weight and increasing structural rigidity rather than increasing power output: the highest displacement model at release, the E46 328, had only 3 horsepower more than the E36 328. To counter this small power increase, the body shell of the E46 was claimed by BMW to be 70% more rigid than the E36′s, and aluminum suspension components were used increasingly in order to decrease unsprung weight. In tune with BMW’s core values, the E46 was released with a front engined rearwheel drive layout with 50/50 weight distribution. This balance allows for optimal handling in regards to the drive train layout. Useful Reviews The BMW E46 325i is part of BMW’s entry-level 3-Series, an introduction to the Ultimate Driving Machine. Although not as powerful as the 330 and more expensive models, it delivers the handling typical of BMW. I have driven the 325i sedan on city streets and on the highway in the Washington, DC area. It also feels every bit as solid and comfortable as the 5-Series and 7-Series, despite its small size. The BMW 325i, and the 3-series in general, gives the driver BMW prestige at a relatively affordable price. It has been in production from 2001 to 2007. Other E46 3-Series models included the 316, 318, 323, 328, 330, and the M3.

For those unfamiliar with what the numbers stand for, the first digit stands for the series and the last 2 digits stand for the car’s engine size. Thus, a 325i is a 3-Series with an approximately 2.5-liter engine, and a 330i has a 3-liter engine. The 2.5-liter engine generates 184 horsepower and 175 ft-lbs of torque, enough to propel the compact car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in the 7-second range, depending on transmission, and a top speed of at least 130 miles per hour. However, you will get to 60 quicker if you opt for the manual transmission instead of the automatic. It’s not much, but you can easily have aftermarket modifications done on it to increase performance. In other words, at Interstate speeds, the engine isn’t breathing hard. But step on it, and the nimble car takes off like a bat out of hell. The 325i gets fuel economy ratings of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway, according to the newly revised EPA Fuel Economy ratings. Of course, harder acceleration results in lower fuel economy. Like all other BMWs, the 325i has a fuel economy gauge. Like all other BMWs, the 325i has all the features expected of a BMW, but at a fraction of the price of the higher series BMWs. The front seats are very comfortable, but the rear seat can be cramped if there are 3 adults seated or if you are very tall. However, out of my driving experiences in this car, I had plenty of room, although the seating looked austere in contrast to the higher series BMWs. would be better located near the doors. BMW cars are famous for their handling ability, and the E46 325i is no exception. Not only does the 325i stop on a dime, even in the rain, it handles like its on rails due to its compact size. This especially applies even on twisty roads and hairpin turns. And, if the original brakes and other parts are not good enough for you, there’s always aftermarket performance brake pads, rotors, suspension, etc. Pricing: According to Blue Book values, expect to pay anywhere between $15,100 and $34,700, depending on the year, body style, and whether it’s a Rear Wheel Drive or All-Wheel Drive. Overall, the sedan (325i) is least expensive, followed by the All-Wheel Drive sedan (325xi), the coupe (325Ci), with the most expensive body style being the convertible (325Ci Convertible). These values assume average mileage and excellent condition, so expect to pay less for higher mileage vehicles and more for vehicles with below average mileage. The suggested retail values above are somewhat lower than their initial suggested retail prices, which were anywhere between $26,990 and $39,000.
