the verbs sein and bleiben: He has been to the bakery. We had stayed in Bonn.
Er ist in der Bäckerei gewesen. Wir waren in Bonn geblieben.
A few verbs can be used with sein or haben, with variations in meaning. The most common one is fahren: as an intransitive verb of motion, it forms its perfect tenses with sein and means ‘go (by transport)’, but when used as a transitive verb with haben it means ‘drive’: Sie ist leider nach Stuttgart gefahren. Sie hat schon seinen neuen Porsche gefahren.
Unfortunately she has gone to Stuttgart. She has already driven his new Porsche.
6.8 Forms of the passive German has two forms of the passive, with differences in usage (see section 7.8). The werdenpassive is the most frequent by far. It conveys a process and is normally the equivalent of the English passive, e.g. ‘he was praised’ er wurde gelobt. It employs the auxiliary werden and the PAST PARTICIPLE of the main verb. It has the same six tenses as the active, illustrated here with the verb loben ‘praise’. There is no imperative form: WERDEN-PASSIVE

NB In the passive, the form worden (without ge-) is used as the past participle of werden. NB Take care not to confuse the present passive (ich werde gelobt) with the future active (ich werde loben) (see 6.6).
