LETTER FROM THE EDITOR S

pring, a time for new beginnings! A time to plant and delight in new flowers after a visit to collect what provides eye candy for our homes from Scott’s Nursery. The past few months have been an eye opener for me. As flowers need sunshine, food, water and perhaps a bit of love, so do we. Mind . Body . Spirit. Our minds are so powerful, if we knew just how powerful, we would never have another negative thought again. Our bodies are the shell given to us by our creator, the better we take care of them the longer they will last. Our Spiritual growth is the key. It is the most difficult to comprehend, and the most rewarding. When we find Inner Peace, learn how to keep it in our lives, we begin to feel a shift within our growth. As the sun shines on our necks, as we watch our children play and grow this summer, as we enjoy time with family and friends at backyard bbq’s, let us take in each moment. I will breathe in each moment and remind myself to be present. Deborah Spilman

I

like to be a little trendy every season. As a mother of a preteen daughter, I don’t want to go out full trend but adding the latest colour, accessory or item is something I look forward to every new fashion season. So I was a more than dismayed to see one of the biggest trends this spring are jeans with prints in large floral patterns. Already celebrities everywhere are displaying this new fashion trend. but I’ve spent the better part of 30 years trying to minimize my backside and have even stooped low enough (no pun intended) to wear the ultra low rise jeans that make my bum look REALLY small. This leaves me wondering how in the world I’d be able to pull off a jean design that seems intent on highlighting the very body part I’ve been trying to hide! Well, one of the tricks I’ve discovered to wearing this new trend is to pick a jean that’s sturdy, with a basic background colour like white, dark blue or black. Choose a pattern that’s oversized but not overwhelming. Be sure to pair these trendy jeans with a neutral top that either enhances the background jean colour or matches it exactly.

ike many people, we watch TV every night. The annoying kids shows compete with some tasteful reality shows, ocean documentaries and the odd sit com. And we watch hockey, golf and football as a family. However, it goes without saying that all of this TV viewing frequently requires some ducking out of explanations. You know what I’m referring to, those commercials that elicit questions such as “Mommy, why didn’t that man go golfing with his friends?” Now that the kids are older the response of “He wanted to stay home with his wife.” just piques their curiosity even further. I don’t know about you but I’m running out of appropriate answers for the 10 year olds that make these inquiries. I’m also running out of patience about the canned applause after every snotty comment on certain tween espisodes and the apalling lack of taste and decorum on those same shows when it comes to dealing with everyday problems. The nasty tones are starting to pervade the dialogue of my kids and I’m faced with a dull outlook on the upcoming summer vacation when TV watching seems to double. Besides banning this entertainment all together and being the bad guy (once again), I’ve decided to let the kids think they are in control by allowing 1 or 2 favourite shows per day. Then I’m shutting off the TV and ushering everyone outside to enjoy some fresh summer breezes.

“I had one session and loved the experience and decided to take the course. I Love making clients feel better and helping them to heal. Reflexology is a natural, non-invasive healing art that is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet, hands and ears that correspond to every part of the body. Through pressure on these reflexes with hands, mainly thumbs, Reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation, opens the flow in blocked nerves and helps promote the natural functioning and healing of the body. Studies have shown Reflexology reduces depression and helps with anxiety. All ages can benefit from Reflexology, even those with cancer, and diabetes. 16 studies in 7 countries have shown healing body benefits due to the increased blood flow and relaxation associated with Reflexology. While pregnant, reflexology will keep the body relaxed and stress free, and can help with delivery. Reflexology is a complement to standard medical care.

E

veryone has a story to tell. ….mine would have been a pretty typical teenager girl’s story….until Friday February 4th 2011 the day that changed my story forever.

On Friday February 4th 2011 I was airlifted to the IWK, after having a CAT scan. Dr Bulleid and her team at the DECH found a large mass in my brain. It was the last thing my family thought of and at that moment it must have been the worst moment of their lives. No one knew if I would live or die. The mass appeared to be so large, the swelling so traumatic and my ability to remain conscious was becoming less and less. On Sunday February 6th 2011, while millions were cheering on their favorite team at the Super Bowl, my family, friends and many strangers as I understand it were praying hard that Team McNeely would win against Team Brain Tumour. Lucky for me, after a long 12 hour emergency brain surgery, my amazing most talented Neurosurgeon Dr Dan McNeely scored the final touchdown and won against Team Brain Tumour! He removed almost 95% of my tumour, lessened the fluid buildup that was injuring my brain and most importantly he saved my life that day! But my story does not end there. This past February 24th 2012, I underwent another 10 hour brain surgery to have a very complicated aneurism clipped and to remove the final two pieces of my brain tumour. Preparing for this surgery was different for me because as I was fully aware of what was happening. Having to walk myself in the surgery room was a moment I’ll never forget! You just never know how strong you really are till you are faced with a moment like that! What helps me get through it all, is learning to live by this quote written by Vivian Greene:

“Life is not waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain” I know that everyone has their “life storms” they have to deal with. Mine is called a brain tumour. Lucky for me I am not dancing alone in this storm. I cannot say thank you enough to Dr Dan McNeely and everyone at the AWESOME IWK Hospital. I would not be here today if it were not for him and the dedicated team of health care professionals there! I also owe a lot of gratitude to Dr Leckey and everyone at the Stan Cassidy Center. Many people in Fredericton do not even know how lucky we are to have this first class facility right here in our city! Last but not least, a HUGE thank you goes out to my family, my MANY friends and EVERYONE who has thought of me during this very difficult time!!!!! I know that there are hundreds of you because I’ve lost count of the cards, emails, get well wishes and the many prayers that have been sent my way! A million thank yous are being sent from me to ALL of you for caring about a girl like me!!! If there is one thing that I hope you take away from reading a little bit about my story is that life is full of storms ….. when it seems like yours just won’t lighten up, find your own way and dance through it! Remember you’re never alone……I’ll be dancing right alongside of you in my favorite color purple!!!!

“Breakfast Berry Cup” -1 cup Greek yogurt -1 cup fresh berries -2 tsp sesame seeds -2 tsp flaxseeds -pinch of cinnamon -drizzle of honey

Before

(1) Don’t ever skip breakfast. “Break-the-fast” is the most

important meal of the day. It starts your brain function, helps to set your metabolic rate for the day and research shows it may help to ward off certain chronic illnesses. Breakfast should include a healthy protein source like eggs, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, and fiber to help create a healthy digestive system.

(2) Don’t eat food you can’t “understand.” Food with numerous ingredients, additives, preservative and/or colorings are extremely unhealthy and we don’t really fully understand to what extent these foods are harming us. Apples and broccoli don’t have food labels. Eat from the trees, seas, gardens and grounds as much as you can! This is real food. Eat the rainbow. Lots of color = lots of nutrients. (3) Drink MOSTLY water. Water is a vital source to

maintaining all aspects of health. Your brain needs it, your bowel needs it, you heart needs it…YOU NEED IT! Don’t flavor it, add stuff to it, just drink it…cause its good for…and it will help you live longer.

After

(4) MAKE time to cook. You don’t have to be a world

renown chef to prepare a healthy meal for you and your family, but we have lost the art of gathering and preparing real food. We ARE used to picking up fake, highly processed stuff at a drive through. Start small with recipes with only a few healthy ingredients and work at it. Sit down and chew your food slowly, talk about the day with your family, I guarantee you will benefit from the practice of preparing and eating home cooked meals as a family.

(5) Find something FUN that involves moving your body. We all know we are supposed to exercise…but do we really enjoy it? Find something you can do that exerts some energy, whether it be a round of tennis, joining a walking club/learn to run program or going dancing with your spouse once a week, my theory is “You move it or you lose it, but you gotta have fun doin’ it!” Advertise in shop fredericton. I

’ve tried my hand at composting and although it’s not hard, the inconvenient weekly trudge through the snow in the winter to dump my small composting bin into my backyard composter is a bit icky to say the least. Especially without the water hose hooked up to rinse out the container. But, in my neighbourhood, everyone was very keen on composting and I decided to do my part for the environment. One composting enthusiast tried to convince me to vermicompost throughout the winter, but I draw the line at worms in garbage bins in my garage! Then, as quickly as I began, I somehow stopped composting. I figured compostable garbage would decompose anyway in the landfill. But, you’d be surprised to learn that despite the composting nature of some household waste, once dumped in a landfill it produces methane gas. Mostly because of the nature of how landfills are managed. The waste material gets compacted and piled on top and so decreases oxygen loving bacteria to the waste. It then increases the methane producing bacteria. But,

backyard composting , when done properly by regular watering and turning of the waste, creates the rich soil that replenishes our lands. And, it doesn’t produce the methane gases that are harming our environment. Here are some tips to get you composting: 1. select a level area with good water drainage for your backyard composter 2. feed your backyard composter equal amounts of greens (materials high in nitrogen such as grass clipping and fruit peels) and browns (materials high in carbon such as dry leaves and paper) and top with a one-inch layer of soil. Always start your layers with brown materials. 3. bury any food scraps in the centre of your pile 4. keep your pile damp and turn it to add air every 2 or 3 weeks Other items you made not realize you can compost: pet fur, dryer lint, shredded worn cotton or silk clothing, fireplace ashes, nail clippings and stale bread.
