“Photography District- Sketching With Lights” is the official logo for the current semester under Digital Photography subject. The underlying meaning of district can be defined as “Our territory to express ourselves in creating pure arts.” The building shape like meaning in one roof we can have everything in one roof just like in UniKL MIIT city campus building. Moreover, “Sketching with Lights” serves another meaning in photography, which means to draw or to sketch with lights. By using the term sketching, we roughly sketch on papers just to present the basic ideas. This is also applicable in photography practices, whereby we capture the scene roughly while manipulating the rough idea through editing and refinement processes.

HEAD OF ANIMATION MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MIIT) 38 students have finally reached to the ultimate point; they went through 14 weeks before they reach to the final part of their studies. How time flies when we are all enjoying it! This Dec 2019, lead us all to experience the exhibition of the best from future students. A lot of style and presentation that is shown by our photo students from Commercial Fashion & Portraiture to Photo Journalism to Fine Art photography, and Advertising. This combination will create great exhibition to value and appreciate. A lot of research, ideas and techniques have been accomplished to produce this creative and innovative artwork. These are works by students that has been supervised by Mr Amad (Digital Photography Lecturer). These students have put their heart, spirit and soul in the making of this creative artwork. This shows that the students are capable to take any challenge in their profession from this industry.

The conventional photography to digital gives quite a vast impact to the photo industry. Anyone could be called a photographer with just buying a digital camera. This are able them to develop nice pictures. But what is the different between us and them? Obviously 14 weeks learning experience. You will learn technical studio lighting, you will become an image maker, and you will produce an artwork with the understanding of research. This is an experience that triggers the mind to think, test and explore with experimentation and at the end exhibit their expertise of their own interest in photography. I personally hope they are going to find what they are looking for in the real world out there. This chapter of their lives will be a beautiful memory to be remembered. A new chapter will begin and it will definitely be very demanding but still a future to be enjoyed. Wishing all our future graduate, best of luck!

SIR AHMAD FAHMI HJ MOHAMAD

LECTURER OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (MIIT)

“Perak: Journey to Remember”

“A good photograph is one that communicates a fact, touches the heart and leaves the viewer a changed person for having seen it. It is, in a word, effective.” — Irving Penn “Perak: Journey to Remember” IPOH is Perak’s finest colonial architecture stands side by side with rickety kedai kopi (coffee shops) in chameleonic Ipoh. The capital of Perak is flanked by towering white cliffs, some with magnificent cave temples pocketed in the limestone. Sliced into old and new towns by the Kinta River, Ipoh charms with its street art and street food – rather like a languid version of George Town. Ipoh is more than a gateway to the Cameron Highlands or a way station end route to Penang. Shaped by the 1920s tinmining boom, Ipoh’s wealth and population ebbed away after the mines’ closure. But an old-town renaissance has revived its time-worn buildings into boutiques, hotels and gorgeously kitsch cafes. Amidst these seemingly random ideas is the same desire of each photographer to tell his or her own stories of the city. TAIPING, Perak’s second-largest town is defined by water and greenery.Locals laud it as the ‘City of Peace’ for trailblazing Malaysia’s first museum, first railway and first newspapers in English, Malay and Tamil. But it’s Taiping’s ‘Rain City’ title that has stuck. Taiping has the biggest volume of rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia: all the better for its verdant lake gardens. KUALA KANGSAR, the epicenter for some of Malaysia’s defining moments, Kuala Kangsar (KK) is the royal seat of Perak. Orbiting its teeming town Centre are some of the state’s most lavish constructions, including converted palaces and an impressive

gilt-domed mosque. In a lesser state of finery are buildings dating to KK’s colonial past. The town was the first foothold of the British, who moved to control the peninsula by installing Residents at the royal courts here in the 1870s. KK was also the birthplace of Malaysia’s rubber industry and site of the first durbar (conference of Malay sultans) in 1897. The growth of Ipoh and Taiping over the past century has left KK lagging behind, but it’s a worthy day trip. This body of works contained in this exhibition is the outcome of continuous class discussion, sharing and reflection among the photographers during the past 4 months. After the completion of 14 weeks’ class & 3 days’ trip to Perak, these 38 young talented photographers, who wanted to share their own personal vision of the city, came together to form the “Perak: Journey to Remember” project. I as a photography lecturer would like to invite my students to come join us on a journey and exploration relation with PERAK as a whole. Together we shall discover the city, the historic, the light, the myths, the foods, the place, the arts and the peoples of the city, the vivid beauty of colors culture & heritages. I hope that we will enjoy the exhibition and feel the connection that we had experienced with PERAK. We have come to realize that we are all connected with each other as brothers and sisters, and with city. We have also realized that as photographer and designers, all our inspirations and talents are gifts from Allah swt.

Loken Market is an open market that sells all kinds of goods, especially old and antique goods. Hence there is also someone who calls it Ipoh rusty Market. Loken is the nickname given by visitors since long before because of taking in the name of Lam Look King Bazaar at Jalan Admiral near the site of the rust market origin. Then transferred to the edge of the Kinta River. Now the Rusty Market is located along Horley Street. Meaningful in the history of Loken Market has moved three times. The Loken market is now given a new breath called Memory Lane. But the population is still compatible with the Loken Market. It’s a unique name, it’s also a local nostalgia. Instagram : muqriaqil Three days trip to Perak taught me a lot of thing. On the 1st day we go to Gua Tempurung & Kelly’s Castle before we reach Ipoh city. I was intrigued by the scenery shown to me. My main objective for this photography trip is to experiment with long exposures photo and painting with light. So, when I was at Gua Tempurung I was thinking how I’m going to that in a cave with my RGB light and tripod. I waited for my classmate to walk first so that I can setup my tripod and shoot. I managed to get few shoots inside the cave and I thought I could shoot on all landmarks of Perak and that’s when I was wrong. When we were at Kelly’s Castle, I tried to do the same thing and I’ve failed miserably so I thought I just shoot at night in Ipoh City where we were staying at night. The shoot at Ipoh City took us until 4am with the help of my friends. Thanks to them I managed to get few shots that night. It has taught me to stay positive and don’t ever give up. Light Dancing in Ipoh – Night view of Landmarks in Ipoh City and I’ve added a light streak looks like the light is dancing at the night. When people are sleeping, the light in the city is dancing till the morning then they sleep in the morning and people come out of their shelter.

First, I would like to highlight that it was the first trip for me to Perak, and the first ever I would done “photography-experiment” using DSLR by exploring the city. Obviously, I am a noob I would say, but what I’m trying to share is, the trip itself help me throughout this whole project. I learned a lot. I observed my classmate’s artwork, I did experiment on every single kind of angle, trying out so hard, and I think I’d already gave my best. It’s a pleasure having a personal time for you to learn and produced something new by yourself.

One because I never been to a cave and others because it has a majestic view and I was amazed. Overall, the trip was exciting and I learn a lot of photography skills and managed to take a lot of great pictures in Perak. Caverna is a title that was given to this piece as it means cave in English. The pictures was took at Gua Tempurung, Perak. I was amaze by the cave itself, a majestic world hidden inside a dark huge hole. When I stepped inside the cave, it’s like entering a whole new world and I try to portray that feeling through my artwork. The group of trip class was conducted by our photography lecturer which is Sir Amad, he gave us a lot of knowledge about photography and how to take a good picture. We went to many beautiful places specialty on Perak such as Gua Tempurung, Ubudiah Mosque, Perak Museum and take a picture for our final project. It’s a good experience to go to other places, visit and take memories as much as we want. Besides, we can get close with each group of class and adding some new friends. I am not good at taking pictures but I am in process to get better. I hope this opportunity will appear again so we can learn and have fun together. It is Journey to Remember. My artwork was basically more on white side. All the places have many colors and it shines but we do not have to forget about the basic. White color brings a meaning of perfection, an inherently positive color so the title relatable with my artwork. I have three pictures that more white at Ubudiah Mosque and Perak Museum. It is simple concept of the building that I took picture for my final project while going on Photography Trip and it is rare to get a picture with pure white unless it is edited to black and white.

Visiting Famous locations in Perak has been giving me an insight and the strive to capture pictures of things that I would never get to take of in Kuala Lumpur. Spending 3 days vigorously taking pictures at many beautiful locations has made me improve my sense of taking pictures with the help of the things that I have learned from class. Even though tired, I can say without a doubt enjoyed every moment of it as you cant get the experience there anywhere. My artworks mainly focuses on journalism which captures the picturesque life style of the wonderful people of Perak who are everyday working hard to sustain their daily lives. My artwork journalism that I have chosen are located in Pasar Karat, Port Weld and Lake View. My artwork captures from young to old working hard to get good income in their life.

The trip to Perak for 3 days and 2 nights was very special for me as I was able to visit some of the historic and famous places in Perak even though I was from Perak. The place that had the most impact on me was Kellie’s Castle in Elephant Rock. Apart from that, the city center of Ipoh is also interesting because the architecture of the building is still intact.

It was still a great experience for me even though I had been to some of the places in the past. The one that catches my eyes during the trip was during the nighttime in which I was captivated by Perak’s street. Most of my pictures are from urban areas and it shows the emptiness and quiet streets of Perak during the night or day.

There are a lot of things happen in Ipoh and being one of the photography subject student is such a luck. The trip was one of the most voted places by all of the student. Journey to Ipoh is awesome and cool, because everybody was in the mood and went according the plan. Even though we are really tired throughout the day, but we successfully to complete all of the task given by Mr. Amad. Moreover, this trip gives me a lot of knowledge regardless friendship, responsibility, fellowship and photography technic. It is encouraging me to take a lot of pictures as it is going to sharpen my skills. Among all the places, I really enjoy the moment we were at Ipoh town. To be honest, I enjoyed the urban lifestyle especially the one with the old buildings where we can see the mixture of old and new buildings were located in one place. I learn a lot about street photography, how is the angel should be, how is the perfect timing to shoot and many more. Thanks to Mr. Amad for the chances that have given to me and my friends. Am pretty sure we will never get the moment again.

I will not forget Ipoh that traveled for 2 nights and 3 days. Ipoh Perak was a beautiful city. It had a different charm than Kuala Lumpur. Ipoh Perak was a harmony between nature and architecture, and above all. one of my photos, mural street was beautiful with many colors. And I remember Gua tempurung. Gua tempurung is said to be the largest and longest limestone cave in Malaysia. It was steeper and harder than I thought, but I felt as if I was being rewarded for the beautiful appearance of the cave. I came to Malaysia as an exchange student to see an area that is not easily seen in Korea. And this trip was a new experience for me and I enjoyed it.

I think there are many things in one word of travel, such as memories, people, and emotions. The 3 days in Ipoh, Perak really made me realize the word ‘travel’. To be honest, I didn’t want to go to Ipoh because I did not adapt fully to Malaysia at first. Ironically, however, Ipoh travel was the cornerstone of my adjustment to Malaysia. When I took pictures and searched for my photo identity, it felt as if I was getting to know myself a little more profoundly.. Strange but new, so very excited. Through this trip, I learned the courage to challenge myself without being frightened by new things. Also, I‘m still exploring to define myself. Thank you very much for the trip to Ipoh that made all this possible. I ask myself again. “Why not try?” My works symbolize the fictional world and the real world. The world you see with your camera is never real, what about the world you see with your cell phone? Aren’t we looking at the world from a narrow perspective now? When we come out of the world of cell phones and the world of cameras, we must find the essence. It means, you can meet the real “self.”

On the first day, I didn’t get much sleep the night before because I was busy completing a lot of my assignment since I will be busy with photography during the weekend. I was sleepy, yet excited and full of energy. As we head off to Perak, I slept in the bus to get some rest before the real work begin. We arrived at Gua Tempurung and honestly, it was my first time there even though I am a Malaysian. I was so amazed by the beauty of nature and took multiple of photos. But my body doesn’t do well when it comes to physical activities such as walking too long, standing too long, climbing up stairs and so on because of my health condition. I couldn’t go to the top and went back down because I started feeling faint and suffocated. We went to Kellie’s Castle afterwards and a many other places on the second day such as Taiping Lake Garden, Ipoh Town, Gunung Lang, Bandar Agacia, Victoria Bridge and so on. Overall, it was a fun and amazing experience for me. I created a lot of unforgettable memories with amazing people. I learn amazing tips to get nicer photos and learn a lot of new things that I didn’t know about photography. I even realized I started to take better photos than before in my daily life. It was an amazing experience!

Most people do not realize that doors and windows are not there just to be opened and closed, but also to be admired. For my artworks, you can see the objects are popped up and livelier after some editing so that the viewer can feel and see more clearly of the texture and doing some self-interpreting of the photos.

Even though I did not walk to the very end (because I’m not that energetic, I cry), but it was a great experience. The Ipoh nightlife is different from Kuala Lumpur, there’s not much of restaurants or shops open after 11pm-12am. But meh. Anyway, during this trip, we get to know our classmate better and also we created a bond together with our lecturer sir Amad. It’s tiring but yeah, it is a Journey to Remember! One of those things is to make sure that you have a plan ready before going on your trip or else you’re going to end up spending most of your time thinking of what to do. Time is limited but you need time to capture the perfect shot so next time before I go for a photography session, I would do my research to plan on what, where, when and how to shoot the subject. Mood (Bandar Agacia) – Agacia is a beautiful and colourful town. From the outside it sends us a message of excitement and liveliness from the mood of its colours, but upon stepping into the town we would realize that it is a dull place contradicting to its looks, giving us a different kind of mood.

The town is over 100 years old and has been very well preserved throughout that time. What made my visit to the place so special is it’s the beautiful sceneries everywhere we went. It wasn’t just the sights, though, that made this visit such an unforgettable experience. This town offers a feast for the senses! All around me were sounds of pure joy, passion and life. We’ve gone for a trip to Perak Darul Ridzuan from 4th to 6th October for our Final Project in Photography class. We went to quite interesting places there from Ipoh, to Kuala Kangsar, to Taiping. I have never been to any of these places, and I’m easily excited, so this trip is very fun for me. My most favourite places there are either Gunung Lang and Pasar Karat. I love Gunung Lang because it was really massive of a place to go and walk around, there’s even a mini zoo in there, and all this could be accessed by paying RM5 for a boat ride there, a two way trip too. Pasar Karat is just because I have a deep love towards antique stuff. At first my theme was antique or retro bikes and bicycles, but it turns out harder when there’re not a lot of antique bikes, only some cycles, and they are pretty thin to make a good looking subject for pictures. So I just take other pictures but still have the Fine Art genre in mind. I try to put calmness, clarity, and the feeling where everything is at their place just right. From stairs, to abandoned places where weeds start to overtake, bridges, etc. I would like to invoke some calmness into the viewers’ heart and say ‘hey, world ain’t such a mess like we thought it is’.

The nature can draw for us, it has the skillof art which human cant make it but the lens can capture it. For us the nature shy thats why we need to search deeply for its art skill. Asking the nature about the fine arts of it to lead us to the spot which it been hiding it deeply inside the nature with cover of sands or trees. Cavses, mountains, deep to the rivers, we have to knock doors advantuary to ask the nature about it skills. Choosing Gua Tempurung cave was one of the nature door that i knocked to let me expose the skill of the nature to it to human and to tell them how much we have to appreciate the nature arts.
