All the signs are there whether it’s nature with the blossom appearing on the cherry trees or the constant adverts in the newspapers encouraging me to buy a new lawnmower. For the first time in my life I find myself taking an interest in both. I used to think that gardening ability was something you were born with. Certainly in the 10 years that I have been a homeowner I have not seen the garden as anything more than a responsibility; a lawn that had to be mown and borders that needed to be weeded. Both tasks were completed under duress rather than with any sense of enjoyment. But then something changed inside me. I am now quite happy to spend an hour scouring the lawn for dandelions and own one of those little two pronged forks for removing the weeds, roots and all. I find myself standing in the kitchen the morning after mowing the grass and tidying the borders, and taking a sense of pride at how neat and tidy it looks. I can’t remember at what point this transformation happened. It has crept over me like Japanese knotweed and now I can’t get rid of it. It might have been the arrival of the new shed last summer. The new shed that still has that lovely new shed smell and makes me smile and feel comfortable every time I walk in. Maybe that aroma awakened something deep inside me? Or perhaps it was my 7 year old daughter who announced that she would like to try and grow her own vegetables that made me subconsciously want to “man-up” and learn a few garden skills that every dad should know. I will confess to quite enjoying the conversations with my father about gardening. Dad always had an allotment when I was little and although he gave it up due to other commitments some time ago he still tends to a decent sized vegetable garden at home. Talking about the garden has actually brought us closer together because having lived away from home and been independent since I was 19 this is one of the few moments where he feels needed because I’m seeking advice (the other being carpentry). The latest gem was that when you plant carrots you should always plant a row of spring onion in front of them. Apparently the carrot fly doesn’t like spring onion and so it flies up over them and doesn’t come back down in time to spot the carrots. Not even discussing carrot fly psychology seems odd to me now. It’s just a shame that I have developed this love of gardening at a point in my life where I can’t do it for too long before my back starts to ache. And don’t get me started on my knees…. You can catch Simon on Wave 105 weekdays from 1pm – 4pm and on the Sunday breakfast show until 10am.
