As teeth whitening treatments are rapidly becoming widely available it is time to shed some expert light on a very confusing subject. Teeth whitening does come in many shapes and forms, it is available on the internet, at the hairdresser’s, at the beauty salon, and many other places. Despite all these options, the dental practice remains the best and safest place to undergo teeth whitening. Let’s find out why. Can anyone do teeth whitening? The whitening technique is not for everyone. There are some situations where whitening is not recommended. This is best assessed during a prewhitening consultation with a cosmetic dentist. Is it safe? The whitening techniques and products used at the dentist are proven products with a good track record. Outside of the dental practice there is no control over the products in use, and their safety. It is important to note that whitening products only need a cosmetic license, which basically is just an allergy test, as opposed to a more serious drug license for conventional dental and medical products. EU legislation makes 10 to 16% carbamide peroxide legal, however the relevant legal body in the UK does not currently enforce the law at the moment regarding any other whitening products which do not comply.

How does it work? There are many different techniques available. The British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry advises the use of tried and tested ways of whitening teeth (i.e. up to 16% carbamide peroxide), which is why we use a tray based whitening system with 10-16% carbamide peroxide at our practice. Sometimes we need to use stronger concentrations to achieve the desired results.

How long does the whitening last? Normally the new whiter colour of your teeth keeps for quite a while. If you smoke or drink lots of coffee, red wine or tea your teeth may darken slightly. Some patients do a top up treatment.
