Career guidance

Academic life

In the Upper Sixth, some initial Life Education lessons in the autumn term are devoted to completing UCAS applications. Old Emanuels (our alumni) come to talk to our students about their university experiences, offering an unparalleled peer insight into life at university. In the spring term, students are advised on how to make ‘firm’ and ‘insurance’ choices, budgeting, finance and coping with university life. On A level results day, staff are available in school to celebrate with students and to provide advice and moral support. Staff also help and advise students who need to navigate the UCAS clearing and adjustment processes.

Career guidance

Students have access to the latest software at every level, comprehensive printed material on careers and higher education as well as impartial careers guidance from experts. We enable students to make informed choices when it comes to university in the UK or abroad and the expanding market of degree apprenticeships, as well as school leaver programmes.

ECON

The Emanuel Careers and Opportunities Network (ECON), run by the Emanuel Parents’ Association (EPA) and the careers department, allows students to message Emanuel parents who work in an industry in which they have an interest. Parents volunteer their expertise in many different ways including answering specific career questions, offering interview practice and CV writing advice or providing work experience and internship opportunities.

Satellite events

We organise networking events in conjunction with the development department to give our students an insight into the breadth of opportunities in industries. Students hear from industry experts and speak to OEs and parents who work in areas such as media, technology and finance.

Innovation & entrepreneurship

Sixth Form students are encouraged to take part in the Europewide Young Enterprise competition. Starting at a very local level, teams are eliminated through a series of rounds, competing with approximately 950 UK schools each year. Emanuel has a good record and has been within one round of the national finals for the last two years. Only 14 schools make it to the national finals, so we are hopefully on the cusp of something great!

The Industry Champions programme gives Lower Sixth students access to an expert in a field of employment that the student is interested in. They have three sessions with their Industry Champion and participate in industry-related challenges that help give them a better idea about what the workplace is like. The programme culminates in an all-day ‘Entrepreneur and You’ event in which students set up their own mini businesses and pitch their ideas to the Industry Champions for potential investment.

Internships

Our parent body generously offers internships at their companies exclusively to students in the Upper Sixth. These include working in the financial sector, international commerce, technology, recruitment and marketing. The formalised and robust application process helps prepare our students for challenging scenarios they may face in the wider world.

I’ve learnt countless values, from the importance of reliability and time management, to attributes such as dedication.
