s we move into our 26th season of polo in Rancho Santa Fe, and over a century of polo in San Diego, we are asking for your support so that we can continue this tradition. Times have changed, and we can no longer link the Polo Club facilities and the club’s future to a single sport, but rather a balance of sports playing on our fields. Our mission is to be a good neighbor and steward of the environmentally sensitive open space in the San Dieguito River area. Situated between the Del Mar Racetrack, Del Mar Horsepark, and the ranches of Rancho Santa Fe, the area the club occupies is a strategic part of equestrian use in San Diego. In years past, the Polo Club has had primary usage of the land which is leased from the City of San Diego. Going forward, other youth sports will play a greater role in the use of the “polo fields.” Surf Soccer has provided significant athletic opportunities for many local young athletes, and the Surf Cup tournaments are internationally recognized as premiere soccer tournaments. The success of San Diego Surf Soccer has had multiple positive impacts on our community and local businesses, and so we’d like to ensure that soccer, and other sports can continue to utilize these great fields. Rotating both polo and youth sports’ activities on our fields results in better playing turf for everyone involved.

In addition, the growth of polo here has also been remarkable. On Sundays, several thousand spectators line the fields to watch local residents and international players display their talents. Numerous events bring out families each Sunday. We have hosted many charitable events over the years including Kids Korps, Scripps Hospital, Saving Horses, TERI Inc., Multiple Sclerosis, Sentebale, Naval Special Warfare Foundation, and more. At the present time, we are focused upon securing a lease renewal with the City of San Diego, and are actively seeking community support to continue our polo program and combined youth sports here. There may be certain challenges and obstacles that we’ll face this year and so we are asking our polo community for help. This year, more than ever, we need your support, so please help spread the word to our Mayor and City Council Members to “Save Polo.” On behalf of the Founding Members of the San Diego Polo Club, I thank you for your continued support.

USPA Dear Fellow Polo Enthusiasts, What a year it’s been and it’s only May! I wanted to commend the San Diego Polo Club on all the hard work they have been doing ON and OFF the field! From the looks of their beautifully designed website it seems like they really put some effort into creating a site that takes the viewer from start to finish and gets them excited about what’s going on with the club and the sport. I’m sure you all have been seeing and hearing more and more about social media and how it impacts anything and everything. San Diego Polo Club has a presence on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter which are not only wonderful ways to gain exposure, but also encapsulates the very thing Polo needs, attention! Also, through these social portals it shows others that polo is not just for the elite, but for all. SENTEBALE SDPC IS HONORED TO HOST PRINCE HARRY’S CHARITY EVENT. BY MORGAN WOOD In April of 2006, Prince Harry, along with Prince Sessio of Lesotho, Africa, launched the Sentebale charity, meaning “forget me not” in Sesotho. Today the charity works with local partners and grass-roots movements in the Lesotho community to provide at-risk children health and education services that will change their lives for the better. In order to ensure the ongoing success of their mission, Prince Harry has arranged a number of exciting events in the USA to raise awareness and support for the Sentebale organization and its work in Lesotho. This year, the San Diego Polo Club will hold the first annual Sentebale Charity Match in support of this great cause and organization. The schedule will include exciting polo matches, an African music and dance presentation, a silent auction and an introduction to the Sentebale charity. This event is a fantastic way for friends and family to reconnect, experience an engaging sport, and to help change a part of the world for the better. In the few short years that his charity has been operating, Prince Harry already sees positive results, “It’s really encouraging to see how things have improved but there’s obviously still masses of problems; food is still the main issue,” he says. The San Diego Polo Club will continue to host events to build local and national awareness for Sentebale. We plan to have Prince Harry play at our club in the near future. 22

ALIVE WITH PAGEANTRY: A CENTURY-LONG HISTORY OF POLO BY VANESSA SHAPIRO Last year we asked you to join us in celebrating our 25th “Silver” Anniversary but our history actually goes back much farther. While somewhat unknown, the City of San Diego has a long-held tradition of Polo. Our story is rich and vibrant, and dates back to the start of the twentieth century.

export business out of San Francisco and in 1887 he decided to expand that business to San Diego. He made a trip to visit the area and was instantly captivated by Coronado. At the time the island was a real “playground for the wealthy” and to live there meant to live among the names of the famous. Spreckels started investing in the area, most notably in the emerging Hotel Del Coronado, and eventually he became the hotel’s second owner.

Many polo enthusiasts credit San Diego as the location for the first significant polo match in California, and they consider John D. Spreckels the “grandfather” of the sport. He was one of three sons, born in San Francisco to immigrants of Dutch descent and he made his fortune in sugar production. He also operated an import-

Hoping to entice well-to-do visitors to his hotel, he built the Coronado Country Club, which ran four city blocks. The Country Club was a two-story redwood structure with glassenclosed balconies from which matches could be viewed, a dining area, and a library. There were three polo fields, an 18-hole golf

course, tennis courts and an arena for national horse show competitions. All of these activities were open to hotel guests, and Spreckels hoped that these attractions would draw more visitors to his property. In 1906, Spreckels sponsored the first major polo tournament - importing a team of English Lords to play against his American team which was comprised of Naval officers. This match garnered significant attention, and Coronado quickly became known for the quality of its fields, the perfect climate, and most importantly for the skilled players and horses it was attracting. Many prestigious polo tournaments were held on Coronado and over time it became known as the “Meadow Brook of the West,” in reference to the famous polo club on Long Island. Every January, the best players and teams would travel from around the world to compete for three months alongside millionaires and movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin. The grandstand often held the nobility and aristocracy of Europe as well as Americans of great wealth and distinction, and the polo field quickly became the center of high society life and attracted the “who’s who of the era.” During this opulent time many matches were played on the island, the most notable of which was the “Polo Challenge.” It was inaugurated by John D. Spreckels in 1909 at which time he commissioned a twofoot silver trophy that eventually became known as the “Spreckels Cup.” The trophy was engraved with the names of each year’s winners and it carried the legacy of many of the greatest polo players of that time.

The Spreckels Cup was played from 19091921, with the exception of the years of World War I, and the last team to capture the trophy was the famous Midwick Country Club team led by Carleton F. Burke. When he passed in 1962, the Spreckels Cup, as well as many of his other trophies and mementos were donated by his widow to the California Thoroughbred Association. Not fully understanding the historic significance that the trophy held, it was stored away in a box and soon forgotten, as was a part of our polo history.

SAN DIEGO HAS A LONG-HELD TRADITION OF POLO. OUR STORY IS RICH AND VIBRANT AND DATES BACK TO THE START OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.

Interest in polo started to decrease with the emergence of World War I. There existed less of a European influence and participation, notably amongst the English royalty. Professional teams had to be brought in to replace the English presence and this significantly increased the club’s expenses. World War I greatly diminished San Diegans’ interest in the sport, however, it was the Second World War that permanently ended Coronado’s “polo era.” During those years, Coronado saw the exit of “big money” from the island and, when the war finally came to an end, the Coronado Country Club was sold to developers who quickly transformed the area into housing tracts. Overnight, the history of polo in San Diego was put on hold and, while the sport continued to be played throughout the county, it would take over 40 years before “the Sport of Kings” would find a permanent home again in San Diego. REVIVING THE PAGEANTRY Polo found a resurgence in the 1970s and 1980s. At that time, Willis Allen, (Willis Allen Real Estate Company), recognized the need to have a polo club in San Diego again. He began searching for a location in Rancho Santa Fe with his son-in-law Harry Collins and his grandson Chris Collins. Allen had a long connection to the sport and in the 1930s he played arena polo five nights a week at the old showground on Coronado Island. After years of tireless work, Allen and his team found a new home for polo and, in 1987, the Rancho Santa Fe Polo Club opened its doors. Allen threw in the first ball on the same fields where we play today and thus began our second polo story in San Diego. Over the past twenty-six years, our club has welcomed countless players and fans from around the world. In 1995, our name was officially changed to the San Diego Polo Club. In 1988, the glory of the Spreckels Cup found its way home as well. In the fall of the previous year, Julie Mulvihill-Mayer organized an effort to locate some of the coveted trophies from the Coronado Country Club. With information from a Historian at the Coronado Historical Society, she was able to locate the Spreckels Cup, which at the time was being used as a punch bowl for events at the California Breeders Association. However, with the help of Joseph E. Jessop (Jessops Jewelers), the trophy was restored to its previous splendor. Every season since, we have filled the cup to the brim with red roses and presented it to the winning team of the Spreckels Cup Tournament. It is one of the many tangible links that connects our current club to the “Golden Age” of polo. The names of our current champions are engraved alongside the polo greats of the early twentieth century.

A NEW BUT UNCERTAIN FUTURE Polo is an integral part of San Diego’s story. Our history in this area is significant and longstanding - longer than the Padres, Chargers and any other local sports teams’ combined. 26

In years past, the San Diego Polo Club has primarily used the 50+ acres of land, which we lease from the City of San Diego. However, going forward we feel it is critical that other youth sports play a greater role in the utilization of the land. We would like to ensure that soccer, lacrosse, cricket, rugby and other athletics are able to continue to have access to these fields for their respective sports. In addition, our club, as well as the Surf Cup, soccer and several lacrosse tournaments have had multiple positive impacts on the San Diego economy and local businesses. In 2009, the Surf Soccer Cup alone brought in over $20 million dollars in revenue to the city - a huge economic impact for the San Diego area. Between hotels, parking, concessions, horse feed, bales of hay, and well over a hundred seasonal staff, the San Diego Polo Club has a profound and continuous impact upon the local economy. Polo is a noble sport with a noble purpose and we have always seen ourselves as stewards of the community and of the environment. We have worked hard to help maintain, protect and preserve the endangered species and open space in the San Dieguito River Valley. In addition,

over the past twenty-six years, we have worked with countless charities and organizations and have assisted those in need whenever possible. In 2003 and 2007, we were instrumental in helping to house hundreds of horses on our property during the devastating San Diego County wildfires. Likewise, one week after the September 11th terrorist attack, our members donated over $400,000 to the American Red Cross Fund for Victims. We also pay a yearly tribute to our local servicemen and women by honoring them in front of our large Sunday Polo crowds. 2012 will be a pivotal year in the history of Polo in this county. Our lease with the City of San Diego is up for renewal and we are one of a handful of businesses and organizations responding to an open request for proposals (RFP) from the City. We would be honored to keep our current home and continue upon a century-long tradition of polo, fellowship, service and charity. We have always stood behind those in need and continually supported our local community and so we ask that you now stand behind us as we fight to renew our lease. Imagine a year from today, sitting where you are and none of this being here. Please help us to Save The San Diego Polo Club.

HOW TO WATCH THE OBJECT: Move the ball down field and through the goal in 4-6 periods of play, known as “chukkers.” Each chukker is 7 ½ minutes long. Most polo rules are for the safety of the player and their horses. Primary concerns are the “right of way” and “line of the ball,” which is an imaginary line formed each time the ball is struck, possibly the most important rule in the game. The player who last struck the ball has the right of way and no other player may cross the line of the ball in front of that player. Players may approach the ball and ride on either side of the “line.” Crossing the line is the most common foul in polo. A penalty shot is a free hit from a predetermined distance into a guarded or unguarded goal. A dramatic pause in action often provides some of the most suspenseful moments in the game. 30

THE PLAYERS: Four on a side, positions designated by jersey number. Number 1 is the most offensive forward player and usually has an accurate hit. Number 2 plays offense and defense, interchanging with Player 3. Number 3 is the quarterback and playmaker. This player is often the highest rated and most experienced player. Number 4 is the last line of defense and can hit a long ball accurately. Each player has a given handicap awarded by the Unites States Polo Association (USPA) between -2 and 10 goals (ten being the best). Players’ handicaps are added together to form a team that is equal to its competition. The difference in goals between two teams is awarded to the lower rated team before play begins.

GLOSSARY CHUKKER: Period of play consisting of 7-1/2 minutes. There are 4 or 6 chukkers in a game. FOULS: While often hard to see, one can usually tell a foul by listening to the players after the whistle blows. Most fouls occur when the play is dangerous to the horses and their players. Below is a list of common fouls: t Zig-zag or cut across in front of a galloping man. t Crossing close behind another pony to get into position to hook the opponent. t Reaching over or under a pony to hook. A player may hook fairly if he is on the side where the play is being made or directly behind or in front of the striking player. t Bumping a player at an angle and causing the horse to stagger. The players must be parallel to bump or ride-off fairly. t No picks can be used. They are extremely dangerous for the horses. HANDICAP: Players are rated by the USPA Handicap Committee from -2 to 10, ten being the best in the world. There are only eleven active 10-goal players in the USPA. HOOK: One of the two defensive maneuvers (the other is the ride-off) allowed in the rules. The mallet is used to block, or interfere with another player’s swing at the ball. NEAR SIDE: The left side of the polo pony. NECK SHOT: Hitting the ball under a horse’s neck. LINE OF THE BALL: Imaginary line produced by the ball when it is hit or deflected. RIDE OFF: Similar to a body check in hockey, a ride-off is used to break an opposing player’s concentration, move him off the line of the ball or spoil his shot. A ride-off is hard and dramatic, but if executed properly, does not endanger the horses. THIRD MAN: usually at mid-field; does not call the fouls but is the final word in the case of a dispute between the two mounted referees. RANCHO SANTA FE CUP This hotly contested tournament sets the pace for the rest of the season, and tests each rider’s readiness after months of hard training and dedicated practice. Team Tritech/Princeps claimed the Lincoln’s Rancho Santa Fe Cup in 2011 by finishing over Hanalei Bay/San Fernando in a razor-thin 10-to-9 win. Last year’s finals coincided with Father’s Day, and it was a beautiful Sunday to be outside.

PAN-AMERICAN CUP Last year’s event included two exciting matches, golf-cart polo, live music, and even a watermelon eating contest. During the intermission, players and spectators traded horses for golf carts in an attempt to play polo atop four wheels instead of four legs. For the feature match, Marianno Fassetta wowed the crowd in a tremendous 10-goal performance, cementing a win for Southwind/Hanalei Bay.

SURF CUP Last year saw great weather and packed stands for some serious polo competition at the Surf Cup. During the feature match, Tritech/La Pasion was able to overcome a 3-0 handicap against StarMeadow/Hanalei Bay to finish 12-11. After the final chukker, fans enjoyed live music and cold drinks under an afternoon sun.

USPA ROSSMORE CUP The Rossmore Cup is named after British Cavalry Major Sir Nigel Rossmore. Rossmore was an avid and highly regarded polo player who volunteered for the cavalry when World War I broke out. On July 14, 1916, Major Rossmore was killed in action in a cavalry charge. The Rossmore Cup is dedicated to the memory of Major Sir Nigel Rossmore so that he and his passion for polo should never be forgotten. After winning last year’s cup, team Hanalei Bay is looking for a repeat.

FERNANDO GUTIERREZ MEMORIAL CUP HISTORY The Fernando Gutierrez Memorial Cup is held every season to remember a great man and a great polo player. Fernando Gutierrez, one of our original Founding Members, was funloving, generous, and loved the game of polo and the San Diego Polo Club. We are honored to be able to remember Fernando Gutierrez through this annual tournament, as his family continues his legacy both on and off the field.

RECAP This tournament marks the end of the first half of an exciting San Diego Polo Club season, with San Diego Surf Cup Soccer taking over the polo fields from July 23rd to August 15th. Last year’s matches showcased some exciting and physical play. Team Hanalei Bay, led by Mariano Fassetta, battled it out with StarMeadow for the rights to the beautiful bronze trophies. Fassetta wowed the crowd with an amazing 9-goal performance, while the father and son team of Graham Bray and Jesse Bray attempted to keep up with 7 goals between the two of them. But in the end, it was team Hanalei Bay and their strong finish that secured their victory. 40

WILLIS ALLEN MEMORIAL CUP HISTORY The Willis Allen Memorial Cup is a fairly new tournament here at the San Diego Polo Club and is held in honor of our “Founding Father” Willis Allen. Together with his son-in-law Harry Collins and grandson Chris, Willis developed the property where the San Diego Polo Club resides. Willis was a gentle, humble man who loved the sport and his horses. A week before his death in the summer of 2004, Willis was still playing polo on his beloved polo ponies. Field #1 is dedicated in his memory.

RECAP Last year’s cup saw great action in the first match between Trinity and Southwind / Adeptus. In an exciting finish, and with the score tied up at 10-10 in the 6th chukker, San Diego Polo Club founding member, Colleen Wilson, broke away to score the winning goal for Southwind / Adeptus. The day’s feature match pitted team StarMeadow against Tritech / San Judas. In an example of just how intense the game of polo can get, Gaston VonWernich and his horse Fleur took a nasty spill during the match. Both rebounded without serious injury and Tritech / San Judas played on to win the Willis Allen Memorial Cup. 42

USPA SPRECKELS CUP HISTORY Named after John D. Spreckels, this tournament is steeped in polo history. Among other accomplishments, Spreckels is credited with bringing polo to Coronado’s beautiful green lawns. He built a polo facility on the island that quickly became respected throughout the United States. In 1909, Spreckels inaugurated the Polo Challenge and enlisted the aid of designers Brock and Feagus of Los Angeles to commission a dramatic silver trophy almost two feet high. Each year, with the exception of the years of World War I, the trophy was played for until it was retired in 1921. The cup was rediscovered in the 1980s and was refurbished by Jessops Jewelers to its present, beautiful condition. Today, this prestigious trophy provides a tangible link between the players of today and the polo legends of the early 20th century.

RECAP In last year’s finals, Hanalei Bay started fast with 3 goals in the first chukker, but by half time StarMeadow had regained balance with 5 goals to Hanalei Bay’s 6. In the 5th chukker, the father and son duo of Graham and Jesse Bray put 4 goals on the board to thrust StarMeadow into an 11-9 lead. In the end, StarMeadow triumphed with a final score of 13-10 and a much-deserved 2011 Spreckels Cup title.

I have too many shoes! I keep saying I’m going to learn Spanish, but never do. I love to cook & the kitchen is my favorite room in the house. Skiing is my first sport, and I used to teach. During the polo season, I ride 2-3 horses every morning and then again in the afternoon. I like pink, but won’t make the team wear it on the field. (You’re welcome!) I was born in Alabama & moved to Bellevue Washington when I was 7. I wanted to ride so badly that I found some horses in a pasture, made friends, and just got on! No saddle, no bridle, I didn’t even know if they were broke! 8. I played the saxophone for 9 years, the piano for 6, and guitar for 2. 9. I moved to Hawaii after college and lived there for 16 years. 10. I have the cutest dog in the world. 50

My favorite car is my Freightliner Truck with my 12 horse trailer hooked up behind. 7. I have never been athletic so I must practice continually to keep from getting worse. 8. If I play poorly during a game, I blame it on the horse. 9. Often times I wonder why I would participate in a sport when there is always an ambulance on the sidelines. 10. Maya was first thrown off a horse when she was 6 years old. She fractured her arm. Lokesh was first thrown off a horse when he was 38 years old. He fractured his ego. 4. Maya is a black belt in Karate. Lokesh has a black leather belt in his closet. 5. Maya and Lokesh have piloted a plane from the San Diego Polo Club to Palomar Airport. Lokesh has piloted a jet from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Palomar Airport. 6. Maya plays piano and guitar and her favorite artist is Lady Gaga. 7. Maya won her first arena polo tournament at age 9. 8. Maya is a vegetarian. Lokesh is a chocoholic. 9. Lokesh studied Sanskrit at Oxford University. Maya is the student body president at Diegueno Country School 10. My favorite was the Eagles in 2010. I love sitting by the tack room with Stu on my lap and listening to the horses munch hay. My favorite pre-game breakfast is blueberry buckwheat pancakes. I used to play hockey with my brothers, and gladly played goalie while they took slap shots at me. I used to have a pet goose named Gus. Now I have 8 horses and a dog. I love the smell of flowering honeysuckle trees. My most loyal and trustworthy boyfriend ever is Stu (my dog).

ROBERTO ESTUDILLO ESQUIVEL Was born in San Diego, California and was raised in Baja California Mexico. Both his paternal and maternal heritage comes from prominent ancestry. The Estudillo family was one of the first European settlers in southern California and have been in this land for over 200 years, since it was New Spain, then Mexico and today, United States. They lived in Casa de Estudillo, considered the finest house in Mexican California; it is located in Old Town San Diego and is now a Museum and National Historic Landmark. Roberto is the seventh generation Estudillo in California. His maternal lineage comes from Yucatan, were the family was well known in the region for owning land and cultivating henequen plant. His grandfather was a very distinguished, award winning Civil Engineer and also served as Governor of Baja California. Roberto’s first years of grade school were coursed in San Diego and later he went to Tijuana to continue his studies; he entered law school and earned his Juris Doctor degree. He studied Polynesian martial arts in the style Lima lama. He also enjoys and practices tennis, golf, wind surfing, and traveling. Roberto has visited over 100 countries in the world. Roberto’s professions are Attorney at Law, Entrepreneur, and Real Estate Developer. He is currently assembling Charity Donor, a non-profit organization, whose sole purpose is to facilitate people to donate to their individual cause. He was introduced to polo by his brother in law Fernando Gutierrez Barron. His polo career started in Rosarito, Baja California, where they played polo at Rancho San Fernando, and this is the reason why Roberto’s team name is San Fernando. He currently owns over 20 polo ponies and they are distributed amongst San Diego, Mexico City, and Rosarito. He has been a member of the San Diego Polo Club for 15 + years. He is one of the very few members that have remained playing continuously for the last 15 years. Roberto’s philosophy in life is that we are all here for a purpose, we each have our own mission to fulfill; we must find it, accomplish it, and when we leave this world, we would have made it a better place.

When naming my Polo ponies, I like using names of great Mexican Revolutionary heroes. I was born in Mexico City, Mexico. I come from a very large family. I am the 6th of 7 children and growing up, we all had nicknames. Mine was “Lottery” because I was the first boy after 5 girls. 4. I am bilingual and fluently speak both Spanish and English. 5. To prepare for a match, I have a ritual of asking my wife to give me her blessing. 6. To no one’s surprise, my favorite food is Mexican. 7. I love Champagne and you’ll often find me with a bottle at Sunday Polo. My favorite brand is Veuve Clicquot. 8. I have traveled all over the world. 9. I’m not a big fan of watching TV and rarely do. I was born in Otahuhu, New Zealand. In 6th grade I was given an option to play competitive soccer, but I chose polo. 2012 was the first time in 8 years that I didn’t attend the Stagecoach Music Festival. I’ve been playing polo since I was 2 years old. I became a professional at 14. My horses are named in different themes: handbags, beaches, cars, and beer. I am the youngest professional player in San Diego. I’ve broken my nose 6 times, but not any other bone. The connection between me and a horse is like no other sport. It’s why I love polo so much. I am the youngest player to win the Spreckels Cup. Whenever I play on Kimo’s team, he makes me eat a Snickers before that match. I hate chocolate, but he thinks it makes me play better.

I was shearing 500 sheep a day in New Zealand before I started playing polo. My cell phone ringtone is Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff.” I have trained all of my horses myself. I met my wife Debbie, 27 years ago in New Zealand. San Diego has been my home for 22 years, but I don’t have US citizenship. My favorite meal is meat, potatoes and peas. I have 3 brothers and 2 sisters. They’re in New Zealand and Australia and none of them play polo. It was a dream come true to win the Spreckels Cup with my son. My daughter is a professional model and my son is a professional polo player. Not bad, eh? I used to be a 7 handicap for 10 years. I am still an 8 in the arena.

I am a native of San Diego. I have always been somewhat ‘obsessed’ with horses. When I was a little girl, I planted a toy horse in our yard, watered it daily and waited for a horse to sprout. 3. At age 17, I lived in Bali by myself. No running water. Before there were hotels and resorts. I rode my motorcycle all over the island. It was the best experience of my life. 4. When I first began polo I didn’t know how to ride a horse. Sink or swim right? 5. One time, a pro on the opponents side backed our team’s ball out of the goal mouth but I was able hit it out of the air and right back in. It was the best shot of my career and I can still recall the looks on everyone’s faces. It was was priceless. 6. I played one season of baseball and although I broke my nose twice, my team won the Championship. 7. I can crack just about every joint in my body. I find this impressive but most find it annoying. 8. I have played polo in England, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Argentina, Kentucky, Arizona, New York, Florida, Indio, Santa Barbara, Los Angleles, Poway, Orange County and San Diego. 9. I played Elephant Polo in India this year and loved it! 10. I am a Gramma! 58

I have 3 brothers and 1 sister, and if you can believe it, I am the runt of the group. I started my polo career at the age of 12 in Calgary, Canada. At the peak of my career I had a 6 goal handicap and I kept that ranking for 10 years. 3. I met Graham Bray when I was 18 years old and to this day, I still consider him one of my polo mentors. 4. There is a polo tournament in Canada named after me called the “Kimo-Cup.” 5. I was an all-star football player in high school and played semi-pro football until the age of 35. 6. I participated in Hawaiian rodeos throughout my life competing in double-mugging, calf roping, and steer wrestling. 7. In 1998, a national motorcycle magazine featured a 3-page spread about me and my one-of-a-kind soft tail Harley. 8. I have 10 tattoos on my body and each one tells a unique story. 9. I have played polo with 2 Royal families. 10. I married the woman of my dreams 16 years ago and we have 3 beautiful girls; Hi’ilawe, Ilihia, and Uakea. They are lovingly nicknamed Lawe, Kuku, and Buddha. 60

ALISHA & DIRK WRAY How does a small town entrepreneurial kid from Michigan end up playing the Sport of Kings on the graced shores and worldrenown San Diego Polo Club? After advanced international degrees, corporate and Wall Street stints; advising many leaders including sovereign leaders, Dirk by accident insulted a member of the British aristocracy when he said, “You’re full of manure, they don’t play polo on elephants!” Which resulted in an honor challenge to play on the Brit’s team the following month in then war-torn Sri Lanka. From his mixed martial arts and various sports background, Dirk surprised all by becoming the high goaler of the tournament; and, when asked which polo club he played at as a professional, he had to confess to never riding a horse! Back home in SoCal, Dirk ventured to try his luck at the famed SDPC arena and on the third attempt met fate head on. Her name: Alisha. A local SD model beauty and competitive long time hunter jumper that “saw the light” and was “reborn” a polo player. The then singles’ first match in the arena led to a show of chivalry; that later lead to Dirk calling Alisha to ask her where she got her polo boots (nice line Dirk – Where there is a Wray; there is a Way!). Passionate love ever since and one of the rare couples in polo that can play the game together and win! After a great nine years at the club, Dirk and Alisha hope that you will support the Club’s efforts to keep the 100+ year tradition of the oldest sport in history in San Diego. The couple’s businesses and charities are economic development focused: supporting health care, education, agriculture, water and energy in many countries, including the great U.S.A! SADDLE UP NEW SEASON, NEW POLO SCHOOL BY LAUREN YBARRA Winston Churchill once said, “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” For many, horses in motion are a source of great inspiration. Their strength and speed can leave observers awestruck; however harnessing such power requires exceptional skill and an ability to bond with the animal. Therefore, an ideal polo player must develop both his body and his mind, and have a full understanding of the game and the horses that he rides.

The San Diego Polo School recognizes the need for the development of a well-rounded player, and has made some changes to the summer polo school. We will continue to offer the first polo lesson free of charge, after which time, beginners will graduate to Level 1. Continuing players who have mastered riding and hitting techniques will be placed in either Level 2 (intermediate) or Level 3 (advanced) classes. We will also be offering a wide array of classes this summer which will cover various polo and

equine-related topics, and everyone is welcome to attend. We want to ensure that our students not only learn the sport but also understand both the rules of the game and the nature of the animals; prerequisites such as rules clinics and riding lessons, will now be required before students can advance to higher levels. We will be holding umpire clinics throughout the summer as well, and we encourage players to come and learn about any of the changes that the United

States Polo Association (USPA) has made to their rule book. Informational sessions on buying/leasing horses, and how to form a polo team will also be available. These talks will prove invaluable to new players and riders who are just learning the sport. Brenda Phillips, a student since June 2010, remarked, “I’m excited for these classes and I think they are really going to give beginners an opportunity to learn every aspect of the game.” The Polo School is also trying to bridge the gap between arena and grass polo. This summer the advanced students will get a “taste of the grass” with the Cancha Pequena league, which literally means “Small Field.” Cancha Pequena will be played on the grass but the length of the

field will be shortened and the larger arena ball will still be used. These games will be held every other Friday. Polo student Holly McGlinn, who began her polo career in May of 2011, said that she is “thrilled with the changes and is excited that new players will have the opportunity to work on their horsemanship and polo technique out on the grass.” The San Diego Polo School has instructed students from all backgrounds and skilllevels. We are excited about the changes we will be unveiling this summer, and we promise that students can look forward to having a well-rounded education in polo. THE LAST AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOOD BY MORGAN WOOD Tailgating is as much a part of polo as the players and ponies themselves. With the game of polo at its core, Sunday matches have become not only a time of action and exhilaration on the field, but also of celebration and reconnection with friends and family off the field. Joe Cahn, the self-proclaimed Commissioner of Tailgating, said it best, “tailgating is the last American neighborhood.” Our friend Brian Malarkey has offered up his favorite tailgate items. Brian says, “first and foremost, keep the picnic simple. Your focus should be on the match.” When it comes to the food he says to keep it “light and bright.”

For beverages, Brian breaks it down to kid-friendly and adultappropriate choices. “We like to give the little ones some fun spritzers of Sprite or tonic mixed with watermelon juice. For the adults, start with some Prosecco or Cava – bubbles! Lavender Mimosas are a favorite of ours and I especially love the popular ManMosa at Burlap (bourbon, blackberry, honey, bubbles).”As an alternative to bubbles, Brian recommends “grabbing some of the best beer in the country from our local San Diego craft breweries.”
