Parade
Twin Cities Hospital Board of Governors
And much more!
There are lot of events that make you think it is Spring. One of those is the El Riad Shrine Circus, and what a Circus it was. The Circus was a awesome show and it brought so many smiles to “Ladies and Gentlemen and Children of all ages”. I had the pleasure of visiting and helping work at the Chamberlain and Mitchell Circuses for a short period as well attending all 9 of the Sioux Falls performances and to see it takes a tremendous amount of work from all of the dedicated nobles and their families and friends to make these circuses the success we are so grateful for. Just for the Sioux Falls circus it takes 200-250 volunteers for everyone of the nine performances, I know of no other Temple that enjoys that dedicated participation from their Nobility and family and friends. The Yankton Circus is June 22-23 and the Winner Circus is June 24. A huge thank you to all of those who volunteered to bring all the smiles to the circus goers.
The units get the Motorcycles, Sprint cars, Stage coach & horses, Clown scooters and Drift Trikes among many other items out and serviced to make ready for the parade season. One of the mile stones for me is having that first Parade of the season, it was Sunday, May 7 and for the first time I sat on the side of the street and enjoyed the parade with First Lady Deb, my granddaughter - Charlee, her
friend DeLani, Rhonda Denney and Paul Berndt, it was great, although I think I ate too many tootsie rolls. The Steel Drummers even dusted off the drums, they must have worked in a little time for practice, they sounded fantastic. BUT it is hard to beat parading with your unit and seeing all of the smiling faces as you pass. Thank you to all of the units who participated in the Brandon Parade.

Attest: John Whitelock, P.P., Recorder
Yours in the Faith, Leo Baumgart Potentate
Parading is a true indicator of spring yet we Nobles have a very important event we look forward to every spring, the 292nd Ceremonial of the 135th year of the El Riad Shrine Temple was celebrated on Saturday, May 6, what a huge success it was. Bill Thompson did a masterful job as 1st Ceremonial master. Due to all of the endless hours of work by the Membership Committee chaired by John Archer and Charles Brown, El Riad created 16 new Nobles as we added to our El Riad Shrine family. We hope to add another 5-7 in Cold Sand in the near future. This Ceremonial was dedicated to Noble Don Maxon, a very deserving individual created as a Noble of El Riad in 1999. Don is a long time member of the Circus committee heading up the Safety sub committee during the Circus performances and organizing of out of town ticket sales. Don is a long time active member of the infamous Oriental Band, presiding as President in 2008 & 2009, he also served as a Potentate’s Aid. Thank you Don for your contribution in making El Riad the outstanding Temple we are.

Thank you to my wonderful wife, Debbie for the job she did with the ladies luncheon, she emphatically claimed it was the hard work of all of the ladies that helped her, she could not have done it with out their help, I was told some guy named “Mitch” played a huge part of the success.
Big Thank you to Chief of Staff, Todd Schmidt, Asst Chief of Staff,Dave Murphy and Chris “Morrie” Morrison and his band of “Potes AIDS”. Thank you to all of the Divan and their ladies and Past Potentate Ladies, and all of the dedicated people who helped make this fantastic day a huge success, what a phenomenal job done by all!
The Board of Governors Town Hall was May 18 and we had a big turn out to this wonderful opportunity Past Potentate and Vice Chair of the Midwest Region Hospital BOG has brought to El Riad. We learned a lot about the
Shriners Childrens Health System.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the Pote’s all unit Parade in Dell Rapids on June 24 with Oasis to follow parade.
The Imperial Session will be held in Charlotte, NC and El Riad will be taking a small voting contingent.
Shriners Children’s Twin Cities Gala is June 2 and El Riad will have a large contingent of Nobles and Ladies attending as a sponsor of the Gala.
That’s all for now, so let’s all go out and have some summer fun.
BaumgartOur thanks to these Nobles for buying their circus coupons for the kids! It’s not too late to support our circus — our largest fraternal fundraiser. If you haven’t returned your coupons and donation please take a moment and do so now. Additional donors will be listed in the next issue of the Cactus Thank you for your support!

Special thanks to Robert Koletzky for his generosity in becoming “Honorary Ringmasters” for this year’s Shrine Circus.
Let’s start with Circus Days. What a tremendous opportunity to partner with Nyberg’s Ace and bring back Circus Days! I would like to thank Aaron Zahn and Reid Jensen for their invaluable help in planting the seed for the return of Circus Days. A special shout out goes to Marin Nyberg for making that seed grow! There was a short window of time to make all the arrangements but “we” were able to make it happen and happen it did! The effort involved to staff all FIVE Nyberg Ace locations did not take place without the help of several Shrine Units. A big Thank You goes out to; the Blast & Cast, the Clowns, the Culinary Unit, the Hillbillies, the Motor Corps, the Rickshaws, the Shutterbugs and Pixels, the Sprint Cars and the Steel Drums! Included in that Thank You are several members of the Circus Committee and other Nobles from El Riad too numerous to mention. You all did such a spectacular job that you get to come back and do it again next year, and the year after that, and the year after that! Noble Kevin Nyberg, was so impressed and enthusiastic that he wants to “…do it bigger and better next year.” Now, I don’t know
by Jeff Landborg, Circus Chairmanwhat that means but I am diffidently in favor of it!
On to the Circus! The 2023 Circus year kicked off with 4 shows in Chamberlain, SD on April 17 and 18. A big Thank You goes out to all the members of the Big Bend Shrine Club along with the Mitchell Shrine Club and all the other Nobles from the surrounding area. You all do an outstanding job of getting our Shrine Circus season off to a great start! Next up, starting April 20, were 9 shows over 4 days in Sioux Falls, SD. Since we didn’t have a Circus in 2020 and 2021 it was safe to say that we had some rust to knock off in 2022. There were NO signs of that rust in 2023. Great recovery, everybody! Our Novelties department (the Clowns) benefited from the purge that took place in 2022. For the most part, all of our old novelties were sold or disposed of and we started 2023 with fresh inventory.
During our first meeting of the year, the Circus Committee took a look at a couple of issues from the past few years. We had some great discussions and made some changes that we thought would work the best for everybody. This included earlier start times for the first two shows on Saturday. The earlier start times allowed us to get the crowds into and out the Arena in a timely manner,
clean up properly between shows, rally and then get ready for the next show. We also found a better and simpler way to mark our reserved seating areas. This went a long way improve the communication between our Ushers and our guests as to where the reserved seating and general admission seating began and ended. Speaking of Ushers, we made increasing the number of Ushers per show a priority this year. And that message was well received! I want to thank the Divan Liaison’s for all their help in spreading that message. I can’t remember the last time I saw so many ushers. It made a huge improvement on getting guests in into their seats and helping to start the shows on time. Let’s keep that momentum going!
The biggest curve ball that we had to deal with in Sioux Falls this year was the switching from the sale of fountain pop to bottles of pop. Unfortunately, we only had a one week notice to address the change. There are some definite positives associated with no more fountain pop like; no ice, no cups, no lids, no straws and the biggest positive was no spills and no sticky floors! I want to Thank all the Floor Mangers for dealing with this new logistical challenge. You guys didn’t lose your cool. You got to work and tackled this issue with the typical El Riad tradition of…just getting it done! To all the volunteers that worked the concession stands, thank you for also handling this new challenge as well. We now know what we are up against with the handling of pop bottles and will have a strategy in place for next year to keep all the stock cold and readily available.
Next up on the calendar was the Mitchell Shrine Circus. The Mitchell Shrine Club started their Circus season on April 24 with 5 shows over 3 days in the historic Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. If you haven’t seen it, this year’s theme on the outside of the Corn Palace is the Shrine Circus. Mitchell’s own, Troy Magnuson (aka Pop Corn) is featured on one of the murals! What an
awesome and well-deserved honor. I recently found out (even though they have been doing it for decades) that Mitchell actually has 6 shows not 5. The 6th show is by invite only. The reason for the extra show is to service the need for handicapped seating of which the Corn Palace has a limited number. The Mitchell Shine Club mails out a special invitation to all the local nursing homes within about a 50-mile radius. The show will host nearly 300 Guests. The performance is moved to the center ring only and uses the two outer rings for seating. This awesome idea is typical of what we do as Shriners. The Mitchell Shrine Club would like to thank The Mitchell Technical Collage Nursing Class for their invaluable help in making this special show a success.
Finally, some well deserved rest before the Shrine Circus returns in June. The Yankton Shine Club will host one evening show each on Thursday and Friday nights starting June 22 at the NFFA Easton Yankton Archery Complex in Yankton, SD. The Yankton Shrine Circus will be moving from a 2-show day/night schedule over one day, to one show night/night schedule over two days. This is something new for Yankton and everybody expects in to be a very successful change. Last but not least will be the final show in the 2023 Shrine Circus year in Winner, SD. The Rosebud Shrine Club will host one show on June 25 at the Winner, SD Tripp County Rodeo Grounds. Please check out Shrine Circus dates and times at elriad.org
In parting, I would like to thank Rob Angerhofer for stepping up to be the Assistant Circus Chairman for this year and next year. Rob will take over the position of Chairman in 2025.
To the all the Nobles of El Riad, their Ladies, Family and Friends…AWESOME JOB! THANK YOU!

The Big Band played for Dance Club on April 14 and as of this writing, warming up for Ceremonial on May 5. We completed our trailer remodel during the winter, so it is ready to parade.
By the time you have received this, our trumpet section plus invited “everyone else’s trumpet” will have played “Taps Across America” on the sidewalk in front of the building on Memorial Day at 3 p.m.!
The Band has ordered new jackets. Yes, the tan, older jackets are giving way to new burgundy blazers that will almost match our fez color. Thanks to Steve and Jerry at Dakota Lettering/Sports for working with us on ordering and pocket patch design!! We will have them for fall ceremonial, but hopefully for a Dance Club gig this summer!
In other news, “Last Call” rock band is practicing some new tunes to add to our selection for the summer “gigs”. Our practice sessions are on occasional Sunday nights at 5:30 at the Shrine. “Last Call” has a full summer schedule and now working on some possibilities for the fall and into 2024. These “gigs” are all free, so welcome to join us anywhere. (Guess you might want to know someone at the private parties !)
Before I post the dates, here is some interesting “fun facts” about the 9 band members:
• 3 are current or former Military members representing Army, Navy and Air force
• 4 members belong to Peace Lutheran, 3 of which play in the church band and one of them is the Musical Director for the church!
• 2 are music instructors
• 4 members play more than one instrument
• 3 members are Pres, VP and Sec of the Shrine Big Band
• 4 are previous Lincoln High School band members.
We’d love to have Shriners in the crowd anywhere we go, so here is the confirmed list for this summer, in case you can join us. With the exception of the private parties, any of you and friends and family are welcome to join us and it is FREE!
We still enjoy putting out the “Tip Jar” which proceeds go to the Children’s Transportation Fund. Our good friends at Lloyd Companies have joined us in the promotion and will match any donations we get, during the year, up to $5,000! So…hopefully, we have a BIG check to hand Pote Leo at the FALL Ceremonial!!

Reunion at the Shrine
At a recent Classie Auto meeting a member mentioned that he intended to drive the “Tail of the Dragon” while on an upcoming road trip.
The Tail of the Dragon is considered as one of the world’s best motorcycling and sports car roads. It also is listed as one of the most dangerous roads in the United States. This stretch of US 129 is located at the Tennessee/ North Carolina state line. For you race fans, it’s one hour thirty minutes South of Knoxville Raceway, the Sprint Car Capital of the World.
Tail of the Dragon…are you feeling brave?
Experienced drivers can take a scenic drive through the smokies to reach what the locals call the Tail of the Dragon, a curvaceous stretch of road that sports car enthusiasts and motorcyclists especially love testing their skills on. This road is a challenge for most drivers, as it features 318 twists and turns in the 11-mile journey. The speed limit is set at 30 miles per hour, mainly to keep you on the road.
Several days after that conversation our thoughts went to what famous roads do we have in South Dakota, that
by Matt Sowdenwould compare to the tail of the dragon. That was easy… Iron Mountain Road located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, also known as US-16A begins outside of Keystone, South Dakota. From Keystone, the scenic drive takes the travelers, past Mount Rushmore to the top of Iron Mountain before winding back down toward Custer State Park and SD-36.
Iron Mountain Road is a demanding 17 miles scenic drive with 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 tunnels and 3 pigtails (turns which loop over their own roads, allowing the road to climb rapidly.) This unusual and captivating road was specifically designed to limit the speed of the travelers to 35 miles per hour. Allowing the travelers to enjoy the beauty of the Black Hills.
Two great drives in this great country of ours. There are many, many, more great roads waiting for you to get your ride out and go on a road trip. The nice weather is here, you have the urge, the time is right, just do it.
The information used in this article was taken off the web.
Parades have started. Our first parade was in Brandon on May 7, the unit had our annual social gathering at Todd and Stacey Long’s place. Well attended by the unit as we had 11 cars on the street with Moe Richard blocking with his hot rod.
We have concluded our updates to the trailer to include some additional storage and better organization in the front. This will help tremendously at parades.
Spring ceremony was thrilling with 16 new Nobles and for myself as my son Corbin DeVries joined our great philanthropy and has joined our unit as well. If you happen to see him, welcome him to our great family of brothers.
June will continue with at least 3 parades in Luverne,
by Chad DeVriesMN, Hills,MN and our Potes parade in Dell Rapids. If you get a chance come out and see what we do on the streets.
Competition team will start practicing this month and continue up until MSA in Alexandria MN.
That’s all for this month.
4 wheels on the street to get kids on their feet.
Illustrious Sir Arlen Knutson took a few moments at the ceremonial on May 15 to tell the nobility the reasons why he chose to dedicate El Riad’s 240th Ceremonial to Noble Lowell W. Larson. “To begin,” the Pote said, Noble Lowell has worked every circus performance since joining the Shrine n 1983 including all the set-up and tear-down sessions.” Noble Lowell served as Potentate’s Aide in ’91, ’92, ’93, ’94 and ’96, has worked many hospital clinics both burns and orthopedics, has joined other nobles at several El Riad kids’ Christmas parties, has been involved with the Christmas tree decorations at Home Federal Bank, and spent untold hours of volunteer work at the Mosque. Noble Lowell holds memberships in the Provosts, Campers, Legion of Honor, and the Dance Club.
The El Riad patient of the month for June 1973 is Kevin, 9 years old from Tracy, Minnesota. Kevin was accepted as a patient in July, 1966. When Kevin was 3 years old, he fell from a tractor and went under the wheel. This caused fractures and injury to the spine which resulted in paralysis of the lower spine and legs. His first admission to Shriners Hospital in January, 1967 was for evaluation of his condition and physical therapy. In April, 1969 he was again admitted to the hospital for surgery to his left hip and both feet to enable him to wear braces so that he could learn to walk. In October, 1969 Kevin was fitted with long leg braces attached to a back brace, which enabled him to walk with crutches. He can now attend school on a regular schedule and participate in many more activities. Kevin has been admitted to the hospital three times since his first fitting with braces. As he grows or the braces wear out, he
As reported in the El Riad Cactus and compiled by John Whitelock, PP
will be readmitted for new fittings until he is sixteen years old. He is a very bright, cheerful, active boy who enjoyed his school and Boy Scout groups at the hospital.
The 132nd Ceremonial was, in several respects, the greatest put on by El Riad in many years. The class of candidates included 99 “Masons of high degree,” many of whom are outstanding in their respective fields of endeavor, men who would do credit to any organization. Director Caille is to be commended for his “direction” both as to the esoteric and the histrionic phases of the stage presentation. The ritualistic work was done in an exceptionally impressive manner and the Second Section was superb. The “stunts” worked, and the new white uniforms of the Nomads gave an air of freshness that combined to produce a most pleasing series of funny happenings that entertained both novices and nobles alike. The parade was a thrill to the townspeople who were gathered along the line of march, and a source of pride to the Nobility. The new uniforms and new flags impressed everyone with the glitter, glamour and grandeur of the Shrine – the “blue ribbon” organization among fraternal orders. 1,118 guests were served at the traditional ceremonial banquet, which was a sumptuous repast that made a deep and lasting impression for both its quality and quantity. Past Potentate Willy gave a comprehensive lecture on the history of the Shrine, the work of our hospitals and the organizational set-up of our Temple. The candidates were made conscious of the sort of fraternity they were joining, and many nobles “listening in” to the lecture learned much they had not known before.
Well we have successfully made it through the 2023 Shrine Circus. We took tickets at the door, supplied an usher for each show and sang the National Anthem at the beginning of each show. The circus was a hit with kids and adults alike, as the two seniors I talked to at the end of a show said “This was awesome, we haven’t been to a circus in 45 years and I want to come back next year.” My daughter volunteered at a couple shows and walked out with at least 4 bags of cotton candy. Has to feed the tapeworm in her legs who has a sweet tooth.
We continue to rehears weekly with new music and some that we sing at various outings. Please come and lend your voice when you can. We meet every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Shrine Temple. You are more than welcome to come sing to see if you would enjoy it. Later in June we will
by Evan Brinkbegin our the month run of singing the National Anthem at a night at the Canaries baseball games. We also will be singing the anthem at the ABA convention. American Bankers Association.
A big Thank You to Potentate Leo Baumgart and the Divan for the Oasis Nights and the Meals. Much appreciated. I hope as many Chanters as possible make it to the Ceremonial that will be in May. Also the evening with the Imperial Potentate and Divan, Hospital Board of Governors and the Nobles from a potential 18 Temples. Hope you made it. This is a big deal!!
I’ll sign off now but remember you can’t sing with a smile on your face. I beg you to come and try it….
Kickstands up for the month of June. Our Road Captain Lonnie Albers has the Motor Corps in full swing. We have had a few parades already to knock the rust off us and are ready to put all the guys we can on the streets of Dell Rapids the 24 of June for the Potes Parade.
We want to thank all the guys and ladies in the Motor Corps Unit for their help making our month of May bars and food a huge success. It started with the Fish Fry where we served around 120 people and then enjoyed the fellowship that followed. Steve Hauff, Bruce Boegler, Dave Sieler and George Roberts from the Culinary Unit got us set up and guided PP Jim Slater and Steve Haase through the frying process. John Egan did the running of food to John Bayer, Chuck Ihlen and Lloyd Schipper for serving and Lonnie Albers, Chris (Chilly) Hahn, Tom Anderson and Jerry Hauff kept them hydrated…. May
by Bill Thompson10 we ran the bar and passed the baton to the more than capable Watertown unit who put on one heck of a Mexican bar to feed us all before the Stated Meeting. Thanks Jeff Gamber and his team of food fanatics… well done guys. May 17 we had all hands on deck from the Motor Corps for our regular meeting and the Chicken Alfredo. The ride through the Loess Hills on the 20 of May was a special treat. The Widow Sons guys joined us and that’s for putting that together Todd Stoll. Thanks to all of you for coming out to attend all the activities in May. I also want to thank all the guys for the huge turn out at the Spring Ceremonial. Going on stage to present a check to the shrine with you guys was an honor. Short and sweet for this one because the sun is out and we have practice. Keep an eye out for the 2 wheeled road warriors and stay safe.
Saturday, April 22 we lost a great man, beloved brother, devoted father, honored Army Colonel and friend to all who knew him. “TACO” Tom Anderson and his lovely wife Margaret, took my wife and I, along with many of our Motor Corps members, into their home in Rapid City on a regular basis. They were quick with an open arm to welcome you in from a day of riding and long on the conversation at the breakfast table before we took off for another day of adventure. The breakfast table conversation was my favorite at the Colonels house. The stories would range from his daughter, Peggy and her hiking adventures to some back and forth about something happening in our country. The Colonel was a blessing to everyone he came in contact with and the world will not be as well off going forward after the passing of this man.
Safe travels Colonel Tom TACO Anderson, until we meet again.
Obituary for Thomas A. Anderson can be viewed at www.georgeboom.com/obituary/ thomas-anderson.
Many thanks go out to all of our volunteers that helped makes this years Circus a success!

Sorry, but I missed last months deadline by a day and my article didn’t get included in the May issue (actually I was just too lazy and unmotivated and couldn’t think of anything interesting to say).
But we are back! The STB has gotten back into practice mode which was evidenced by our stellar performance at the Scottish Rite Spring Clinic Party on April 13. We played to a packed house and chose to forgo our usual six figure fee, instead opting for a free dinner of hot dogs, pizza, nachos and rice crispy bars for dessert. I think we made the right choice. Everyone seemed to have a good time, especially the kids who had a seemingly neverending limbo contest to the accompaniment of the SDB and the Limbo Rock. A conga line was also had during our performance of Tequila. We then packed up the drums in the trailer and drove across the street and unpacked the trailer, followed by an abbreviated Thursday night meeting and fellowship.
by Steve BurtisThe following week found us at the circus where all of us could be found either diligently scooping sno cones and selling the equally nutritious cotton candy in a bag, or ushering circus goers to their seats, counting money in the money room or selling tickets. The SDB members have their collective fingers in the circus pie every year and are happy to do it.
In May we will be performing at our first parade of the year at the Brandon Loyalty Day Parade, which we have loyally attended for a number of years. Following the parade we will be retiring to Brandon Plumbing & Heating & BBQ for our annual post-parade feast of ribs and all the fixins provided by Keith “Dwain” Backer and Rob “Chip” Angerhofer! Next up in May will be our annual spring golf outing and steak feed (seems like most of our events include food, hmm) in Garretson on the 18th of May. We will also be hosting the Wednesday night social on the 24 and 31. That wraps it up for this edition of the SDB update. Be well and see you next month (unless I am lazy and unmotivated again).
Man, what a winter/spring 2023 season!!
Nothing but congratulations are in order to our officers: Brigadier Scott Nepp, LeftTenant Dan Nichols and Sargent-Major Tim Voegele for leading us. And of course, congratulations to all the Fife members for an extraordinary first four months. Our efforts resulted in a Spring Ceremonial donation totaling $18,250! $10,000 to El Riad and $8,250 to Shriner’s Healthcare from our backer program. That total along with $100 million dollar membership in memory of brother Mark Wolfe is nothing but incredible.
We kicked off April with our family bowling party and oh what fun it is. Kids everywhere and just terrific family fun and fellowship. This is a thank you party our officers hosted to thank Fife members and families for all their efforts. My grandson Ethan Bruyer is picture with a bowling ball almost as big as he is!
Then it was onto the Circus and the Fife’s adding Usher services to our pop selling responsibilities. We certainly experienced an 11th hour setback when the Arena announced before the Circus that only bottled pop would be allowed. Naturally, we didn’t have carriers for this, but that didn’t stop “Admiral” Darrell Griggs (pictured) from
by Bruce Nortonimprovising his own way of carrying pop! And doesn’t Wade Carmen (pictured) look outstanding in his field? Thanks to all the Fifes that volunteered and to Dan Nichols for his excellence in scheduling.
Then it was on to the Spring Ceremonial. Our traditional moment in opening the Ceremonial was highlighted once again by what sounded like a bomb when Harland Danielson fired the gun during our signature “88” song. Great load Harland! Was great to note that past Potentate Dave Neiman helped march us in just days after delivering a baby hernia. We had 15 members participate and without a doubt, made an impression on the 15 candidates.
We have a fun summer season ahead of us with our appearance in the Memorial Day event and then on to Buffalo Days parade in Luverne the first weekend in June coming up. Hope to see everyone there that can possibly make these events.
Gosh, what a strong spring season for membership, culminating in 16 new Nobles (pictured) at Spring Ceremonial. Congratulations to Bill Thompson and membership committee members for all their efforts in generating spring class of new members. This spring season also included a Masonic Festival that was highly successful, We can certainly say it has been a great first four months of 2023.
Our Ceremonials are such a wonderful time to celebrate our fellowship and the great fraternity we all enjoy. As past Potentate Keith Rose constantly stated,”But for the Shrine? and John Whitlock emphasized during his time as Potentate is where would any of us be without our fraternity? El Riad is one of the strongest Temples in the entire Shrine universe and this entirely due to the wonderful brotherhood we share. Take a few minutes

to consider what our fraternity and the philanthropy we support means to you. Then, consider a friend or family member you would like to share that with and discuss your experiences with them.
Be reminded of our Rush Parties held the third Wednesday of each month at the Shrine Center. Let one of the membership committee guys know of a candidate you have and they’ll help make sure their journey into Masonic and Shrine brotherhood is meaningful. Thanks in advance for including getting a new member on your list of things to do. It is simply the best way to pay it forward and give back to El Riad all that it has meant to you!

The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.
Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.
Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.
Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

Noble Bayer said that any Shriners or members of the public can participate by joining in at the front of El Riad at 3:00 p.m. on May 29.
