From The Publishers Desk

The Beauty issue is always one of my favorite issues to work on. It always reminds me that beauty comes in many different shapes, sizes and colors. But you wouldn’t know that by many designers or on many runways in America today. At E’LON we believe that beauty at its core begins inside. Yet, many women live lives of quiet desperation fighting every day the only enemy that ever really matters. This enemy lives within their mind and looks back at them in the mirror each morning. You know this enemies voice because it’s the one that tells you that you are not good enough, strong enough, or that you’ve made far too many mistakes. I know that enemy; I have meant her on this road far too many times. Yet, I realize that the potential that truly makes me beautiful inside and out is far greater than the voices in the crowd that will shout otherwise. This month we went to the experts to help you uncover that beauty that lies both within and without. First, writer, Allison Penny meets with health experts and the medical community to help us understand that external beauty without good health is like putting lipstick on a corpse. In, ‘The Power of Real Beauty’ p. 42 get the information you need to take better care of your health by knowing the most important health information you need to know now (like knowing that you still need immunizations even beyond childhood). In ‘Hair Affair’ on p. 70 we are teaching you how to love that crowning glory. In celebration of real beauty we’re covering the Women in the World Summit that happens this month which brings some of the most inspiring women on the planet together to talk about the state of women around the globe. And we found another inspiring woman that we just had to tell you about. Designer Diane Linston, p. 37 creator of NGU (Never Give Up) fashions who is following her dreams and own advice as she brings beautiful designs into the marketplace all the way from Maple Heights, OH.

Meeting with models for our cover photo shoot, Red Hot Spring: A Power Color Makes a Sexy Comeback. New model Christabel listens as we discuss what beauty is all about. Photo Credit Greg Lopez

It’s a world away from New York, but she’s proving the point about not giving up. Rounding out this issue is all the fashion, beauty and color trends to help you look and feel your absolute best. But we would be remiss if we didn’t give you the most important beauty tip of all. Read ‘Six Ways to Unleash Your Potential’ on P.96, and reclaim your beautiful life. Here’s to a more beautiful, powerful, stronger, more motivated you.

Inspire A Life

NGU Never Give Up

A Designer Inspires Our Hearts and Sense of Style The press release announced, “Women who "Never Give Up" are always in style!” I was intrigued because here at E’LON that is our driving principle. So I looked up the company and read all of their materials they forwarded to us. What I found was a fashion company on the cutting edge of style, and the cutting edge of inspiration. NGU or Never Give Up is the brainchild of designer Diane Linston. Linston presented her collection during New York Fashion Week in February and explained what the brand represents to women today, "I'm excited about presenting the N.G.U. collection during New York Fashion Week. I want to inspire women to believe in their dreams. So when a woman wears N.G.U. Designs... perseverance is something that she will always think about. N.G.U. which mean 'Never Give Up', believe in your dream, and go for your dream!" This ready-to-wear collection is manufactured using high quality denim fabric; with innovative designs that contour the female form. The styles are unique, savvy and stylish for women who live an active lifestyle. N.G.U designs are available is sizes 6 through 28, and retails between, $120.00 to $200.00. "You will notice that N.G.U. Designs will always have a type of embellishment such as rhinestones, buckles and studs. N.G.U. is not plain or simple; it is high pace fashion for active women who want to be jazzy and sophisticated. And my logo is a clever female fox that winks one eye. That's a personal character trait from me. The fox represents perseverance because foxes have persistence in their character. They're clever and they never give up. And that is being foxy!" say Linston

Linston's design studio is called Styles of Imagination and is located in Maple Heights, Ohio. Her denim collection can be found in fifteen stores throughout the US and she plans to expand into more boutiques. Linston uses the N.G.U. brand to embellish her motivation for women. Diane Linston has been honored by the Phenomenal Foundation for her many positive contributions within the community. Linston also received recognition from Cleveland based Proyecto Luz organization, for volunteering time and fashions during a benefit fundraiser for Aids awareness. She volunteers her time at various schools during Dress for Success, and career council events in Cleveland, Ohio. She speaks to women in transition about how to dress, and mentors at organizations like Junior Achievement, the NAACP mentoring program. Linston also sits on the fashion design advisory board for Women of Making Moves organization, at Virginia Marti College. Linston is well respected in her community as she takes a grass-roots approach towards marketing the N.G.U. brand ...with the tenacity of a fox. Diane Linston is proof that to "Never Give Up" is what's always in style. We all have character building moments in our lives. Disappointing episodes that shape who and what we are, until we find what motivates us to press on. In the spirit of perseverance Ohio based Fashion Designer, Diane Linston created a premium women's active brand titled N.G.U.; that represents an inner spirit women have to never give up. – YW (Continued on p. 38-39) Yolanda Webb, Editor-in-Chief of E’LON Magazine is the author of five books on empowerment and strength for women. BETTER LIVING Did you know that your skin acts as an environmental barrier to help ward off and fight off most infections? This outer layer of skin is known as the epidermis and also contains a pigment called melanin that gives skin its color. Melanin helps protect skin from the sun’s harmful rays. The function of the skin is to protect us from harmful things. It is a barrier between the environment and the internal organ of our body. It protects us from chemicals, harmful sun rays, and bacteria. But if the skin is in poor condition and bad health through excessive abuse to include alcohol, drug, tobacco use this barrier is depleted and can’t function appropriate to help protect us. Here are a few tips that can lead to healthy skin and a healthier you.

Healthy Skin…Your First Defense To Good Health

First Know Your Skin Type Having great skin all over isn’t just about your face. It’s about your entire body, and its about knowing what type of skin you are working with. We are all different and the enormous amount of products on the product are typically specific to each of those skin types. You have Dry skin if it is flaky, scaly, or rough. You have Oily skin if it is shiny, greasy, and you have big pores. You have Combination skin if it is dry in some spots (cheeks, knees) and oily in others (forehead, forearms, nose, and chin). Cleaning and Care For Skin Normal/Combo Skin 

Don't just grab whatever soap is in the shower or at the sink to wash your face or body with. And don’t use the same soap on your face that you use on your body. You don't have to buy fancy, expensive products. You just need to find products that work for you. Use a gentle cleanser or soap and wash -don't scrub your face. Rinse with plenty of warm water, then pat dry. If you find your skin dries out or gets oily, try a different cleanser.

What’s Hot Now As spring approaches we all know that we will be scheduling the much needed mani/pedi appointment after a winter of gloves, boots and closed toe shoes. I for one am ready for the arrival of spring’s beautiful new colors. But, what’s hot right now for spring? We suggest you look for nudes (our favorite of the moment are from Butter London) and neon’s (from Chanel) for both fingers and toes. And Dior has introduced a super sheer pink Nail Glow all-in-one nail care, varnish and glow which gives nails a pretty petal hue while at the same time making the tips of your nails even whiter – creating a subtle French manicure effect. Note to self that cobalt blue (as in the new color Blue Satin from Chanel looks great on fingers and toes) has also made a comeback. Over at Essie we’re into the new magnetic shades that give your fingers and toes a wonderful reptilian look. This spring go for trends that make a statement for your entire look and say classy, not trashy. So ditch the glitter and the nail art for spring and opt instead for the new leather look polishes, and liquid sand textures which are making a big splash for spring. And classic red (as in Lena Horne and Marilyn Monroe) are making a big comeback this spring. So take your bombshell look up a notch by making the most of your mani/pedi this season.

MAKE ME UP 6 EASY STEPS TO APPLY BLUSH Applying blush at first can be tricky, but it’s all about being patient and using the right tools. But there are some simple techniques we use as makeup artist that help make it right the first time. First know your face shape and the best application method for your face shape. Secondly, make sure you are using a brush that is specifically designed for blush application. These are typically angled brushes that are often dense enough to pick up and hold your blush color. 1 After applying your moisturizer and foundation let your face dry…meaning give the moisturizer or foundation time to seep into and settle into your skin. The trick for blush is to sit onto of the foundation or moisturizer and not lose its color. 2 Using your angled blush brush gently tap it into your blush compact. For me this is usually three or four taps into the color before I apply. Shake off the excess (I do this by tapping the brush against my sink). 3 Smile really big and the trick here is to aim for the area in the picture on the left (depending our your face shape) 4 Gently tap the blush brush onto the apples of your cheek, starting from the roundest portion and tapping lightly upwards and towards your temple. 5 Now drag the color down starting from the temple to the apple to diffuse and blend the color together. 6 For more intense blush color add more color. If the color is too intense soften it with a bit of translucent powder which helps to set your makeup in place. – Becca Moore

Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton F/W 13 We love Marc Jacobs. We love Louis Vuitton. Enough said. In Paris like in NYC for his own show, Marc Jacobs took us to a place where we had to use our imagination a bit more to fill in the blanks. In NYC he paired suit jackets with tight fitting lingerie, slip skirts and skimpy underwear. And in Paris amid the backdrop of beauty, he had us again imagining that we were viewing you through your bedroom window as you danced around in your silk pajamas and unmentionables to try on the latest coat or jacket you were just surprised with. Pairing his presentation with big saddlebag fur draped handbags (sans the iconic LV label), Jacobs mesmerized the luxury dressing experience. All in all the coats, slip skirts, silk body hugging dresses and college co-ed breast hugging sweaters are worth the look…and we will leave our unmentionables in the bedroom.

Spring Revival Red relates to self awareness. It’s a color all about vitality and life. Red get’s noticed. In our lives the color red is a mark of the life force – blood red and marks that area of survival and stability and our place on this earth. COUTURE! Story Caroline Taylor Photography Gidget Hunter-Allen

Making a Grand Entrance on the World Stage

MARLENE HAUTE COUTURE

Marlene Haute Couture has been successfully branding her Name and Label through participation in fashion events since October 2011. And in little under two years she’s presented collections in two of the world’s largest fashion weeks. Recently she presented in China’s Fashion Week, which is one of the world’s fastest growing fashion weeks. And last month she was given the opportunity to present during MBFW Couture Week in New York City. Not a household name yet. Hold on to your couture because we think that’s only a matter of time. While in NYC for Fashion Week we were invited to attend a number of Couture Fashion events including Marlene Haute Couture. What I saw on the runway was a delightful and often romantic and whimsical pleasure. The presentation was strong, glamorous, and feminine. HAIR AFFAIR MODEL TONDIA BOUIE hadn’t been born when the afro was both a political and fashion statement. Today the hairstyle has come full circle with two separate generations sporting it for very different reasons.

During the late sixties, fashions changed with the times, reflecting the independence and identity of a young generation determined to break free from their parents' values and mores. One reflection of this trend was the Afro, a natural hairstyle worn by African Americans that reflected the growing political and cultural progressiveness and self-esteem among black people during the 1960s. The Afro, also known as the natural, became more than a hairstyle or fashion trend but a political statement that allowed black people to express their cultural and historical identity. Emerging out of the Black Power movement, which rejected Dr. Martin Luther King's emphasis on non-violence, the Afro offered black people greater expression that moved away from the timidity of their forebears. The hairstyle became famous for self-awareness and political fortitude and no one was a greater symbol for women of this ability to be independent than Angela Davis. With the emergence of celebrities like Tamara Dobson and James Brown, whose ‘Say it Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud’ both the Afro and the song became a message of liberation among young black students. The Afro was slowly finding its way away from political revolution and into mainstream American life. Yet, many in the black community rejected this idea of ‘natural’ black hair particularly older blacks who were still driven by older values. Today, the Afro has come of age. With many hair care companies producing natural hair care products, the hairstyle has found its way into corporate America and is now more of a fashion statement rather than a political statement. But, I think that depends upon who you ask. My mom has gone natural, a style she wore when she was a young girl because she said it’s more than just it being acceptable again. It’s more about the fact that it is who she is and will always be. A proud black woman. As for me…well I’m a proud black woman as well. But, I wear my afro because I love how it looks and I don’t want chemicals in my hair. So, today the choice is still about celebrating identity and one that I welcome the chance to celebrate with my mom. -

Showcasing her first Paris collection last October, fashion designer Araisara is taking on a daring move. Founding her Tokyo-based label in 2008, the designer, who is also a member of the China Designer Association and Council Fashion Designer in Tokyo has set her sights on a Western audience. Kicking her collection off with sporty silhouettes with kimono-inspired blouses and a bandeau tops, she also include slender silk dresses, worn with loose chiffon pants. “I wanted to create a connection between oriental culture and western fashion, to mingle both aesthetics. These motifs might look like prints, but in fact they are all made through traditional dying techniques,” stated Arai backstage after her show. These traditional Japanese hand-dyed motifs could be seeon on tops or adorned collars, lapels and trims, while kimonoinspired bathrobe dresses made out of transparent organza were belted with a loose knot on the waist and Chinese dresses came with graphical patterns and fading check prints.

Flying today has become impossible. To fly now means long lines and the enormous violations of privacy that includes more often than not our personhood as we are subjected to pat downs and x-ray madness. Most people have given up on even dressing for a flight. Opting more often to go for the convenience of having to take off belts, shoes and anything else that might look suspicious. But, what I am finding is that more and more younger passengers are opting to fly with class regardless of whether they are in first class or coach. We found the new Jet Set and took a look at what they are wearing.

What We’re Reading Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can’t Stop Talking By Susan Cain

BEST BEAUTY READS

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts–from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Shop online at http://amazon.com Atonished By Beverly Donofrio A bestselling memoirist bravely tells the story of the night evil paid her a visit—and how prayer chased evil away. Beverly Donofrio was living in a vibrant, picturesque Mexican town, where she practiced yoga, drank margaritas in her backyard, and took salsa lessons, she felt lost and was searching for monasteries to visit. The religious practice that had nourished her for several years had faded. She missed God. Then one night she woke to find a rapist holding a knife to her throat. So begins the memoir that charts Donofrio’s journey—a long and twisting road through denial, mourning, anger, vulnerability, and retreat at five very different monasteries. Since forever, I have learned to say yes to everything. Today I have decided to say no.” Forced by her father to marry a man three times her age, young Nujood Ali was sent away from her parents and beloved sisters and made to live with her husband and his family in an isolated village in rural Yemen. There she suffered daily from physical and emotional abuse by her mother-in-law and nightly at the rough hands of her spouse. Flouting his oath to wait to have sexual relations with Nujood until she was no longer a child, he took her virginity on their wedding night. She was only ten years old. Journey Towards The Light Along the way we need the life lessons that can inspire us to live our very best lives right now. Often we don’t know how. Yet, there are lessons that have been lived by others that can serve as guidepost along our own path.

PURE Potential

Sometimes the only choice is to bloom where you are planted. Many times that’s on the edge of a cliff. Yet, even there we can still thrive. When life hands us a somewhat difficult environment we can choose to allow the environment to define us or we can become the beauty within the environment. WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAHED BY YOLANDA WEBB

1. The difference between success and failure is perseverance and not giving up after one or two or even three failures. Just keep connecting to that place where failure doesn't matter. Sometimes we become so dependent on things always being a success, that we don’t know how to handle life when they are now. I like to think of it as a sail boat. When the wind dies down the boat stalls. That doesn’t mean its not still a beautiful boat or even a sail boat. If it’s stalled to long it might have to become a row boat, or wait for the wind or even call for support to help it move along again. 2.

The fact that creative ideas come in moments of relaxation, not in moments of stress is one way to reach your purest potential and success. That's why if you talk to the people who've achieved great breakthroughs; they will tell you that the silence of relaxation is where they learned the road, the best path to take.

3. Want to really live up to your potential. Invite the toxic, negative people in your life to the door. Is it a family member? While that may not be as easy you can have a much needed conversation with that family member to let them know that you have chosen a different path that included a positive lifestyle, positive people and influences. They are invited along the path with you, but if they don’t choose to share the new found values you’ve learned it’s ok. You now know they can’t stop you path. When you tolerate things in your life that’s what will always show up in your life. Tell yourself you deserve better than negative, toxic relationships. My suggestion…Walk away if at all possible.

4. You are going to have critics. Deal with it by ignoring them. People are going to talk about what you should or shouldn’t do, or what you’ve done wrong. Your harshest critic is always the one who is ready to cast the first stone, but if you stand your ground against them, like Christ they will realize their own sins are just as great. So know that they can’t and won’t break you unless you let them. But the hardest critic to ignore is you. When you learn that this critic that lives and has taken up residence in your head can also be dealt with you will be on the road to your pure potential.

always more than enough. 6. I feel very blessed to be doing exactly what I love to do. I feel very grateful. It doesn't mean that there aren't many things every day that happen that I wish didn't happen, challenges I'm dealing with, as we all are, but nevertheless the overwhelming sensation is one of gratitude. The truest way to live a life of pure potential is to do what you enjoy doing in life rather than simply settling. - YW

Dry Skin If you have dry skin, use a gentle cleanser that doesn't have alcohol or fragrance. These cleansers are available for both face and body. Gently wash your skin, then rinse with plenty of warm water. Don't use hot water because it removes the natural oils from your body faster. Try exfoliating once a week to get rid of flaky skin cells. It will make your skin look clearer and more even. Oily Skin If your skin is oily, use an oil-free foaming cleanser to wash your skin. Rinse with plenty of warm water. You may want to use a toner or astringent on your face after you've washed your face. Also be careful of body wash products and read ingredients carefully. Sensitive Skin If your skin is sensitive, wash it with a very gentle cleanser and rinse with warm water. Be sure to pat -- don't rub -- dry. Exfoliating may irritate sensitive skin. Try not to use products that have alcohol, soap, acid, or fragrance. Instead, look on the label for calming ingredients like aloe, chamomile, green tea polyphenols, and oats. The fewer ingredients in the product, the happier your skin may be. Adding moisture based products (creams and lotions) You may think you're too young to need moisturizer or lotion -- or your skin is too oily -- but all skin needs moisture. Moisturizers help keep your skin from drying out. Use it every day, no matter what skin type you have. Apply it while your skin is still damp from washing or rinsing to help seal in moisture. If you have acne or your skin is oily, find a moisturizer that is lightweight and oil-free, so it doesn't block your pores Should you wear Sunscreen? Your moisturizer may already have sunscreen in it. But it's a good idea to use a separate sunscreen, too. The sun can damage your skin in only 15 minutes. Even though you're young, you can get skin cancer. Look for sunscreen that works against both UVA and UVB rays with an SPF of at least 30. Wear it every day, even if it's not sunny and even if it's cold. The sun's rays can reflect off water, sand, and snow. Reapply every two hours These tips work for everybody, male or female, young or old. The best advice I ever had was about protecting my skin. Be diligent not only about washing properly and using the right products but treat your skin as your best friend. When you're tired, it can be tempting to go to bed without washing your face. But leaving makeup on your skin can clog your pores and cause acne. And I’ve been asked if showers or baths are better. I believe that’s a matter of preference, but there is something to be said for sitting in a warm bath and allowing your skin to drink in much needed water. Think of it this way, when it rains plants get a shower and after the rain the plants roots get to soak in a nice warm bath. - AP

Qualitative research was conducted in the form of focus groups in the following metropolitan areas: Atlanta, Chicago, New York and Washington DC. And in addition women from other cities participated in an online survey. OUR LAST WORD…. OUR BEST WORD can begin in each moment every day. We get to choose to be happy or sad, see the world as full or empty. I’ve discovered that even if we are not exactly where we’d like to be, that doesn’t mean that life right now can’t be beautiful or enjoyable. And the best part is we don’t have to do anything to make it beautiful. It already is beautiful. All you have to do is open your eyes. We are constantly surrounded by miracles, but we do not recognize them because they come to us so gracefully and seamlessly. For example, have you ever thought about how many different processes have to be organized simply to create the experience you’re having right now? Imagine if all of that was a conscious effort. Imagine if you had to think about breathing, or think about listening to music. You don’t, it just happens. Isn’t that amazing? Yet most people don’t even know where to begin to enjoy the real beauty of life that happens in each moment. I’ve found that there are a few easy shifts that need to take place, in order to create a state of constant awareness of how amazing life is. Most of the time we only catch a glimpse of how amazing things really are before we get sucked back into the monotony of our routines. Starting today why not try to find the beauty of life in the small things in life, like listening. If you learn to listen you will truly find out more about the other person. How about practicing non-judgment? If you do so you will find your world opening up with clarity and begin to enjoy this beauty that we were created With each issue of this wonderful magazine I get to meet for. Learn to understand that you don’t need the big young people who become like my children who hold their or the exciting to enjoy life but that life can be found dreams in front of them. They are ready to take on the in the truly monotonous routines we engage in every world and the world has not disappointed them yet. And I day of our lives.
