The EMAAC Visual Journals Group has once again assembled a showing of works completed in the last year. The diverse themes and mixed media are the work of Cindi Andersen, Fran Anderson, Carol Casady, Susan Haygood, Candace Lee, and Judy Malys. They will show journals that were shared with each member of the group as well as works of art for the table and wall. This year, the group has assembled a work for the wall which includes sections from each member. The theme for this work is “Route 66” and the proceeds from this piece will be donated to EMAAC. - Candace Lee

Visual journaling has existed throughout history as a process of reflective thinking, and as a record of image making. Throughout history great thinkers recorded and reflected on their ideas using a variety of visual journaling techniques. From Thomas Edison’s light bulb sketches to Leonardo DaVinci’s visual journals of flying machines to Stephen Hawking’s space-time diagrams, this record of image making also served as a record of the thought process. Exploring the thought process through visual journaling is essential in a world that is in continuous change Da Vinci (1452-1519) carried a visual journal with him at all times so that he could record ideas, impressions, and observations as they occurred. His journals, of which seven thousand pages exist, contained observations and thoughts of scholars he admired, personal financial records, letters, reflections on domestic problems, philosophical musings and prophecies, plans for inventions, and treatises on anatomy, botany, geology, flight, water, drawings and paintings.

On August 20, Professor David J. Weber died at his summer home in Timberlake. He was internationally acknowledged to be one of our nation's most distinguished historians. David wrote more than 20 books. Among those of special interest to New Mexico enthusiasts were On the Edge of Empire, The Taos Hacienda of Los Martinez, The Mexican Frontier, 1821 to 1846, Trading in Santa Fe, and What Caused the Pueblo Revolt of 1680? Perhaps his finest achievement was The Spanish Frontier in North America which was selected by the New York Times as a notable book of 1992 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. David was knighted by order of the King of Spain and received Mexico's Order of the Aztec Eagle. David was talented, humble and humorous. Two weeks before his death, he gave a talk at the Gallery on his latest book. Our sincere sympathies to David's wife, Carol, and his family and friends. David will be sorely missed. - HL

FAREWELL, DAVID WEBER

WATER… OUR MOST PRECIOUS COMMODITY

The "village" of El Morro, including EMAAC (5%), Ancient Way Cafe and RV Park (51%), Inscription Rock Trading (22%) and property owners Lou and Billie Gross (22%) collectively get our water from a well north of the Gallery. We have recently begun meeting to address issues that impact all of us. All operating businesses have installed meters at our intake points, as the water is shared proportionately as shown above. We will ultimately install a meter at the well head, as a neighboring rancher is entitled to as much of the well production as the rest of us combined. We share the cost of electricity for the pump and have just worked with the NM Department of Transportation to replace a critical aging length of pipe which runs under the part of NM 53 currently under construction. The group now meets quarterly and Gerry Ackerman is EMAAC's representative on the Well Shareholders group. This is just one of those arcane, but vital, complications of making the Gallery work, and an excellent example of our community's commitment to mutual cooperation. - HL 2010 BUSINESS CAMPAIGN DONORS As of Sept 13, 2010, the following area businesses have contributed to the annual EMAAC Business Campaign. EL MORRO VALLEY CO-OP UPDATE The Regional Food Hub that we are trying to develop is a new concept that is popular in Washington, but we are currently caught between new ideas and old guidelines. In July we met with New Mexico USDA Director Terry Brunner. He is looking into options and programs to see if He can find a "fit" for our project. We have also been in contact with Senator Bingamen's office for assistance and support. It is with optimism that we move forward. We believe that the right property and funding will become available and that this community will soon have a co-op food hub that will bring quality food to our area. We are always open to new ideas and new volunteers. Contact Rebecca Allina (505-495-9906). NM LIBRARY BOOKMOBILE WEST

From the Executive Director Members and Friends, It has been both stunning and heartening to witness the efforts of so many people, representing a rainbow of intentions and perspectives, boil down and focus energies into one purpose here at the Old School Gallery: to meet challenges with intelligence (and a sense of humor!) as we bring EMAAC into its next evolution. The sheer number of volunteer hours given willingly by our Docents, Board Members, and friends within the community establishes, without a doubt, that EMAAC is beloved and needed by our community- and that we are all willing to do what is necessary to weather any bumps that we may meet along the road. Special thanks to everyone who helped us to inventory the Gallery (this has changed my life- truly!), to Kirk Shoemaker- for covering all the bases, to Jeff Alford for his Herculean efforts and tax expertise, to Leslie Moosman- who coordinated an incredible Summer Youth Arts Program, to Susan Haygood -who has been cleaning up our records despite her shoulder injury, to our fabulous artists- who color our community with such beauty, to Maqui and Reed- who have been masterfully juggling our programming for the Gallery (and for the larger community as well!!), to Jerry and Susan Ackerman- who quietly and efficiently hold everything together, and with a smile! I could go on for pages, but I want to leave room for Harriet. Which brings me to Harry and Harriet. We all love them, and will miss them terribly as they follow their bliss all the way to Kansas City. To say “thank you” doesn’t really cover it, does it? The blessings that you have showered upon this community have rained long and deep, and will continue to nurture abundance for many, many years. My dear friends… may your journey be filled with love, laughter, and beauty. -Genevieve

From the President Dear Friends, It is with mixed emotions that Harry and I leave the El Morro area and EMAAC. We have made so many good friends and had so many good times (artistic and otherwise). We have learned that “We are all artists!” We have had the pleasure of working for and with the most unique and community-responsive organization on the planet. EMAAC lives up to its mission by being diverse and by nurturing all members’ creativity. Each member of the 2009-2010 Board has my respect for their hard work and accomplishments. We made a wise decision to hire Executive Director Genevieve Humenay, who, in her first three months, has faced and conquered many challenges with grace, courage and exceptional ability. We take with us wonderful memories of performances, workshops, exhibitions. We will certainly return over the years to visit you, our lifelong friends. All best wishes, Harriet
