Fourteen days, 13 of our gorgeous models and three epic luxury villas. Yep, this is how MAXIM does Bali…

MAXI M.COM.AU

When the famous Mandala Group from Bali invited us to stay at their villas with a promise of a rock star experience — they weren’t lying. The Mandala Group (also known as @mandalaplaces on Instagram) has long been seen as the place where the “cool kids” stay when they go to Bali and we were ready to put them to the test and find out why. We arrived to a beautiful tropical oasis, sharing the first week between the cosy, artinspired Mandala home and the epitome of a famous person’s pad, the iconic Mandala House. Waking up to the serenity of rice paddy fields with the buzzing town centre of Canggu a five-minute walk away, we had the best of both worlds. Early rises, with hair and make-up starting at 6am, led to relatively early nights with the models banking their beauty sleep in order to put their best faces forward for the shoots that were to following

in the coming days. The incredible sunrises were definitely not to be missed and our obsession with “golden light” was fulfilled as it proved to be a Bali specialty at both sunrise and sunset. Our second week was a whole new world away from the busy moped and latte culture of Canggu. The new addition to the Mandala Property Family, known as The Rocks in Uluwatu, has to be seen to be believed. Nestled at the bottom of the famous Uluwatu Cliffs, with absolute waterfront positioning, we were at one with the ocean. Photoshoots were dictated by the timing of the tides coming in and out as our beach would disappear at high tide under the crashing waves. The freshly renovated property was nothing short of a dream. The local monkey population seemed to also love our villa and were on hand to swoop in on unsupervised meals – especially the banana pancakes – and swipe the occasional pair of sunglasses or anything else left lying about. Needless to say, we learnt our lessons about leaving things out in the open, very quickly. It was wonderful to welcome back some of our models from the Destination MAXIM – Thailand trip, including Ashley, Elizabeth, Arielle and Kalyssa, and celebrate the successes they had experienced as a result of their previous experience with us. Our trips are fast becoming the “go to” for

models wanting to increase their portfolios and grow their social media. The Bali trip was also a great success for a number of the models who managed to achieve new agency signings and international assignments as a result of the exposure from their MAXIM appearances. A big thank you to the amazing staff running the Mandala villas who lost count of the coconut drinks and iced lattes they kept on constant flow to keep us cool and fuelled. We look forward to new adventures in 2019.

FULL NAME: Carly Louise Lippiatt HOMETOWN: Newcastle, NSW BORN: February 19, 1993 FIVEWORD SELF DESCRIPTION: “This is a bit of a mixture but I’d say Intuitive, humble, funny, rowdy and caring.” FAVOURITE DRINK: “Smirnoff Double Black, or any vodka really – I’m easily pleased as long as it’s alcoholic.” HANGOVER CURE: “A big, fat, greasy meal… and cuddles.” GIRL CRUSH: “Margot Robbie. She’s such a babe and I could look at her all day.” LIFE MOTTO: “Thoughts become things.” INSTAGRAM. SNAPCHAT: @carlslippiatt

Carly Tell us a bit about yourself? I was born and raised in Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia and I work as a beauty advisor at Sephora. I absolutely love my job but since becoming a make-up artist I’ve always been interested in modelling as the majority of our work is done on models. I never really had the confidence to push myself into modelling until one day I thought, “Just go for it!” Now I have modelled for one of Australia’s biggest men’s magazine and it definitely won’t be the last. What would people be most surprised to know about you? I’m a very intuitive person and I’m super into law of attraction and manifestation. I’m also very spiritual and really interested in card readings and crystals – I even have my own tarot cards and do my own readings at home. Describe your MAXIM experience in Bali? My interpretation of the trip was to empower women and to give a select group of women a chance to really pursue their dreams. Not only that but one thing I learnt was self-love which was massive for me and it’s so important for anyone – believe in yourself and know that you can and will achieve that dream and the universe will present opportunities and experiences to achieve that.

When do you feel sexy? This sounds a bit strange but honestly I feel most sexy in active-wear. I love the curves of my body and I feel so confident when wearing it. Even though I never actually work out at all I just wear it because it looks good. What is your best asset? My eyes. Even though a lot of people would probably say my boobs, I love the colour of my eyes and I always get asked if I’m wearing contacts What have you learned about men over the years? Younger or older it doesn’t matter – they all enjoy playing games. Focus on loving yourself until someone comes along and falls in love with you the same way you do. What’s one thing men should always know about women? They should know we always find out everything! If they don’t believe it, try us – we got skills. Where would you like to be in five years? Successful and happy – that’s all I’m striving for.

Ashley Tell us a bit about yourself. I’ve been modelling full-time for about three years now and it has given me great opportunities to have lifelong friends and memories around the world. Bali is my 20th country and probably 800 new friends added to my heart. I feel so grateful and blessed to have travelled the world and pray this streak continues. How would you describe this Destination MAXIM – Bali experience? I spent a week in Bali with the loveliest ladies from around the

FULL NAME: Ashley Arre BORN: May 14, 1994 HOMETOWN: Miami Beach, Florida USA NICKNAME: “My nickname is Cupcake because I’m the sweetest girl you will ever know.” FIVEWORD SELF DESCRIPTION: “Kind, curious, loving, smart and beautiful.” HIDDEN TALENT: “Cooking. I’ve always enjoyed cooking since I was a child and my favourite thing to cook is my mum’s recipes turned healthy – such as cauliflower mac and cheese and crunchybaked fried chicken.

world and we had a full week of laughs, lingerie, sexy swimwear, champagne and photo shoots. This experience, from MAXIM Australia, is to showcase amazing beauty and create special lifetime friendships. Got any quirky stories from this particular trip? The most entertaining thing to do with my free time was visit the local market and pick up new snacks. The most outrageous was “candy cheese”, which turned out to be perfectly-cut pieces of cheese in circles wrapped in a clear plastic – just like a candy. I found this so hilarious and now it’s my new favourite snack.

When do you feel sexy? I love wearing matching lingerie – knowing I’m hiding something sexy under my otherwise casual clothes is super fun for me. What is your best asset? My perfect pearly whites. A great smile is the perfect accessory for any occasion and I love to smile. What’s one thing men should always know about women? That we are Goddesses and should always be treated as so. Women are creators of human life and therefore the most important beings on earth. Men should worship women and always go the extra mile to appease us.

Julia Tell us a bit about yourself. I grew up just outside of Vancouver, Canada. As a kid I was very shy, kind of awkward and different, but over the years I’ve become very independent and carefree. I’ve always loved to travel and started modelling a couple years ago. My first ever modelling trip was to Milan and it’s when I realised I had a passion for the industry. Now I’m travelling and making connections all over the world! Are there any other funny anecdotes you can share about this MAXIM trip and shoot? One of my lingerie shoots was in

front of some locals on motorbikes. They seemed more embarrassed than I was to be shooting in front of them. It was my first time in Bali so I was so excited to get the opportunity to travel to such a beautiful place for work. What is your best asset? My positive presence and how caring I am of others. What would people be most surprised to know about you? That I’m only 19 years old and consider myself to be very intelligent and independent.

What do you look for in a man? I’m never looking but the ones that catch my eye is a man that’s smiling with confidence, independent and has a great sense of humour. Describe your ideal date. My ideal date would be something simple like going on a hike or doing something outdoors. What’s next for you? I will be continuing modelling full-time. Next, I’m off to Mexico, Australia, Europe and America!

Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m originally from a very small coastal town in NSW. As soon as I was able to work I got a job, started saving to move away and ended up on the Gold Coast. Then I became a registered nurse and through being creative with my social media I started picking up modelling work. How long have you’ve been modelling? I’ve been modelling on and off for the last year. When I’m not modelling I work as a registered nurse in an acute critical care area that treats people of all ages and medical conditions, which is very rewarding. I’ve also just been accepted into a Law program so that will also be keeping me busy! When do you feel sexy? At the beach or by the pool, with no make-up, swimming and relaxing in the sun. What is your best asset? A friendly down-to-earth personality with an itty-bitty waist and a round thing in your face!

MAXI M.COM.AU

What have you learned about men over the years? They make great friends. I love getting my guy friends’ opinions and I’m intrigued by their outlook on life.

Describe your ideal date. Hiking and exploring the wilderness then dinner and drinks at a nice restaurant followed by a movie at night.

What’s one thing men should always know about women? Communication and a little romance goes a long way.

Where would you like to be in five years? I’d like to be a successful lawyer and each year travelling to a third world country to volunteer my nursing skills.

What do you look for in a man? Someone who is romantic, intelligent, ambitious, hardworking and confident.

Andrea FULL NAME: Andrea Sokolowski BORN: November 21, 1997 HOMETOWN: Edmonton, Canada FIVEWORD SELF DESCRIPTION: “Fun, optimistic, adventurous, intellectual and athletic.” FAVOURITE DRINK: “A Guinness.” HIDDEN TALENT: “I can play the saxophone.” PHOBIAS: “Sharks – which is ironic because I love the ocean.” LIFE MOTTO: “Go where you feel most alive. Keep chasing moments that don’t feel human. A dream can become your reality and it is achievable. Don’t let anyone tell you how you should live your life, this is your world. And keep holding that vision of your future self and it will appear.” INSTAGRAM: @andrea.sokolowski SNAPCHAT: @hacunamatata69

Tell us a bit about yourself? I was born in a small town in Canada. My mum is Spanish and my dad is Polish. Growing up I’ve been very ambitious and I was always trying different things. I recently worked at BMW, selling cars, and it taught me how to hustle. I quickly became very good at it but I’ve always still been an avid model. I’ve also always dreamt of moving overseas to Australia to pursue a modelling career and learning how to surf. My dream is to wake up every morning next to the ocean, enjoying life and meeting new and interesting people. How long have you’ve been modelling? Since I was 17. If I wasn’t modelling I’d probably learn how to fly a plane, become a pilot and travel the world. What would people be most surprised to know about you? Growing up in a multilingual household I learned how to speak fluently in English, French and Spanish. What is your best asset? My tanned skin and eyes – people tell me all the time that I look very exotic because of these features. I’m also a very good listener and love making people laugh.

When do you feel sexy? On a hot summer’s day, tanned, no make-up, in a bikini and laying on the beach.

adventurous, intelligent and full of energy with an insane imagination, great sense of humour and most importantly fun.

What have you learnt about men over the years? Men are interesting creatures. I’ve learnt you have to be straightforward with them and show them how you want to be treated. If they can’t show you that respect, let them go.

What’s your hangover cure? Before going to bed, put Epsom salts into a bath, as hot as you can handle, and soak for 20 minutes then drink a tall glass of water. Sometimes, though, I just eat two Big Macs, lie on the floor, watch the whole season of Sex and the City and pray for life.

What’s one thing men should always know about women? Women like honesty. Men who are honest with their feelings or thoughts are much more desirable than men who just continue to go with the flow. Show the initiative when talking to us but be humble.

What’s next for you? Enjoying life, travelling, creating content, expanding myself as an individual, growing my career in modelling and other possible careers. I plan on moving to Australia within the next couple months – pretty exciting!

What do you look for in a man? Someone driven, confident, patient, MAXI M.COM.AU

FULL NAME: Valeria Sizova HOMETOWN: Vladivostok, Russia LIVES: Sydney, NSW BORN: July 3, 1992 FIVEWORD SELF DESCRIPTION: “Well, it’s more than five words but I’d say I’m hardworking, caring, loyal, always keen to learn more and be the best version of myself every day.” FAVOURITE DRINK: “Mojito extra sweet and extra mint, please, with some cherries on top!” HANGOVER CURE: “Try Russian style – a sauna sweating session with 80-100 degrees heat and then jump in a twometre-high snowlike freezing cold pool. Guaranteed recovery!” LIFE MOTTO: “Never compare yourself to anyone else!” INSTAGRAM: @valeria.sizova

Valeria Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m originally from Russia and moved on my own to Australia at the age of 17 to obtain an Australian education. I completed a Bachelor of Political and Social Sciences degree majoring in Government and International Relations, planning to become a politician. I’ve completed Certificate 3 & 4 in Fitness, I’m a qualified Master Trainer and Nutritionist adviser and I’m currently the winner of Miss Russia Australia 2017, Miss NSW Face of Origin 2017 and First runnerup in the 2018 MAXIM Swimwear Model of the Year. I’m also the owner of Icrave Dance & Entertainment company that is catering to the artistic community of the greater Sydney area and Australia. Are there any other funny anecdotes you can share about this Bali trip and shoot? Except the wild monkeys willing to steal our bikinis, or anything kept in our stunning opened-to-jungle bathrooms, there were also water snakes, tropical creatures hiding in the water and jungle but we were pretty safe on this trip considering I got back to Australia!

What is your best asset? My eyes. The way you look into the camera or anyone can give so much more sense of sexuality and flirtatious nature than just a bum shot for my forever-favourite ‘hump day’ Instagram post. Otherwise, it is my never-gone Russian accent. When do you feel sexy? Wearing a bikini or lingerie because it emphasises woman’s sexuality and unique shape in each of us. What have you learned about men over the years? Men are forever kids in their hearts, so as long as you play with them, and feed them on time, they will be happy. What do you look for in a man? Sense of humour, loyalty, generosity and intelligence. What’s next for you? My next overseas trip is in China after my success at an International Beauty Pageant, this time to represent Australia at the Fashion shows. Then a trip to LA in mid-2019 for two months and dance choreography and catwalk training throughout the year.

Kalyssa “During Destination MAXIM — Thailand I learned multiple fundamentals on how to expand not only my modelling career but also myself. Being around other experienced professionals in the industry inspired me to level-up and go even further. That next step for me was taking full control of my social media and using it as a business platform. Posting branded images, consistently, day-to-day on my Instagram, as well as being engaging with my followers has resulted in a major growth. I’ve grown from 38,000 followers to 85,000+ (and still counting!) followers in just two months. This has had an enormous effect on my personal brand to the point that other brands started taking notice in me and my page. Once I knew I was returning with MAXIM Australia in Bali, I decided to learn from Thailand and take advantage of

MAXI M.COM.AU

the opportunity by creating content in such a beautiful villa. While I was focused on creating content for my Instagram I was also ready to carry on the vibes from Thailand into Bali for these photo shoots. The villa we stayed in was magical – it was located right on the beach’s shore and overlooked the crystal blue waters of Bali’s ocean. Imagine waking up to the sounds of waves every morning – I couldn’t get enough of it! The MAXIM team was amazing to work with, once again, to say the least and it was great being able to meet new models from various locations around the world.

Our photo shoot locations were in the villa as well as taking full advantage of the gorgeous sands wearing Mary Holland lingerie. At one point we were even able to see monkeys! Overall, Destination MAXIM – Bali was an unforgettable experience and I’m entirely grateful to have met and worked with the MAXIM team. Thank you so much for believing in me and creating magic together.”

Amy FULL NAME: Amy Rebecca BORN: November 21, 1994 HOMETOWN: Miami, Florida USA LIVES: Hollywood, California, USA FIVEWORD SELF DESCRIPTION: “I’d say confident, ambitious, freespirited, introverted and kind.” HOBBIES: “I like to relax and watch movies. More often than not, I’m always working on something or I take a class to improve a skill.” HIDDEN TALENT: “I have tremendous flute playing skills.” PHOBIA: “I’m afraid of small bugs. Terrified!” FAVOURITE DRINK: “Tequila Casamigos Anejo soda with extra lime or bubbles, please.” LIFE MOTTO: “Carpe Diem.” INSTAGRAM: @curvyphysique

Tell us a bit about yourself. I was born in Florida, USA but spent my childhood in the Dominican Republic. I was a very shy kid and always the teacher’s pet. When I moved back to Florida I joined the marching band and was a big band nerd. Afterwards, when I graduated, from studying economics, I pursued fitness by competing. Now, I’m in Hollywood living as one of the top fitness models and an actress. Life is great! How long have you’ve been modelling? For about two years. If I wasn’t modelling I’d be working in banking or finance… or perhaps a flight attendant. What would people be most surprised to know about you? How silly I am. I like to make jokes and lighten up the mood. Are there any funny anecdotes you can share about this Bali trip and photo shoot? Yes! While I was doing my photo shoot, a group of monkeys came along and started throwing rocks.

I personally couldn't believe it! Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but it was hilarious nonetheless. When do you feel sexy? All the time because feeling sexy all starts with your attitude and I choose to be sexy every day. What is your best asset? I think my legs. I love the shape of them and it’s something that took hard work to build. Otherwise, I’d say my personality – most people think I’m nice and charming. What have you learned about men over the years? That they can’t all be compared the same. What’s one thing men should always know about women? When a girl is nice to you it doesn’t mean they are romantically interested in you. It’s annoying when guys assume that I’m interested in them because I’m a nice person – it kind of forces girls to not be friendly. What do you look for in a man? Personality, passion and drive. I love passionate people. Looks catch my attention, but I prefer an amazing personality and character to come with it. And a sense of humour and intelligence is a major turn on! Describe your ideal date. Riding in a hot air balloon over a countryside while drinking champagne. I would instantly fall in love if this were to happen. What’s next for you? I’m planning on relocating to New York City and super excited because it’s always been a dream of mine to live there.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Well, I’m from Perth in WA and have been modelling my whole life. I was signed at a very young aged and started travelling the world for my career. The first place I moved to was London, which was incredible, then Milan and also USA, Dubai and Bali. My career has never been easy but I’ve never given up on my dream. This year really showed me what can happen when you don’t give in. What would people be most surprised to know about you? I’m a little bit shy when I’m around someone I really like and I talk a lot when I’m nervous. What is your best asset? I would say my booty but I’d also say my eyes and lips.

When do you feel sexy? When I’m very tanned and have my hair and nails freshly done. What have you learned about men over the years? That they are very confusing to understand. What do you look for in a man? Someone who is very driven for his career and very down to earth and caring. I also like a guy who is very much into his fitness and wellbeing

and who would love to travel the world with me! Describe your ideal date. A beautiful, romantic dinner either looking over the city skyline or a beautiful ocean view. What’s next for you? I have some very exciting things coming up as I’ll be heading to London and then Singapore for work and early next year I’ll be shooting a campaign in Thailand and so much more – I can’t wait!

Laura Tell us a bit about yourself. I’ve been in the modelling industry forever, I was scouted at 14 years old and it’s been a great journey. Six years ago I knew my purpose was to help new models navigate the industry with ease and share my knowledge. I can proudly say I now have a top mother agency that is listed on models.com who represent over 40 internationally working models worldwide.

but it’s been my own internal struggle to embrace my curves – the MAXIM team certainly helped me with this. Another great asset I have is my work ethic – when I want or believe in something I can’t be stopped.

What would people be most surprised to know about you? That I trained my whole life to be an opera singer! I even sang one night for the MAXIM team on this trip. I’ll say the Mandala house has gorgeous acoustics.

What’s one thing men should always know about women? Women want to see your soft and sensitive side when the time is right. The “bad boy” only gets the girl for so long.

When do you feel sexy? When I’m all dressed up in a little black dress with perfect hair and make-up. I feel I can take over the world this way! What is your best asset? I’ve been told my butt is pretty great

MAXI M.COM.AU

What have you learned about men over the years? That they all have a soft interior even though they may act macho or masculine.

What do you look for in a man? I look for someone determined and driven in their own careers who understands mine and wants me to shine – and as a result we both shine. Power-couple goals! Describe your ideal date. I’m a foodie so I will always say amazing wine and delicious food at a top rated restaurant.

What’s next for you? I’m hoping to expand my agency in a huge way! It’s definitely about time I bring on a team to help me and delegate. Running this company all alone for six years has been quite a grind but so worth it. I can’t say too much, but stay tuned!

Elizabeth When do you feel sexy? If I’m alone, I feel sexiest when I’m naked. If I have company, I feel sexiest in an oversized T-shirt with no bra on. In the winter, the sexiest feeling is to be completely naked on a pile of cozy blankets by the fire place. What is your best asset? Physically, I love my boobs and legs. But my best asset overall would have to be my brain and not just from an intellectual purview. In the US, I went to an Ivy League school called Columbia University, which only accepts around five percent

of its applicants, and graduated at the top of my class. I didn’t do that by being the smartest person in the proverbial room, but by being the most hardworking and persistent student. I just never gave up. What would people be most surprised to learn about you? That I play the piano and went to an Ivy League school. Even though I didn’t play sports or an instrument in college, I did play soccer on the USA Olympic Development Program in high school. I was a big tomboy before I started modelling professionally.

What have you learned about men over the years? I’ve learned to never touch the thermostat unless I’m ready for war! Also, if a man is really into you he will make time for you. There’s always exceptions, but if he can’t make the

time that means you’re not a priority. And the same can go for women as well. What do you look for in a man? Externally, I don’t really look for anything in particular in a man except confidence (not to be confused with arrogance). I look at the way he carries himself and treats others. Also, if he can cook that’s a bonus. Like a man, the way to my heart is through my stomach. Feed me well and I’m yours. Internally, kindness and patience. With time, looks will change and evolve, but kindness is perennial. Where would you like to be in five years? In my dream scenario, I’d love to start a family and live off of passive income, perhaps by being on a board of a company or charity, and just travel and raise money for charities and causes I adore. Fortunately, I’m a realist, so five years from now I’d like to have expanded my personal brand to encompass fashion and modelling, as well as health and wellness.

I’ve always travelled, so exploring the world has been a gift that has shown me who I am. I’m a free spirit and my friends have always considered me the life of the party – not in a crazy way, just that I set positive vibes to everyone, everywhere I go. Legendary Australian Socceroo, and recent football retiree, TIM CAHILL reminisces about his illustrious career, discusses his new role as ambassador for Where Heroes Are Made, how he wants to leave this world and whether he’s going to Heaven or Hell… P H OTO G R A P H E D BY SA M U E L C R O S K E RY

Hey, Timmy, now you’re retired, what did you love most about playing for the Socceroos? It comes from the honour of representing your country on the world stage. This is something taught to you early on in Australia — it’s an honour and not something you can ever take for granted. How difficult was it to make the call on retiring from the Socceroos? It wasn’t too hard to be honest – I knew I was making the right call and that my family totally supported my decision.

I N T E R V I E W BY S A N T I P I N TA D O

India is opening my eyes to another amazing country. What are your top three highlights of your illustrious career? Winning the 2015 Asian Cup, beating Japan in the 2006 World Cup and playing in the EPL. The three World Cup campaigns were all highlights in their own right. Each had really special moments and playing on the biggest stage in the world against so many superstars is amazing.

be coming on, I just knew I wanted to make an impact. To score those goals and then for John [Aloisi] to finish it off 3-1 was massive for the entire squad as it was Australia’s first ever goals and first ever World Cup win. How does it feel to be the all-time top goal scorer for Australia? Looking at the amazing players that came before me and the ones that I have played with — to be on that list is great in itself. To me, it’s a reward for hard work more than anything. It’s also thanks to a lot of great service from my teammates.

“LOOKING AT THE AMAZING PLAYERS WHO CAME BEFORE ME AND THE ONES THAT I HAVE PLAYED WITH ʗ HC 69 CB H<5H @=GH =G GREAT IN ITSELF.”

You’ve played in many different leagues around the world – which one are you most proud of? I’ve loved experiencing so many different countries and every league has been great in its own way. The UK is football 24/7 which was all I ever wanted growing up. America was on another level with the entertainment aspect and China was incredible to experience a culture that’s very different to anywhere I had played before. Coming home to Australia was special because of the connection with the fans and now

You scored Australia’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal in 2006. Describe this moment. That game in itself was such a rollercoaster. From finding out I would be on the bench to start, which was devastating at the time. Seeing us go down 1-0 and then getting told I would

Besides comraderies with teammates, what will you miss most about being part of the Socceroos? Putting on the jersey before a match and that feeling of stepping out to represent your country. That feeling is going to be pretty hard to replace. What do you think is the greatest ever moment in football? World Cups — it just doesn’t get any better than that.

What’s one not-so-greatest moment in football? End of season – I would play 24/7 if they would let me! How do you want to leave this world? Happy! That’s the only way to go. What would be your last meal? Definitely a home cooked meal from my mum. Are you going to Heaven or Hell? Not sure – guess I’ll have to wait and see. Which legendary people will you hang out with in the afterlife? Nelson Mandela and Muhammad Ali have been two idols of mine. What’s the greatest Tim Cahill moment that never saw the light of day? Every goal I scored in the backyard against my brothers! Besides family, what’s your greatest achievement during your time on Earth? Football and hopefully inspiring kids to follow their dreams. Tell us how you got involved with Where Heroes Are Made. When I was asked about being involved I jumped at the opportunity because although I don’t play in Australia anymore, I am always keeping an eye on the Westfield W-League, Hyundai A-League and the players who are coming through. Where Heroes Are Made is all about celebrating the talent that we have playing week in, week out in Australia and encouraging fans to go along and see their club’s heroes in action. What does being a Hero Scout for “Where Heroes Are Made mean to you? For me, it’s about building up the amazing talent we have here in the W-League and A-League. Amy and I went through every club and each one has players that fans should be really excited about for this season. What advice do you have for the current Socceroo squad? It’s mostly about being a top professional all of the time, not just when you’re in Socceroos camp. It’s something you

should be doing every day whether it is submitting your training and diet details or doing extra prehab and rehab. Taking the intensity off Socceroos camp and trying to reach that level all of the time. Finally, what quality advice do you have for our readers? ust when you thought you’d never see a new released Holden in 2019 — along comes the Holden Bathurst Time Attack Concept (sort of ). Designed and developed as a futuristic racer to mark the 50th anniversary of the company’s first major at Bathurst, it is just in concept mode for now, but we’ll take it. The surprisingly employed people at the R&D department at Holden, in Australia, wanted to prove that their precious make isn’t just a badge that General Motors slaps on their yank tanks. So they came up with a groundbreaking

concept that uses fans, airflow, and downforce to move — all while teasing the hell out of long suffering fans nationwide. According to the engineering team, various aerodynamic features would assist the racer with several fans that would accelerate airflow through the aero dams and holes to increase downforce. The result would be the minor outcome of 6.5 G-Forces while travelling — similar to an F1 car during cornering. Powered by four electric motors (one on each wheel) that would produce a total 1000kW,

a reinforced kevlar/carbon fibre body would enable the racer to handle the immensely defiant force produced by the motors. From the tunnels that run on either side of the monocoque, to the ginormous diffuser at the back, to the massive rear wing — everything looks like it came from 2050. It’s electric, exciting and promising. And we wish like hell they’d make it today. But Holden’s virtual simulation has it lapping the Mount Panorama track in one minute and 29.3 seconds — so we’ll be gaming in the meantime.

Known as the E-tron GT, this sedan gets its electric power — not from Thor’s hammer — but from the same battery set-up and drive train that will run Porsche’s first EV, the Taycan. Pushing the electric vehicle standard, the

E-Tron will have a range over 400 km thanks to a 90kW battery located under the (toasty) seating area, and reports of 434kW (590 ponies) coming from its two front and rear mounted motors aren’t just rumours. That 90kW battery provides major buzz for the two electric motors, and throws down 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. Sharing Porsche’s Taycan tech, this will also feature lightning fast charging — 800 volts ensure the battery system can go from limp to Viagra in just 30 minutes, faster

than anything in the current market — including Tesla’s Superchargers. For extra perks, the GT can also be charged by parking it above a contactless inductive charging pad overnight. To learn the beginnings of this beast you have to go back to the noughties when it was known as the smaller, tamer T309. Back then it only possessed 100 horsepower (74kW), so it’s unfair to compare it to today’s big-bore bikes, where 140 horses (104kW) don’t even make the cut. Forward to 2019 and there are new, tougher valve springs,

S

oaring through the sky somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, perhaps an hour after leaving Hong Kong on a flight to Los Angeles, a loaded, legit cocktail cart comes rolling out for service. This is about as far from the standard in-flight routine — where you’re grateful to keep the whole can of soda to refill your plastic cup with bottom-shelf whiskey and Coke — as you can get.

3 8

MAXI M.COM.AU

This is luxe in-flight drinking, with signature cocktails ready to be mixed up at your beckoning. You can partake of quality spirits such as Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve scotch whisky and Hine Rare VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac, or prestigious wine vintages and varietals, served in real glassware. When it comes to drinking in style while soaring above the clouds, your best bet is choosing the right long-

haul international carrier and upgrading your seat. Consider it an investment in sheer, giddy travelling happiness. Cathay Pacific Airways is one such carrier that has helped transform the flight experience from something to endure to something to revel in and enjoy. Begin your flight with a welcome glass of bubbles from a rotating assortment of vintage Champagnes, such as Krug Brut 2004 or the 2006 Tattinger Comtes de Champagne. An equally compelling line-up of reds and whites are available, handpicked to match a broad range of tastes while pairing perfectly with the lavish, multicourse meals served on board. Cathay Pacific’s head of Food & Beverage and Hospitality, Bernard Mills, notes that the airline’s wine panel, including Master of Wine Debra Meiburg and wine educator Roy Moorield, blind tastes hundreds of wines and spirits each quarter to make their selections. Those signature cocktails aren’t haphazardly put together, either; they are actually the winning entrants of a competition involving a handful of Hong Kong’s top bartenders. It’s not just alcoholic beverages that are getting an upgrade. When you’re ready to freshen up in the morning, you can choose from an assortment of fine teas from Jing or freshly brewed Illy coffee and espresso. You can even it a bit of wellness into your travel routine, as Cathay Pacific has partnered with Pure Yoga to develop a series of videos available through each seat’s entertainment system. Select one at your leisure and follow along to get guided instruction for in-flight

stretching and meditation. Of course, where comfort is concerned, business class is just the beginning. There’s always another upgrade, another experience to chase — up to first class, up to one of the enclosed rooms or suites that several carriers such as Singapore Airlines and Emirates now offer, or even up to your very own private jet. The good news is you don’t have to buy one, and renting a plane on either a one-of basis or as part of an ongoing subscription or membership is easier than ever. Consider Magellan Jets, an ondemand air charter service with tiers of bespoke memberships based on how far, and how frequently, you’ll be travelling, and what types of aircraft will be at your disposal. At this level, ask and you shall receive. “In flight, there’s nothing that can’t happen,” says Anthony Tivnan, Magellan’s president and co-founder. “It really comes [down] to your imagination, and your wants and expectations.” Bring a massage therapist along for the ride, a personal chef, or your own bartender. Enjoy stacked seafood towers on fine china plating. Or have the crew actually pick up food from your favourite restaurant to be prepared and served during the flight. As Tivnan says, “Anything is possible.” ■

PARNIA PORSCHE (PP): Hey, Charlie, congrats on this feature shoot with me and being the first man to grace a MAXIM Australia cover. How do you feel? CHARLIE SHEEN (CS): I’m honoured, flattered and, when I heard it was with you, I was thrilled. I’m not saying it carries the same weight as Peter Sellers being the first male on the cover of Playboy in 1964, but let’s just say it’s pretty darn close and perhaps it opens the doors for others to follow. PP: Well, it’s a great shoot, if I say so myself. Besides getting to work with me, what did you enjoy most about the shoot? CS: Well, there really isn’t a “besides getting to work with you” as that was the best part – period, the end. When I got the call to do it I made my decision in a couple of seconds as it seemed like a great idea. We shot it in Downtown L.A. a few months ago and Arthur, the photographer, was terrific, the gentlemen who attended the shoot from MAXIM Australia magazine were fabulous and I thought we completed our task in a very timely manner. PP: I really enjoyed working with you — you are a gentleman and were professional the whole time. Could you say the same for me? CS: Absolutely I could say the same for you! You’re a stone-cold pro and any of the shots I was uncomfortable with you made them that much easier. PP: Aw, shucks – I’m bushing! So… tell us about your role in the new Ultra Tune TV commercial and how you came to be the star of it? CS: Well, when I got the call, I did a little research and saw some of the previous Ultra Tune spots and was impressed with the tone and the energy. So, it made perfect sense for me to be the next Ultra Tune guy. Any funny behind-the-scenes anecdotes you can share with us? CS: I don’t know how funny it was but

the boat we shot it on could not have been more crowded. I guess the guy who lent it to us that day cut a deal that he could invite everyone he knows to kind of have a party in our vicinity. So yeah, that got a little bit trying at times. But save for the crowded house, the director Shannon Young was fabulous, the crew were amazing and you, along with the rest of your Ultra Tune crew, were nothing but fabulous. PP: How do you think I went doing this TV commercial? Was my acting up to scratch? CS: It was beyond “up to scratch”. It transcended “scratch”. You were fabulous and you had an absolute sense of reality and the truth. You were very subtle, had a terrific presence, great look — DUH! — and again, anything I was uncomfortable with you made it that much easier. PP: Thank you! Any tips you can give a wannabe actress like me? CS: First of all, stop referring to yourself as “wannabe” – you’re actually doing it! You’re not “wannabe”, you are a professional and I was impressed with your on-set demeanour, your focus and I don’t think they gave you enough material to really tap into your talents. I think you’ve got a future in this thing, kid. PP: Coming from you, that’s a great compliment — thank you! As a kid, did you always want to become a professional actor or something else? CS: Ah, speaking of kid! Well, I had my sights set on a career in professional baseball but I realised it was a bit of a pipe dream because, as a kid, I went to baseball camp and saw the real talent that was out there. For a lot of these guys it was either the military or jail or baseball — and that wasn’t my back story. But, as a child, I’d always made short films directing as a cinematographer, and editing every aspect of it, so I was drawn to it. Also, having grown up, around the world, on my father’s movie sets I got a first-hand bird’s eye view of how this thing works – top to bottom.

PP: You’ve worked with some fine actors in your time — who has been the best experience? CS: It’s really hard to answer that. You single out one experience or person and you piss off the rest of them. I’ve been really fortunate and blessed to have so many opportunities, so many different situations and so many different themes – it’s been a hell of a ride. Sometimes bumpy, but I guess that’s how it goes. People often ask me what’s the favourite film I’ve ever made and my answer is, “I’ve not made it yet.” PP: Sorry for the loaded question, but am I your favourite Ultra Tune Rubber Girl? CS: Hands down! Period – the end. And, again, I just pissed off the rest of the crew but I think they’ll get over it. PP: You’ve been to Australia before coming here to film the latest Ultra Tune ad. How did your recent trip compare with past visits? CS: This one took the cake. I was well adjusted to the time immediately, I was focussed, I was excited to be there and the whole trip went off without a hitch or stumble or any drama – I did not leave one shred of wreckage behind. And I feel that all the invites to return are nothing but genuine. PP: What is it that you love most about Australia? CS: I would have to say the people. The people were nothing but gracious, friendly and engaging – everywhere I went there was nothing but love. PP: Other than hanging out with the Ultra Tune crew, what else did you get up to during your visit here? CS: Well, there wasn’t a lot of time. There were only a couple of days off and on those days I went to a sanctuary and did those touristy things with koalas and kangaroos, things like that. When I come back, there are definitely a few other things I’d love to explore. PP: Besides appearing in Ultra Tune ads, what else do you do with yourself these days? CS: I’ve actually been working on my autobiography, my memoir and it’s going really well. I can’t say too much about it but let’s just say it’s not going to be a boring read. PP: Describe a typical day in the life of Charlie Sheen? CS: Well, it’s just that – it’s typical. I get

“I CAN’T SAY TOO MUCH ABOUT IT BUT LET’S JUST SAY IT’S NOT GOING TO BE A BORING READ.” up super early, I get in the gym, I get in the pool, I spend a lot of time with my children – which any parent knows is a full-time job – and I’m just doing the things that I can control and I can embrace until something breaks professionally. And when it does I’ll be more than ready. I’ve always said, when in doubt – over-prepare. PP: Now, you’ve certainly had a few ups and downs in your life. Looking back at those “Tigerblood” and “#winning” days, what did you learn from that experience? CS: I learnt to not take shit so personally and choose your battles – there’s a time and a place to voice an opinion. You know, never leave a hit show, never get fired from a hit show… yeah, tons of regrets about all that stuff, but what are you going to do? It happened. Today is today and I can’t be defined by my past but good God people certainly remind me of it every goddamn day. But that’s alright, I know who I am and where I where I’m headed and, you know, they say the road to Heaven often leads straight through Hell and I feel like I’ve traversed the Hell part.

PP: When you watch old footage like the TV interview you did with America’s ABC News what goes through your mind? CS: I wish what went through my mind back then was a bullet to interrupt that whole fiasco. Yeah, that was a mess, and it sucks, but, you know, I’ve been doing this 35 years and it’s like I had one bad month and I think everybody loves a comeback. Most people are forgiving, and root for me, but let’s not persecute a guy for the rest of his life for one month out of three-and-a-half decades. Shit happens – you move on. PP: What advice do you have for men possibly going through a similar situation as you did back then? CS: I have no advice because NO-ONE will EVER go through what I did back then. It is cosmically unique and sadly or affectionately, or however you want to look at it, but I’m the guy who owns that. PP: What’s the secret to bouncing back from a situation like that? leading with humour, about making amends, about owning your shit and not forgetting what led to that epic derailment – then doing enough good stuff to not let anything that resembles that ever happen again. And, you know, bouncing back – I’ve bounced back. It’s just a question of when others are willing to move on from it and remove whatever scarlett letter I’ve been cursed with. I’m not bitter, I’m just a realist. PP: Got any tips for men on how to be a better man? CS: Well, I lead with no-one is above common courtesy. And that’s not just men – that’s men and women. If you hold that at the forefront, and if it’s engrained in the foundation of your character, then your decisions and your behaviour is a lot more gracious. PP: From your experience, over the years, what have you learnt about the following… Money? CS: Save it! Women? CS: Adore and respect them. Social media? CS: Avoid at all costs. Hollywood? CS: Love/hate. More love than hate. PP: What’s the biggest misconception about Hollywood? CS: The biggest misconception is that films are actually made in Hollywood. Except for the studio stuff, California is about the last place they film anything these days. PP: What’s one thing men should always know about women? CS: Oh jeez, you’re asking me? I’d say be patient. Women need to be loved and listened to – I think we all do – and women are more sensitive, they are gentler and they require a lot more grace in one’s approach to them. PP: What would people be most surprised to know about you? CS: Hard to say because these days it’s hard to really protect any private parts of one’s self. The general feedback I get

from the public, and people out and about in the world, is they always respond that I’m very normal, approachable and very decent. They don’t get any arrogance or any celebrity-type behaviour – whatever that is. And they’re always impressed that they feel like I’m just one of them. I don’t really know what that means because there is no “them” – we are all special. PP: What’s the funniest rumour you’ve ever heard about yourself? CS: I was described as being a Warlock Vatican Assassin, which I’m kind of flattered by, but I still have no idea what the f—k that means. PP: If you could ask Donald Trump anything what would it be? CS: Anything I answer to this question I will catch immense shit from, so I don’t know. I don’t really have an answer for this question… Yeah, I’m going to pass because I’d rather not spend any valuable energy discussing anything about that individual. PP: What’s your New Year’s resolution for 2019? CS: Well, it’s not going to be quitting drinking – I already did that – and I’m not going to say quit smoking because right now that’s not realistic. I guess just be kinder, more patient. Yeah, I don’t really have much there but I’ve changed a lot of things for the better, so New Year’s for me is just another day. PP: What’s next for Charlie Sheen? Any exciting projects on the horizon you can share with us? CS: There’s a couple that are looking really good. One is a film, one is a series, but I don’t really want to put anything in print in case something doesn’t happen. As things get closer to commencing you will be the first people that I alert. PP: Finally, where do you see yourself in five years? CS: Besides being 58? Jesus. Hopefully doing all the shit I love – professionally, personally, emotionally, creatively… Yeah, I still have a lot of cool stuff to do and I’ve got tons of energy to creative it, so it’s going to be exciting.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! Clinical Nutritionist and Naturopath BROOKE BENSON CAMPBELL (BHSc) presents 10 tips on achieving a stronger mind, healthier body and a better you in 2019…

I

t’s official — the weather is warm, summer festivities are in full swing and the new year is here. As we begin 2019, it’s essential we take a step back and consider ways to take better care of ourselves in the year ahead, and UWhiU``m UW\]YjY U ÆbYk mciÇ h\]g bYk year. Bookwell’s beauty and wellness expert, Brooke Benson Campbell, highlights 10 key focus points vital to achieving a healthy brain, healthy life and a better, stronger you.

1

ALLOW YOURSELF TO WIND DOWN BEFORE BED To set yourself up for a strong xa\Z\__\dy P_RNaR N PY\`V[T QNf _VabNY you can put into practice before bed each night to help you disconnect from any stresses experienced throughout the day. Make yourself a to-do list for the next day, which will help to prevent mind chatter and mental lists consuming your relaxation time. Your wind down should be a reflection of the day that was, not the day that is to come. Whilst you’re reflecting on your day, another great way to calm your mind is to drink powdered magnesium mixed in a glass of water. This will help to calm the nervous system and quieten the mind, paving the way for a deeper and more restful sleep.

2

TAKE THE NECESSARY STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE BEST REM SLEEP ?2: \_ x_N]VQ RfR Z\cRZR[ay V` X[\d[ as a unique phase of sleep distinguished by relaxation in muscles throughout the body and rapid eye movements. This is the deepest phase of sleep, where people experience their most vivid dreams. The key to achieving this phase of sleep and increased morning energy is melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain and works to manage your circadian rhythm and sleep pattern. Unfortunately, two of the most common pre-bed rituals tend to dampen melatonin secretion and affect sleep quality. Screen time (including postdinner TV, late-night laptop searches and Facebook-video frivolity) causes melatonin to remain at low levels due to blue light secretion. To avoid this, it is recommended that gadgets and electronics are turned off one hour before bedtime. However, if you find yourself relying on that last hour before bed for some much-needed screen time, consider investing in a blue light filtering for screens and phone apps as an alternative solution. Ditch the alcohol, too. While our favourite tipple may help us to fall asleep more easily, it discourages REM sleep. Swap the evening Negroni for a glass of tart cherry juice — a natural source of melatonin.

MAKE TIME FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

After the age of 30, testosterone levels begin to decline at the rate of around one percent per year. With a decline in hormone levels comes the beginning of muscle wastage and a lower bone density. To prevent these changes, it’s recommended that men in their 20s and 30s incorporate balance and flexibility training with cardio-heavy sessions. Ideally, add a yoga or Pilates reformer session once a week to boost sports performance and stress relief. Hailed by sports pros, there is no better training than yoga – you’ll be amazed at what it does for your flexibility, joint rotation and focus. Nine-time world champion surfer Kelly Slater practices yoga as regularly as cross-training. Enough said. As for how often you should get your blood pumping; five sessions of 45 minutes per week is optimal, but these sessions should be a mix of weights, cross-training, flexibility and strength work to minimise injuries and muscle imbalance and to support hormone release.

4

CHARGE YOUR BODY WITH SUPERFOODS

A must-have superfood to include in your daily regime is marine collagen. It’s 97 percent protein which contains essential amino acids and provides the body with structural building blocks for muscle regeneration and hormone synthesis. Given that your tendons and ligaments are around 96 percent collagen, this supplement works to support the healing of injuries and weight-bearing strength. It is also beneficial for gut health integrity and is high in glycine to boost muscle mass and metabolism.

5

CAFFEINE CAN BE THE ANSWER (IN HEALTHY MODERATION) Caffeine has received a bad rap of late, but between 1-3 cups of coffee per day is not only an appropriate amount but has actually been shown in clinical studies to support brain health. The caffeine in coffee does not just offer a short-term memory boost, but can actually enhance long-term cognitive performances, such as vigilance, response time, information processing and proofreading tasks. However, moderation is the key here. If consumed in mass quantities, the benefits can be replaced by anxiety, irritability, stomach upset, nervousness and heart palpitations, all of which are signs of caffeine overdose, and no fun for anyone.

6

EASE YOUR MIND AT WORK

At work, two small changes can help to simplify and streamline your day. Firstly, be strategic with emails. A person’s stress level can be directly correlated with how many times they check their email per day, so exercise a little self-discipline and limit visits to your inbox to balance stress levels. Secondly, use nature as a stress-reliever. Nature is visual valium, so take walking meetings where possible, or embrace a proper lunch break at the local park. Studies have shown that being in nature improves attention and offers rejuvenation to downgrade stress levels. Otherwise, if you’re more of an indoors type of person, squeeze in a soothing massage or acupuncture session during lunchtime using a real-time booking platform such as www.bookwell.com.au which will guarantee ultimate relaxation and distraction.

7

CHANGE UP YOUR WORK ENVIRONMENT WITH A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE Revamping your work environment and optimising productivity begins with a tweak in attitude. Celebrate the small victories and consciously reward yourself and your team with a pat on the back. This will encourage open communication between workmates and aid the team in working towards a culture of respect.

8

MINIMISE THE FIRSTDATE PANIC BY ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR STRENGTHS For those searching for love, it’s no secret that meeting someone new can be daunting. Before the initial meeting, it can be easy to get carried away with negative aU\bTUa` ~ PbR aUR xSV_`a QNaR S_RNX\bay A great way to counter this before walking into a date is to hone into your strengths. Think about your strengths, even write them down, to remind yourself of all the good qualities you bring to the table. For example, if humour is an asset of yours, make your date laugh until they cry. If you are knowledgeable, wow them with facts. If you are creative, let that energy `UV[R DUR_R NYY RY`R SNVY` xSNXR Va b[aVY f\b make it’. Faking confidence is a sure-fire way to encourage your body to produce hormones responsible for confidence: one feeds the other. A strong stance, a confident walk, open body language — all signs of confidence that can be employed to boost testosterone levels N[Q a_N[`S\_Z x]_RaR[Qy P\[SVQR[PR V[a\ x_RNYy P\[SVQR[PR ?RZRZOR_ Vay` YVXRYf [\a just you! Your date is human too and likely experiencing the exact same feelings.

WHEN GETTING PHYSICAL WITH SOMEONE NEW, KEEP TESTOSTERONE LEVELS IN CHECK Following the first date, things may start to heat up soon after, heading in a more physical direction. As with all new endeavours, patience is key. The biological ticket to allowing a relationship to progress naturally lies in balancing your testosterone levels. Testosterone is the powerhouse hormone behind a lack of impulse control and snaps in judgement. It has been proven that upping testosterone levels can result in men making judgements without ruminating on which decision is best (i.e prematurely speeding up the physical stage). The key to controlling impulse and behaviour, therefore, lies in balancing testosterone and cortisol levels. The method for doing so? An active lifestyle, low toxin exposure, and avoiding personal care products that contain phthalates, all work to balance hormones.

WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR LOVED ONES, ACTIONS MAY SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS

Science has proven that women tend to utilise speech and emotion more than ZR[ dU\ ]_RSR_ N xTRa a\ aUR ]\V[ay [\ frills communication approach. If poetic monologues and emotive words are your downfall, blame good-old biology. But never fear – actions truly do speak louder than words, and simple gestures rule supreme. Delivery of an impromptu cup of coffee in bed on the weekend (extra points if you’ve made it) or a home-cooked meal (even if it’s eggs on toast) can help to remind your loved one that you care. Feigning pretend interest in their obsession with reality TV or our deliberation over a particular shade of lipstick earns huge brownie points. Most importantly, though, show respect for their opinions (however ridiculous they may be) and know that regardless of how self-sufficient, intelligent and fierce your

loved one may seem, they are also in some way vulnerable, insecure and requiring support and reassurance (this applies to partners, friends, and family). ■

Hit Up The

HOLIDAYS MAXIM fitness guru ALEXA TOWERSEY has some essential top tips on staying fit during your silly season summer sabbatical…

MAXI M.COM.AU

I

t’s that time of year again. The most dedicated and hardcore lifters are using their holidays to go to the gym for two hours a day, six days a week, while the rest of you social butterflies are facing a time-crunched, often unavoidable four-to-six-week period packed full of shopping with girlfriends, family get-togethers, parties with mates, even more shopping with girlfriends, more parties and epic hangovers (hopefully not while shopping with girlfriends).

The mistake most guys make during the holiday season is trying to fit their regular workouts into their busier, more unpredictable holiday schedule. This never works. You’re just setting yourself up for failure. So, this year, commit to taking a more proactive approach and make a conscious decision that for a couple of months at the end of the year, you’re going to work with your lack of time, space and equipment. That way there are no excuses — aside from the fact that you’re a pussy.

You don’t need fancy equipment to do an effective workout Tabata is the name of a Japanese researcher who discovered an interesting way to increase both anaerobic and aerobic pathways at the same time — in layman’s aR_Z` a\ TRa Şa N` S~X 6ay` \[R \S those strange training programs that seems to translate across QV`PV]YV[R`' PfPYV[T ]\dR_YVƆV[T shredding. It all comes down to exercise selection. This training method is so simple, yet so V[P_RQVOYf QVƀPbYa aUNa ]R\]YR tend to try it once, acknowledge its greatness and then vow to never speak its name again. What is it? It’s simple: take one exercise and perform it in the following manner:

â—? For 20 seconds do as many repetitions as possible â—? Rest for 10 seconds â—? Repeat seven more times That’s right. Eight sets of “as many reps as you can get doneâ€? followed by a brief 10-second rest. You’re done in four minutes! And here’s the other thing — all those excuses about not being able to get to a gym can be thrown out the window because all you need for this workout is yourself and enough room that you can YNf Q\d[ S\_ N [N] NƆR_dN_Q` Now, I’m going to assume that if you’re actually reading this you’re looking for a full workout. So,

we’re going to expand on this concept and give you a full body session — 5 sets of Tabata backto-back for potentially the longest 20 minutes of your life. Perform each of the following exercises for the full eight sets, before taking a one to two-minute rest and moving on to the next.

Squat Push-up Sit-up Mountain Climber Burpee Record your numbers and aim to beat them every time.

MAXI M.COM.AU

H E A LT H & F I T N E S S

TOP TIP 1: INTRODUCING “ACTIVE REST”

If you’re already fit AF, then this sneaky little addition could be the ticket. Instead of taking the 10-second rest between sets, why not try an “Active Rest” and perform an isometric hold. Welcome to Tabata From Hell! SQUATS: hold the bottom position DIG<ʔID. hold a straight arm plank G=HʔID. Hold a hollow rock MOUNTAIN CLIMBER: hold an elbow plank BURPEE: alternate between the bottom of the squat and the straight arm plank NB: If you do happen to make it to the gym, you can use equipment with this protocol. Try Thrusters, KB Swings, Pull-ups, Dead Ball Slams and Sleds — you’re looking for the biggest bang for your buck exercises.

TOP TIP 2: MAXIMISE YOUR GAINS BEFORE YOU LEAVE

If you’re planning a getaway, amp up your training stress significantly for the last phase of your program leading into the holidays by increasing the overall training volume by at least 50% whilst maintaining the same intensity. You can do this by increasing the number of sets per exercise or by increasing the number of training sessions per week. The goal here is to create a state of accumulated fatigue so the holiday becomes more about the body recovering as opposed to regressing.

TOP TIP 3: EATING IS NOT CHEATING

We’ve all heard about “functional training”. So, this is where I introduce you to “functional eating”. No more mainstream “drink more water” or “carry some celery sticks around with you at all times” tips. If we think in a truly paleo sense of emulating our hunter-gatherer descendants, life was all about eating less during the day while we’re active and having a veritable feast at night while socialising and relaxing. This approach has lost its way in modern times because we’re told that if we eat too much at night it will make us fat. But it’s not eating big at night that makes you fat — it’s eating too many calories for the entire day. So, my advice is to eat light during the day and FOCUS ON THE FEAST. That way you not only get to truly enjoy your food and the company you’re with — which is what being on holiday is all about — but knowing that you have something to look forward to will keep your hand out of the cookie jar beforehand. Good luck! ■ 6 0

What do you look for in a suit? Nothing better than a beautifully tailored suit. I love greys and blues. No ties! What clothing would we mostly find you wearing day to day? Training gear almost always or, if not, then T-shirts and shorts. I probably change, on average, three times a day depending on what training session I’m doing.

e’ve got you geared up in some high-quality garb for this MAXIM fashion feature, Rob. Do you consider yourself a bit of a fashionista? Not really, but I do love a sharp suit. My wife Sofia has great taste though and she double checks me so I don’t leave the house looking like an idiot. How would you describe your fashion style? Training gear or classy, sharp suits. There isn’t much in between for me but most of the time I like to keep it casual.

How did you get into MMA and subsequently the UFC? My dad put me into karate lessons when I was eight and it went from there. I progressed into Jiu-Jitsu, Hapkido, wrestling and boxing and over time brought it all together and started going into MMA contests. Eventually I went on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and a contract with the UFC followed. When did you know you wanted to be an MMA athlete? I’ve always considered myself a martial artist and never really thought about being a professional until winning TUF. If you weren’t a UFC fighter what would you be doing? I really enjoy coaching MMA and my involvement in Gracie Aboriginal Pathways program so I would probably take that further.

You’re known as “The Reaper” and “Bobby Knuckles” — how did these nicknames come about? The fans (or commentators) gave me Bobby Knuckles and I chose The Reaper. There is no real story behind The Reaper other than I like it. Either nickname is fine with me. Take us through your daily training regime. On average I do three two-hour sessions a day and have very little down time. I treat my training like a job and am working nine to five, seven days a week. What type of mental strength is needed to be a UFC fighter? Mental strength is everything. Fight night is one thing but the fight is won long before that. What you put into training on a daily basis is what you get out of it and it takes persistence and mental fortitude to do that day in and day out. I aim to improve something every single day of my life. How do you prepare for a big fight in the Octagon? My training is key to feeling prepared. Every fight is 50/50 at the top level but if I know I’ve done everything possible in my preparation then I’ll be confident. Stacking the chips in my favour is all I can do. What goes through your mind before and during a fight? Just before the fight I get very nervous but once I hear my walk-out music and I enter the arena my mind focuses. I concentrate only on my game plan, listen to my coaching team and deal with whatever unfolds before me.

What’s it like to win a fight? The immediate feeling is relief more than anything and the hope is that I have done my team, family and country proud. I don’t want to let anyone down. Describe the feeling when you’ve either knocked out an opponent or won by submission? I’ll take a win any way I can get it. You are the current UFC middleweight champion — describe how you felt right after the fight to win this title had finished? I felt massive relief that I got the W. The belt and title is a nice cherry on the top but winning the title is just another milestone, it’s not everything. I have many goals I want to achieve and as long as I give my best every time then I’ll be happy. Winning or losing a belt is not that important. In winning this fight you became the first Australian/New Zealand-born fighter to hold a UFC title. What does this mean to you? I’m very proud of that and to have the Whittaker name etched in history. This was always one of my goals, so to have achieved it is a nice feeling. What’s it like to be a champion? Nothing has changed. I still train every day, play with my kids and do everything I always did before. Champion is just a title and means I have a target on my back. It makes me the one guy in the division that everyone wants to punch in the face.

“EVERY FIGHT IS 50/50 AT THE TOP LEVEL BUT… STACKING THE CHIPS IN MY FAVOUR IS ALL I CAN DO.” Your next fight is on February 10 where you will defend your title against Kevin Gastelum at UFC 234. Have you done anything different to prepare for this match up? Not really. I’m focusing on my skills, strength and conditioning and just aiming to be the best version of myself on fight night. Of course we watch videos and study him but if you focus too much on your opponent then you are not focusing on yourself. How do you think this particular fight will go down? Every fight is 50/50 at this level and this one is no different. Kelvin is a young, tough guy with many skills and not many weaknesses. This will be the toughest fight I’ve had yet and I’m really excited to get in there and test myself. You don’t do much trash talking outside of the octagon. Why is that? It’s just not who I am. I prefer to be respectful to everyone and to let my fists do the talking in the Octagon. What advice do you have for any MAXIM readers wanting to get into the UFC? Success is an attitude and if you have a dream then follow it. Get a great team around you and train harder than anyone else. Aim to be better every day in and out of the training. Then you’re more than halfway there. Finally, being a NZ-born Aussie (your mum is a Kiwi and your dad an Aussie), who do you barrack for when the Wallabies play the All Blacks? I’m an Aussie but also very proud of my NZ heritage. I love both teams and the only time I don’t barrack for the AB’s is when they are playing the Wallabies. Go the ANZACs! ■

Planning a holiday? Why settle for sun, sand and surf, when you can visit deserted, magical lands full of radioactive leaks, evil curses and scenic asylums? Choose your destination from 10 of the world’s best... B Y D I L V I N YA S A

T R AV E L

Prypiat, Ukraine Nothing says ‘holiday’ quite like donning a radiation suit and signing a lengthy waiver releasing the tour company of any liability should you contract cancer as a result of your visit. Then again, Prypiat — affectionately known as ‘The Dead Zone’ — is hardly your average holiday town. Established in the early ’70s, primarily to service the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Prypiat’s 49,360 residents were hastily evacuated one day after the 1986 nuclear disaster and it has remained abandoned — and highly radioactive — ever since. Yes, the rules of visiting are long (no touching of vegetation, no placing bags on ground, etc…), but not only will you get to see the land slowly reclaim the town’s amusement park, pool and schools, you’ll also be treated to both lunch (made from ‘clean food from the outside’) as well as a radiation screening on conclusion. Yay!

Tianducheng, China Let’s be clear; going to China to see the Eiffel Tower is like going to a brothel for a poetry gland slam — confusing and disorientating. But if you’re keen to avoid the eight million plus tourists who descend on the City of Lights like locusts each year, checking in at Tianducheng, essentially a replica of the famous city, might be your best bet. Located in the middle of farmland, work began on the luxury real estate development in 2007 with hopes that its 354-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower and Parisian-style cafes would draw hordes of both visitors and residents. It didn’t happen and the town now sits eerily empty since development was halted. Still, it’s worth a look.

Bodie, California Since it became a national park in 1960s, Bodie — a former gold mining ghost town located just east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range — has been labelled by the media as THE Gold Rush Town of the Wild, Wild, West. To everyone else who has actually visited, however, it’s known as, ‘the one place you don’t ever want to take home a souvenir from’. Said to be haunted since the mine was abandoned in 1913, visitors often speak of walking Bodie’s deserted streets and feeling like they’re being held down by ‘forces’ invisible to them. The park’s rangers also receive countless letters each year from visitors who want to return items they stole during the town tour, explaining that the items appear to be cursed. Best avoid the gift shop.

Hashima Island, Japan There are a lot of reasons to give Japan’s high profile ‘Ghost Island’ a miss; namely because it’s become popular with hipster bloggers and photo ‘essayists’. But persevere with the 15km boat ride out from Nagasaki and you will be gifted with the feeling of being dropped into a music video by The Smiths, all grainy, dilapidated buildings falling around you and misery. So. Much. Misery. It wasn’t always like this, of course. For nearly a quarter of a century, Hashima was a bustling coal mining facility that had some 5,000 workers, plus a supermarket, school and cinema. But when the coal ran out in 1974, so did the worker’s luck and they were soon deported back to the mainland, effectively leaving the island abandoned for 30 years. Although it was reopened to tourists in 2009, the state of deterioration is such that travellers speak of large sheets of concrete dropping down around them. BYO hardhat, anyone?

Plymouth, Montserrat Covered in a thick carpet of volcanic ash littered with charred cars and tree stumps, this capital city of this tiny island in the West Indies isn’t going to feature on any ‘cruise the Caribbean’ brochures any time soon. Destroyed after a series of killer volcanic eruptions between 1995 and 1997, the town — still inexplicably the capital of Montserrat — was soon evacuated with residents never to return. Currently, the only way to tour the area is via helicopter, however those with a passing interest in death and destruction shouldn’t lose hope; over the past year, taxi drivers and tour guides from the general area have been participating in trial runs for upcoming tours into what is known as ‘the exclusion zone’. Stayed tuned.

Kennecott, Alaska You have to admire a destination that can take on nearby tourism winners such as glacier hiking and ice-climbing and still come out on top as an attraction worth seeing — particularly when your biggest sell is ‘a mill tour’. But Kennecott somehow does it in spades. Formerly a copper mining camp, it was abandoned in the late 1930s when ore supplies were depleted and workers jumped ship, leaving all of their personal effects behind. Over the years much has happened at Kennecott — its complete destruction was ordered yet never completed after workers got bored and nearby residents looted what they could. But you can still see the remaining structures and items that were clearly stapled down on three daily tours.

Fordlandia, Brazil There is much we can blame American entrepreneur Henry Ford for (globalisation, global warming, Fords, etc…), but perhaps the perfect counterbalance to all this is Fordlandia, his vision to create a slice of Americana, deep in the heart of Brazil’s rainforest. Created in the late 1920s as a way to increase rubber production cheaply, Ford built an American village (complete with enforced line-dancing), and for a while things looked good. That is, until the Brazilian workers (rightly) revolted about enforced line dancing, plus the introduction of synthetic rubber meant Fordlandia was no longer needed. Fordlandia still sees a bit of action from squatters but if you really want to visit, you can look forward to a three flights, followed by a three-day boat ride from Belém. Enjoy!

Craco, Italy This Southern Italian medieval town has endured a lot of agony since the ’60s — 1963 saw a massive landslide, in 1972 it was hit with a disastrous flood and in 1980 it was crippled by an earthquake after which all remaining residents fled. And, if that’s not enough, in 2004 Mel Gibson fronted up with his camera crew to film The Passion of the Christ. If you’re keen to see the once-picturesque monastic centre and town, which is now overgrown and plundered within an inch of its life, you can either take a guided tour of its once-proud university, castle and numerous plazas, or you can save yourself some money and just watch it loom in the background of movies such as Quantum of Solace and Wonder Woman.

North Brother Island, New York

Kolmanskop, Namibia It’s hard to say what’s the most depressing feature of this Kolmanskop tour — seeing this once-glamorous Germanic town slowly disappear beneath dunes of sand, or the museum of old mining implements — considered the cornerstone of the tour. Admittedly, this former diamond mine — abandoned in 1954 after supplies were exhausted — does have an interesting past. Even though it’s located in the middle of the Namib Desert, it was built to look like a quaint German village so that the German staff would feel right at home. After you buy a permit at the town’s front gate to enter, you too can feel right at home — but only if by right at home you mean walking once-grand residences knee-deep in sand.

Whether you’re after a leper colony, forced rehabilitation for your burgeoning heroin addiction, or just a private bird sanctuary, this little island (located in the middle of New York City’s East River) has at one time been all of those things. Using its handy little location known colloquially as ‘the place where no-one can hear you scream’, it was originally built as a quarantine station but in the ’50s became a place where you locked up drug-addled family members against their will. Eventually the birds moved in, the people moved out and the buildings on the island slowly reverted back to nature. Today, there are two ways to check out North Brother Island — by watching one of those horribly depressing Life After People-style shows, or by putting in a request through NYC Parks and chartering a private boat to get there. God’s speed. ■

ew York had a pretty mild summer last year — the average temperature for the month of May was a refreshing 18°C — but on the day I’m scheduled to meet Brazilian supermodel Lais Ribeiro, it is positively sweltering. Apropos, considering how hot the 27-year-old is in the flesh. While this journalist’s face is sticky, and hair equal parts frizzy, Ribeiro walks into the Nomad location of the inviting Maman bakery like she just got off the set of a photo shoot. Snapple in hand, the lithe stunner with practically no makeup on isn’t really complaining about the heat — did I mention the restaurant’s airconditioning was on the fritz that day? “I give up,” she laughs, while twirling her slicked-back ponytail into a bun. Ribeiro gets a few noticeable glances at Manhattan hot spot Maman, and many more later as we walk by the Flatiron Building and Madison Square Park, but it’s something that she is used to after almost a decade in the spotlight. In fact, Ribeiro might even say she encourages fandom (she does have a cool two million Instagram followers and 100K Twitter followers). “These days it’s a bit tricky if you just do [social media] to show people that this, modelling, is your job,” she says. “It’s not what I do every day. I have a family; I have friends!”

MAXI M.COM.AU

It was actually her family and friends in her native Piauí who encouraged Ribeiro to model in the first place. “We don’t really have [career] options in Brazil because of the government and the politics, so I chose to be a nurse,” she explains. “All of my family [members] are teachers; it’s a very small place.” After enrolling in university, Ribeiro decided to take a chance in a local fashion week competition and was promptly plucked from the line-up to do another in São Paulo. “I had never worn high heels in my life before,” she laughs. A few months later she started the international fashion week circuit (think Versace, Dolce & Gabbana, and Ralph Lauren) and landed in New York permanently. “I saw the whole entire world when I first came here,” she says. “I saw snow, taxis, how to take

the train. It was incredible.” And don’t forget how incredibly intense that must have been for the young model, who at the time didn’t speak English. A lot has changed for Ribeiro since then, including her now very well-spoken English, though she demurs that her 10-year-old son, Alexandre, still speaks the language better than she does. Oh yes, the supermodel has been navigating the challenges of a blossoming career while raising a young boy. “My dream came true when I first got him here,” says Ribeiro, who spent her first five years working in New York without him (he lived in Brazil with her family at the time). “I would be crying, saying no to jobs, because I was missing him and I was just impatient. He’s a sensitive, beautiful kid.” Having her own dreams wrapped up in her son’s made Ribeiro work that much harder. She started modelling for Victoria’s Secret in 2010 and became an Angel in 2015. Ribeiro even wore the coveted “Fantasy Bra” for the 2017 VS Fashion Show, in Shanghai, China, a game-changer for any working model. “It’s family for us—we are friends outside of the job,” she says of VS girls like Sara Sampaio, Adriana Lima and Jasmine Tookes, with whom she vacations regularly. Still, there is more Ribeiro wants for herself and her career. She’s ready to make the transition to acting — she recently had an option on a hush-hush flick playing a superhero, but decided to bow out — and is hoping to push for greater diversity and inclusivity in fashion. Recently she was misquoted as saying she would never walk in Milan Fashion Week again due to institutional racism, but Ribeiro explains that is far from the truth. “I did Milan Fashion Week for four years, and I loved it. I would love to be there, to work more with them, because they should be more open to diversity. Everybody should,” she says. “It’s changing, but it’s still a small change.” A prime example? Ribeiro was recently on the cover of a major international fashion magazine, and was one of few women of colour to do so in its history. “How many beautiful models do we have and it never happens?” she says of the cover. It’s that fierce determination that keeps Ribeiro going on all fronts. “I have a very strong personality,” she says, and admits that she presents as a far quieter person at first glance. “For people who don’t know me, I don’t want to give it all away. At first, I’m just calm and trying to get to know you. And then I show up.” Thankfully for all of her adoring fans, she has done just that.

WHAT WOMEN REALLY WANT BY

In it, you’ll learn that being on #teamsingle ain’t so bad and hear about her four years of going undercover to research this timely title. In this edited extract, she reveals what women, finding love on social media, really want‌ So, what do you get out of chatting to loads of people and flirting away? You’ve got lots of interest and you’re having fun. You may even be starting to feel more confident. The main thing to remember is that at some point, you will actually start to tire of the flirting or dating merry-go-round. You may want to STOP and actually take the time to invest emotionally in one person. Dating is a numbers game and on social media, it really does have the best odds. AUR Z\_R ]R\]YR f\b ZRRa N[Q xTRa aU_\bTUy the more you are going to learn about life, relating to others and understanding more about yourself until you finally meet a date worth keeping or are at a time in your life where you would like to try and give something a real go. This is eventually and inevitably going to happen. Let’s look at the reasons why‌ You are investing too much time into flirt-chatting and you want to put your time and energy into something else. Perhaps you have a new job or want to study. You may have a hobby or sport you want to take up and you decided the hours used flirt-chatting could now be better spent elsewhere for a while. You may decide you’re not connecting with anyone online and want to try and meet people face-to-face because you know you can get better rapport with someone in the flesh. At this point you will either make plans to meet with someone you have been chatting to or just wait for fate to happen with in the outside world! Just remember to look up and around and not down at your device! At this point you may start to invest in one person. Some can play for months or years, but when you decide to invest in one person and create something more real than a chat from a distance, you will get off the social media carousel for a while. 9 0

MAXI M.COM.AU

All the while you’ve been flirt-chatting though, you have used social media as a great place to practice getting to know other people and learn a bit about yourself. This is only going to enhance any relationship you finally decide to start. It means you are now clearer with what you want and certainly know what you don’t want. When people sign up to Tinder, they’re using it as a platform to have some fun initially and rarely feel it’ll lead to love, but isn’t that just the way and exactly when love falls in your lap? So many friends I know met on Tinder and are still together years later. Solid huh? I love these stories, and you’ll read about them soon. It seems nobody wants to admit they want a relationship and would rather it happen by chance. With so much choice and temptation on the World Wide Web and social media, people are taking their time to shop around and not settle for anything less than they hoped for. Do that. Beware of the arrow that may be fired straight through your heart though. It’s always when you’re not looking. x9\\XV[T S\_ Zf AV[QR_RYYNy dN` N ]\]bYN_ tagline underneath many men’s profiles on the Tinder app. How each man interprets this was entirely different. It was largely based on what each man wanted from the app. Just because he writes this does not mean he wants a fairy-tale ending like the stories where they live happily ever after. It could be just a fun way of getting you to chat to him. How cute and clever is that though? Taglines like that show humour, and humour is closely linked to intelligence, so it’s a huge turn-on for a person. There are other ways of getting you to add them, friend them, follow or match with them. It’s not always because of wit. Some would write huge paragraphs underneath their profile about wanting something of substance N[Q x[\ SYV[T`y AURf d\bYQ P\[aV[bR a\ `Nf V[ the fifth or sixth sentence, “And if you’re still reading this, you must be very interested, so swipe right [match me] because we should

It needs to match with your personality. It’s better to just be yourself. I believe everyone loves to laugh, so these profiles may inspire you to remember where your funny bone is and have some fun with it all, too! Other profiles can be blatantly upfront though, and use no humour, wit, tact or timing. I’ve seen really assertive and direct profiles saying they’re only wanting some fun N[Q x[\aUV[T `R_V\b`y z9Ray` UNcR `\ZR Sb[ { aURfyQ `Nf @\ xAV[QR_RYYNy S\_ aUR`R ]R\]YR was not going to be always like a fairy-tale girl finding her glass slipper, and those who wrote the latter don’t want to be your Prince Charming. These people have usually just come out of a serious relationship and do not want another one. It’s not your fault. They just have some soul searching to do, or some alone time to be had. There are also some people that really just do not believe in monogamy. What Women Want

Women, as we now understand, are completely the opposite to men. It’s a wonder we ever get along, isn’t it? Haha! Women will love nothing more than to sit around for hours, have cake and coffee and tell you all about their day! That’s why when you see women get together to socialise, they will often go to a place to eat where they can sit quietly to chat, or go with a friend for a walk so they can chat! Wherever women go, they love a chat! When their counterpart socialises with his mates, he will most likely choose a sport or activity where the male DNA bonds without chatting. Here’s the good news. Women don’t necessarily want you to talk with them! They just want you to listen! They’ll happily chat away while you zone in and out and think about your work or football game, and then come back in, remarking now and then. They will be happy you’ve just heard them out. And women, you will be able to tell your man,

not your girlfriend, all your secrets because chances are they won’t be listening anyway! Haha! No, seriously men, if you don’t feel like talking, just open your ears and hand her the invisible mic. You need to expect that a woman will most likely text you a novel. You will most likely skim over it and sometimes you may take the time to read and respond. If the texts are becoming really long, you may see this as a sign that a woman wants to catch up and have an actual date, so she can chat and you can, yes, you guessed it — listen! Haha! The other major need of a woman is respect. Show a woman through your actions that you respect her opinions, career, interests, friends, body and mind. You don’t have to agree with all that we say or do, but try to honour a woman’s opinions as valuable contributions. This is a great way to a woman’s heart. Women also want your time. Ugh! I know, you don’t have much, so try to be

thoughtful when you are messaging her so she understands you’ve had a busy day, but you took the time to write to her. If you really want to nab someone you’re very interested in, showing her that she’s the last thing you think about before you go to sleep, or the first thing you think about when you wake up with a message of “Good morning!” or “Good night!” can be really attractive. For it’s the things we think about before we go to sleep that matter to us the most. You can be sure that if somebody is thinking about you before bed or first thing in the morning, they like you a lot! Get back to her within days. Guys, do not let a reply go for more than two days! You will want to get back to her that night or even the next day and let her know how it went. If the woman didn’t respond after you wrote “thank you”, it doesn’t mean she isn’t into you. It means she respects that you have a life and she has one too! If you leave your reply too long, she will most likely start to look elsewhere. Being active on social media is great, but not if you’re ignoring actual people and conversations. Don’t like someone’s photo on Instagram or Facebook if you haven’t returned their text message! Ultimately, though, what all parties want from social media dating is speed and ease. The fact you are not in a bar and are not standing right next to the person asking them out or hitting on them doesn’t mean you do not have to reply. The bonus of asking someone out via social media is that if you do not find them interesting or attractive, you can move on without too many explanations. There are going to be a whole lot more people to contact than your average bar, which means there may also be a whole heap more rejections. Do not fear! It’s just a numbers game, remember? Next! Remember? But the beauty of having the balls to flirt with someone means you get to be upfront and honest right away. When someone new approaches you, and the person messaging you is not your cup of tea and you know this right away, then do not make eye contact; in other words, do not feel the need to message back and reply. Just hit xQRYRaRy xOY\PXy \_ Q\ dUNaRcR_ aUR URPX f\b want! You are not obliged to have to thank them for approaching you or have to explain why you are not interested. And those feeling rejected now: do not read into this. Next!

Remember? The person you just hit on may have a partner already or just not like blondes, so don’t take it personally. Move on quickly! I got into way too many pickles trying to explain to men why I wasn’t interested in them! Haha! Poor us. It became a back and forth of them selling themselves and me explaining why I wasn’t into that either. Deeper holes being dug, and more mess being made. Get out quick! You don’t need to explain yourself, ever. Of course, going up to someone you like face-to-face would be a totally different story. You have eye contact N[Q `V[PR_R xaUN[X` Oba [\ aUN[X`y ZN[[R_` to display to the person who had the courage to ask you out. But hey, this isn’t that. This is social media and different rules apply. There’s no courage needed from behind a computer or tablet screen, is there?

● Don’t over-investigate. Once you have decided you do like someone and are flirt-chatting away, do not settle down into your comfy track pants with an alcoholic beverage and go on a full blown investigative spree where you are checking out way too many Facebook photos that go way too far back. We all have pasts and we need to judge people for where they are now, and not who they may have been. It also stops you from getting to know your new potential love interest. Instead of genuinely chatting away, you’re too busy acting suspicious and paranoid about what you just saw! Investigate enough to know you’re not with a bipolar mass murderer. Then, let it go and let it all flow. ■

ABOUT ANDI

Overall, what social media daters want from flirting are these little nutshells: ● Be authentic and genuine. Be true to yourself and make sure your posts match who you really are as a person. ● Keep it general. Don’t get into heavy debates about things you feel passionately about, like politics or human rights movements. Stay neutral. ● Be consistent with your activity. This relates to your style of posts. Try not to be one part of your personality one day, and then the exact opposite the next. It can confuse someone who may be observing you and make them feel like they don’t really know you. This type of feeling can lead to trust issues, which may turn them off before you even begin. ● Find common interests. This could be as simple as mutual friends. Also, areas you live, work or hang out are good ones, but never reveal an address. A suburb may be fine. ● Be light and fun. We are in it for a good time. Make sure you’re having fun. If you’re not, change it or move on. You just don’t get each other’s humour and that’s okay!

As he tours Australia and New Zealand this month, the iconic German pop star, and hit maker of the annoyingly addictive 1999 tune “Mambo No.5”, discusses his last day on Earth… How do you want to leave this world, Lou? I hope that we belong to the one generation that will not experience death but will be taken up to meet the Lord in the air. Are you going to Heaven or Hell and why? Many celebrities, like the extremely gifted Freddie Mercury, stated that they would prefer to spend the afterlife in Hell because of the seemingly more exciting guest list. I gotta disappoint many here – there will be many good folks in Hell and a lot of super sinners in Heaven. Life is not a “do good” contest at all but a probation time in which we all strive to find the right exit door into eternity. OK. So, what do you say to God when you eventually get there? I’d assume I’d be speechless and not say anything at all for the first time in my life. What’s your last meal? I’ve been raised by my Sicilian Mamma. Cannoli and Panini con Panelle would definitely make me leave in peace.

No.5” that says I really beg you my Lord to me flirting is just like a sport – the constant flirting led to my personal deadly sin that almost got the best of me. What would you like to be reincarnated as? I’m happy that incarnation does not exist. An endless circle of misery would be the worst punishment imaginable. What’s your greatest achievement during your time on Earth? This interview could turn out to be just that.

What are your final words? “All the money, fame and success means nothing if you don’t know the Lord Jesus because He is the way, the truth and the life. Send in the trumpets!” Finally, what can fans expect from you at the SO POP tour this month? Folks will be taken back to a golden era in which we were all fresh and pretty and the selfie wasn’t even invented yet. On top of all this, fans will ask themselves how this Mambo guy still manages to look like it’s 1999. ■

Name one thing you’re glad you’ll never have to do again. I’m glad I do not have to wear those silly ’90s outfits ever again. What are your friends saying over your casket? “Lou Bega has not only left the building but he has left it thru the right door.” What’s written on your tombstone? “Ladies & Gentlemen, this is an empty grave”.

Fresh from his recent The Night Talker tour of Australia, one of our country’s funniest comedians tells us how his final day on Earth is going to go down... In America, you’ve had death threats for your anti-gun routine. You OK? It has made my life a little scarier. I feel more in danger because people are shooting up theatres and my show wouldn’t be a bad place to do that. Now everyone who comes into my shows in the US is checked with a metal detector. It’s both exciting and scary. But yeah, I had a death threat in Texas, so we booked police to be at the theatre. I’m sitting in my dressing room and the cops are there being briefed when one goes, “Sarge, what are we here for?” Sarge replies, “Well, this particular comedian has been getting a lot of death threats, so we’re here to protect the audience and the comedian.” Cop one then asks, “Why is he getting death threats?” Sarge: “Well, he does a routine on gun control.” To which the other cop says, “Maybe he can learn to shut his f—king mouth.” That’s the guy I’m paying to protect me. So, how do you want to leave this world? Ironically, probably a gun wound to the head. Quick and simple. I know what you’re asking; being blown by a porn star on a private jet that then crashes into a mountain. No, I don’t even want to know it’s coming. Do you have any deathbed confessions? I’ll take them to grave, f—k ya! What’s your last meal? Some seafood sauce and two kilos of Australian prawns — not American prawns, they are f—king shit. Oh, and some plain white Sunblest bread to make sandwiches. I could do that all day. 9 8

Are you going to Heaven or Hell? Do 50 percent of people go to Heaven and 50 percent go to Hell or do just the good people go to Heaven? Because if only the good people go to Heaven then I’m not making it, but I think I’m better than half the world. What do you say to God when you get there? “I’m sorry about all the jokes, mate, I was wrong.” Which legendary people do you want to hang out with in the afterlife? I’d like to go drinking with John Lennon. I think he’d be a good guy to hang out and talk shit with. I like people who have good intentions and believe in love, but are still flawed and are still bastards, because people aren’t one thing or the other. To whom on Earth do you owe an apology and why? Most of the people I’ve f—ked over, or been mean to, in my life I’ve apologised to.

Name one thing you’re glad you’ll never have to do again. Open Mic spots. I used to hate doing them. You hang around the bar saying, “Please let me on, I’ll be ever so good!” Then you get on and half the audience wants you to fail. What are your mates saying over your coffin? “Should we go to the bar?”

“MOST OF THE PEOPLE I’VE F—KED OVER, OR BEEN MEAN TO, IN MY LIFE I’VE APOLOGISED TO.”

What’s written on your headstone? “This was completely unnecessary — he was cremated.” Got any last words? I’d say to my girlfriend, “It was fun, here’s the password to my bank account.” I recently made a will and I realised most of those people would have an easier life if I was dead. ■

What’s your greatest achievement during your time on Earth? There’s the simple answer, which is my son. Anyone can achieve that — you just leave it in. But it still might be my greatest achievement. What’s the dumbest thing you ever did? That’d be up there with my greatest achievement — leaving it in.
