Dear Participants & Bike fans, It is our pleasure to welcome you to another edition of our annual 12 Hours of Aruba Sports event!

Our aim is to organize a fun and competitive mountain bike event for all levels in combination with raising funds for a charitable cause. Alto Vista provides a unique venue for our event and we are proud to support the Alto Vista Chapel.

Putting an event like this together takes a small army and financial support so before we all get dusty and tired we would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors, FX team riders and staff for their tremendous input and energy.

H 12 IS H TO O R U Y R S In 2014 the FX Sports Biketeam was founded. Frank Plomp had the idea of organizing something different in Aruba in combination with the promotion of the, just founded, new biketeam. The first brainchild was a 24 hours race, in that time really popular in the cyclingworld, but way too heavy for Aruba. Instead of that he started to organize the first 12 Hours of Alto Vista together with Edwin, Wim and Mario, which took place in May 2015. The event has kept that name for 2 years, then it changed in 12 Hours of Aruba, because of the participants growth.

Last year the course changed a bit, they extended it. First reason because the overtake possibilities were enlarged in this way and the second reason because the last part of the trail had become too crappy.

Times of 12 hours of tally ar also over. Since last year there are no more volunteers counting the cycled rounds. It's all automatized with MYLAPS now.

The charity is the Alto Vista Chapel, where the race also takes place, goal is to maintain the Chapel. Everything that the 12 Hours of Aruba can miss financially, goes to the Chapel (AFL. 1750,- last year).

A CH LT A OV PE I L STA The small, bright yellow chapel is reached by a winding road lined with white crosses marking the Stations of the Cross The place is special, because in 1750 built the Spanish missionary Domingo Antonio Silvestre, the first Catholic church of Aruba. But of course a whole history preceded it. The original inhabitants, the Caiquetios converted after the arrival of the Spaniards in 1499 and later other European settlers, in the course of time to Christianity. The European settlers deported the Indians to other islands where they had to work as slaves. In this way, other tribes come to Aruba. All Indian tribes had one thing in common; a heel strong faith.

Silvestre decided to build a chapel there. It consisted of clay and stones and was destroyed in the course of time. The current chapel was built in 1952.

Peace Labyrinth The labyrinth is built based on the Chartres Labyrinth. Its distinguishing features are; 11 circuits, the turns arranged in four quadrants, 85 lunation's around the perimeter, and a 6-petal rosette in the center.

Modern "pilgrims" walk the labyrinthine path as one of many tools to enhance prayer, contemplation, meditation, and / or personal growth. The labyrinth walk is popular with a growing number of people because of its simplicity. There is no right way to walk a labyrinth. You only have to enter and follow the path.

PRICES "Last year I participated with another girl. Then we ended up 1st, but I have to say there was also no competition haha. It's not that I'm really good, but I can ride for a long time. We participated last year with 2 men and 2 women, who did ride apart from each other and both won something.”

RENTAL BIKE "Because we have to come from Curaçao there is of course a price tag for us to joint he 12 Hours. I do not have such a very good bike, so it is cheaper to rent a super good bike in Aruba."

CYCLE ALONE "I got off my bike last year and then I thought, I must be able to do it alone, I was not extremely tired, of course physically, but I could do more. so that's why I'm going to do it alone this year, absolutely gonna make it!"

CHARITY "This year I do it all on my own, partly to prove something to myself but mainly for a charity. Talking about CUSAR (Caribbean Urban Search And Rescue), where i’m part of. The problem is that we get nothing from the government, so we have to buy and pay for everything ourselves. We are also the only one in the Caribbean, who are doing this besides the fire brigade."

HELPING PEOPLE “I’ve been working with the Marines before i started with what I’m currently doing, Red Cross Aruba and CUSAR. Helping people is what I want to do” SUPPORTERS "Nobody, we did not have that last year either. But it's just so great, everyone is enthusiastic during the 12 Hours. But i’m part of the Red Cross Aruba so I know a couple of people there."

TRAINING "I have been away for a long time, so I was not really able to train. But normally I cycle a lot, also with my cycling club Team Willemstad.

We are just new but already have a lot of members, so we organize a lot of things with that! Now for the 12 Hours i try to train, the last days have cycled at least 40km per day" HAPPY HOUR “Yes, absolutely. Drinking yes. Smoking yes. Everybody knows me like that. But in the end I know I can cycle such a race.”

TIP "Enjoy! Enjoy what you’re doing. It's a very long time, but you really have to enjoy the people who are encouraging you. That one 'yeah' helps you really get through it. And do not forget an extra battery for your light!"

HUGGING CACTUSES "At some point you get so tired. Then there comes a stone, and then another. And before I knew it I was laying in the middle of the cactuses.

But that’s part of the deal, you fall and stand up. Sometimes you just make wrong choices due the tiredness " THE HARDEST MOMENT "That is really in the end, you are so tired. You can not revise yourself anymore. Physically is quite okay, but the fatigue in your head is the worst. The connection between those two is simply no longer there early in the morning.

FLAT TYRES "I think that's not that bad, keep it really low so I say 5! It's all tubeless nowadays and the trail is clean too."

The purpose of CUSAR is to, on the basis of activities of education and training in Search and Rescue in Urban areas to support the local rescue authorities in cases that the magnitude of the event exceeds their responsiveness.

Mission Prepare vulnerable communities in prevention and basic care in emergency situations.

Provide support in work and urban search rescue areas in national and / or international in situations of major events. When local emergency authorities request.

Objectives 1. Create community groups that are prepared for Disaster Prevention and Attention.

2. The CUSAR as can accommodate group has the support of an affected area.

3. Give guidance and support to the management and disaster administration, give attention to local primary and secondary agencies, with emphasis on urban rescue, damage assessment and casualties.

4. It supports local authorities in putting together a center that guarantees the operational coordination of different local and foreign teams to work and interact together when an event of great magnitude occurs.

Areas of action of CUSAR - Before: preparing and training Rescue Groups.

Training and giving information to the community.

- During: Searching areas where people work, the location and rescue of victims in national and or international Urban Rescue areas Assisting international rescue teams.

- After: Humanitarian Aid and Rehabilitation of the community. (Shelters, etc.)

Projects CUSAR 1. The certification of the members of the CUSAR in Urban Search and Rescue at “low" level in the first quarter of 2015.

2. Provide equipment for the Rescue team CUSAR, Basic Rescue teams.

3. The construction of an international training center CUSAR. 4. Start prevention workshops to the community in the 2nd quarter of 2015

TRAINING "No, no no, we are all very sporty boys and we all have a mountain bike.

With De Ronde van Aruba we run, we participate at all kinds of sportevents. I am originally a swimmer, such events are just great fun to join. We do not have good bikes and we're not good cyclists, but we are all super fanatical."

VITESSE "I participated in all the years, except last year. When Vitesse was in the Cup Final, so I went back to the Netherlands. It was the first time that Vitesse won a prize, which I could not miss. So with a heavy heart i had to give my place in the team to someone else."

GROUP CHAT "We're all in a groupchat from WhatsApp. We always want to meet, but it's just a complete failure everytime. Eventually we had an appointment to go cycling, but in the end everyone came home drunk."

APP PICTURE "The beer bike acts as a group image, which is a bit like how our group works. But if we are on the bike, then we will go fully to the max. Then we want to push our limits."

VILLAGE FURNISHING "That's what stays with me every year, can I say village anyway? More a church square, which looks great every year. But you know when you cycle away from there that there's nothing left, but if you ride along the pick-ups you will always be encouraged. " SUPPORTERS "There are not many for us because there is no beer served. The first year there were people, but without beer they were quickly gone."

RECOMMEND "Anyone who can cycle a bit can join the 12 Hours.

Are you a cyclist? Than I would definitely recommend it. It does require some preparation, you are responsible for your own light. In the 1st year, we may have underestimated the importance of having a good light.."

IMPROVEMENT "The event lasts all night, and it is really a cycling event. They do have a music and so, but how much fun it would be if there were more other audiences attracted with, for example, a live band and beer also attracts people. It is, of course, a sportevent, so it should definitely be forbidden for the athletes to drink."

TIP "Go cycling the 12 Hours trail when it's light before you actually sign in, but certainly also by night! Do you know the trail the worst of your team? Then start cycling, it's still light at 06:00PM." CYCLESUIT "I've never cycled with cycling gear, only with a pair of pants and cycling shoes. But my brother is coming here and he is taking a suit for me! So I'll be totally blingbling soon"" MUSCLE PAIN "Horrific, bumpain especially. You must lie in your bed the way you made it.. Maybe we have to train more."

FLAT TYRES "Nowadays with the new developments you can continue riding with a flat tire, so everyone will come home anyway.

But I put my money on 6 tyres."

TRANSPONDER / WARRANTY Each team receives one transponder / chip for the registration of lap counting. Each team must take delivery when sign in for presence on the day of execution. And is responsible for registering each round, and a proper transfer to a new driver. The transponder / chip must be returned immediately after the finish.

SUBSTITUTION ZONE The substitution of the participants during the competition must occur at the site indicating the organization (called the sustitution or exchange zone), this will be announced during the briefing. Substitution outside this area are strictly prohibited, there follows immediate disqualification. The frequency of substitutions is determined by the participants / teams themselves. The exchange street should be clearly defined. Only the alternating drivers may enter the exchange zone. Other participants stay outside. This to prevent accidents and obstacles. It is forbidden to leave your bike in the exchange zone. The bicycle can be taken to the racepit or taken away in the intended racks in the center area.

BREAKDOWN DURING THE ROUND The participant in difficulty comes beside the trail and returns to the starting point without obstruct the other participants on the circuit. The rider or one of the teammembers must notify the race committee. The exchange of a new rider must be made in the substitution zone. By a breakdown it is possible to go back by following the right site of the track. This lap will not be counted. If you want to continue the route, you must stay at the right side of the track. This lap will be counted. In both ways you must avoid obstructions and dangerous situations INSURANCE Participants are strongly recommended to bring your own adequate insurance cover for material and personal (accident) damages.

At registration this insurance does not provided!

PROCEDURE IN ACCIDENT At the entrance of the single trail there will be a traffic light.

When red light: Stop the race immediately and everyone goes back to the start / finish line.

Orange light when there is a problem and it should reduce speed and be extra alert.

Green light: no risk free passage.

The first aid staff is located in one of the tents on the side of the substitution zones!

If you are a victim or witness of a crash where help is needed, you must: • Notify the co-participants which can inform emergency or organization • Volunteers organization warn that can alert the emergency service • Warning Stations along the route, they will take appropriate action.

FIRST AID First Aid is present during the whole event and will present in a designated tent. On the track various posts will be where communication and are in control with race director and first aid. An ambulance will be on call via the emergency number.

FAIR PLAY The entire event is dedicated to fun and sportsmanship for everyone. Therefore, the organization expects from everyone a fair behavior. At any behavior that is regarded as dangerous and unfair by the organization, after a warning following a penalty. Mutual respect between participants, organizers and spectators is important for the smooth running of the event.
