Backpack Safety
Submitted by Stephanie Clark, athletic trainer at Elk Valley Physical Therapy and Herbert Hoover High School. She graduated in 2014 with a Master's in Athletic Training from West Virginia Wesleyan College. In 2017, Stephanie was awarded West Virginia Athletic Trainer of the Year from the West Virginia Athletic Trainers' Association.
Millions of children experience the excitement of choosing their school back pack each year. What most parents don’t consider is how much strain this must-needed accessory places on developing bodies. It has been estimated that more than 14,000 adolescents are treated yearly for pain caused by their backpacks. A poorly fitted or over-packed backpack can place increased stress on a student's developing musculoskeletal system and result in poor posture and strains. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons notes that carrying more than 10-15% of body weight in your backpack can result in neck, back, and shoulder pain, muscle and joint issues, and changes in posture. The good news is that, by following some easy guidelines, you can prevent all of these injuries and get the most out of your school year! 1) Two is better than one! Use both shoulder straps to help evenly distribute weight. Keep them snug so the pack stays close to your body. 2) Keep the weight low. Limit weight to 10% of the child's body weight. If your child weighs 100 pounds, their backpack should not weigh more than 10 pounds. 3) Placement is key. Place objects in the backpack so the heaviest one is closest to the body and the lightest one is the furthest away. Use compartments in the backpack to distribute weight evenly as well. 4) Wide is good. When it comes to shoulder straps, wide padded straps will distribute weight best. Using the chest/waist strap will also help distribute the load. 5) One size DOESN’T fit all. The pack should be centered and fit snugly against the back. It should not extend more than 2 inches below the waist…this will cause your child to lean forward to distribute the weight and cause increased strain on the lower back and hips.
The backpack should not be wider than the torso and should be made of lightweight material.
A few red flags for backpack trouble include: pain (neck, back, or shoulder), difficulty maneuvering while wearing the backpack, or imbalanced backpack wear. Back to school is an exciting time. Don’t let your backpack slow you down!
