Roots and Grounds is an innovative and sustainable approach to a farm-totable restaurant. To create the most functional layout and design intentions, several case studies were used to expand on the information needed, including research on successful existing farm-to-table restaurants, existing demonstration kitchens, circulation paths throughout restaurant plans, and healthy food inequalities in inner cities. From this research, I implemented multiple different tactics to create a successful strategy for Roots and Grounds, including using a seasonal menu that focuses on local ingredients and changes based on the availability of produce throughout each season and a semiprivate floor plan that gives each space the flexibility to be more intimate or more public and open depending on what is needed.

The site is located in a densely urban area of Mission Bay in San Francisco, California. Mostly surrounding this restaurant are various commercial and retail spaces, with residential living spaces located on the floors above these areas. Because of this variety of space types, I wanted Roots and Grounds to appeal to many age ranges, cultures, and customs. Some of the ways I have accomplished this are through the design intent. For example, I used an earthtoned color palette throughout the restaurant and paired this with modern and unique seating and a welcoming and open front entrance. I want people entering the space to feel a sense of healing through the biophilic patterns woven within the design.

FORM INCLUDING CURVILINEAR LINES, CONTINUOUS FLOWING SPACES, AND CLEAN, ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS THAT CREATE AN AMBIENT YET AIRY ENVRIONMENT THAT PROMOTES CASUAL CONVERSATION, COMFORTING SEATING AREAS, AND CONNECTION TO THE INDIGENOUS NATURE SURROUNDING THE BUILDING. FUNCTION A SEMI-OPEN LAYOUT THAT INVITES COMMUNITY AND COMFORT WHILE ALSO ALLOWING FOR INTIMATE AND INTENTIONAL CONVERSATION FLOW. RECEPTION & ENTRY The entry experience sets the tone for the entire dining journey, blending functional design with the warm spirit of hospitality. This is a space that invites exploration, curiosity, and connection, preparing guests to enjoy not only a meal but a deeper connection with the land and the people who cultivate it.

As guests step through the doors of a farm-to-table restaurant, they are invited into a space that celebrates the simplicity and beauty of nature. The reception and entry area reflects the ethos of the farm-to-table experience— warm, welcoming, and grounded in sustainability.

Several design principles were integrated within the restaurant, such as various patterns that mimic nature, contrast between colors, spaces, and texture, and repetition through the different furniture types included within each space. I also implemented movement by understanding how a person’s eye would travel through each space. Roots and Grounds aims to be a leader in adjusting how we think about a restaurant. Not only is this a social place with the primary goal of serving people food, but it should also be a comforting place where community is welcomed and the idea of quality service that centers on the care of both people and the Earth is expressed.

After all, roots are an integral part of any plant in nature. They allow a plant to gather nutrients to sustain itself and continue growing, for as the roots grow deeper into the Earth, so does the plant reach closer to the sun. This is the concept that Roots and Grounds is centered on: a way for multiple facets to come together in one beautiful masterpiece to create a long-lasting design.

Human-centered approaches were also at the forefront of my mind for this restaurant, especially considering ergonomic design tactics. For example, I wanted the main dining sections to be uniform but recognizable in type so that a person dining for the first time could easily navigate their way through the restaurant and back to their designated table. Clear and concise signage, straightforward egress paths, and significant materials to specify the various restaurant sections were other ways that I continued to place people first within the plan.

Sustainability and environmental awareness are two key points that I wanted to keep in mind throughout the entire design process and hopefully instill ideals that can be carried throughout the restaurant’s lifecycle. For example, selecting materials from companies that consider sustainable or circular approaches was a major consideration, as was decreasing energy consumption by specifying LEDs and low-energy appliances.

DINING

Datsuzoku is a connection and addition to Zoiros Frontida’s mission to expand their assisted living properties internationally.

This project is focused in Isogo Ward, Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan, in a city section that offers easy access to public transportation, beautiful nature and urban scenery, and adjacencies to several retail and commercial areas.

The name for the proposed assisted living facility is derived from the word’s meaning, which is “to step out of the ordinary.”

This Japanese term encourages a life well lived with amenities and opportunities that elevate traditional living styles. For example, several of the main floors contain spaces that celebrate and recognize common practices within the Japanese culture, including a tea room, prayer/meditation room, and interior atriums that invite the local plant life into the spaces.

Datsuzoku’s apartment suites offer a modern and updated take on senior living. For example, each apartment includes ADA compliancy rooms and fixtures, slow-close cabinetry, natural stone countertops, and large windows for natural light and beautiful views.

FLOOR PLAN ONE 2 Datsuzoku’s main level includes several public spaces such as the library/living/lounge space and the dining area, complete with a noodle bar where fresh Japanese dishes can be served to guests and residents. The floor plan reflects an “out of the ordinary” approach with biophilic elements implemented throughout the space. Some of the key designs include an atrium that occupies the space under the stairs, subtle curved walls and furniture, organic and modern furniture, teakwood ceiling features, and wrap-around shelving in the library.

FLOOR PLAN TWO

The second floor of Datsuzoku is complete with offices, a multipurpose room, and regional spaces such as the tea room and prayer/meditation room. To continue implementing spaces native to the culture, the tea room is set up as a traditional low-seated space with pinewood tea tables and tatami mats to dress the floor. The prayer/meditation room is a smaller, intimate space where residents and guests can sit or kneel. The art room and multipurpose spaces are the two largest areas occupying this floor, and the rooms are adaptable to transition to almost any activity. There is also an atrium on this floor, complete with native plants.

This project aims to create an assisted-living facility internationally where Zoiros Frontida can expand its site locations, help more individuals, and emphasize the quality and feeling of home. The future facility embraces the Japanese culture of Kanagawa while striving for an elevated design with a consistent sense of home for every resident. Intentional and essential design will be the primary pillars of this project. The goal is to achieve modern and biophilic spaces that connect the interior and exterior environments with functional spaces that bring every person a sense of connection and healing.

The concept for this project is to create a space that not only embraces Japanese culture, but also elevates the traditional way of life. Datsuzoku is the name of the new assisted living and the concept model of which my designs have followed.

Datsuzoku means to step out of the ordinary or out of routine.

For this assisted living, that means stepping away from typical spaces, furniture, layouts, etc., and stepping into unique spaces, functional environments, and a creative way of shaping an assisted living facility. For example, interior gardens/atriums are included on several floors within the building to provide a sense of healing and connection to nature. Another way my designs have accomplished the concept is through an Earthtoned palette that mirrors many of the colors seen all throughout Japan. The entrance and reception is a statement space that I designed to be simple, yet enhancing. The textured wood baffle ceiling elements paired with the washi cream wall coverings offer sensory exposure that allows the eye to explore the space.

RECEPTION

TEA ROOM The design for this tea room not only honors Japanese cultural traditions but also prioritizes the physical and emotional well-being of senior citizens, creating a space where they can engage in meaningful moments of reflection and connection with both nature and others. It emphasizes a serene, nature-inspired space that promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and connection with the natural environment.

The design incorporates elements of traditional Japanese aesthetics, such as tatami mats, shoji screens, and minimalist furniture, while integrating biophilic principles like natural light, plants, and natural materials to enhance well-being. The room features large windows with views of outdoor gardens, allowing for an abundance of natural light and the calming presence of greenery. Indoor plants, such as bonsai trees and potted herbs are strategically placed to foster a sense of tranquility and connection to nature. Soft, warm wood finishes and stone accents create a soothing atmosphere, while carefully chosen textiles, such as organic cotton and silk cushions, provide comfort.

Accessibility is a key focus, with low seating arrangements and traditional tatami mats that are designed to be comfortable for older adults. Adjustable lighting, non-slip floors, and easy-to-reach tea utensils ensure safety and convenience. The tea room layout is open and uncluttered, encouraging mindfulness and the calming rituals of tea preparation, which can be a therapeutic activity for senior citizens.

The apartment levels include three different living options: a corner one-bedroom suite, a centered one-bedroom suite, and a studio apartment. These levels will also include interior garden sections to continue integrating nature within the building. The apartments show example furniture selections for reference and are complete with upgraded modern tea kitchens. Some of the key features within each suite are soft-close cabinetry, ADA-compliant spaces, motion-activated plumbing fixtures, engineered hardwood floors, LED light fixtures, and non-porous natural stone countertops.

APARTMENT LEVELS

VALLEJO RESIDENCE PROJECT TYPE: HOUSE & APARTMENT | RESIDENTIAL LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO, CA SOFTWARE USED: REVIT, ENSCAPE, ADOBE SUITE

The Vallejo Residence is a dual-property opportunity where the client has specified the lower level to be rentable for someone with potential disabilities. My inspiration in designing this space was to create an environment that felt like a classical luxury connection to the main residence with an open layout and extra bedroom that can function interchangebly between an office, guest suite, bedroom, etc.

The color scheme is neutral with bold accents of blue and green gem tones. Elegant slab stones, touch-latch cabinetry, and wall moldings were a few of the design elements that I have included in this space. Extra storage areas and undermount lighitng are also added features to elevate the lower level residence.

My inspiration and vision for the Main Residence are closely related to the previous level, classical design with a fairly neutral color palette that introduces deep gem-tone colors throughout various accents in the residence and a hint of Brazilian mid-century modern. I am also hoping to create an overall more open plan that is inviting while also being functional. The client has young children so one thing that I will be emphasizing is ease and accessibility for main public spaces as well as privacy for the bedrooms.

Another aspect I will be emphasizing is growth with the plan throughout time. For example, considering that the client has young children and also works from home, I was to designate the bedrooms as opportunities to be changed or have soft alterations in the future. Creating public areas that embrace connection and have an emphasis on variety, comfort, classical details, and openness is the goal that I aim to achieve.

For the primary suite of the Vallejo Residence, I wanted to create an experience that includes softer and more subtle main pieces with the bold and statement moments found through the plumbing fixtures, lighting, and slab selections. The Kohler Artifacts collection was a major part of this suite compostion for its classical feel and vibrant brushed bronze finish option. The primary bathroom has a standing tub with a bathtub niche that looks towards the bathroom sink and vanity. The primary suite also includes a private water closet and large shared walk-in-closet.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HEADQUARTERS PROJECT TYPE: OFFICE | COMMERCIAL LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO, CA SOFTWARE USED: REVIT, ENSCAPE, ADOBE SUITE

The Presidio of San Francisco, CA, initially established as a Spanish military post, is now a historic landmark district and national park. This beautiful area includes 15,000 acres of forests, creeks, and beaches, collections of artifacts related to military history, and the oldest national cemetery. Before the birth of its time as a military post, this land was native territory for the Yelamu, a local tribe of the Ramaytush Ohlone people. These people are still indigenous to the area today.

The Presidio merged with Golden Gate National Park in 1994 and, four years later, began fully operating. Three organizations support this area through Partnership for the Presidio, a name that includes support from two federal agencies and a non-profit conservancy. This partnership has opened the doors to several revitalizing tactics for the Presidio, including “restoring hundreds of historic buildings first used by the Army to be now used as homes, workplaces, and visitor destinations; renewing the Presidio’s forest and wild open spaces; and improved trails, beaches, and other amenities to make the area welcoming to all.”

Currently, the Presidio is an active small town, home to approximately 3,000 people and 200 organizations. The trust invests all of its earnings back into the Presidio to help continue sustaining the area while remaining welcoming to all people.

INTRICATE PATTERNS

REPETITION AND CURVES CONCEPT: FLIGHT CONCEPT STATEMENT: Reimagining an experience consumed with exhilaration, focus, structure, and comfort. A temporary escape with a lasting memory.

BACKGROUND: Developing the concept statement for this project was based on the history of the client- National Geographic. This company has been established for several years and continues to grow and expand while striving to help the planet with science-backed knowledge and expertise.

The concept - flight - can be directly related to this by expressing the exhilaration and excitement of discovering the Earth paired with structure and precision that stems from their esteemed network of people. A flight, or air travel, can mean different things to everyone. For this project, flight is about reminiscing on memories of journeys to various places, both exciting and mundane. It also includes comfort and focus; a time to tune out of the typical noise and tune in to an experience.

THE RECEPTION AND LOBBY IS THE FIRST SPACE THAT PEOPLE WILL ENCOUNTER, WHICH IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO DESIGN A LAYOUT THAT EMBODIES THE CONCEPT AND GOAL FOR THIS PROJECT TO CREATE A STRUCTURED ENVIRONMENT THAT INCLUDES EXCITING ELEMENTS THAT SPARK CURIOSITY TO CONTINUE EXPLORING THE BUILDING WITH VIGOR THE GRAND RECEPTION DESK WAS INSPIRED BY THE IDEA OF A GEODE; A ROCK THAT, WHEN OPENED, CONTAINS MAGNIFICENT CRYSTALS THAT ARE PLEASING TO THE EYE.

The design of this modern museum café is an extension of National Geographic’s identity—blending art, culture, and functionality. The space will feel like a seamless transition between the exhibits and a space to unwind, making it an experience in itself. By integrating artistic elements, thoughtful furniture arrangements, sustainable features, and technology, this café becomes a place that not only serves food and drinks but also enriches the museum experience.

The color palette features muted greys and whites, and earthy hues with accents of deep green to evoke calm and creativity. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and glass are included to help create a sense of organic warmth, contrasting with sleek metallic finishes and high-gloss surfaces for a contemporary touch. Natural lighting is emphasized through large windows that connect the café with the outdoor environment, statement pendant lamps, and recessed lighting to blend the overall café design.

The office worksapce features an earthy modern design that combines sleek, contemporary aesthetics with natural elements to create a harmonious, productive environment. This design blends clean lines and minimalism with organic textures, incorporating materials like reclaimed wood, stone, and sustainable fabrics.

The color palette is inspired by nature—muted tones of moss green, warm terracotta, soft beige, and cool grays—that evoke a calming and grounded atmosphere.

In this workspace, the layout is open and fluid, encouraging collaboration while maintaining a sense of personal space. The furniture is functional yet stylish, with ergonomic chairs and desks made from natural materials, such as bamboo and solid wood. Greenery is a key element, with large indoor plants like fiddle-leaf figs and snake plants strategically placed to purify the air and add a touch of nature.
