DEAR READER My mind has been focused on education this month, with three grandchildren doing public exams. Happily now the stress of exams is over – it is just the waiting for results! I have also had the privilege of spending four days in a boarding school where the children are not allowed any electronic devices at all: no mobile phone, no iPods or iPads, no computers, except in the classroom, and no television except on Saturday nights. The result: a lot of very happy children, playing games outside, interacting with

each other, chatting to friends and staff, reading on the grass and in

bed, helping look after animals and tending their own vegetable plots.
Contributors Carol Evans, Peter Constable, Shane Leach, Antony Sherman, Ray Pile and Peter Jones
In other words, having a very happy childhood in the real world rather than a virtual one. It really made me think. I wonder how our children and grandchildren would react if we suggested separating them from the ‘essential’ equipment? I may suggest it ……!

Imagine Design Create BRING YOUR IDEAS TO LIFE AND ENTER THE WORLD OF ENDLESS CREATION Xnilo V3 is an innovative personal fabrication device, able to use multiple techniques and materials for home and office digital fabrication. Naming just a few, it’s able to 3D print in all types of plastics available on the market, rubber, ceramics and even chocolate! It can also work as a 3D milling machine. The speed, accuracy and cost efficiency of these devices are being experienced in schools and colleges where they form part of the national curriculum teaching. In industry, they are being used to make replacement parts, provide prototypes and in the medical profession the research into building replacement organs!

One of the great reasons to play in a band, with an excellent reputation for supporting the development of young musicians, is that part of the process includes providing the opportunity to perform in some of the best venues in the region, such as St Botolph’s Church or Castle Park in Colchester, St Peter’s Church in Coggeshall and the wonderful West Cliff Theatre in Clacton.
