Bedding down with a top 10 finish, Mattress Online offers an alternative solution to mattress shopping
Over 19 years, from humble beginnings storing mattresses in a garage, Mattress Online has grown to become the largest stockist of mattresses in the UK and has played a major role in shaping how we shop for the product today. Launched to provide an alternative solution to mattress shopping – the idea came to fruition when Steve Adams, with a background in e-commerce and creating websites, by chance met his previous business partner, Steve Kelly, who had years of experience in the bed and mattress industry. In the past financial year, turnover has reached almost £30m. Mattress Online is now the largest independent mattress retailer in the UK, employing 73 people and has built an excellent reputation for customer service, quality and innovation.

Mattress Online has therefore seen a great level of success over the past 12 months and their incredible achievements have been recognised on a national level. This has included coming 68th in the

FEBE Growth 100, achieving Online Bed Retailer of the Year (making it four years in a row) by the National Bed Federation and receiving a Scale-Up Award for E-Commerce. Their business model has moved from an online-only model to a new hybrid one as they introduce their ‘clicks and mortar’ expansion plan, setting them apart from their competitors. Mattress Online recently opened physical stores in Sheffield, Rotherham and Skipton, combining their excellent online prices with traditional showroom customer service. Their customers have therefore rated Mattress Online as ‘Excellent’ on Trustpilot, with 95% of customers saying they would buy from the company again.
Mattress Online have been steadily scaling up their product offer and working hard to provide smarter logistics processes. In 2019 only 6% of their deliveries were completed by their own fleet and drivers. In 2022 they averaged 25% which in cost savings and customer feedback, has given them the data to confidently invest in extra fleet vehicles for the future.
Internally, the business has developed a strong culture and a superb employee retention rate. It invests in a staff wellbeing programme, which now includes a collaboration with The Sleep Geek, James Wilson, as well as two charity partnerships, which the whole team is fully engaged with.
Mattress Online are a corporate partner of Zarach and help Cherrytree Support and The Sleep charity through fundraising, donations, warehousing, deliveries, and inventory services.
Passionate about sustainability, the company has a mattress collection and recycling service that forms part of its ever-growing commitment to help protect the environment. This ethos is embedded throughout the culture of the business too.
It works in partnership with mattress recycling organisations, who process each mattress component at a dedicated recycling plant, saving more than 140,000 mattresses going to landfill.
Mattress Online has been a digital-first business from day one and its growth has been underpinned by the in-house development team who continually innovate and find smarter ways to use technology to make the customer experience slicker and to help their employees work in a more streamlined and efficient way. In 2021 the company processed 128,500 orders from 3.1m web visitors and in 2022 processed 86,223 orders from 2.2m web visitors.
