After my first day of research, I recognized that many of the existing studies and statistics about homelessness are insufficient. So I called every night shelter and every organization for the homeless in Graz. I interviewed helpers and residents of the institutions. Further, I went to the park and talked to homeless people who live there. The secondary research showed that more than 37,000 people are homeless in Austria. In Graz, 800-900 people live in institutions, 70 people sleep on the streets, 80 people live in hostels and 270 people live in the so-called “hidden homelessness“. Women are often affected by hidden homelessness. They have no home and live in a forced relationship which is often characterized by violence.

Problems / Essentials
Through the interviews I realized some major problems, but I can‘t solve all of them at once. So I selected some of them which I thought are getting too little attention in existing projects.
Core Idea / Space For Encounter The core idea is to generate a community, increase acceptance and social awareness through a mobile outdoor kitchen in association with urban gardening stations, which will be used by homeless people and other people of our society. It should provide space for encounter and initiate the communication and friendship across social borders.

+ mobile outdoor kitchen

community, acceptance
It´s important to station the gardens and the kitchen in very busy places. They should be within easy reach and awake interest and attention. The urban gardening stations would be stationary and the kitchen could move from location to location every four weeks. The relocation will be opened with an event which includes live music or artistic staging. The mobility of the kitchen is important in order to stay attractive and to prevent vandalism and occupation by different groups.

change of society
Initial reservations could be overcome through social media and the app. Further, a shopping list is integrated in the app so that during your regular shopping trip you can buy one or two ingredients which are required in the kitchen. Hence, it isn‘t only the urban garden which provides food for the homeless. There are some important additional benefits of using this project, such as fun, community, a good deed without commitment, increased acceptance, being active and food. The main aspect is not the food but the community: Everyone can use the kitchen and the garden. It should be a place where you can have a great time together, while at the same time having an impact on the future.

Interviews
At the beginning of our research, we recognized that we had to speak with the users to learn about their needs and their problems. We spoke to more than 16 photographers and laypersons. We also did a workshop with some of them and interviews lasted between 40 minutes and 4 hours. The results were typed and summarised.

After the secondary research and the interviews, we summarized the key points on our Leica-Wall. We found out that photography is all about creating experiences and emotions. During the next steps, everyone worked on his or her own concept. I decided to create an analogue camera to generate the experience we talked about.

What would the analogue photography of the future look like? The answer is Leica UM. It is an analogue medium format camera, produced in a fair way. The camera not only freezes experiences but also generates them. The development process of the pictures will be revolutionized and can thus create a new experience. Also the handling of the camera meets the claim of creating experiences. The motto of Leica, to “focus on the essential“, is reflected by the product and the experience design.

During this project my team partner and I made a lot of research, sketches by hand and Photoshop, different versions of the product and mock–ups. Through the mockups we tested the handling and ergonomics. Between the different steps we always had presentations and meetings with the team of Briefcase Biotec. We gained different experiences through this project, for example communication with engineers and experts of other fields.

How It Works After starting the synthesiser the chip has to be inserted and the data has to be entered on the display. The reagents from the cartridge will be mixed on the chip which produces a DNA strand. The chip has to be exchanged after every operation. Therefore the upper lever needs to be moved back and the drawer has to be pulled out. The cartridge has to be changed after a few working steps. For that reason the lower lever needs to be moved up. Now the cartridge can easily be changed. The completed DNA strand is located in a little vessel out of plastic behind the DNA output door.

Cardboard - Chair / One Piece
05 2015
cardboard - chair • task: building a cardboard chair without glue or other materials • individual work • FH JOANNEUM • duration: 2 - 3 weeks
The assignment was to create a chair made of cardboard, without using any materials such as glue or similar. We were given a specific amount of corrugated cardboard stripes in a certain size. Another criterion of the task was to optimally use the features of the cardboard material. My aim was to construct the whole chair out of one piece of cardboard. Therefore, I came up with a special cut and folding pattern, the origin of which was a circle. Further, the seating surface consists of solely one part, which gained its form through cuts, folding and plugging.
62
The chair is eminently suitable for enjoying a cosy read in the living room or playing console games in front of the TV.

Packaging For Flaschenpost

packaging • task: construct a packaging with a second life • individual work • FH JOANNEUM • duration: 2 - 3 weeks
Flaschenpost is a project by my former school colleague and diploma project partner Elisabeth Tschavgova and her team colleagues. Flaschenpost sells drinking bottles online in cooperation with SOS Kinderdorf (a charitable institution to help parent-less children). Part of the profit is donated to the SOS Kinderdorf.

brief project
This project is about going easy on the world’s resources and helping the children in SOS Kinderdorf. The product Flaschenpost carries a big factor of charity, a factor the packaging has to reflect. Therefore, the packaging offers a special but simple folding system, which allows an easy transformation from the packaging to a coin bank. In this coin bank, the client collects pocket change and sends the full coin bank to SOS Kinderdorf. Only an address label has to be rearranged. Thus, one did already do good twice by buying the bottle. The coin bank will be unfolded at SOS Kinderdorf, painted by the children as thanks and then returned to the client. As a result, a majority of the packaging will not be disposed.
65
My project was to create a packaging for these drinking bottles. The name of the project is: “One good deed every day!”

My team-partner and I did a lot of research at the beginning. It contains the history of furniture and rooms for kids, existing kindergartens and furniture concepts, ergonomically requirements, theory of colours, physical and mental development. We also had interviews with kindergarten teachers, nannies and parents. Besides that we got constantly feedback from our cooperation partner Thomas Maitz and our tutors.

Mock-ups And Testing
73
We drew the conclusion, that our draft was perfectly fitted for supporting the children’s conception of space, as the arrangement of the furniture represents a kind of 3D-puzzle. Additionally, the pedagogical employees can playfully teach colours with the aid of the multicoloured half-spheres.
suumi
During the course of our diploma project, my partner and I did extensive research and visited kindergartens and nannies in order to talk to them and to test our models together with the children.
Design and Arrangements
The main issue in this concept was to build a room for a free mindset of the children and to support their fantasy. To reach this aim we chose a simple geometric form, which is built from two trapezia as top and front view and a parallelogram as side view.

Design and Arrangements
The object seems to be simple but behind this simplicity you can find some incredible refinement. The objects show their strengths in a modular system, you can arrange the modules how ever you want, so there are many possibilities.
77

For example seating arrangements in half circles, a full circle or in a straight line. Beside this you can use the furniture as shelf, room divider etc. In conclusion: with SUUMI, a whole kindergarten can be furnished.
